It was very informative, insightful and captivating. Chester has an uncanny way of explaining historical events and those involved. This was the first time I really read the origins of Rome in lengthy detail, although I’m sure there is much that was cut due to time’s sake. I feel like I know Roman history better, I always knew the story of Romulus and Remus, but beyond that I didn’t have a great knowledge of what happened next.
Towards the end I think she could have added Cesar’s reign and rule of Rome, as well as his expedition to Egypt. It also could have mentioned the road ahead with Octavian rising to power.
Overall it was a great book, I’ll be checking out the others…
This book is well put together and of high quality with interesting stories for kids who love Ancient Rome. Definitely requires a prior knowledge of Rome and some of its key characters as stories don’t necessarily go into detail explaining who is who. I’d also say reading age is 13+ as some of the Roman themes include violence.
These stories of ancient Rome are in the best tradition of story telling. I could only reluctantly put it down. The author gives human faces to the characters we've known through myth and history.
Each story is short and exciting, so you don't need to know anything about Roman history to enjoy it. Think of it as a fun crash course in the world of chariots, togas, and epic battles—all without needing to be a history buff.
This is a collection of 20 tales which are great and which you will enjoy. Each one is different and tells you something different I received an advance copy from hidden gems and I want to review
