Alec MacBriar crashes into the cottage of a healer and drops his wounded captain onto the table, commanding that the woman save his friend. Katie Oliver is terrified of the giants in her small home, but has no choice but to comply, hoping only to tend the wounded man and send them on their way, praying they cause no trouble to her or her son.
Her existence is meager, but for her son’s sake Katie faces each new day with a brave conviction that things will get better. The goliaths in her home are sorely testing her resolve, especially Alec MacBriar with his intense gaze and fierce ways.
When Katie is threatened by a local man, Alec is compelled by his own captain to bring Katie and her son with them to their home in the Highlands. He’ll keep his promise to his captain, but he wants nothing to do with Katie Oliver and her moody blue eyes or her charming child.
At Swordmair, Katie’s life is far better and richer. In fact, it would be near perfect if not for the very disagreeable attraction she felt for Alec MacBriar and his bone-melting kisses.
I have loved this series, every single book. Devoured them one after another. I can't even decide which hero or heroine or story I like best. Every character, even the secondary characters are brought to life so fully and wonderfully, and the world building is so rich. I'll miss this series, but I look forward to Torren and Muriel's novella, and maybe if we're lucky Ms. Ruger will someday gift us with a few more of her Highlander stories that she writes so beautifully. A second generation series would be amazing.
I have a special place in my heart for Katie—the fact that she has a real profession and is good at it and knows she's valuable to her community, even if she isn't appreciated for it. She's basically had nothing her whole life long except her talent, perseverance, and her child. Yet she has so much to give. Alec on the other hand—you have to work a little harder to like him. Both the reader and the characters have to read between the lines to understand him. We finally learn about his time spent with Lachlan and Iain in English captivity and how that and war in general effected their personalities. Alec's trauma is deeply hidden beneath his brutish demeanor. Neither the H nor the h allow themselves happiness or recognizes love when it hits them in the face.
This is a tension and action filled story. The battle scenes in particular are exceptional, being so precisely detailed I felt like I was right there with a bird's eye view, watching it all take place. It's here we're introduced to an extraordinary secondary character worthy of her own story—Eleanor, an imposing and impressive female warrior. I can think of very few secondary characters in any book that I appreciate more than Eleanor.
With its strong female characters, fragile but uber-masculine male characters, powerful and vast emotions complete with humor, and the perfectly descriptive writing style, this book (and this series) is an engrossing read. It's a very pleasant blend of great story telling and good technique. 100% recommend.
This series just kept getting better. I was kind of waiting for some great big conflict or villain in Alec and Katie’s story but it was just a really lovely read. Nothing crazy dramatic or insane and yet I still absolutely loved it. Henry is adorable. Maddie and Alexander are precious. I love Elle. And I love Malcolm. Somehow this story was everything I wanted. So satisfying!
If you enjoy stories about Highlanders and their big hearts and families, you will love this book.
Katie was a widow with a sweet son, Henry. She was poor and a healer. She wasn't treated kindly by those around her. One day a group of big brawny Highlanders show up at her door. Alec drops a very large wounded man, Malcom, on her table. Alec threatens her to make sure she does her job as healer or else. Katie is afraid of these men. But also afraid of a mean tempered man from the area who has no good intentions. The circumstances in her life are hand to mouth. But the wounded highlander, Malcom, wakes up and convinces her to go with them to their home in the north of Scotland. Alec doesn't smile and follows her around grumbling about this or that. Katie decides to go with them but isn't sure she has made the right decision. When she arrives she is enchanted with the people she meets in her new home. There are Alec's parents. And Eleanor who Henry adores. And Alec who she tries to ignore. There is no end to wanting to learn more about these people. It ended too soon.
Alec is a warrior and future laird. After a battle that seriously wounds is captain Malcolm he bursts through the door of the healers home and demands she heal him or die herself. Katie, the healer, and her son live alone in the cabin. Alec is harsh and Katie is afraid but still does her job. When Malcom is ready to move, they convince Katie and her son to travel with them to protect her from an unwanted suitor. She is wounded along the way but heals quickly. She and her son are happy with their new home and Katie’s attraction to Alec grows and his for her as well. This is a sweet love story that has the usual challenges of uncertainty, misunderstanding and mistrust in the beginning. Enjoyed the book and the characters.
I enjoyed this series very much. While each book is a stand alone story, the first three books act as a sort of trilogy with character-crossover, the same with the last three books. Rebecca Ruger always delivers beautifully composed prose against a historical backdrop with appealing characters, dastardly villains and lots of action. She deftly paints longing from his and her perspectives. The first kisses are always breathless and the endings always sweet, with good measures of tension and spice in between. Her epilogues are like a big beautiful bow on top of a pretty present. To have all this narrated by the delicious voice of Stewart Crank, who turns a fine Scottish brogue, made this series my obsession.
This is the third book I've read by this author, and I've come to love her books. Her books always have a psychological context, with many emotional dramas involved, featuring strong heroines who don't give in. This book is no different: the heroine is quite tormented, very poor, raises her son with great sacrifice, but remains very honorable and hardworking. Obviously, the hero quickly falls in love with her, and that's where the misunderstandings begin, perfectly fitting the book's title. It was the first book I read in the series, and although it doesn't compromise the story, characters from the others appear in this book, so I think it's worth reading them in order. But it's a great book, and I recommend it.
Sizzling Sensuous Highland Healer Story Not To Miss: I love stories about healers and this was a wonderful tale from the beginning to the very last word. I just haven't been able to get enough of this series and this authors writing encompasses every emotion you could possibly want in a romance story. The attraction between Alec and Katie was sizzling with heated passion that had my heart pounding, intimacy had my toes curling, heartfelt confessions that had me in tears. I loved this story and I would recommend it to any mature romance reader. One of those stories you hate to see end. Mature Reader: ✔ Heat level: 3 out of 5 Intimacy before marriage: ✔
Rebecca Ruger has written captivating love stories in this series. Stories that are adventurous and historically factual as well as humorous and heart-rending. The characters, whether heroes or heroines, villains, or supporting cast, are incredibly real and unforgettable. I loved each story and could not put any one of them down. This series is my favorite of Ms Rugers, so far! Thank you, Rebecca, for sharing your honed writing skills, entertaining the romantics we are, and educating us on the historical period the stories cover. D. Ash
This book was wonderful. Just like the other books in this series, the characters are well-written and I liked them immediately. There was a lot of emotions throughout the book. Sadness, love, and happiness. I found myself laughing out loud a few times. Katie was definitely the healer that Alec needed. I also loved Elle and Malcolm. That would have been a good book as well. This book can be read alone, but the series is absolutely fabulous.
This was a great series of books. The author told each story just enough differently to hold my interest through book. I very much enjoyed her style of writing, she made me see things through the characters eyes & I felt I was living along side the people in the books. I especially enjoyed that the male characters were tied together by Scotland’s war for independence.
I imagine you could each one as a stand alone but you would miss so much. There is enough adventure, comedy and romance for everyone. Even though nothing is factual with just a few names you can bring history to life the stories my heart for what the Scottish people went through all for greed. The hardest part is we never seem to learn from the past and continue to relive all the horrors that greed brings.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. The author is fantastic and gives such detailed descriptions that you feel as though you can actually see what is being described. There was a great deal of action and adventure in each of these novels. I recommend this Highland series!
Have read all six books in this series, author has done a wonderful job writing these, each book connect each book its own story and characters, each book it own suspense, emotional roller coaster ride. Definitely a must read by all who love this genre of books. Thanks to the author, hope more are forth coming
A good way to start a storyline, kept my attention from the start. Alex and Katie clashed from the start, he seems like a bully always gets what he wants, Katie will protect her son with her life. Will these two ever get along? They are misunderstood, brought me to tears. Like this series.
I don’t understand why the birth of Elle’s baby was not included, and no sex of babe even said.
Overall I enjoyed this final book on hero’s - but it just seemed rushed and if there was one more talk of kissing I was going to give up. I loved the plot but this book just didn’t flow for me.
The series was okay, but could’ve done with the author doing a little bit more research into the 12th century Scotland and using more English terms and Scottish terms rather than American terms and researching what men and women wore in the 12th century and what things were as some of the things mentioned we’re not available until the 18th hundred
The entire Highlander Heroes series is exceptional. I fell in love with the characters, the settings, the timelines. Rebecca Ruger does an excellent job of describing the many details that bring the story to life! I am only so sad that there are no more stories in this series!
I started this series at book 5 and got a taste of this trio of friend. I fell in love with Alec and Katie - their passion and ignorance. Now I need to know more about Elle and Malcolm, they just seem like so much fun. And I want her to feel love. Going back to read the others now.
This was probably my favorite in this series. It made me laugh and cry..kept me up way too late finishing it. A great love story about healing hearts and finding happiness. It would be great to discover Katie’s family. Really, a great read!!
I just finished book # 6 of Highland Heroes, and they were all very interesting. Great stories and I found so much interest the what the characters went through and where they ended up.
In 1298 Alec caught a wee critical something in prison to eat. At home in 1307 Alec’s man hurt goes to Katie a healer for help. When he leaves he takes her to his home. In 1308 he is expecting his first child with Katie.
