Sixteen should have been a great age for Violet to enjoy life, but after her mother was killed by a drunk driver, the world became a dull and colorless place. A year later, while cleaning her mother’s bedroom, Violet discovers a box “Before You, During You”.
Inside are journals telling the story of her mother’s life before Violet. One journal stands out to her—one about her parents' love story. Violet scours the written words, desperate to learn something about her father, who up to now has been a total stranger.
With the journal as her guide, she sets out on a journey into the past where Violet will discover not only her mother’s story, but her father’s and her own.
17 years Vi has spent wondering who her father was and if he loved her. At sixteen, she lost her mom and spent a year losing herself to grief. Just after the year anniversary of losing her mother, she finds her dad and has to tell him the love of his life is dead, and she's his daughter. He never knew, and now both of them want nothing more than to connect and make up for all the lost time. They take Vi’s mom's journal that recounts the week Vi’s mom and dad met and go recreate the adventure. Along the way, their relationship grows, and they both heal from the grief. Vi also stumbles into her own romance on the same beach her mom fell in love at.
This is such a cute story, and I love reading the diary entries along the way. Some of the transitions between scenes were very abrupt, and I wish I could have gotten more, but overall I fell in love with Vi and Jax. This book is great at showing that everyone handles and processes grief differently but that everyone also needs support through it.
I received this book as an arc but my review will be 100% honest and open about any faults and flaws.
4.5!! Love, love, love. It’s all I can say to describe this book. It would be a five but I’m not a fan of letters being used to show different povs, but that’s just me. I read this during a reading slump and I can honestly say it was the best thing to read during this time, it was fast paced but the story didn’t feel rushed. The plot was fantastic and well thought out, the characters have my whole heart. This book is definitely something I will and have recommend to others while reading. Thank you for the opportunity to be an arc reader again!

I just can say... Wow!!! I'm a very emotional and sentimental person. And my tears don't stop. If you are an empath, get close to you the box of kleenex. Is a tender story that will squeeze your heart and make you smile and go back to cry. I just love it. I fall in love with this story. The story will catch you, and you will not close the book till you finish. I highly recommend this book.
What a ride! Be ready for emotional roller coaster! Tears of sadness...tears of joy. I loved the use of letters to help tell the story. I could not put this book down and it was a pretty quick read. It's definitely a good YA book that helps show that it's ok to show emotion and talk about how you're feeling.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this baby of mine. A lot of heart and soul went out into this novel and it is and honor to have you chose my book out of millions to read.
