This is a great book under the guise of a travelog. The author shares much of his personal insight about the world as he sees it through his time hiking a little known, remote island in Michigan. It is at times raw and unfiltered, authentic and unpretentious; you get to learn and laugh with him along the way. I knew the title was "failing" but I still felt hopeful throughout that he would make it through his ambitious hiking plans. Maybe he still will. We should all be so reflective and honest... and even more brave to put ourselves out there as he does.
From the cover you would think this is a book about Isle Royale and while it takes place there this is more than that. This is a journal of a man who is trying to find his next phase in life. Trying to become a better human that he was before. You will also find that every thought he had while on the island is written down.
Interesting read. Not what I expected. I did enjoy being able to follow him along his hikes and visualizing where he was on Isle Royale.
