A tale that is told from a 2 person point of view. Vince is the firefighter and Sarah is a college student who knocked a candle over in her dorm room causing a fire. Vince responds to the fire but spends his time getting Sarah out of the elevator she had become trapped in when it ceased working during the fire. Much of the story feels like the details are much too minute with several passages being repeated with just slight word changes. It makes it feel like you aren’t making any progress in the storyline especially when it seems to take a chapter and a half to make a stir-fry dinner. The title also implies that Vince is grumpy and he feels more like a man who isn’t sure the direction he wants his life to take until he needs to rely more heavily upon Sarah. There are inconsistencies throughout that make reading frustrating and annoying. Time lines seem blurry with days, weeks, months and years all a bit fuzzy. Even his military connections are not well defined, is he in or out, is he a reservist? The episode surrounding the injury was confusing. Overall, it was hard to keep reading when it felt like a struggle to get to the next part of the story.
This was a two and a half star age gap romance, with a single dad and an almost college graduate. Sarah’s campus apartment catches fire, and in a panic she inexplicably disregards her roommate and runs out into the elevator, which stops working as a result of the fire protection system. Vince rescues her from the elevator, and in short order his boss mentions Vince’s vacant basement room as a place for Sarah to stay while her living situation is sorted out. Of course the two are attracted to each other, and Vince’s young daughter becomes fast friends with Sarah. This was a tough read as the writing style is a bit stiff and formal-ish while being repetitive. Part of every scene is repeated as the POV changes from between the MCs, and it’s truly just filler and unnecessary. The intimate scenes real and dreamt are painful to read, with decidedly unsexy descriptions and dialogue. I received an advance reader copy from the author and booksprout and I’m sharing my honest opinion.
A quick read, the storyline is entertaining has almost college graduate Sarah trapped in a lift during a fire event at her dorm, when fireman Vince, rescues her from the lift. Sarah who loses all her belongings in the fire and lives in a different state, gets invited to stay in Vince’s basement spare room, he has a 7 year old daughter and their relationship builds and bonds over spending time together with little Mary. The writing was a little stilted and unnatural, it didn’t flow naturally so made it a bit distracting.
