I finished this tiny tale a few weeks ago, but labored over how to rate and review it. On the one hand - I didn't like any of the characters. I mean, who would? I didn't enjoy the violence, references to gore, or the almost white-washed depiction of brutality. The sex? Violent, gory, brutal and also somewhat white-washed.

The rating then? Beats me. All I can say is that on the other hand, I keep thinking about this tiny nugget of a messed up story and I do wonder what happens in the equally tiny book 2.

I think the haunting occurs due to the treatment of the middle of the story. It's almost blank. There's such a strong character build in the beginning - I could sense everything that Skye experienced and thought so vividly. I felt I knew where the tale was going as far as the character arc. Then just when I think things are going to take a horror/slasher movie turn, I'm left hanging. Sort of.

At first, the starkness to the middle was irritating to me. I kept thinking this was a cop-out and a way to avoid being banned or busted by the literary crappers. Not that I wanted to read what I knew was going to happen, but I had expectations, ya know? This book is so short, but I stopped reading at the moment I thought it was going to take a turn into horrorville. I paused in order to give myself a girding-loins moment. Turns out, I didn't need to.

If the depiction of the systematic breaking of Skye in the middle had been presented as vividly as the build-up in the beginning or the shocking ending, I don't think this story would have had as much impact for me. I would have easily DNF'd and looked the other way. As it is, the treatment of the conditioning of Skye gave some breathing room to this horrific tiny gem packed with horrifying characters.

Will I read book 2? Most likely. This was a cliffhanger and I have a feeling that some interesting things will happen in the next book. And I'm trusting Penfist to not lead me into a dark alley without leaving a little breathing room.

I must say that when I first read the warning, I was scared to go on. So I closed it. Moments later, I told myself to stop being such a pussy and just get through the first paragraph. I was hooked as soon as Skye saw Number Four in the bar. I couldn't put it down, even as fear gripped me for the life of this woman who only exists in our imaginations. So well written, but not too descriptive as to horrify you into putting it down. The emotions you feel as you take this journey with these people and now I want to know all of their stories... Number Three especially. I can't wait for the next installment and as dark as this may be there is a twinge of romance that you want to see what happens if they all reunite somehow... and what happens then?

This book, although exeedingly dark, was also very compulsive reading. A gritty and gripping story that pulls you in and you have to see where it will lead. The violent, BDSM is not for everyone though.

Not everyone's cup of tea but I found it compelling enough that I need to read the next in this series.

Strangely I began to connect with the two main characters in the book. Definitely not for the faint of heart. But then I am not so I enjoyed this.

This is a short, intense read, almost as much a thriller as it is legitimate erotica. The author says as much in his intro. The prose is clean, the story inventing and the ending unexpected. I haven't been caught off guard by erotica in a long time, but I am quite anxious to see what happens next.

Physically intense BDSM, not for those with triggers or preconceived notions, but I was refreshed. Must create a proper modern erotica shelf for this book.

Wow...she goes thru alot but as you read there is something playing in the back of my mind that there is more to this then meets the eye. I want more of Four(the leader and the one who F**ks with her mind)then one who like electrcity, one that likes to beat up his partner and not no slap ot spaking I mean fists..and a sadist, but if you ask me they are all sadist....Interesting read. It's a little rough so read the warning.I'm off to read #2

Since I wrote this book, I love it. Is that biased? Yes, probably. Not a book for the faint of heart, and the pace is quick. The second installment brings some new depth to the characters.

Disturbing. Very. Shows an unbiased understanding of the themes in the book. Question is, what happens next?
