Haunted: A Love Story

Rate this book
When a rom-com, Scooby-Doo, and Ghost Adventures collide…

Branson Hobbs, aka Sonny, chases ghosts for a living. But what his fans don't know is that he also talks to them. When Sonny created his paranormal investigation show, Haunted, it was the perfect cover for his abilities. Still, he and the friends who made the show a reality didn't expect fame. Sonny is sick of it all after five seasons, but stepping away isn't easy. Determined to ensure the fifth season is the best yet, the producers straddle the Haunted crew with a social media star, whatever the hell that is.

When she meets the hulking ghost hunter Sonny—a name so incongruous with his demeanour that it's almost laughable—Isadora Hernandez wonders if she's made a terrible mistake. As if chasing the paranormal wasn't scary enough, Sonny Hobbs makes her sweat for more reasons than she cares to admit. But as the crew travels into the British Columbia interior, Isa finds herself swept up in the adventure and captivated by Sonny's unexpected kind-hearted charm.

Nature gets fierce, and after digging up more mysteries than they bargained for, the Haunted crew must ask themselves if they're pursuing the supernatural or if something else is going on at the Hideaway Hotel. They'll do everything they can to figure it out, but the most challenging part for Sonny will be not falling for the Influencer...

I absolutely devoured this novella.

Sonny is a ghost hunter with a special ability. Along with his friends JJ and Eli they have a popular ghost hunting TV show; HAUNTED. Isadora is an influencer and fan of the show, who is signed on to join them for Season 5.

"𝙃𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙛𝙛. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢."

The story has paranormal activity in a haunted mountain side hotel, a MMC with a secret supernatural ability, and a tenacious FMC. Some tropes to expect: grumpy/sunshine, found family, forced proximity, touch her and 💀, isolated location.

"𝙎𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚. 𝙄𝙛 𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙙, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙄𝙨𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙧𝙖 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙯."

The sexual tension between Isa and Sonny is immediate. I loved how he is seemingly cold but opens up to Isa, and when she sees his hidden personality behind the persona she becomes as protective of him as he is of her. 🥰

"𝙃𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧. 𝙃𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙗𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣."

This was a great combination of mystery (paranormal/ghosts) and romance! The characters and story had me hooked right away. I really hope there will be a continuation of Sonny and Isa’s story and their ghost hunting adventures!

Out of all the romance tropes out there a grumpy sunshine dynamic is one of my favorites!

Haunted: A Love Story, gave me just that but with a bit of a twist. When a paranormal research team meets up at The Hideaway Hotel in the Canadian mountains to see what goes bump in the night we're introduced to our main characters:
Sonny Hobbs sees dead people...talks to them too. (He's a handsome bear of a man with a grumpy exterior and, well interior...) He has a past, because don't we all, but it's his past that's made him good at his job and keeping love at a distance.

Isadora Hernandez influences alive people for a living...with her gorgeous smile, but she isn't afraid of what goes bump in the night. (She's all sunshine and quick wit and isn't afraid of spiders!) But she has a past too, one where she had to say goodbye to someone she loved that left a lingering impression on her.

But when the two of them are slapped together to navigate the ins and outs of the latest episode of Haunted the attraction begins to grow between Isa and Sonny.

This book will not break your heart or scare the jeepers out of you, but it will restore your faith in finding love in the darkest of places. If you're looking for a cozy "scary" story with a spicy middle (3 spicy ghosts rating), then Haunted is one you can easily curl up and read in the safety of your non-haunted home and smile because there's a Happily Ever After(life).

This is a perfect coupling of ghost hunting mixed with a love story.

Sonny, Eli and JJ are starting off season 5 of Haunted with their new female coworker Isa and a brand new location that brings them to a haunted hotel in central British Columbia. The hotel has had its fair share of ghost sightings, and strange things keep happening that has the owners and staff curious for some answers.

This book was not scary at all, but mysterious enough to really grab your curiosity and pull you in.
Within the first few chapters this book had me giggling and completely hooked.

If you’re someone who enjoys a good love story, where you can’t help but fall in love with the characters, this book is for you.

If you enjoy a good love story, but like it with a little extra (in this case paranormal/ghost hunting) in your life, then this book is right up your alley.
It’s a quick read that I couldn’t put down.

All in all, I highly recommend this book.
This book is a great mix of paranormal, mystery, and romance.

A perfect mix of spooky with spicy and funny! L.E. has done it again, making you feel every emotion while reading one of her books. I have never been able to escape reality like I do when reading her novels and Haunted was no different. Twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, love scenes that were unexpected, yet appreciated ;)

When you pick up this book, you immediately fall in love with grumpy Sonny and the way sweet but funny Isa perfectly compliments Sonny’s personality. He turns into the biggest marshmallow for her and she accepts him as he is. I would not be upset if there was a sequel to Haunted because I just want more of Sonny and Isa!!

As someone who had to be forced to watch these types of shows by their wife I was surprised at how captivated I was by this story. I found the book to be clever, funny and heartwarming with sprinkling of spooky and unnerving. Sonny and Isa's romance was honest and fiery enough to make me want to wake my sleeping wife after a late night reading. I would and will loudly recommend this book to everyone i know.

Update Nov 23, 2024: I just listened to the audiobook version of this and I'm still just as obsessed. The single narrator does a great job with all the voices, especially considering this is a female narrator but most of the characters are male. The line delivery is excellent, making me laugh out loud and giving me chills up my spine and raising the hair on my arms. Still 5 stars. Still want a movie/TV show adaptation. The first time I read this book, I binged it in a single day. I would have binged the audio in a single day as well, but work and sleep got in the way. SO GOOD!!

-----

Listen Linda, when I saw this book had a 5 star average rating I was suspicious as hell. Like, come on. Too often I see ARCs or indie authors with books that have a 5 star average because people are too nice or don't want to hurt feelings.

I'm not afraid to be honest. I'm not here to be nice.

And yet I've been all up in poor Ms. Wagensveld's DM's thanking her for providing this ARC because holy shit it's magnificent. I started and finished it all in one day, yes I sure did.

This is not a perfect book, there's some insta-lust and there's a couple convenient plot moments, but that can be forgiven because goddammit it's the most fun book I've read in a long time. It's also fairly short, clocking in at a little under 200 pages, so there wasn't exactly the luxury of time to have the characters lust build up. It did, however, take some time for them to do anything about their desires. Accounting for the length of the book, what was done in less than 200 pages was nothing short of incredible and while I toyed with the idea of giving 4 stars, I just couldn't. I liked this way too much and have already recommended it to several people.

Basically from the jump, I cared about the characters, and that kind of surprised me. We open with the MMC's POV and I don't usually care for, or relate well, to male POVs. Author Wagensveld managed to write a male who was all male without making me roll my eyes at any over-the-top machismo. He behaved believably, and spoke in the way I'd imagine a grumpy ghost hunting grouch would speak. The FMC's POV was also well done and had a different voice/tone from the MMC's. Sometimes mutli-POV books give characters the same tone or voice, but not here. FMC Isabella, or Isa, is soft and sweet, but capable and firm. Despite being an influencer and model, she's more than a pretty face, and in fact, gets her hands dirty a few times. Good for you, girl! I love to see it.

And woo-boy, was I invested in this story. I blew off my MIL's request for help prepping for Easter to finish this book. (OK, not really, but I did kinda rush through the prep... she understands.) Haunted: A Love Story is faced-paced and witty, full of snappy dialog that reads like a masculine version of Gilmore Girls. It's not a gripping thriller or mystery, but it is investigative (we are hunting ghosts, after all) and I was so eager to see when Isabella and Sonny were finally going to give into their base instincts and tear into each other. Again, it's hard to believe this all managed to be done in less than 200 pages!

There were several times while reading about the supernatural goings-ons that I got chills. Probably a good five times or so! I live in a house that's been in the family for about 60-70 years, and it's haunted as all get-out, so maybe I'm a little sensitive to spooky books. Everyone living in the house has stories, and there's a new activity that happens at least once a month: silverware rattles in the kitchen at 2am, doorknobs jiggle, things go missing and reappear in other rooms later, cold spots, lights flicker but stop if you ask it to knock it off, and sometimes you'll hear footsteps when you're home alone. One scene in the book actually managed to jump scare me, but please don't let that deter you! I am, in fact, a giant baby, and scare very easily. The average reader, even if they don't like scary things, will almost certainly be fine!

I would be so happy, nay, fucking elated, if more books in this universe were released. And there is potential! Only one episode of the ghost hunting TV show was shot in this book, which happened over the course of a week, so future books could feature shooting subsequent episodes and how main characters Sonny and Isa develop their relationship over time. Alternatively, the ghost hunting crew has three members: Sonny, featured in the book, but also Eli and JJ/Jameson. The other two ghost hunters could absolutely have their own books and I would be just as invested as I was with Sonny's story.

The way I put it to my husband was this, copy/pasted directly from our chat, with the grammar/punctuation tided up for the sake of this review:
When I saw it had a perfect 5 star average I was suspicious. I am no longer suspicious. I want 5 more books, a TV series adaptation, a feature length movie adaptation, fan art, and spin-off's. In fact, if the author wanted to give each person in the ghost hunting crew their own book, I'd read the shit out of 'em.

Readers will eat this up if they enjoy Phasmophobia, Ghost Hunters, Zak Bagans, Scooby-Doo, and a sprinkling of romance.

I can’t remember if I’ve read a ‘paranormal’ haunted romance before but I am glad this was a first for me as this has set the bar high!
I enjoyed getting to know Sonny and Isa as well as JJ, Eli and Poly! I love Poly!

Haunted is a little scooby doo, a little supernatural, and a whole lot of fun to read!
The grumpy/sunshine romance sucks you straight in and keeps you there. Sonny is a cinnamon roll with a crusty exterior and Isa is sweet and open hearted enough to cruise straight through to his soft insides.
I loved the combo of paranormal and scooby
doo adventure.
Haunted was exactly what I needed to pull myself out of a book slump. Thanks L.E!
Here’s to hoping we get JJ and Eli’s stories next!

* I received this arc in exchange for an honest review, many thanks for the opportunity *

Really cute story! Just the right amount of spicy and spooky. I love when characters have an instant connection but also work up to their relationship, and has the happy ending. This one has all those aspects! The way L.E. writes the interactions between characters is descriptive but not frivolous which I appreciate. Was a quick and easy read.

Haunted: A Love Story 👻
by L.E. Wagensveld

Branson “Sonny” Hobbs hunts ghosts for a living — and not just on camera. Behind the hit paranormal show Haunted is a man who can actually talk to spirits, though fame was never part of the plan. After five seasons, Sonny is ready to walk away, but his producers have other ideas: pair him with a bubbly influencer to boost the show’s popularity.

Enter Isadora Hernandez, who expected spooky adventures — not a broody ghost hunter who makes her blush every time he looks at her. Together with the Haunted crew, they head into the British Columbia interior, only to discover that the real mystery might not be supernatural at all.

Once again, I was completely captivated by L.E. Wagensveld’s writing. It wasn’t terrifying — which I loved, because I’m an easily-scared girlie — but it struck the perfect balance of cozy and spooky. I adored the grumpy x sunshine dynamic between Sonny and Isa; their banter had me smiling the entire time. Even with all the humor and lightness, the story still carried real heart and emotional depth. I’m not usually a fan of paranormal stories, but this one kept me hooked from start to finish — a fun, atmospheric read that felt like the perfect October comfort.

📖 “Isa chewed at her lip. A few days ago, when she’d met Sonny, she’d never thought he’d be the one comforting her in a moment of stress... but wasn’t that also what she’d done for him outside? Imagine her hugging Sonny Hobbs — just a couple of days prior, and she’d have said it would never happen.”

💫 Cozy, funny, and just the right kind of spooky.

This is a standalone novella that I wanted to read based strictly based on the cover. I went in blind and I am so glad I did. If you are looking for a spooky love story with a bit of comedic relief, this is your book.

This is about Isabella who has signed on for season five of the ghost hunting series, Haunted. Isabella is an influencer who meets Sonny, the lead and show starter. Sonny and his friends JJ and Eli are main focus of the show. They are all sent to the Canadian Rockies to investigate a haunted hotel. What they find are ghosts, a murder mystery and a romance that just might not survive.

I am a huge fan of Ghost shows and this book was a dream for me. Having grown up in a haunted house..(don't care if you believe me or not), this book brought me back to all those times that people didn't think I was telling the truth. My mom sister and myself all have had experiences and this book was perfect for my ghost believing heart! My only complaint was that it wasn't longer so I could savor the story. The relationship between Sonny and Isa was sweet and little Poly was a fun addition. I felt that there were a few things that weren't answered but I am hoping that we will get more.

Short, sweet, and slightly spooky.

I actually surprisingly really loved this book. It was quirky and unique with just enough suspense that kept me wondering what was going to happen next. I enjoyed the touch of the inevitable “fake ghosts” and the real “ghost whisperer” qualities.

Can we please get a hunky, grumpy Ghost Whisperer on TV? It was something I didn’t know I needed until this book.

The writing was done well, though it did seem to end kind of abruptly and left me wanting more. More of this book, more of the main couple (especially more of a HEA), and more of the friends whom I definitely became invested in.

4.75 ⭐️

It would totally be 5 if it hadn’t ended as quickly as it did. Though, fleshing it out would solve that problem. But it doesn’t necessarily need it to be just as enjoyable of a read. It would just help the ending be more satisfying.

Usually I don't do ghost story books, weird considering I love the paranormal and ghosts and such, but this one caught my eye and I'm glad it did. I finished it in a day, honestly wished it didn't end. Like it would be nice reading about them going to new places for the show. It made you feel at times like you were watching a paranormal show instead of reading a book. Th depth of the characters were great. And Poly, just that added touch to round everything out. Though it would have been nice to see Steven get his butt kicked at least a little bit. And I would have loved it if they could have helped the spirit of the woman looking for her baby. Though loved the way they found the skull, how they found it could shave easily had someone due a clue reference or something to kind of lighten that moment a bit. But honestly definitely a great read!

Well this was a surprisingly fun, sexy, haunted novella that I highly recommend! It's a quick read so cosy up somewhere warm or bask in the sunshine whilst reading this story. I'd previously heard this story being a cross between a romance novel and Scooby Doo and I wasn't sure what to make of it - this wasn't corny at all. The characters were very real and likeable (L.E. Wagensveld always creates relatable characters), the haunted part wasn't too scary (that was a relief as I was reading it at night) and the romance was just right!

L.E. Wagensveld was my gateway author to contemporary romance novels and this is another great read! Even if ghosts/spirits aren't your thing - don't discard this novella - give it a go. I did, and enjoyed the read!

Sonny, a ghost hunter, has his own paranormal investigation show. It is airing its last season & to help insure that it is the best season, they bring on Isadora, a social media influencer. For the last season, they are at the Hideaway Hotel. Things just keep getting freakier. Will they get answers to what is really going on here? Is there foul play at work?

Sonny & Isa are the textbook definition of grumpy x sunshine. This novel really did read like a spicy Scooby Doo episode! It was such a good time. The epilogue had me wondering if we will see more of Sonny & Isa in the future! I would absolutely read more of them if given the opportunity.

I really enjoyed this book, the chemistry between the two main characters was very sweet with a pinch of spice and the way they interacted with the others was very comical. The setting of the story was brilliant in a creepy mystery way and the length of the book seemed like it fit. However, I felt the last chapter or so of the story was rushed as there was still a mystery left unexplained. Saying that I still believe this was an excellent read and so very much worth taking a chance on. xD

I liked the plot of the tv ghost chaser who could actually hear ghosts. And the attraction between Isa, the influencer, and Sonny/Branson (I didn't understand or really care for him having a nickname and a name. The story wasn't long enough for that to matter.) played out pretty well. But the reason for them being at the haunted hotel kinda sputtered out at the end. I guess I was expecting it to be a lot creepier.

This was a lovely, quick read! Cute mix of romance, mystery and spooks. It was the perfect level of spicy, and captivating from the start! Overall a cute and captivating romance. The characters are lovable and interesting. The paranormal activity did have my heart pounding with anticipation at several points during the read. However, I did find a few spelling errors and some of the descriptive word choices weren’t my cup of tea. I would recommend to most readers looking for a spooky/cozy romance.

This was short and sweet and hit all the important beats flawlessly. Sonny and Isa were adorable together and I loved the added suspense of the haunted house as the backdrop to their love story. Mystery, humor - ghosts - a creepy old hotel, and a sweet and steamy romance. Throw in an adorable dog and a broody yet sweet MMC with a secret and, well, this book has it all!
