The Underworld Duet #2

Consort of the Crime Queen

Rate this book
The queen of Chicago's criminal underworld, Hadria "Hades" Imperioli, is no stranger to power and danger.

When she set Aurora Verderosa free, Hadria thought she was doing the right thing—for once in her life.

But now the only light in her dark world has been ripped from her, and Hadria faces a vulnerability she never knew.

As Hadria frantically searches the city's underbelly to save her lover, the Syndicate she leads becomes fractured, with some questioning her right to lead.

Hadria is forced to confront the idea that saving Aurora might mean giving up her criminal kingdom. But the crime queen is determined to reclaim her love—whatever it takes.

Can Hadria save Aurora and claim her forever?

Or will the darkness she revels in overtake her at last and destroy any chance at love?

Consort of the Crime Queen is the thrilling conclusion to the Underworld Duet, a steamy contemporary Sapphic mafia romance based (very) loosely on the myth of Hades and Persephone. Reader discretion is advised, and content notes are available on the Copyright page.

Fascinating read!
This book #2 is both entertaining and an exciting plotline in 'The Underworld Duet' ongoing chronicle. Enticing cliffhanger.
A much recommended book and series!

I am reviewing both novels in this “duet” as one piece because that’s how I read them and I’m sure that’s how its intended. It wouldn’t change my rating either way so….

These were enjoyable novels that were fun to read, although they were not groundbreaking and I don’t think it will leave much of an impact for me. That sounds harsher than I mean it, it’s just that these were an enjoyable read but not much more. I liked the overall story and the dynamic between the protagonists. There was enough plot to keep me engaged and I definitely started reading the second book immediately after finishing the first, which is a great sign. If you like mafia stuff or captivity romance, then you will likely enjoy these novels a lot. Otherwise, I would say they are good but they wouldn’t be the first thing I would recommend.

The first novel has a lot of slow-build going on, and I think I enjoyed it more than the second. There was a lot more relationship development and playing around with the overall premise. I enjoyed seeing the slow change in the protagonist’s situation, emotions, and plans. The author used the captive angle well, although I could have used more “something” to help build the relationship between the protagonists. The second book has the majority of the spicy content, which is well written, but definitely made the novel feel like it was stretched out longer than it needed to be.

This novel had some typos/mistakes. Not a ton, but every one I found seemed to be related to important details that made the reading experience a bit confusing (not horrible, it was easy to figure things out). Considering how jarring these mistakes were, I am very surprised they made it into the final version of the novel.

One last note; these novels were supposed to be a duet however they ended with a fairly big cliffhanger. I don’t like that! There was also no indication within the novel as to what I should be reading to find out what happens next, which was a little annoying.

What a ride! So, book 2 has more or less nothing to do with the mythology. This one is pure badassery, blood, gore and lust. The point is, I enjoyed reading this mafia story. Finally! A woman heading the underworld. The Godfather was good, yeah, but zero female rep that is minutely empowering. Anyway, it was an entertaining good read! I’m gonna have to hunt down the rest of the author’s book now.

I enjoyed this one—maybe not as much as the first book, but it still kept me hooked. That said, it really felt like the conflict here could’ve just been the third act of book one. Instead, it’s stretched out to fill a full novel, which made the pacing feel a bit dragged in places.

There were a few editing errors here and there, but nothing major that took away from the story. What did trip me up a bit was the ending. I’m a little confused—this series is marketed as a duet, but book two ends on a cliffhanger? If this is truly the final book, the ending feels pretty unsatisfying.

Still, the story itself was compelling, and I’m curious to see if there’s more coming.

we all know i hated aurora from the first book, and this book didn’t change that 🙃

there’s not much to really say ab this book honestly. like there continues to be grammatical errors throughout the book, but thankfully it was a lot better than the first book imo. also the storyline of them being in this mafia/gang thing is not really realistic…bc they don’t act like one would if they were in that type of group. other than the killings fr, but even that is stretching it fr.

Consort of the Crime Queen is a pulse-pounding conclusion to an addictive duet, packed with just the right blend of darkness, romance, and high-stakes action. If Captive of the Crime Queen set the stage, this installment ignited it in flames.

Hadria continues to dazzle as the ultimate mafia villainess—fiercely possessive and vulnerable in ways that made her even more captivating. Seeing her fight tooth and nail to reclaim Aurora showcased an intense depth to her character that I absolutely adored. Aurora's growth remained a highlight; her strength deepened beautifully without ever sacrificing her heart.

The chemistry between Hadria and Aurora intensified dramatically, and the spicy scenes were even hotter this time around. Paige Reisenfeld and Aleksi Graves continued to blow me away with their narration, expertly capturing the emotional highs and lows, and breathing vivid life into every moment.

I loved how the retelling elements of the Hades and Persephone myth evolved seamlessly within the gritty mafia setting, adding extra layers to the suspense and romance. This duet absolutely solidified me as a fan of Persephone Black—I can’t wait to see what's next from her.

If you're craving deliciously dark sapphic romance with powerful, morally grey heroines, look no further. This finale hits all the right notes.

This was a great ending to the duet! I love this pairing. This book was packed with a lot more action than book one. And also more spice! Love it. Highly recommend Persephone’s books.

Written in first person with 2x POV’s. Book Two in the Underworld Duet. Dark Sapphic Mafia, Revenge, Rich Girl/Poor Girl, Ice Queen, Grumpy x Sunshine. Paige Reisenfeld & Aleksi Graves. 5x Spicy Scenes.

It was okay. This really should’ve just been a third act conflict of book 1. But it felt dragged on for the sake of filling a book worth’s of pages.

Nice. Good stuff indeed. That epilogue better be the start of Lyssa's story because... it seems intriguing but I am most definitely hope it is not like "A Dangerous Prize" storyline. STILETTO, who are you?

(I LOVE LYSSA)
I liked the first one better but I still enjoyed this, I also don't have a lot to say but what I do have is quotes :p

"What made me think she would choose me over the freedom I gifted her?"

"In that case, I will make every effort. I don't like to see innocents taken advantage of by those who live with violence and cruelty. I must tell you, though if I find her, and she does not wish to be returned to you. Well, this budding friendship between us might be over before it starts"
..."Aurora will wish to return. I have no doubt of that" ... "What if Aurora really doesn't want to return"

"I could have killed Nero, you know. I had him at my mercy" ... "No. I was too weak"
"Thank God. Don't ever change, Aurora. Not for me, not for anyone"

"...but I'm still changing. Still forming. Still finding my own identity in this world of Elysium. And there is no going back now to what I once was"

"I understand, thank you for wanting to protect me from that. But let me decide what stains my soul. Please. Freedom isn't just about going wherever I want. It's also about making my own choices, my own decisions"
... "For once in my life, I feel like I've been truly heard"

"That loyalty comes from love. And love requires trust"

(This is not necessary but I needed to)
"I'll buy you a thousand pretty panties to wear, just so I can rip them off you before I fuck you"

"Not everyone who smiles at you is thinking happy thoughts. Just some friendly advice"

"Why on earth would I want to lead such a corrupt, honorless Family when I have my own people who would die for me? People who respect me not because of my name, but because I earned their loyalty"

(This is not necessary but I needed to part 2)
"You like being watched, don't you? You like knowing that everyone out there might be looking at you, seeing you like this getting finger fucked by Hadria Imperioli, the fucking queen of Chicago"

WHAT ABOUT THE END? NO? WHY?

Badass Female Main Characters!

Slightly different than book 1, in a good way. More badass fighting. More steaming hot scenes befitting the story. Both MCs showed growth and in that growth a higher strength in themselves and each other.

Left with a bit of a cliffhanger…is Lyssa getting a story and a hea maybe?! One can hope! Since this is a duology and the ending definitely pertains to this storyline/characters, it would make sense. There are character cameos from the Bianchi family and possibly from the Ruby realm as well. (I haven’t read that duology yet).

Definitely worth the read and I suggest reading them back to back!

Quick, enjoyable read with amusing plot and sapphic spicy goodness. 🔥

Aurora was a little boring but I still liked her character development, she grew a lot from book 1. As did Hadria! Pacing was generally great. Spice was good and it didn’t feel like it was shoehorned in.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised, and I’m excited to read more from this author.

(Might go into more detail and flesh the review out a bit more after I’ve slept 😅)

I liked this even more than the first book! It picks up right where the first one left off, with Aurora once again held captive, but this time by someone else. I really enjoyed seeing Hades’ character development, transforming from a heartless mafia boss into someone more vulnerable, even changing the way she rules. The chemistry between Aurora and Hades was fantastic, and the spicy chapters were so good!

In this sequel to the first book, Aurora has been captured and Hadria is trying to figure out how to get her back. But Aurora manages to escape and return to Hadria, who is now plotting to kill her brother at the same time that she's being challenged by members of her own syndicate.

This is a kind of unevenly paced book, with sex scenes inserted in the middle and little action until the last 30% or so. The opening is strong but I wish the plotting had been more even.

And it seems we're going to get a third book in this series, or maybe one that connects all of the book duets written by this author since the book ends with one mystery unsolved.

Sequels are a tricky business. They have to deliver on the promises of the first book while raising the stakes, deepening the characters, and keeping the reader hooked with fresh conflicts. Consort of the Crime Queen certainly tries to do all that, but while it offers drama, betrayal, and action, it stumbles where it should have soared.

Let’s break it down.

The Queen Who… Steps Back Instead of Up?
We left Captive of the Crime Queen on a dramatic, heart-wrenching note: Hadria “Hades” Imperioli, ruthless leader of the Styx Syndicate, had let Aurora go, believing she was making the right choice. But love doesn’t just fade, and the moment Aurora is kidnapped by Hadria’s father (because apparently, this family really doesn’t believe in not trafficking women), Hadria snaps into action. Or… at least, she’s supposed to.

Here’s where things get a little frustrating.

Hadria is introduced in book one as an untouchable, commanding figure—an ice queen who rules through fear, strength, and power. She’s not just a mafia boss; she’s the mafia boss, the kind of woman who makes hardened criminals kneel and sends enemies to early graves without blinking.

So why, then, does she spend most of Consort of the Crime Queen being softer than a marshmallow left out in the rain?

Aurora gets taken, and instead of launching into a brutal, merciless rescue mission, Hadria searches for her. I mean, yes, searching is part of the job, but come on. This is Hadria Imperioli. The woman should have razed the entire city to the ground within hours. Instead, it feels like she’s… waiting. Hoping. Feeling.

And then?

Aurora escapes on her own.
That’s right. Aurora—once the innocent, delicate flower of the first book—manages to save herself before Hadria even gets to her. While I love seeing character growth and strength in Aurora, this moment completely undercuts Hadria’s presence in the story. She becomes reactive instead of dominant, watching events unfold rather than controlling them.

Where’s the Fearsome Syndicate?
Let’s talk about the Styx Syndicate, the mercenary organization that’s supposed to be made up of the most elite, battle-hardened killers in the city. They should be an unstoppable force, right? Unflinching, disciplined, terrifying?

Apparently not.

When Nero Imperioli and his allies invade Elysium, Hadria’s supposedly fearsome men hide in the war room. Yes, you read that right. They hide. Instead of mounting a relentless counterattack, instead of reminding everyone why the Syndicate is feared, they’re cowering, waiting to be overrun.

Come on. These are the same people who were once terrorizing Chicago? The same ruthless warriors who supposedly answer to no one but Hadria? The book needed a moment where the Syndicate reminded everyone—including Nero—why they were untouchable. Instead, they felt like a weak, disorganized group that folded the moment pressure was applied.

Hadria: Ice Queen or Just… Soft?
I’m all for character development, but when you call someone an ice queen, they better be an ice queen—or at least show a believable transformation into something softer. The issue here is that Hadria seems to have lost her edge without any real turning point. She’s not hardened and ruthless like in the first book, nor is she making a compelling choice to change. She’s just… there. Passive. Hurt. Unsure. Injured too easily in the final battle. Where’s the woman who commanded the entire underworld with a look? If she’s changing, we need something to make it feel earned—some grand realization, some deep emotional moment where she chooses to let her guard down for Aurora. Instead, it just kind of happens, and not in a satisfying way.

The Romance: Still There, But Missing Some Fire
Despite my frustrations with Hadria’s character arc, the romance between her and Aurora remains engaging. There’s undeniable chemistry, and I appreciate the way Aurora grows into her own strength. She’s no longer just reacting to Hadria—she’s making her own choices, standing her ground, proving that she’s not just a prize to be won.

However, I wish the book leaned harder into the tension. We needed more emotional push-and-pull between them, more conflict born from their drastically different worlds. There were moments where it felt like their romance was coasting rather than crackling with the intensity I wanted. Also, the spicy scenes? Fine, but once again, I hoped for more. This is a mafia romance with a powerful captor/captive dynamic at its core—there was so much room for bold, thrilling, seductive moments, and instead, the book played it a little too safe.

The Ending: Rebuild, Propose, Cliffhanger
The book wraps up with Hadria and Aurora beginning the process of rebuilding Elysium, which is satisfying in its own way. Hadria proposes, which is a nice touch, but there’s still so much unresolved. The person responsible for murdering Hadria’s men? Still unknown. The looming threat of the Bianchi family? Still lurking. And Hadria’s enemies? Still very much alive.

I have to admit, I’m feeling a little hesitant about this becoming a full-blown series. At first, I thought it would be a neat, two-book saga, but now, it seems like there’s more to come. That’s not necessarily a bad thing—if done right, a third book could redeem the inconsistencies in this one—but it needs to bring back the fire, the danger, and the sheer dominance of Hadria Imperioli that made book one such a standout.

Final Thoughts
Consort of the Crime Queen is an entertaining read, packed with drama, betrayal, and action, but it doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of its predecessor. Hadria, once the untouchable queen of the underworld, feels oddly subdued, and the Syndicate—supposedly a terrifying force—fails to live up to its reputation. Aurora, on the other hand, shines in her own way, proving that she’s not just a damsel in distress, but her solo escape highlights how little Hadria actually does in the grand scheme of things.

While the romance is still engaging and the tension remains, the book ultimately feels stretched—as if it was trying too hard to justify a sequel rather than delivering a natural continuation of the story.

I thought…

The first book in the series was good, I was surprised to see the second one on par with the first. I just couldn’t get enough of Hadrias and Aurora.

There were times reading where I wanted to kill Aurora and Hadrias myself. But loving them at the same time. The love that unfurled between them was so rich and magnificent. I wanted Aurora to “get it” that she had to take more thought for her life as it is and at the same time, I wanted her to challenge anyone that tried to control her. There were times that I wanted Hadrias to bend a little, to be vulnerable, but at the same time, I know the danger in it. This life keeps you forever on your toes. This life is what those in power live daily like the mafias, the politicians, the police, the gangs, very wealthy people and very old money all live in this world. It is one unknown to the masses. But with this life comes power and insane amounts of money. And most of the serious crimes are committed by these syndicates.

I watched Hadrias change to soften where it is most important to achieve more but yet hold onto those around her. I watched Aurora change to never let anyone just make decisions for her. She showed strength, valor and bravery whereas she was underestimated and to her advantage when she needed it most.

Nero and their father Zepp/Don Imperioli are what’s wrong with these families. Women aren’t seen as useful. But it’s a hell of life to have your azz keep being handed to you by your overlooked and put down upon daughter at every turn. It’s a shame that this family had to be ripped apart in the way it was. But the men brought it upon themselves. It is what it is.

I do think that Hadrias made a mistake. She should have taken the head of the snake when she had the chance. Also, I’m nervous about the Bianchi family. But I am a bit remiss to say too much about that because that family is ran by a woman. I am sure that she had to go through so many of the same things that Hadrias had to go through. I am not as sure as putting what was happening big to the Syndicate members at their feet.

This book was left on a huge cliffhanger since no one lived to be questioned about what was happening to those of the Syndicate. I hope the next book comes out soon. I thought two books were it, not a chance.

So, originally I wasn’t too much of a fan after the first book—but the cliffhanger shoved me right into the second installment, which is a hard-won victory for the author. I can’t lie if I wanted to, I devoured this book and licked the fork clean.

While I found Hadria hard to like in Captive, Consort changed my thoughts completely. She was charming, and endearingly pathetic as she grappled with her character development, a stark contrast to the stubborn, violent character we started with. Aurora was still complex, still running in circles and proving time and time again she was not meant for this life—but that’s kind of the point isn’t it? We aren’t always dealt a winning-hand, and for Aurora, she has no choice but to finish the game with all her chips in the pot.

The age-gap was hard to digest before, but now we see how Hadria and Aurora’s differences shape each other—Hadria having grown up desperately surviving and breaking herself into pieces to build her syndicate with, and Aurora chained down with a price-tag from birth, forced to make light of all the abuse and disservice. They balance each other out; Aurora teaching Hadria that love isn’t always meant to hurt, and Hadria giving Aurora the strength to escape the burning house she was born into by her own power and will.

This book was a smoothie of action, angst, tension, love, and tenderness. The war finally commences once Hadria realizes all she has to lose, and what little she has to win. The stakes were high for both characters, but both only feared for the other, which I found a redeeming quality and really, really charming.

Obviously, there are some technical issues. A bit too many adverbs, and the pacing was fast, but I still tore each page up like it’d be my last. Will be looking into more by this author!

FAVORITE QUOTE/QUOTES
.I look up at her, wonderstruck. "You came back," I whisper. Aurora's luminous gaze doesn't waver, though her eyes are a little watery. "I'll always come back to you."

."When I asked Lyssa to train you, all I meant was for you to be able to defend yourself. I don't want to destroy that light inside you, Sunshine."..."I never wanted this darkness to stain you like it has. Protecting you, Aurora, that's all I care about now."

MY THOUGHTS
The cliffhanger in the last book was intense, and this one picks up exactly where it left off. It couldn’t have been written any better. I flew through it...I couldn’t have stopped even if I wanted to. I was completely drawn into Hades and Aurora’s story. The writing is magnificent; Persephone captures every emotion and action so vividly that I could both see and feel every moment. And the spicy scenes? Absolutely phenomenal, nothing was left out.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I adored their devotion to each other. Hades, as the leader of the syndicate, is always composed and in control but seeing her lose her mind over Aurora’s safety, willing to risk everything to protect her, was incredible.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK
The dynamic of Aurora being Hades’s ultimate weakness never got old. Watching Hades literally brought to her knees over a girl? Yes, please. I would happily order 200 more stories like this.

WHAT I WISHED FOR
Not a single thing. This book was perfect.

i loooooooved Hadria and Aurora, their journey was chefs kiss. the character development between both characters was amazing. Hadria is very stubborn but Aurora made her change for the better, not only for her and her people-but also herself. she really let her walls down and let Aurora in completely and it was beautiful to see. Aurora was someone who never stood up for herself and Hadria really brought out this badass confidence in Aurora. not only confident but she was also hardworking & set goals for herself, like training everyday to be able to protect herself and the people she loved. they were perfect for each other. and they were seeexxxyyyyy🔥🔥🔥
