Highlander Heroes #2

The Memory of Her Kiss

Rate this book

Anice Lindsay is a novice at Jardine abbey, whose true calling seems to be getting into trouble. Gregor Kincaid, known as The Fist of Scotland, is a fierce warrior and noble companion to William Wallace.

Gravely wounded and separated from his army, Gregor stumbles upon the exquisite Anice, locked outside of the nunnery in the midst of one of her regular punishments. His decision to save her has more to do with her beguiling blue eyes than his need of assistance.

Anice is only too happy to escape the discontent of Jardine. When the braw chief of the Kincaids rescues her and then promptly collapses from his wounds, she doesn’t think twice about secreting and nursing him until his army comes to collect him.

En route to Stonehaven, the Kincaid fortress by the sea, Gregor struggles mightily against his growing desire for Anice while she innocently and happily surrenders to his kisses. Once safely arrived at Stonehaven, Anice learns the reason behind his resistance: he is betrothed to a woman of an enemy highland family, and the wedding must take place to put an end to years of violence.

Highland intrigue blooms in the background of the great war for Scottish freedom. Setting aside his feelings for Anice in favor of peace in the Highlands, can Gregor live with his choice to put Anice out of his reach, out of his arms, and out of his heart?

Anice is so adorably cute. She makes the whole book worth a read.

Now the rest of the story was just okay. It could have been so much better!

Ooof. I had a take a few deep breaths before writing this review. In the beginning I was sure I would really like Anice and Gregor. I think my first problem is the pacing of the book because the end felt so rushed and unsatisfying. By the end of the book I was annoyed with Anice, and neutral about Gregor at best. There were either too many subplots or not enough development given to each. I really wish I could have been happier about Anice and Gregor when the book did end, but actually I’m Team Torren, and he deserved better!!!

This book took me a long time to complete due to life getting in the way, but I finally finished it. Overall, I enjoyed the writing and the dialogue - all done well, with characterisation and emotion. The story line was interesting in parts, predicable in others, and a little boring in some areas. I found Anice to be strong at times however felt she was mainly a damsel in distress which isn't the type of character I enjoy reading about. Gregor's character was realistic and interesting, though some of his decisions were questionable or just plain stupid. Same with Anice, she wasn't always the smartest character. I enjoyed the chemistry between Gregor and Anice, though felt their "happily ever after" was rushed and done in a predictable way. As mentioned, what I most liked about The Memory of Her Kiss was the writing style and the realistic dialogue, which always add bonus points for me.

this author knows how to tell a good story. I enjoyed the story and her portrayal of William Wallace being a giant. According to wikipedia , Wallace was 6'5" and this doesn't seem like a giant to me. Perhaps people were not so tall back then in Scotland but everything I've read seems to portray most Scottish men as very tall and muscular.
The love story between a novice at a convent and The Fist of Scotland was tender and touching. Anice was very innocent in the ways of men and life in general after spending most of her growing years in a convent where she was deemed incorrigible. Wounded Gregor stumbles upon Anice locked in the stockades for falling asleep during Matins. He frees her then collapses from his wounds. She manages to get him to a healer and tends him. She aids him in finding his army and they take her with them back to his castle, Stonehaven. There she learns the man she has fallen in love with is betrothed to an enemy Clan. She is heartbroken and Gregor decides to send her to his friend at Inesfree.
This story was marvelous but had many grammatical errors. Grammar errors are extremely off-putting and irritating. Also, the Author does not know the difference between prone and supine. It is impossible to be prone and looking up at the stars. Prone is lying on the stomach or front side and Supine is lying on your back.
I gave this book 3 stars because it was such a good tale and would have given it 5 but for the errors.

I really, really liked both MCs. The Hero - what more could I ask for; tall, broad, muscular, handsome and a warrior Laird. The heroine though - I loved her personality, her kind heart and joyfulness but I couldn't for the life of me, really like her. I blame it on the author hahah - for painting her like a small child; with her short hair, waif like figure - somehow, the heroine in my eyes is that of a tomboy and not at all what I would like to see paired with the handsome giant. They just don't match. Her playfulness, her immaturity on many things add to that. However, having said that, I liked the story overall, even though it kind of went dreadful towards 3/4th of the book nothing interesting and could be cut shorter but overall, it was a pleasant one.

No spoilers here! I am reading this series which I am loving...but this book I have especially enjoyed.
1. I read several books per week. I am mostly focused on Scottish historical romance. I am of Scottish descent, love history and fell in love with Scotland and the entire UK when I spent 1 month there.
2. I really like Rebecca Ruger’s style of writing! It is effortless and flows.
3. I love the characters, and there is clever, humorous dialogue that had me laughing out loud. And I can not say that very often.
I am a fan, and because of this I am giving my first ever review! I want, need more from Rebecca Ruger! 👍👍👍👍👍

Novice And A Warrior:
This was a delightful story from an author I had not read before. I truly enjoyed the entire story that was filled with a lot humor, romance, intimacy, excitement, heartache, clan wars, enjoyable characters and so much more.
It was a feel good story.
The romance was very well written and there is some intimacy before marriage but I could have enjoyed a tad bit more heat in the intimate parts, although is was enough to make it a good story.
I will probably read another of her stories and hope they are as good as this one or better.

I EXPECTED MORE FOR THIS STRONG HEROINE

This is the fourth book I've read in this series (books 4, 5, 1 and now 2) and they all share Ms. Ruger's fabulous writing style, great world building, and wonderful characters. Sometimes though it was hard for me to tell where she was going with this one.

Aside from what I mentioned above, there's another excellent feature to these stories—the strong heroines. Not one of them wants to be a damsel in distress. This heroine Anice is something special. Others have been trying to hold her down for most of her life by telling her that she's ugly and incorrigible. But she can't be held down, she has too much spirit. Unfortunately she lives in the medieval period when women weren't permitted much independence. Finding her purpose at Stonehaven was a continuing theme in the story, and I really felt bad for her. She's unconventionally talented and I imagined so many wonderful non-traditional ways for her to evolve. I hope I get to see where Anice goes from here in book 3.

Our hero Gregor can be exasperating. He's a brave and well-intentioned man, if not a bit clueless about how to handle Anice. In his defense Gregor had his hands full trying to protect his clan and fight along side William Wallace for Scotland's freedom. But he keeps Anice dangling from a string for practically the entire book while there's another man at Stonehaven who treats her like gold and would love to have her for his own. It's quite frustrating.

The first 30% of this book, as they make their way back to Stonehaven, sets the tone for Gregor and Anice's relationship, and this foundation is truly delightful. Another of my favorite parts of the story is when Anice is at Inesfree. All of the characters from book 1 are featured generously and move the story forward, in addition to bringing out the best in Anice. There are other significant scenes as well, but what is missing is a retribution scene between the antagonist and Gregor. That was unfortunate.

Ultimately there is an HEA of course. While there were a few things in this story that were a bit unsatisfying to me, I suspect and hope that we will hear more from these characters in upcoming books. This story is full of wit, a wide range of emotions, and a large cast of lovable characters, but not so large that you'll get mixed up about who is who. These books can be read as standalones, but with this particular book I think you'd enjoy it more after having read book 1. This is exactly the time when I needed to find a new author and a new series that I can get lost in, so I look forward to moving on to Book 3.

Color me impressed!!

Wow. I truly did not expect much from a free book on K.U. but this blew me out of the water.

Her writing style reminded me of a beloved author, (God rest her soul) Kathleen Givens and her book Upon a Highland Shore. The stories are not alike, but both authors ability to pull me in and forget all time is the same. As is their ability to write such a tight story; no fluff, and no filler! No repetition at all, and no stupid misunderstandings where the H&H are in a huff at each other the whole story.

This is a solid historical too, with Longshanks (may he rot in hell!), William Wallace and the fight for Scottish independence being shown here.

I absolutely adored the heroine, Anise! I really can't think of words to say about her, except she was a joy to get to know in this story and deserved happiness. Likewise, the hero, Gregor, is all the things I love: loyal, hard worker, keen, even keeled, faithful, and leader of his men, who respect him greatly.

The addition of all of his men and how they bond with Anise just made this story so much greater than it would have been without them. Such developed friendships and loyalty. I cannot wait to read another of her books now. I am highly impressed with this (new to me) author's writing!

Adorable Anice

How can anyone not be in love with Anice? She is such a dear. This is the second book I have read by Rebecca Ruger. The first was a time travel romance, but still firmly set in medieval Scotland, which is rapidly becoming my favourite literature time period. All of the characters were well written, I could vividly picture them all as I read. Anice is adorable and I couldn’t help but fall in love with her myself. Just her innocence and strength combined. There are a couple of tiny negative points. Firstly, some of the chapters were so long. I like to try and read two chapters before bed, but the lengths of some of them saw me bookmarking halfway through a chapter, which really messes with my psyche. The second, I understand Rebecca is a writer from the west side of the Atlantic, and whilst so much effort was put into perfecting the Scottish dialect in speech, some of the English words were spelled in the American spelling of them. Reading as an Englishman this pulled me out of the magic of the scene. But, even with these minor points, it doesn’t detract from this book being a highly deserved five stars. Thank you Rebecca.

It's a 2.5 stars for me... In my opinion the title doesn't suit the story bcz since 1st kiss H and h were together so what to memories about the kiss as they didn't part for longer period 😏and it was not a Forceful separation🙄🙄. Scondly, I didn't find the strong connection b/w H ( Gregor)and h(Anice).. Anice is a cute heroine different from other heroine's and I liked her interaction with Gregor's army. Thirdly, Gregor was ok as a hero for me he was just a portrayed of handsome man I didn't find his character strong 😐. Moreover, story didn't grab my attention bcz nothing wow happened so through last part I was just leafing the pages and when I came to an end after leafing I didn't feel that I have missed something it was still same hero was still thinking either he should marry other woman🙄. I found Torren more heroic than Gregor😁. And I am still thinking how this story got such a high rating🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔.

A Highland Romantic Adventure

This is a refreshing love story between an innocent yet not quite made for the convent heroine and a fierce and honorable warrior. I like the character development and the pace of the story. The moment the hero and heroine meet was touching. There was no instant animalistic chemistry but it was the foundation of a good solid romance. I like that the focus was on the actual characteristics and personalities of the main characters and not on how physically attractive they are (although it was alluded to). The twists and turns kept me reading on. There’s a main villain and some adventures and misadventures. I like that there is humor and passion and action in this story. I wish there was an epilogue though.

The second in Highland Heros series does not disappoint. I absolutely fell in love with the Gregor and Anice, from the first page I was swept away with their trial and tribulations romance. The Memory of Her Kiss is filled it with great cast of strong willed characters that come off the pages and pull you into this emotional ride that keeps you involved until the very end, with steamy passion, witty banter and entertaining situations, and a very enjoyable plot. Rebecca Ruger brings a few characters from the first book and it was good to catch up with them. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and brings this read together perfectly!

Great book.

Laird Gregor Kincaid is wounded during a battle in support of William Wallace. He finds himself at the entrance to Jardine Abbey where he discovers Anise in the stocks. Anise has been at Jardine for 7 years studying to be a nun but finds she is not very good at it. Gregor releases her from the stocks but soon weakens from his injury and Anise abandons the abbey and gets him to a healer. She saves him. Then he saves her when he offers to take her home with him. Soon she wins the hearts of Gregor and his men. This is a great historical romance with well developed characters, historical context, and interesting storyline.

exciting, love, thriller and mystery all in one

A woman sent to live out her days in a nunnery because she is not seen as attractive saves the life of a man who happens to be a laird, runs away with him and suffers pain, a near rape and humiliation from many within the castle and community. The story is well plotted, and the characters well developed. Many twists and turns kept this exciting. A well written book.

It's been ages since I read a Highlander story but this one was free on Amazon so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm glad I did because I thoroughly enjoyed it. My first book by this author but it won't be my last, in fact the first book in the series will be my next read.

Surprising and Fresh Romance

Historical Romance is not my usual category, but I took a chance on this one, and I am glad I did. Rebecca Ruger has written an enjoyable story with 3 dimensional characters, good pacing and a strong story line. This is a writer to watch.
