Rain Christiansen is settling into married life with fellow cold case detective, Daniel McKenna, and life is good. Better than good, even. But when it comes to the topic of expanding their family, Rain isn't so sure he's ready. Yes, a new addition could enrich their lives. But it could also tear down the delicate balance they’ve worked so hard to achieve. Do they really want to take that risk?
He’d love to brood over that a little more, but murder never takes a day off. A decade-old mystery of the missing Parker family is heating up. Most seem to think the Parkers pulled a disappearing act to get out of financial debt. It isn’t before the PTU finds out the reality is far grimmer than that. It seems that Quinn stumbled upon something better left hidden. Now that Rain has stumbled upon it, too, he has to be careful that he doesn’t meet the same fate.
Sometimes it amazes him how far he’s come from strait-laced FBI agent who couldn’t admit—even to himself—that he saw ghosts. He’s done the work, learning to get some measure of control of his paranormal side. And while his relationship with ghosts may not be perfect, it’s evolved into something symbiotic... which is a very good thing. Because in order to protect himself from the living, he might need a little help from the dead.
S.E. Harmon has had a lifelong love affair with writing. It's been both wonderful and rocky (they've divorced several times), but they always manage to come back together. She's a native Floridian with a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Fine Arts, and used to spend her time writing educational grants. She now splits her days between voraciously reading romance novels and squirreling away someplace to write them. Her current beta reader is a nosy American Eskimo who begrudgingly accepts payment in the form of dog biscuits. http://seharmon.weebly.com/
It was so wonderful to be back in this world with this amazing set of characters. Rain and Danny deserve all the stars. I love them so much and I couldn't be happier with where they are in their relationship. The ending was lovely and so very fitting for both of them.
The mystery was intriguing and well thought out. I really liked how the investigation unfolded. Some parts were too gruesome and unsettling for me, so I had to skim a bit. It's the only thing that affected my enjoyment of this book. Luckily, there was a lot of humor and banter to balance it out.
I still hope we'll get Dakota's book in the future. 😊
There may have been a slight indication that The Spooky Life was going to be the last book in this well loved series, so I’m simply happy we got another book about ghost whisperer Rain and his steady as rock hubby Danny.
I don’t want to ruin the mystery that awaits readers, but it should come as no surprise that a ghost’s plea for Rain to help find her missing daughters uncovers something far more grim and grisly than he and his team could ever suspect.
In and amongst the investigation, Rain’s droll antisocial humor continues to entertain as he and Danny navigate their chaotic lives. They are more than content to remain in their marital bubble of bliss as much as possible, but veteran readers know that the job, their coworkers who are also their best friends, and both sides of their extended family continue to wheedle their way in, creating a messy meddling chaos that’s always fun popcorn fodder to consume.
Be reassured that Rain remains the ultimate trouble magnet serving up endless exasperation to all those around him, not the least the bad guys, and Danny has now graduated to official book hubby status as the guy can say, nor do, no wrong. Unf.
Overall, this continues as a great series with plenty of sobering, and at times shocking, violent gruesome deaths along with great romance, humor, and smexy. Toss in Rain and Danny’s attempts at expanding their family of 2, and this really was a comforting read in and amongst murder and mayhem. One can only hope that Harmon will continue to be inspired and we won’t have to wait too long for another of their adventures!
I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Awwwww yeahhhh there it is!!! that's that 5⭐ magic I know and absolutely love!! I'm crying THIS WAS SO FKIN GOOD!!! This was a mega installment and I could not have loved it MORE!!!
I devoured every fantastic sentence, the action, the excitement, the murder board, the ghosties, the humour, the found family, my gawd ALL THE FEELINGS and OFC the hot as FK sex! This was an absolute showstopper and I never wanted this book to end!
That's it!
That's my review!
Perfect right from beginning to end! I mean, The amount of energy in this book was unreal! Dynamic, entertaining, emotional, romantic, sweet and silly, with a propulsive narrative, engaging characterization AND high stakes thrills...my gawd the beat had beat! This book just kept on giving!!
Ahhhhhh I'm just so happy this ended on SUCH a gorgeous high note, and though it was tidy, it was a most wonderful and smushy and well earned HEA for my guys McKenna and Moonbeam!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I love them so much! This was the perfect end to an amazing series, and though I know this was a solid wrap, I welcome any and all future releases with this vibe and especially with cameos from Danny and Rain! Because after 5 books, there still isn't enough of their unrelenting awesomeness out in the world, and I'm ready for another series like this one from Harmon because The Spectral Files was absolute magic, and their shenanigans down at the BBPD be 100% missed!
Probably not the best in the series in terms of the mystery, but it is a true gift to all Rain and Danny fans. The end made me tear up, it’s wonderful to see characters you love, get such a satisfying HEA.
✔️Male victims missing both their heads ✔️Married gay couple ✔️Trademark Rain snark ✔️Ghosts, checking out Danny ✔️Rainstorm’s family ✔️The pool shenanigans ✔️Excellent cast of side characters
Not to be corny or anything, but sometimes I just looked at him like…I found you. How? How the fuck did I manage that? In the wilds of dating and love, I found you.
Aaah you don’t even understand how I SQUEALED when I heard the very first sentences of this last instalment.
I was just giddy with anticipation for this book and with my love for Rain and Danny. It felt SO good to come back to this series and now I’m heartbroken it’s over 😭
This audiobook seriously brought me so much joy. It was the perfect balance of spooky and hilarious - I was laughing out loud and getting chills in equal measure. Rain and I are soulmates when it comes to sarcasm and humour; he just gets me, and I get him.
The case in this one was (imo) much better than in the previous books - less far-fetched and genuinely gripping. I was completely invested in how it all played out and there was one jaw-dropping moment that made me pause the audio and stare for a bit!
And then there’s Danny using little smiley face and star-shaped cutters to make Rain’s lunch more whimsical? Paula’s wedding video?? The incredible supporting cast in the form of their friends and family which quickly became one of my favourite found families ever???
And you BETTER BELIEVE I BAWLED MY EYES OUT at that epilogue 😭😭😭
Jfc, this was such a fantastic, funny, emotional, intriguing, suspenseful, heartwarming conclusion to a truly special series. Oh boy, am I going to miss these guys. I think this might actually be one of my favourite series and one of my fav couples of all time 🥹
PS: Is it too late to hope for a spin-off around my boy Dakota Daylight? Because I NEED IT 😩
We didn't think we'd get another book in this series, with the amazing detective couple Rain and Danny, but wonderfully, we got more. More of this wonderful couple and more of their adventures with ghosts and murders, all wrapped up in one.
The case is front and center in this one. And man is it a doozy, and is gripping from the beginning. If murder mystery isn't your thing (along with some wonderful romance) or you aren't used to how this series/story works by this point, then this isn't the book for you. Otherwise, I say dive right in.
I don't know how many pages this has, as my ARC didn't have the pages in it, just the location. I just knew it was long, but it never felt like that. It had to be well over 300 pages, close to 400 or maybe even more, I don't know, but it went by like that.
Would I have liked more Rain and Danny? Yes, absolutely. My .5 stars off was specifically because of that issue.
What we got of them, I absolutely loved. Seeing them settled into married life, being exceedingly happy together, always having each other's backs, Rain's jealousy, and very hot sexy times - what we got of them, anyway. Everything present with them was wonderful. They are just so head over heels, hopelessly in love with each other and that shines through, no doubt.
But I still craved more. As much as I loved the plot - which, I did. It really does suck you in, and Rain's particular brand of sarcasm and hilarity is enough to keep you heartily engaged - I also want more Danny and Rain, and there wasn't quite the balanced I would have liked.
We only get 2 steamy scenes between these two, in a long book....and I wanted a lot more.
One thing this author has done SO well with these two is writing an established relationship so damn well. Seriously, it's never a dull moment with Danny and Rain. And while their relationship sometimes takes a backseat to the cases - almost like the romance is secondary - it never usually takes this much of a backseat.
I just want a little more heat, a little more interactions, a little closer to a balance between romance and plot that these books usually have. While the plot, the ghosts, etc, always seems to take center stage, these two and their love story is very close behind the main focus. They blend so seamlessly with the overarching plot, usually.
I just didn't quite get that this time around. Not so much that it's worth more than a .5 stars off. I enjoyed this story way too much and it sucked me in for all of it, and I was on the edge of my seat so much, that I still can't give anything in this series below 4.5 stars. I just thought about giving this 4 stars and couldn't do it.
Because despite a little more lack of my favorite couple than usual, what we got was still wonderful, and I gobbled up every one of their interactions, and seeing them get another piece to help them settle into their full HEA.
I just wish we had gotten maybe 2 or 3 more sex scenes....a few more heavy make out seshes here or there....maybe even
BUT....aside from that niggle, the rest of this was amazing.
It really brings up the debate - is it justified to murder abusers?
Rain, ever the straitlaced (when it comes to law, at least) detective, gets challenged on his world view a bit with this. Does he change his mind? No, and I get that. As horrible as a person is, we can't be judge, jury and executioner on our own. It leads to more, like the main culprit seemingly okay with accidentally as well as .
I honestly understand the motivation behind the murders in this one - of the abusers. But when you go too far and kill innocents? Accidentally and not....well, then yeah, you need to be stopped. Also . So yeah, that IS supremely fucked.
But what it started out as...I understand. A lot of the time, abusive situations turn into the (mainly) women (but also men) getting murdered or at the very least, always looking over their shoulder, never safe, never able to live a normal life, always with the threat of harm or worse.
And truly, what do the police do? Restraining orders, to a truly determined bastard, don't do shit. And even if these (usually men, but also women) are caught, how long do they stay in jail? Not long, usually. The system does not work, and it fails the abused like 99% of the time. I truly understand taking matters into your own hands if it is life and death.
But once you cross the line of killing, of murderer...well, how far are you willing to go then? Because it's not so much about the monster you kill, but...but what it does to yourself, and who you might become after taking a life. Even a rotten life. As evidenced in this story.
And I will also get off my soapbox about this very sensitive, serious issue. But that's where I stand on it, and I wasn't entirely on Rain's side. Like yeah, you're a cop, and truly a good one, but...the system you work in is bullshit. It rarely, if ever, actually helps abuse victims.
So yeah, this is a hot topic that this book tackles, but when your main characters are detectives trying "fight the good fight" (that mainly just exist in fiction, lbr), the characters might have biases themselves. Which Rain totally has. But he's also compassionate and empathetic, and feels for the victims as well. And this just isn't as black and white as a lot of murder cases are.
Although I will say, the new character we're introduced to in this, Zach, who is an old friend of Danny's, can get fucked. He
But all that to say, him being around did lead to some funny jealousy moments from Rain. Not that he needed to worry. Danny is as devoted to Rain as Rain is to him, if not more so.
Also, Rain is just so funny all around. Reading his perspective is constantly hilarious and always makes me laugh.
And yes, Danny and Rain are also dealing with the possibility of adoption in this the whole book. Rain, being Rain, isn't quite ready at the start, but he gets there eventually. And when they eventually get to the possibility of adoption, who might become their kid has a little surprise, too. Which I didn't see coming, but which I should have.
This ended pretty perfectly. With a child coming into their lives, this would be a wonderful place to end the series, if the author so chooses.
But she also left it fairly open, as they are just starting the adoption of a child at the end of this. They aren't even , so the author could totally give us another book that would not only give us another ghostly murder case, but also tackle Rain and Danny learning all the ins and outs of parenting.
So either way, I'm happy. I'll always want more from this series, from these two who I absolutely adore. But just like the last book, it ended on a pretty strong HEA, if the author chooses for that to be the end.
I vote for more, of course, as I always want more, but am happy and satisfied if this is the end of their wonderful story.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
All the feels. Every. Single. One. Rain and Danny are one of the best “established” couples out there.
I guess we all thought that their series is over, right? After leaving them in such a good place? Married? And Rain having accepted his abilities? Imagine my pure JOY when I saw that there’s a new book out there. Why I didn’t immediately grab and read it?
Because I waited for the audio.
And waited.
And waited.
For months.
For me, Kirt Graves isn’t just narrating Rain’s pov - he IS Rain, with all the snark, humour and sass. The highly intelligent detective who communicates with ghosts, who loves his hippie family to bits, even when they drive him nuts. Who gets annoyed with “his” ghosts, but misses them when they’re gone.
And who loves Danny. Daniel Christiansen-McKenna, the man with the patience of a saint when it comes to Rain, who loves the ground he’s walking on, and who still continues to challenge him. Danny, the ex Rain gets together with again in book 1, and with whom he has one of the most beautiful relationships I’ve ever read about.
Even with everything that had happened, I could see the reluctant amusement in his eyes. I would always treasure the fact that I could make him laugh. Always. “Why do I put up with you again?” “Because I’m your fucking soulmate, McKenna.” His lips twitched as he tried not to smile. “That’s as good a reason as any, I suppose.”
I want them in my life. I want to know them for real, just be around them, and watch them interact, and know that - yes, soulmates do exist.
That being said, both narration and everything Rain and Danny related get 10 stars out of 5. So good. So good I want to relisten to the entire series now, because I can’t let them go.
Still - the overall rating is “just” 4.5 stars, mainly because the mystery part was a bit obvious. It still kept me at the edge of my seat - it’s an interesting topic after all, seeing as the serial killer is only going after men who abused their women. But it’s a tad obvious, and I couldn’t believe HOW LONG it took them to figure out who the leak in their investigative team is.
Will we get another book? Who knows. There’s potential there, now that Nova entered the equation. I hope we do get more. I’m just not ready to let them go for good 💗
Not to be corny or anything, but sometimes I just looked at him like… I found you. How? How the fuck did I manage that? In the wilds of dating and love, I found you. Sometimes it had felt like digging through a discount bin of scraps, looking for a potential mate—not you, not you, oh dear God, definitely not you. And somehow, I’d come up with not just a potential winner, but The One. Because every time I looked at him, I knew that’s exactly what he was. 🫠
More Rain and Danny. Yes! Another tense ghostly adventure. Yes! And lots of sarcastic humour! Double yes!
I adored seeing Rain and Danny really solid and happy and heading for the next stage in their relationship, even if Rain has serious doubts about fatherhood. I really loved how the author tackles this ‘problem’. And I had an inkling how it would end … which is so fitting and utterly perfect! And in case you’re wondering … these two are still as hot and as mad for each other as ever! Aaand …. Danny’s the most unromantic romantic I’ve ever read! 😂
Strangely (and most unexpectantly!), I also had an idea where the mystery plot was going pretty early on, not that this interfered with my enjoyment of the story in any way. While, for me and my old brain, too many people and names are mentioned throughout the case, I have to applaud the author for making this super tense and exciting. I also liked the extra serving of creepy here.
I might still wonder why Rain hasn’t got a better grip on his gift by now, but I guess that’s a work in progress. Loved Dakota again, btw, and would not mind reading more about him at one point!
As always the merry band of Nick, Kevin and Tab are hilarious, Rain’s parents remain slightly wacky but so full of heart, and Danny’s mum … well, that little development in her life made me grin widely!
This was a fabulous end to this series … but to be honest … if for any reason the author decided to go for more, I’m ALL in!
Is this really the last book in this series?! It sure looks like it is, but how am I ever going to let go of Rain and Danny?! 😭 And because of all those messed up feelings, I could never rate this lower than 5⭐️. And because this is my favourite series ever and I NEVER read paranormal romance.
There is a reason The Spectral Files is one of my favorite series, even while paranormal books are usually not my type of thing. First of all, there is Rain and Danny and they are among my favorite couple ever. Second, there is S.E. Harmon's writing skills. A great mix of humor, wit, snark and suspension. Being in Rain's head always makes me laugh, even when serious business is going on.
That I was looking forward to this book might be an understatement. I have enjoyed every single book in this series, and the day it was announced that this 5th installment was coming, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. And it was so much worth the wait! There are ghosts (of course) and there is a dubious case of a mass murderer, and it's up to Rain to put all the puzzle pieces together. He has finally learned to live with his gift of talking to and seeing ghosts, had finally excepted he can use it to his benefit and he's gotten used to having them around, though boundaries are firmly set. Of course Danny, now his husband, has learned to live with them too. He, and the rest of the investigation team, are lending a hand to solve the murder case, but Rain and the ghosts he communicates with, provide the much needed insights. This book isn't very steamy, but we get a very settled couple instead, and the love Rain and Danny have for one another truly shows.
Of course everything is neatly wrapped up in the end, and that epilogue was everything! It even has me a tiny bit hopeful for another episode, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see. If you haven't read this series yet, and you love having ghosts around and suspense and interesting characters, I can only highly recommend!
I kindly received an arc from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my own, honest opinion.
I can't believe it's over 🥲 I put off reading this for so long because I didn't want it to be over, and now it's over. It's always hard to say goodbye to a beloved book couple, and Danny and Rain are one of my favorites. They've always been funny, sweet, sexy, and stupid in just the right measures, and I'll always love the heck out of them for it 🥹
I'm going to be honest though and admit that while there were things I liked in the last book (like seeing the boys get married), I didn't love the case as much as I would've liked. I had hoped I would connect with the case more this time around, but that didn't happen. For some reason, I felt slightly annoyed for most of the book. I'm not 100% sure why, but I think I just had this sense of everything feeling a bit forced. The side characters I love like Rain's parents and Dakota Daydream simply popped in for perfunctory appearances then peaced out. Even the spice felt like checking off a box to make sure nothing got missed 😩 And let's not forget having Rain end up in mortal danger in the most ridiculous of ways ✅
It's almost as if the entire purpose of the book was to make sure that Danny and Rain got to the end and but I think I would've enjoyed the book more if that were actually a larger part of the story than it ended up being, especially since the case was so meh.
I desperately wanted this series to end on a high note, and I suppose if I focus on the epilogue, it did, but this certainly wasn't a 5* read for me no matter how I slice it 😔 4* is the best I can do, and that pains me greatly. Still, I think 4* is pretty generous when it feels like I'm rating the epilogue. I don't know man, I'm just feeling bummed about it all 😭
Where do I start?! I'm really not sure. This series is one of my absolute favourites. Rain and Danny are one of my most cherished couples, and Rain, especially, he's one of the most iconic protagonists I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I'm so so devastated this will be the last of their adventures, but on the other hand, I was not expecting S.E. Harmon to bless us with it, so I think I'm mainly just so damned happy we got another ride with them.
"A Spooky Legacy" did not disappoint, at all. It's entertaining and gripping, packed with mysteries, murders (and ghosts!), but it's also sweet and romantic and so damned heartfelt that I thought I was going to end up sobbing once or twice (no, I'm kidding; at least a dozen times). Rain was the same Rain I remembered, snarky and neurotic and full of contradictions, a walking, talking murder magnet, but he's also slowly becoming the better version of himself. I love a good 'ol character arc, and his in particular was absolutely unforgettable. He's one of the best characters out there, and I'm already looking forward to re-reading these books from the start.
I also love a romance that manages to still feel as thrilling, as toe-curling, as when the love interests first get together; but I especially love it when said romance also manages to grow and flourish and become even better, even sweeter, even more satisfying. Rain and Danny have both been put through the wringer in this series, but their love has always come out stronger and better; and in this one, they're more in love than ever. They fight and grapple with insecurities and misunderstandings, but they know they can count on one another, and that theirs is a soulmate kind of love. I'm so damned happy with how thier second-chance romance turned out: it's been a rollercoaster ride of emotions, steam and love, and I'm so satisfied with their HEA.
The mystery here was absolutely gripping: it's dark and painful and complex and haunting, and those last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat the whole damn time. I love this series because while there's a paranormal edge to it, the mystery and the romance are both pretty much the heart of all the stories the author has weaved together here. The ghosts were pretty much entertaining though; and that final twist? Talk about fate. I loved the mystery, and I adored all the side characters: from Rain's parents to Dakota and all of Rain and Danny's co-workers. I loved the writing; S.E. Harmon is SUCH a gifted writer, and the way humour is perfectly blended in with the angst and the heartfelt? Absolutely wonderful.
I'm so not ready to say goodbye to Rain; but I'm already excited to start a re-read as soon as I can manage. I read those first books quite a few years back (and another thing I appreciate about S.E. Harmon, is the fact that she's a master at not making a reader feel lost, even when they've forgotten quite a few plot elements and characters), and I'm so looking forward to re-discovering these books again.
In the meantime: if you love mysteries with a smidge of paranormal, second-chance romances that take the bitter animosity and transform it into soulmate love, wonderful character arcs and a MCs who's as snarky as he is unlucky, go and read this series. It's a MUST for all fans of the genre.
Rain and Danny are two of my all-time favourite fictional detectives and this wraps up their cases with a real doozy that definitely pushes all the boundaries.
I loved that Rain stood by his convictions completely though and saw things through, even when things looked pretty bleak
With Rain struggling to get his thoughts in order about their journey towards adoption, the case brings him even more things to worry about with a missing family that includes two kids.
Not gonna lie, this one definitely had all the creepy factor, but was coupled with a lot of morally grey, in one way, crimes that you could argue a justification for if you were so inclined.
I'm really sad to see the end to the Spectral Files, but it finished on a high.
While I feel like this series could have left off with book 4, I'm guessing either the author or the readers were dead set on Not much was added to the series except the spoilery aspect I mentioned above, so it was kind of a let down that more wasn't explained about Rain's powers, or that we didn't get to see them in use more. And the ley lines - nothing new added there, either.
I enjoy Danny and Rain as a couple, so I don't regret reading this, but I have to say that my hopes were kind of high, seeing as this is supposed to be the last book in the series according to some. Hopes weren't really met for more world-building, but eh.
ETA: Damn, it really took me 4 whole days to read this, lol
I'm completely with Snjez on this one: wonderful to be back with my favorite snarky spook. Didn't even expect there to be another book in this series but it was a surprise I quite enjoyed.
Have to re-read the first book sometime to check if Rain was such a sarcastic guy from the start. Thankfully he's always getting his act together so the sarcasm is more a charming quirk than an annoying attitude. Must be his inner Pisces shining through ;) Anyway, he's not the only quirky character and it was his interaction with them, may them be part of his team, his family or in this part of the series even the ghosts, what made this book such a pleasant read for me. What is even more of a surprise how Harmon was able to combine this almost wholesome and charming situation and the seriousness of the mystery without creating a rift in the story flow. I appreciated how Rain stood out for the law while acknowledging its feebleness in the current case and that even before the story was showing what a slippery slope self-justice turns out to be.
Although in big parts this book feels like The Spectral Files came now to a perfect end, the epilogue gives me a bit of hope that the story might not be told completely. Also there's hopefully still the option of a Dakota spin-off
Enjoyed this one but I would have liked a bit more of the relationship so it balanced out the amount of content about the crime. That said I really liked how everything interlinked, but there were definitely quite a few loose ends.
Rain taking care of Ryan was so sad, yet I loved seeing that paternal side of him. I also loved that there wasn't drama about the ex and that you could count on Danny and Rain's relationship being solid - very refreshing. But my absolute favourite part was the ending with Nova 😍
I need to see these two as parents, I need to see Danny figure out what's going on with Paula, and I really need at least one book about Dakota Daydream!!
A Spooky legacy was such a nice surprise. I loved being back with Rain and Danny. Their banter and snark had me laughing, but there were some tender moments too. Rain and Danny have certainly come a long way in their relationship.
So the story itself was quite original. In fact, the story could have been a Criminal Minds episode. Although I figured out who the serial killer was, it did have me guessing a few times.
I’m hoping this isn’t the last book for Rain and Danny, I’m just not ready to say goodbye yet.
Loved: * Rain and Danny, who are still one of the best mm couples out there. Their love and devotion to each other shines through the entire series, and this book wasn't an exception. * Rain's narration: funny and sarcastic that never fails to make me smile. * The balance between ghost and non-ghost parts, I loved seeing Rain in peace with the spooky part of his life. * The complex mystery and the not so straightforward victims and villains. But at the end of the day, I'm on Rain's side. The system is not perfect, but taking justice in your own hands eventually turns you into the same evil you try to fight. When you don't hesitate to kill innocent people to protect your just project, you need to be stopped. * An excellent ensemble of multidimensional secondary characters that are an integral part of the series. * The epilogue - absolutely epic and so fitting
Perfect ending to a perfect series! I absolutely loved the high octane high drama finish to the murder mystery! I also fell in love with the family-centric last two chapters! Five star book, five star series! Highly recommended!
This series is one of my top favorites and this book was just perfection! Rain has come so far in his personal life, professional life and supernatural life. This was a tough case that ended with a thrilling chase that was also so creepy.
The family and friends in this series are beyond wonderful! I love every single one of Rain & Danny’s inner circle. And Danny, he makes me melt! What a beautiful character who is so special. Rain is funny and witty and sarcastic and I love him. The ending gives me so much hope for their future. I teared up and I already knew what happens.
This series is my favorite by Harmon. I’d love more, even a short story one day of these guys are handling life and fatherhood. ___________________________________________________
Perfection! I just adore this series and this book was everything. Rain and Danny are swoon worthy, the secondary characters are hilarious but so supportive. The mystery was intriguing and creepy as heck. The ending made my heart melt. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.
700 stars for Rain and Danny!!! God I love them so much. This author absolutely nails the long-term love of two people who really are meant to be together. I have tears in my eyes thinking about them.
I did have some personal issues with the book. While the mystery was interesting and well done, I just have to roll my eyes at victims of domestic abuse being the bad guys. And like…was Evie really 100% wrong?? Lol. In today’s political climate (and every day’s, really), it was difficult to read this plot. There also was barely any focus on how the law really doesn’t protect these women.
I also really missed a heavy paranormal plot. There wasn’t much going on with ghosts here compared to previous books and I really missed it.
Lastly, I still really don’t think Rain and Danny should’ve became parents. However, the way it was done was literally the best way it could’ve possibly happened. I’m so glad they didn’t do in vitro given Danny’s history, and I’m so glad they adopted a kid who can also see ghosts. I would actually legitimately read more books with them and the kid because it would likely be more of a parenting a kid who sees ghosts rather than just boring parenting stuff. I’d still be annoyed though, because to me it feels really forced 😂 I also disagreed with Rain’s mom’s perspective on being ready for parenthood.
So much love for Danny and Rain and god I hope we get more. This was such an absolute treat after thinking the series was done!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
After marriage comes.. murders? Rain is content with his new married life with cold case detective and long time love Danny. However, he's not so sure about the 'next step', as in, having kids. After a thankful ghost gifts him two bodies puzzle-shaped, Rain tries really hard to make the ‘kid’ situation take a backseat. Needless to say, it doesn't work.
This felt really comfortable, and nothing out of what I expected from the series and the author. One thing got me, though. The repetitions, like "“Nate and Quinn realized that once the perpetrator realized she was still alive, " and "Guess life had other plans. According to Rhonda, she’d been blindsided by his abandonment. She knew he’d been seeing someone, and hoped she could convince him to go to therapy. But life had other plans." AND "We’d alerted the guards to stay alert, . I think I DNF'ed a book because of it a few days ago, it just grates me so much.
Also, the author did a better job with incorporating the ghosts in the story this time. Except for Franklin. where did Franklin go? He was last mentioned helping Rain and just, we don't have a resolution? Will he show up on the next (I'm already counting on the next, author!! I NEED Nova helping them!!)?
Now, to what more I liked. The banter, always so good. The epilogue was really cute, I'm already sold on the next book being more about the trials and tribulations of having a kid. The focus on the mystery was fun, and although it frustrated me some times, it was enjoyable overall.
Gah! I was so excited to get this unexpected instalment of Rain and Danny.
Was Rain always such a smartass? 🤣🤣🤣
Its been a while since I read this series but I just wallowed in every gloried in every sarcastic comment and thought that he emanated.
There was so much to love here. Just being back in Rain and Danny's world, seeing them so happy and the underlying mystery of this book was a delight. Why are there less ghosts in Danny's world? who murdered that family? Will Rain and Danny go through with their plans or will Rain chicken out?
Oh. My. Gosh. This book—this series—is perfection. The character development and the thrilling plots just make you happy to be alive. Sometimes I just had to set my kindle aside so I could appreciate and respect particular prose or banter. Series with same couples are my jam. I prefer to read and write them. The Spectral Files series is a giant, pulsing exclamation mark for why. The connection you feel between Rain and Danny, and the bond you form with them, is pure joy. These guys feel so real, and I adore them. And the camaraderie between them and their team is everything. The ending is chef’s kiss. I won’t say more because I am not spoiling a single moment of this book for a future reader. I just hope there are more books to come.
Hmmm, I rushed through this & have time separating this book from the rest of this wonderful series. I should have read-listened to the previous books to be ready for this one. Ahhh, challenge regrets…
Another delightful addition to this series! The ghosts, the murders, the amazing secondary characters, and of course our two favourite detectives, Rain and Danny! ❤️❤️❤️
