For the last ten years, Mara has been living under the various shadows of men who would seek to use her power as their own. So, when a fiery encounter with a handsome stranger leads her down a path unknown, she can't quite help but remain a little skeptical. Monsters are monsters. They may vary in size and shape, they might trade brown eyes for blue, but a monster will always be a monster. Cerberus Kai should be no exception.
The Scarlet Dragon, the Hell-hound of Celessinora; Cerberus Kai is more akin to a calamity than a mere criminal. With crimson eyes and the fires of Hell at his fingertips, Mara shouldn't feel so safe under his wing...and yet...
Haunted by a past she can't remember and plagued by memories she'd rather forget, Mara seeks to unravel the mystery of her new captor, and maybe, in the process, solve her own.
Have you been looking for a book to tear your heart out? One that is filled with so much rage and tragedy? One that will make you want to cry and scream at the same time? Then this is the book to check out. “The Dragon and the Nightingale” by Miranda Poteet brings us all on a journey of pain, healing, and an immense rage that comes from the tragedy of the life that Mara has lived. She has lived for 10 years as a slave to multiple different men. All who want to use her powers for their own agenda. They have turned her into a monster. So when freedom finally comes for her, she doesn’t know whether to believe it or to turn and run.
Content wise, there is only minor cursing and no bedroom scenes. We do have some kissing and hints of something more, but, in this book at least, that’s as far as it goes. There is also death and mayhem. As well as mentions of abuse (both sexual and physical) from previous owners. Neither are described in detail, but it’s easy to understand what has happened to her through snippets of memory.
“The Dragon and the Nightingale” by Miranda Poteet is a romantasy with urban fantasy elements and lots of rage. I would recommend it for an older young adult audience due to the minor cursing and some of the mentions of abuse described above. This book was absolutely phenomenal! I highly recommend it! I am so excited to read the next book in the series!

I absolutely loved this book! I feel like Poteet did a phenomenal job of working through all the emotions and skepticism that Mara would have with the life she’s been raised in. The dialogue felt real and applicable, the tensions felt right (both the negative and the positive), and the relationships had history to them. Also, the take the author had on common fantasy creatures (Fae, Sirens, Dragons, Phoenix, etc.) was really interesting. There were mentions of the common mythologies we hear, but then she handled it in a way that it could have once been that way. However, she allowed that maybe it never had. I love it when an author creates their own story like this.
As far as the love story is concerned, this is one of the best I’ve read in a while. The depths that both characters are willing to go for each other are astronomical. This is definitely a tragic love story, but in a way that doesn’t just finish in a complacent attitude. There is a rage in them when tragedy strikes. I feel like this is truly how strong love can be, and to see an author capture that on the page of a book is amazing.

This is a beautifully written and emotionally resonant. Mara’s journey is powerful, raw, and so well done. The pacing gives space for real character growth and emotional depth. The prose is lyrical without feeling too flowery, and the story hits on themes of trauma, healing, and self-empowerment in a really thoughtful way. If you love fantasy that’s character-driven with heart and purpose, I highly recommend this one. Looking forward to the next volume!
