With all my heart I thank Carlisle for piecing a story of life, love & adventure; transcending time & memory, into a little book whose pages wave in the hands of the reader like leaves in the breeze.

This is a book that children will find enjoyable & encourage them to be pensive on numerous occasions. Being as a person can find comfort & pleasure in a single story, no matter how many times they’ve heard it, I am certain that this very book will provide that to a great number of children. I suppose that is an aspect of what makes storytelling so special & such a stunning pillar in our species. We are gifted the ability to share as well, we are granted the sentiments to enjoy those moments of sharing & I think that coming upon a story that showcases that so beautifully is a treasure, no matter who the book is for.

By utilizing trees as staple pieces of time, growth, relationships & life, Carlisle has encouraged the reader to transcend the limits of imagination. Trees have been on this planet for such a long time, far longer than we can imagine, & the author encourages us to think as far back as we can to a time when other people were enjoying the very same tree we’ve come to know. I find myself walking around the city in which I live & imagining what it was like before I was born & then further back still before we had automation to change the world around us. Yet, there stand all the trees that have grown big & strong through it all & I am left feeling very humble that, even for just a moment in time, I too have been able to share this space alongside them.

I hope that this book finds its way into the hands of many a growing soul so as to remind them of the wonders we behold on this earth during our short time here.

Thank you to Edelweiss+, Templar Books & Emma Carlisle for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Yazar kitabın sonunda doğa her yerde diyor.

It feels kinda silly to track a 40-pages long children's book that is practically one poem to my reading list... I bought it mostly because of the beautiful illustrations but oh my god it was so heartwarming... really just a lovely short reading session 🌳

As an avid tree lover, I approve this message! Such a fun and heartwarming book about appreciating something so many people might take for granted. Take a moment to peer up into the branches of a tree and admire all that they provide!

WHAT DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU LOOK AT A TREE? is a thoughtful book that invites children to think about the trees all around them. The story is written in the form of a poem as a series of questions. Instead of just thinking about trees as branches and leaves, the story invites children to consider the ways in which they are living beings who grow and are each unique.

What I loved: This was a lovely book that invites children to think about the world around them. Trees are unique and interesting in all sorts of ways, and the book invites them to think about the different types, features, and the ways that they are living too. Trees live for so long, and the book points out the experiences they may have had and will have all around us. Posed as a series of questions, it is a thoughtful story for young readers that invites them to consider the parts of nature they may have not before.

The font is large and clear, making it easy to read throughout. Each page contains a stanza of the poem, making the pages turn fairly quickly. Designed for toddlers and preschoolers, this is a softly drawn book with plenty of details to help them consider the majesty of trees all around.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, the poem can be a bit awkward in places. While it generally has an every other line rhyme, the choices feel a bit stilted in places with words that don't quite rhyme, which can cause some small stumbles when reading aloud.

Final verdict: A poem to celebrate trees, WHAT DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU LOOK AT A TREE? is a lovely picture book that encourages little ones to enjoy nature all around.

A little girl looks at a tree in her garden, she begins to wonder about her tree, wonder what it feels and thinks, wonders what this tree has seen throughout their life. When it was small, did other children stroke the bark and play in the branches?

Emma Carlisle’s illustrations are soft and luminous, the trees are depicted with vibrant greens, their branches seem to move on the page. We get to see the creatures that live in the branches and we get to see underground, where creatures live in dens and burrows. The rhyming text is poetic and fun to read, it gives us lots to think about. What is important in life and what has true value. The story also shows us just how amazing and important trees are to us.

Throughout the story we see the changing seasons, changing weather and changing times. The tree remains a constant, and the little girl grows up. This is a beautiful book to encourage children to appreciate our trees and see them as a part of our lives. The end pages have some lovely ideas for thinking and discussing and getting to know more about trees!

What Do You See When You Look At a Tree? written and illustrated by Emma Carlisle is a delightful narrative, nonfiction picture book. Readers are asked to consider such things as, who might’ve lived in the trees, who might’ve played under them, and how long the tree has been living. Nature and the world around us are what readers are encouraged to connect with. I believe these are important considerations to ponder especially in our busy world. Carlisle’s writing is lyrical and poetic but is perfectly relatable for young readers. Illustrations are done in pencil drawings and watercolor. They stunningly depict nature and forest scenes. They are gentle and have a soothing quality to them. Back matter includes, “How to Be Like a Tree” and a note from the author. I am a city girl but love trees, so it’s a favorite book in my collection. It’s a beautiful book that belongs on a coffee table. What Do you See When You Look At a Tree? is a lovely read aloud when learning about trees, for a nature themed story time, or for a gift for the nature enthusiast.

This starts out like a book about trees-the science of them, the shape, size and life…but it is much more. It turns into a book about life questions that will initiate any explorer’s, scientist’s or child’s journey into understanding their own connection to the natural world. Dance is everywhere-it is in the way the trees sway in the breeze, the way the shadows branches dip, dive and dance with the sun, the way laves flit and flow and drop to the ground and feed the tree, the way squirrels dance rings around the trunk and and it is in the way children glide and slide through its branches. The greatest understanding is that trees have families too-they connect for generations and generations underground sharing nutrients, support and even oy and love. This is a wonderful inquisitive book, told through finely drawn forest scenes that encourages children to explore their connection with nature.

"What Do You See When You Look at a Tree?" is a delightful and thought-provoking picture book that invites readers, both young and old, to embark on a journey of exploration and appreciation of the natural world around them. This book, through its simple yet profound narrative, encourages a deeper contemplation of nature, particularly trees, fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity in its audience.

The book's charm lies in its ability to blend poetic language with captivating illustrations, creating a sensory experience that is both engaging and soothing. The text, often lyrical, prompts readers to observe trees beyond their physical appearance, urging them to consider the myriad of roles trees play in our lives and in the environment. From providing shade and shelter to being silent witnesses to the passing of time, the book highlights the multifaceted nature of trees in a manner that is accessible to children yet profound enough to resonate with adults.

The illustrations in the book are particularly noteworthy. They are vibrant and rich in detail, complementing the text beautifully. Each page is a visual feast, with colors and patterns that capture the eye and imagination. This handsome picture book asks young readers to consider the importance of trees. Rhyming text asks questions that show there’s more to trees than meets the eye – trees harbor animals above and below the ground; they provide shade and enjoyment to humans; and they are useful for their wood and fruit. Back matter explains the importance of tree root systems and talks a bit about the “wood wide web,” which is trees’ ability to share nutrients with other trees – in effect, they create tree families. This is a powerful idea that will resonate with readers.

The lovely pencil and watercolor art on cream paper shows a village setting with diverse children and families. The art reminds me of the original art from Ludwig Bemelmans’s Madeline, with its dreamy lilting quality. This is a sweet read for families looking to foster curiosity and observation of nature to their little ones.

This book is gentle, poetic, and quietly profound. On the surface, it’s about trees, but just like trees themselves, it goes much deeper than that.
What I truly loved is how Emma Carlisle draws a beautiful, heartfelt analogy between trees and humans: how we grow, how we're shaped by our surroundings, how we're all connected. It speaks softly about family, resilience, uniqueness, and the quiet strength in simply being.
It’s a reminder that we, like trees, grow in different directions, take time to bloom, and are all part of something bigger. And that message, wrapped in dreamy watercolor illustrations and thoughtful questions, hits just right for readers of all ages.
This is one of those picture books that makes you pause, breathe, and maybe even see the world (and yourself) a little differently.

I’m on a mission to find books for my family by checking them out from the library and purchasing our favorites. This is a favorite!

Not only does the book rhyme and have beautiful illustrations (perfect for all ages!) it also educates us on different kinds of trees and how trees can even talk to each other.

This book asks you to think about the trees you see. When did they grow? Who else might have played here? What will they become in the future? A tree can have quite a life.

This is a lovely story that draws the reader's attention to the wonder of trees and how amazing they are. There is information about trees' communication, care for themselves and each other, and how we can learn from trees. Nicely illustrated.
