The rules of war are few, stay alive and win. In a world of essence and runes, anything is fair game.
After leading the charge to reclaim Promithia’s northern border, Raya Ontaria—a fearsome warrior and a powerful wielder of a magic called essence—is captured and held prisoner at the court of Corath. Rather than auction her off to the highest bidder, the malicious king seems to have other sinister plans in mind.
Just as all hope seems lost, an unforeseen rescue comes from none other than the cunning Prince of Corath himself, Orion Valor.
As Raya slowly begins to trust Orion, they join forces. In their pursuit to end the 300-year war that has terrorized both their kingdoms, an unexpected spark ignites between them, yearning to be set ablaze.
There’s just one problem: Raya is already entangled with the queen of Promithia. Spurning her powerful lover could extinguish any chance of peace talks while also risking Raya's claim as heir to the wealthiest region in the realm.
Can Raya resist the force driving her and Orion together? Or does fate have other plans?
Mortal enemies turn into unexpected allies. An arcane power arises. The adventure of a lifetime begins.

Taylor Lynn resides right outside of New York City where she works as a recruiter in the entertainment industry. An avid reader and writer, she has always loved the art of storytelling and hopes to create worlds that immerses readers into the adventure. When she’s not writing (or reading), you can find her exploring new restaurants in the city, binge watching her favorite shows, or spending time with her partner and dog. Essence and Runes is her first novel.
Epic fantasy romance that's fast paced, has great characters, fun banter, feisty warriors, magic, plot twists, and a love triangle / steamy romance. This is such a wonderful fantasy world to fall into. I need the next book!
ACTUAL RATING 4.25 ⭐️ This book has you diving straight into a battlefield on future Earth. Humans are not what they used to be and now wield different types of magic gifted from the spirits who saved the race from complete destruction, while still facing many of the issues we have dealt with forever.. war, shortage of resources, discrimination, etc. The FMC, Raya, is a badass! I love that this book begins by showing how competent she is both in her role in Her story is a roller coaster of emotions, but in the best way (as a reader anyway). It makes her story very real…She was shown as a multifaceted woman. Strong and caring, kind and commanding, but with true fears and hopes for her future. I truly can’t wait for the next book to come out and and keeping my fingers crossed to get picked for the ARC team!!!!

Mrs. Taylor Lynn come to the front of the room because you have done the thing girl omg!!
I will be promoting this book from the rooftops, another 5⭐️ read this year! Thank goodness I have the serpents & shadows ARC because I will be starting book 2 like yesterday.
If you like ACOTAR, you’ll love this. Imagine Feyre isn’t wimpy or uneducated, she’s actually strong and a general. OH and the characters are black and diverse. Def feeling that Rhys and Tamlin dynamic with Orion and Xander, but I hate that because they are friends😭 but I know it’s gonna go down next book.
RIP Rayas dad man 😭😭
I actually loved Sarana and Raya together I hate that they had to end that way, it was such an amazing start and surprise to the book!
I was messing with Orion until he tried to force my girl into marriage like huh???? Xander did come out of nowhere, but I am loving their dynamic he is such a peace and calmness for Raya.
Raya I knew you were that girl but that ending showed you are REALLY that girl!!
There is not a lot of black fantasy out there, and it doesn’t always get the love and light it deserves. I had the honor of meeting Taylor Lynn at Black Romance Book Fest and she and this book deserve allll the hype and praise!! 10 out of freaking 10!!
I’m always so appreciative to be chosen as an ARC reader and getting to read this book is no exception.
To be honest, I was starting to think I wasn’t going to rate this book very high. I was struggling because the writing and plot are good, but there was something about specific characters I did not like even though I felt like I was being directed to do so. However, the writer hits you with a curveball at the end that makes it worth it!
If you’re reading and thinking, “Damn, this part of the story is annoying me but I think I’m supposed to like it,” just keep going. The writer knows what she’s doing. 😉
A great fantasy read to add to your TBR if you like Angelina J. Steffort and Jennifer L. Armentrout!
This book was oh so good! I had no idea where this journey would take me and where all of the characters would end up. Taylor Lynn wrote an exceptionally strong FMC and got gritty with the details. This book explores love, loss, lust, friendship, some found family sprinkled in, and really delves deep into the exploration of finding oneself. I'm so happy I got to read this captivating beginning of an epic fantasy romance, I already can't wait for book 2!
WHOA. This book blew me away! I went in blindly as I always do, and was floored with everything that happened! From Raya’s bad*** warrior vibes, to Orion’s predictable yet rebellious voice, to Xander’s mysterious and secretive nature and then that ending?!? What just happened?!?!
There were so many moments I thought I knew what was happening and how the plot was going to develop, but I am glad at how wrong I was with each and every twist! And then I thought I knew who I was shipping as my OTP but damn the author changed that up and now who I thought was endgame isn’t really endgame??? Damn… I’m speechless and so damn ready for book 2 because I need answers!!!
Firstly, thank you to Taylor Lynn for the opportunity to read the ARC copy of this book!
Overall thoughts: 5⭐️ 2🌶️ If you like a fantasy book that never skips a beat, you’ll love this! Fast paced & never a dull moment!
I love how the romance in the book was woven into the story. Romance features FF & MF scenes. With a sprinkle of spice out the gate to pull you in, great banter & the ending, I’m hooked! (Give me book 2!! The excerpt from book 2 as well🫢)
Easy to consume fantasy elements. I especially love the essences and how they play into combat! 🔥🌪️
Highly recommend if you enjoyed: ACOTAR, The Witcher, Throne of Glass, Fourth Wing
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, forced proximity
Loved it, had a great time reading! Book releases on 16th April 2024
First of all, thank you to Taylor Lynn for providing me with an ARC of this book.
4.5 ⭐️ I didn’t know what to expect from this book and had neither high nor low expectations for it. But my god, once I got a few chapters through I was hooked and found any moment I could to read it. This book felt like an easy fantasy read but also gave me moments of anxiety and thrill which I love. What made it easy was that the magic system was simple to understand and I never found myself confused throughout. Sometimes I find that when I’m reading fantasy it’s a real brain workout, but this book, as a very high compliment, wasn’t that. It was just a wonderful fantasy world that was well explained and easy to follow. I’m also absolutely in love with the characters. The twists and turns in this book were exciting and I’m very intrigued to see how this series progresses! I would say this book would be the perfect introduction to fantasy for anyone who hasn’t delved into the genre yet.
I was excited to be selected as a beta reader and ARC reader for Taylor Lynn's debut book in her first series! Essence and Runes was a great fantasy book that had unique elemental magic and rune magic woven in. The setting takes place in a world post-humans destroying the Earth - and the spirits coming in to change things, which was an interesting concept. The characters included Raya, a badass FMC who would do anything for her family and her people. Orion, the prince, who brought an element of mystery and secrets. Other characters including the Queen Sarana + Xander the warrior (super intriguing) and others helped the story with their comraderies and fight for peace.
The book includes war and strategy and passion and spice and grief. There were a couple of twists too, which I enjoyed as a reader!
Sarana to Raya, page 319: "I sense a great adventure on your horizon. Do not be afraid to chase the stars."
Tropes/themes: ✔️ enemies to lovers ✔️ forced proximity ✔️ fantasy ✔️ love triangle ✔️ elemental magic ✔️ grief ✔️ FF spice ✔️ FM spice
A great start to a fun story and series. Two strong countries continuing a long war in which both sides do not know the true cause of. Raya, the Dutchess of Senna and a Lieutenant in Promithian's forces, gets captured by her enemy's forces and becomes a prisoner to the King of Coranth. When she gets given to the Prince in his birth rite, Raya now may have a means to end a war she does not believe in.
This was a story that keeps a reader intrigued. Lynn does a fantastic job of explaining military strategies, political dynamics and war crimes, all while painting the picture of an unjust King vs a Queen who is unsure if neutrality and peace is a viable option. Lynn opens the dialog to allow the reader to follow the narrative while also creating doubt in the credibility in the FMC and the country Raya has been pitted against. If Raya's choices are always made for her, than is she really creating a difference and can she really play an integral part in ending the war.
The world building in this story was great and I look forward to seeing where Lynn takes the story moving forward.
Essence and Runes starts with two kingdoms at war, Promithia and Corath. In an effort to put an end to the fighting, one of Promithia’s top generals, Raya Ontaria, devises a plan which ultimately has her captured by the enemy. A trophy prize of war, Raya is held prisoner by Corath’s king, tortured and paraded around like an animal. When the Prince of Corath, Orion, claims Raya through his Birthright, she is allowed to trade the imprisonment of the malicious King for a seemingly larger cage, and is placed under the Prince’s protection. As trust between Raya and the Prince continue to grow, the war between Promithia and Corath continues to rage. Will Raya and Orion be able to broker peace between two courts with such a deep history of violence and distrust? Or will Raya’s shifting alliances produce more problems for the kingdoms?
I am INCREDIBLY impressed that this is Taylor Lynn’s debut novel! It was incredibly well written, set in an interesting fantastical world with fascinating characters. The main challenge for any fantasy novel is getting the who/what/when/where of the world established, and Lynn accomplished this incredibly well. I was also enamored with our FMC! She is so strong, cunning and passionate. I was rooting for her the entire time, and am dying to know how the next party of the story goes! I highly recommend this book!
Tropes in this story: ✨ Elemental magic ✨ Enemies to lovers ✨ Love triangle ✨ FF and MF love ✨ Cliffhanger ending… can’t wait to see what happens next!
There are a few triggers that the author included for this book. None of them were upsetting to me in any way!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the author, but my review is all my own. Thank you for the honor of reviewing your book!
Fantasy has been one of my go-to genres over the last year so finding them on my Currently Reading list isn’t anything new. Essence and Runes by Taylor Lynn, however, might have just snagged a place in my top 5. • What I loved about it: ➸ Easy to read and quick paced fantasy (perfect for fantasy noobs) ➸ Enemies to allies/lovers ❤️🔥 ➸ War/battle themes ⚔️ ➸ Strong main characters • Essence and Runes is full of fantasy, magic, war and of course some steaming hot spice. 🌶️ Lynn did a wonderful job at keeping the storyline simple, yet deep enough to keep me entranced. Sometimes fantasies can be a little overwhelming - diving into a world so unlike our own. It can be a lot to take in and to keep up with. This book is properly paced and so well-written that I never once had to stop and re-read things. • Enemies to lovers is my all-time favorite trope, and Essence and Runes didn’t disappoint in serving me just that. The main characters were strong and built up extremely well. I love some romance, but I also appreciate when the author keeps the characters strong to who they are despite falling ever so deeply into their feelings. • This book does have some trigger warnings which are plainly stated in the beginning so definitely read over those before diving in. • Overall, I highly recommend Essence and Runes to really any fantasy lover, but especially those who are new to the genre and just want to dip your toes in. You won’t be disappointed. • Miss Lynn, bravo, my love! Thank you for allowing me to read this. You should be proud of your work. Very well done! 🫶🏻
Before diving in (Troupes): 💙 Enemies to lovers 💙 Multiple love interests 💙 Strong FMC 💙 FF romance/ Bisexual rep 💙 Spice 🌶️🌶️ 💙 Political alliances 💙 Multiple times of Magic
I started this book while on vacation; I found myself continually wanting to get back into the world and learn more!
Once I got home, I finished it in one sitting. 𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃! I truly don’t know where we are going for book two. But I am excited to follow the FMC through the unpredictability of this series. It’s a breath of fresh air to enter the unknown.
I am so GRATEFUL to have had the chance to read this ARC, as well as the little surprise at the end. I will definitely be preordering book two when I can & I HIGHLY recommend preordering and reading this as soon as it comes out!!
I have read several fantasy books this year, and this has been one of my favorites. Taylor really knows how to build a plot & throw in just the right amount of twists to keep you enraptured in every page. This book is set in a fantasy world with kingdoms at war & magic abound. The residents of the realm have control over elemental & rune magic that they wield like an extra weapon in battle. One human in particular, Raya, has used her skills with the blade & magic to become a fearsome warrior. However, that can do little to protect her when her battle plan goes horribly wrong & she is captured and made into a “pet” for the King of Corath (think King of Adarlan from Throne of Glass…seriously evil!) Lucky for Raya, she has already captured the heart of the Queen of her kingdom who will stop at nothing to save her….but it’s not just the Queen who seeks to save her. Orion, Prince of Corath (and her ENEMY!) has also taken notice of her (gasp!). Which one can save her? Which one can have her? Or will she save herself? I hope you enjoy following Raya as she fights for her heart, her freedom, & her kingdom as much as I did. I’m already eagerly waiting for Book 2!
I can’t even tell you how excited I am for the rest of the world to read this book for the first time! I was privileged enough to receive the ARC and that’s exactly what it was to have early access to this level of writing - a privilege! I adored it I devoured it and honestly it’s given me the biggest book hanger I need moreeeee! I don’t want to reveal any spoilers but I was captivated from start to finish, the world building the character development the unique magic system the absolute badass female lead it’s everything you want and more and I haven’t felt this way since ACOTAR!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book, and I am so glad I did as I have had the pleasure of entering a brand new world of fantasy that I can't wait to explore. The FMC is well written and the perfect mix of woman and warrior. I am so excited to see how her story develops, and I am eager to see how her relationships with Orion, Xander, and Sarana continue. I am desperate for book 2, but I know it will be worth the wait.
The book is told from the female main character, Raya’s, point of view. I really liked her as the main character; she was strong, intelligent, unafraid to make hard decisions, and didn’t need anyone to save her.
The book was well-written and interesting. The magic system was unique, and I would have liked to learn more about it. The characters and world were well-introduced.
The side / supporting characters were interesting and helped propel the story forward. Both Sarana and Orion were great, and I would love to learn more about them.
There were some romantic moments, but romance wasn’t the sole focus of the story.
The storyline was easy to follow and kept me engaged. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
I enjoyed this book so much! Taylor Lynn truly has a gift for interweaving lore & world building w/ witty banter & plot. Lynn’s writing style is effortless & I was pulled into the story right away. The strong character development throughout the book for the FMC, MMC, & even side characters, made the story immersive & the characters come alive on the page. The pacing of the book was great & I remained captivated through the very end. I was so excited for the bisexual rep in this book & it did not disappoint! The spice was spice-in & was just as spicy w/ both the FMC’s male & female partners. With plenty of intrigue & fascinating magic system, I am definitely locked in for the remainder of the series. I was very glad that Lynn included a sneak peak of book 2 at the end of “Essence and Runes” as it helped eased the book hangover for me. Just a bit. I still need book 2 asap though.
I love all of the twists in this story you aren’t expecting. Raya is a strong FMC working through all of her emotions. She loves fast but deeply and you just want her to get it reciprocated 100%. The ending of this book will have you on the edge of your seat.. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the next one to see the story continue! What’s in that dang forest?!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. This book was nothing like I expected! I’m just getting into the fantasy books! I loved this book, it only got better as I kept reading. Love triangle! Yes! Enemies to lovers! Check! Orion is so kind to raya! 🫶🏻
Raya goes through a lot in this book; from heartache to heartbreak, she still manages to come out the other side fighting. She is a strong FMC with an initial goal of befriending a prince but as the plot thickens, her priorities change.
The plot is cohesive & is paced well & narratives of the magic system are well explained.
Although there were parts i felt were a little jumbly, & could have been told slightly earlier in the book, i understood why the author had done this as it was the right point in the book to bring it up. I practically inhaled this & couldn't put it down.
That being said, its an enjoyable book that keeps the excitement going & now I cant wait for book 2!
-Unique magic system -Set in a very unique future -FF & MF love connections -Strong FMC
⚠️ Please check the Content Warnings! This book contain sexual graphic content, torture and more.
To start, I LOVE unique magic systems. I always get seriously excited when I read a new one and it’s wholly unique. And while yes, some of the actual “powers” used here have been used in other worlds, the system itself, where they come from, is not something I have seen before and I absolutely love it!
This book kept me locked in the whole time! There was not a single part of the book that slowed or I felt like I struggled to get through! So many twists and turns! And I’m excited to read the next book (that I received as an ARC and had to read through this one before starting. The next part is I don’t have to wait to read Book 2. 😂)
I love our FMC. She’s strong, sassy, and tired of everyone’s bs! Being the oldest, Raya feels the weight on her shoulders. Her father’s approval, her people and her country’s needs, her sister’s need for support, her Queen’s expectations, all of it. If I were her, I’d be tired as hell at this point.
I’m not going to comment *too* much on our MMC. I love him, but he made a pretty b if mistake there and who knows if he can fix it.
The spice 🌶️🌶️.5 🥵 The spice scenes are delicious! 🤤 It’s like you can actually FEEL the sexual tension coming off the pages. They are written extremely well. They don’t feel over the top or overdone. Sometimes I think authors who write spicy scenes do too much because they want to stand out and hurts their books more than helps them. Taylor did an amazing job writing these scenes with a perfect balance!
I’m left with soooooo many unanswered questions! 😱😭 So I’m gonna finish this review now and hop over to Book 2! I finish Book 1 at about 11pm so it looks like I’m not getting sleep tonight so I can get through Boom 2. 🤣

- interesting magic system - FABULOUS world building - strong and fearless FMC - FF and FM spice - sexual fluidity - rescues and forced proximity - emotional connection - great pacing - prophecy and reincarnation
What an unexpectedly beautiful and emotional book! This is a fabulous read - the characters are developed so well, the world building is effortless and interesting, and the plot twists are GOLD. Raya is so courageous, she’s so steadfast, and I love her spark. Orion is a world class MMC and is so much more than he seems, I feel a love triangle coming on! I cannot wait to see where this story goes and will be following the author closely for book two! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Book review: Raya is a war hero and battle hardened warrior, joining her father in his legacy while fighting a centuries long war between two kingdoms. Her plan to try and end it is risky, but seems the best course of action, until she is captured in the midst of battle and suffers devastating loss. In the dungeons of Corath, she is held prisoner while also being paraded around the court, the subjects leering at her at night, while she is tortured by the king during the day. She is finally saved by a mysterious stranger, the prince of the kingdom, and while living with him in a separate castle, they build a tentative trust based on their desire to end the war, with the knowledge that their plans are risky and will test their friendship. They grow to care for one another, but is it the birthrite bond that builds on their lust, or is it a true love?
First, a massive thank you to @taylorlynnwrites for the privilege of this ARC!
Raya Ontaria, a fabled soldier of the kingdom of Promithia and the future Duchess of her region is taken prisoner by the rival kingdom of Corath. It seems she is doomed to a life of torture and being paraded about as the King’s plaything until an unlikely ally comes to her aid. The Prince of Corath himself reveals his loyalties, and as they warm to one another hoping to end the 300-year war between their kingdoms, Raya cannot deny her feelings. Peace talks are in the cards, but for Raya to spurn her lover, the Queen of Promithia for the Prince of Corath places any hope of war’s end in jeopardy with more bloodshed on the horizon.
This is it. This is the book I will be yelling loudly at all of you to read for the rest of the year and beyond. You’ll love this if you enjoyed Throne of Glass, The Witcher, and anything Jennifer L Armentrout.
Raya is a strong, no-nonsense warrior, and I love everything about her. The banter between characters is funny, heartbreaking, venemous—everything it needed to be in each scene. The pacing makes for an action-packed ride of an adventure. The romance is well-balanced and pleasantly slow-burning at times. The magic system is interesting, and the world-building is not overwhelming.
Just when you think you know the drill, Taylor swoops in with some twists and turns. I truly had a blast reading Essence and Runes, and I am on the edge of my seat for book two!
What to expect: 🗡️Elemental magic 🗡️Warring kingdoms 🗡️Enemies to allies to lovers 🗡️Hidden powers
Review: Essence and Runes kept me on my toes! Taylor did so amazing weaving together such a unique and special world with strong and interesting characters. I was so intrigued by the magic system and how the powers of essence and runes played a part in each characters’ powers. I especially appreciated the chart at the beginning that breaks this down. I enjoy anything that has to do with elemental magic and I loved Taylor’s take on it.
Taylor had me questioning my thoughts on different characters and I loved it! I was shocked and not expecting the ending to play out the way it did. I could not put the book down few chapters of the book! Raya is our FMC and I love seeing strong and resilient female characters. My heart went out to her and her wanting to just feel free for once in her life. Time and again, the choice is made for her and I’m so happy she took charge and demanded the respect she deserves.
I am excited to see where book two goes after the big reveal. I cannot wait to see what direction Raya’s choices take her friends, the kingdom and of course, Orion and Xander. I will say, I will always root for a shadow daddy!! Overall, I was invested in the story and know Raya is just going to grow into an even stronger and badass character and I am here for it! Thank you Taylor for the opportunity to review and ARC of Essence and Runes!
Honestly frustrating because this book has so much potential, the execution just felt off. It starts very strong and is an easy read overall, but once Raya is with Prince Orion, her personality shifts in a way that doesn’t match what you’d expect from a hardened warrior who’s endured days of torment.
And Prince Orion… I truly don’t know who this man is supposed to be. His personality felt painfully bland. For a second he’s supposed to be arrogant with the smirking prince energy, but he’s just a generic nice guy. Nothing compelling about him and Raya and Orion’s chemistry is just blah. I felt zero emotional connection to him. Ironically, I felt more invested in Xander, who shows up halfway through.
The Sarana as an LGBTQIA partner was an interesting but I don’t see why Raya has to explain herself about her sexuality to the prince a day or so after she’s released from the king. It just felt awkward and forced rather than meaningful.
The magic system itself is cool in concept, but the explanations mostly happen in quick “drive-by” moments during action scenes, and Raya barely even uses her abilities for much of the book. On top of that, we’re introduced to several side characters we’re clearly supposed to care about, but instead of feeling their importance, we’re just told who they are and why they matter to the FMC.
In the end, all the right pieces were there, just not in the right places.

(Tried to give enough info without spoilers, but readers beware)
I really enjoyed the storyline! Something different! Magical but also dystopian? There was a very random and brief moment where they talked about the old world, but we were given no other information. Possibly something to be touched on in a future book. I really liked the characters, they seemed real. I had a very crushing moment when we discover who/how the war started. To say I rolled my eyes and threw up in my mouth a bit at the unfortunate parallels of our society today would be an understatement (this is a knock at our society and not at the book). God, I hope (real life) we don't end up in a war over this for the next 300 years...
****DEFINITE SPOILERS BELOW**** * ** *** **** *** ** * I really liked our FMC! She's very likable and the people around her are very likable. Though I do feel like our boy Oli is going to have some sort of good and evil power battle within. But I do hope our girl ends up with Shadowman, Azriel, *Cough* I mean Xander. He is way more likable. I'm ready for book two @Taylor Lynn, so whenever you're ready!
Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC for my honest review.
