New England 1854: Estella Wellstone, a duty-bound daughter born into Boston’s high society, has approximately one summer until her wedding to the wealthy suitor her family has selected for her. Though she longs to please her family, nothing seems worse to the naive romantic of twenty-one, than recreating her parents' loveless marriage. So, Estella makes up her mind to fall in love with Henry Hamilton.Everything changes when Estella meets Bodaway, a brooding, hot-headed Native American man, running from his guilt, working at her father’s textile mill. She finds it nearly impossible to avoid him while Bodaway can barely stand to be around her childish optimism and her apparent need to help him. But when an injured horse unexpectedly throws them together, the two have no choice but to partner in nursing it back to health in secret. If their meetings are discovered, however, Estella’s honor will appear compromised, risking her family’s prestige and their hopes of her advantageous marriage, while Bodaway could very well be risking his neck, and more importantly, the vow he made to provide for his bedridden brother. The more time Estella spends with Bodaway, the harder she finds it to stand by her resolve and obligation to marry Henry, let alone love the man—especially given the rumors of his recent liaison. When Estella’s family discovers her affection for Bodaway, they put a swift, quiet end to the blossoming relationship and demand she marry Henry Hamilton immediately. Estella must decide if she will pursue Bodaway, the only man who truly has her heart, betraying her duty to her family, or will she sacrifice real love and marry Henry to please her family as a proper lady should?
I was fortunate enough to read this book as it was being written, as the author used to be a friend of mine.
I am older, and have been a bookworm for life.
I loved this story and all the characters that came to life through the pages. No character is just a flat one dimensional person, but fully fleshed out and each one you learn to care for through careful writing. You can tell the author put her heart into this book.
Her descriptions are so vivid and I particularly loved her description of nature.
All in all, a wonderful book to curl up with on a cold day and devour.
This book is hitting me in such a quiet, gentle way. The writing is soft and lyrical and the story feels like it’s guiding you through something personal.it unfolds like a quiet conversation between past wounds and present healing. Emotionally rich and beautifully done. A novel I would highly recommend.
