Burned by love, Mackenzie spurns romance. But when trapped in time amid the midnight masquerade, the modern woman finds herself drawn to a diabolic son of a duke!
When she stumbles on a priceless antique mask, Mackenzie is propelled through time into Regency England. Mistaken for someone else, she finds the enigmatic guest at Waverly Court intensely intriguing – but when he mistakes her for his fiancée, Mickie finds herself the target of his loathing.
Sebastien Ferrer Wellington is the illegitimate son of a famous Duke. He tolerates his position at the edge of Regency society…barely. One moment he despises his arranged engagement to a vapid flitterdigibbet of a fiancée, but the next he could swear she’s a different person – witty, wise, and ever so enticing.
Sebastien planned to humiliate his fiancée while taking what’s his, ruining her then breaking their engagement. But after doing the dastardly deed, he deeply desires to have her as his own.
Amid the twists of time, Sebastian's betrayal may cost Mickie everything....

I found this book very disjointed felt it didn't flow nicely. I did read the prequel, and think they could be combined. If the beginning was edited down I think the story would've been more engaging.
Thank you, NetGalley, BooksGoSocial, and Audra Hershey, for sending this eARC for review. All opinions are my own.
The beginning...was confusing and scattered. I had to keep reading paragraphs over and over trying to parse out what was happening. I honestly feel like I could've skipped multiple chapters in the beginning and not have suffered for it at all.
When the MMC is finally introduced...he's extremely unlikable. But then again, there's not a single character I liked in this book. I started liking the FMC towards the end when she tells off the MMC and another character...but then she immediately caves and forgives the MMC for being horrible. Also the way the author writes about women in particular is straight up hateful at times.
Overall, definitely not my style, not my kind of book.

I'm always up for a good time travel romance so of course I grabbed this!!
Mickie has been burned by love so she swears off of love! However, she finds herself thrown back in time amid the midnight masquerade. She is mistaken for Sebastien's fiancée and is the target of his loathing. Sebastien is the illegitimate son of a famous duke and he tolerates his position at the edge of society. He despises his arranged engagement but now....she seems different. He had planned to humiliate her but after doing the dastardly deed, he deeply desires to haver her as his own.
Soooooooooooooooooo I wanted to like this so much, but damn Sebastien was a total asshat. I get it....his original fiancée was not great and vapid but man....he's not nice.
I also really hated spending so much time on his dalliance with Caroline. UGH. I feel like we spent more time with them in bed then his "soul mate" Mickie. *rolls eyes* Meh.
Poor Mickie...I cheered when she FINALLY stood up for herself near the end there. GOOD. Screw Sebastien and Caroline. They deserve each other. I'm made she caved so easily when he came begging (not a spoiler - you know he would).
NOOOW the ending was very sweet and I adored the epilogue. That was the best part of the book. It was so nice seeing them ACTUALLY together and being in love and him not being an asshat.
All-in-all, there are some parts I really liked like the epilogue. So sweet. However, Sebastien didn't deserve Mickie 95% of the book. The last tine chunk he had a complete turn-around....but dang it was hard to even like him. I'll give this 2 stars.
I really struggled with this book. I had to stop reading and read the prequel called Betrayal in the Ballroom to try and make sense of the story. Reading the prequel helped understand the characters and this story. The main female character Mackenzie (Mickie) Brennan is transported back in time after touching a mask while working as a costume designer. She doesn’t seem particularly worried about where she is, when she is or how she can get back. She manages to wing her way through most of her time there as she is a doppelgänger of the fiancée of the main male character, Sebastian Ferrer Wellington. He doesn’t seem to notice that she isn’t his fiancée accept he is attracted to her like he never has been. His original fiancée just happened to leave as Mickie arrives from the future. None of the secondary characters had any redeeming qualities and flitted in and out of the plot. The story has steamy scenes in it and the story was ok to read but lacked any real substance and there’s very little character development individually or between the two characters as a couple. The end was interesting but even then I found Sebastian lacking in emotion or curiosity. I strongly suggest anyone interested in reading this book reads the prequel first before reading this, it was free to download at the time of writing this review. I received a copy of this book from the author. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.
Very well written, full of drama, love, steam, abuse, emotions, intrigue, suspense, anger, twists and turns. Mickie is from the present who finds a new job working on a magazine that deals with the Regency period. Sebastien is from the past-1812- and living in the home of a Duke waiting to marry his daughter. But he wore the Devil mask at the first ball, burying it in the gardens not to be found. The rumors he started worked and chased away any one that wanted to marry the Duke's daughter. Mickie sees the devil mask at the home's museum where she is to do a photo shoot for the magazine. She touches it and is transported to Sebastien's time. She realizes that this mask will be her only way to get to the future and will need to find it. She then runs into the Princess who seems to know that she is not the daughter and not sure why she is here. Mickie wants to head home and Sebastien wants her after he finally realizes she is not the daughter. Wish there is an extended epilogue or better another book about them. Would recommend to others.

I really enjoyed writing this book - it was a unique trip through time into Regency England, an era I had previously not explored in depth.
After visiting the time period, I've decided I will be returning. My current release, THE AUSTEN ANOMALY, is also set during the Regency era, this time in Hampshire at Chawton House with the Austen family.
In my version of history, during the winter of 1814, Jane struggles with her current work in progress. After more than one matron's misguided matchmaking, Jane hesitates for this trope to dominate yet another novel.
Yet without a focus for her heroine, a rich man's daughter, unconcerned about her own fate for the long term, Jane finds herself writing a series of vignettes with her heroine at the center of her fictional village of Highbury, searching for a focus for her.
But when Emma Hawthorne and Dr. Richard Harcourt abruptly arrive, their strange circumstances launch Jane into a flurry of creativity. At long last she turns her pen to paper, moving forward with her next novel!
Great story. Mickie is working on a regency period photo shoot when her boss asks that she model her gown from the ball. She is waiting for the photographer to show up in the mask gallery when she sees the devil mask. She is intriqued by it and its construction. She went to move it to look closer and the next minute she is in 1812. Sebastien finds her in the ballroom and calls her Margaret. She finds that she looks like her and plays along with it as she tries to find the mask somewhere in the estate. She is attracted to Sebastien and he thinks that her trip to London has changed her. This was an extra ordinary good story that has two people finding their other half. I enjoyed reading this book.

Mackenzie has been burned by love and wants nothing more to do with love. She is propelled back in time as she is looking at masks to Regency England where the Sebastien Ferrer Wellington who thinks she is his fiancé who he doesn’t want to marry. Will he find out who she is? Will Mackenzie fall in love with him?
The novel has an amazing story line that made me see it happening. Even with the twists and turns, I saw the events falling in to place. What an amazing book! One of the best romantic time travel books I have read!
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions are strictly my own.
I loved this story of Mackenzie being thrown back in time when she touches a devil mask and meeting Sebastien Ferrer Wellington, who is the illegitimate son of the Duke of Wellington. Sebastien believes she is his horrible fiancée, Margaret. He does not want to not marry Margaret and has been trying get out of the engagement. However, he finds himself attracted to Mackenzie or Mickie as she likes to be called even though he believes she is Margaret.
It is an advantage to read Betrayal in the Ballroom before reading this story. I would have preferred that Betrayal in the Ballroom be the first chapter or so of this book but that is my opinion only.
Wordy, verbose, filled with incomplete sentences and fractured thoughts that should have been caught long before ARC status, this book takes far too long to get to the point.
The FMC has a sympathetic edge due to her circumstances, but the MMC has no real redeemable qualities. They only end up together (not a spoiler; this is a romance, after all) basically because chemistry and animal attraction wins out.
Find a better author who knows how to structure a thought and a sentence.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I was really looking forward to this because I rarely come across a time travel romance on Netgalley. I was disappointed. In the beginning, I was so confused I felt I was missing something but supposedly this is a standalone. I did like how the main character had to try to fit into the past but the main characters interacted maybe 3 times and all the sudden they are changing their entire life? It was just not for me.
I found the beginning a little slow, and this book grabbed my attention after four chapters. It took some time before the two main characters, Mickie and Sebastien, finally met. There are a lot of descriptions and not much dialogue. Overall, I thought this novella was a good time-travel romance. Rating 3.5/5⭐️.

Mickie was thrust back to 1815. When she woke up, Sebastian was there and thought her to be Margaret, his betrothed. He thought she acted out of sorts. As time went by, Princess Caroline figured out that she wasn’t Margaret at all. The two resembled each other that all were fooled. She needed to get back to present day. She needed to find the devil mask she touched. This was a good story and should be read by you.
A time-travel romance with some unexpected twists and turns! The way the various characters interact makes for a good story, and not everyone behaves predictably. The time travel aspect is well handled, but it requires a bit of fantasy to believe that two of the women could look so similar. The Regency setting is delightful. I received an ARC from the author but my opinion is given voluntarily.
So so so wordy. I felt like this book has so much that was not needed and so much that could have been better explained. He book has so much potential but fell completely flat.

Loved reading the wonderfully written story. When Mickie gets thrown back in time, she meets the alluring man, Sebastian, and feels drawn to him, but Sebastian thinks Mickie is Margaret, his fiancé, who he wants nothing to do with until now. Read the highly recommended and a must read riveting romance story.
Thanks to BookSprout and NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion...
This is a time travel romance where a modern woman travels back to Regency times. There is a prequel called Betrayal in the Ballroom that lays a back story for this book, and this story references back to that frequently.
Mackenzie, aka Mickie, is a costume/set designer who used to work in the theatre until a betrayal from her lover. Broken hearted, she leaves all that behind to start a new career working for a specialty historical magazine. During a photo shoot, she touches a devil mask and is whisked to the Regency period where she is presumed to be Margaret, the daughter of a Duke, affianced to the eldest son of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, Sebastien Ferrer Wellington. There is significant family drama, back biting, and conspiracies in this story between Sebastian, the Duke, and Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of the Prince Regent, who plays a significant role in this story. Mickie lands in the midst of this drama and is swept up in it, drawn into the mechanisms of Caroline, and a sudden attraction between herself and Sebastian, who cannot understand the sudden new draw to his reviled fiancee.
This story plays fast and loose with history, primogeniture/inheritances, and I found that the writing was very jumpy and the motivations of the various players and how they behave do not make sense for me.
For example, this story makes it seem like Wellesley and the Duke of the story were childhood friends of equal status, and the implication was that Wellesley has been a duke for awhile - BUT, he did not become the first Duke of Wellington until 1814, and this story occurs just before the battle of Waterloo (1815), and starts in Betrayal in the Ballroom a couple of years prior (1813), before Wellesley becomes Duke. So why would the Duke feel such an obligation so many years ago to a person who would have been quite below him in status (Wellesley was not even a baron - Baron of Douro, until 1809)? The Duke wants to manipulate his daughter's marriage with the idea that whoever marries her would a) have their offspring inherit the dukedom, and then later b) by wedding her, become Duke. Not necessarily right. There is the entire issue of Sebastian's parentage as well as they treat him as a bastard, but in this story, Wellesley did marry his mother, apparently a Portuguese lady who died, but was estranged from her family. While the story implies that he is not accepted as a legal heir to Wellington and the equivalent to being a bastard - it does not explain how in a satisfactory manner - other than this is a way to explain the existence of this fictional character. Also, WHY does he want to continue to live in the house of his hated fiancee and disdained father in law to be - he does not want to marry Margaret, hates her and her father, but refuses to leave - WHY?????? Let's not forget that both he and the Duke were having sexual relations with the estranged Princess of Wales.... Also, some of the lingo was just not right either - such as references Regency women's undergarments as "briefs".
This was a fractured, irregular, confusing story. I enjoyed story of Mickie and her new job and life more than the so-called romance and time travel aspect.
The book was confusing and scattered. I had to keep reading paragraphs over and over trying to make out what was happening. I honestly feel like I could've skipped multiple chapters in the beginning and not have suffered for it at all. When the MMC is finally introduced, he's extremely unlikable. I started liking the FMC towards the end when she tells off the MMC and another character...but then she immediately caves and forgives the MMC for being horrible. Also, the way the author writes about women in particular is straight up hateful at times.
Mickie's life has changed hopefully for the better but something happens and she is taken back in time. Not knowing what to expect she encounters a fellow which he thinks is his fiancée. But things get difficult when she finds out what the Duke has in store for her. She needs to find a way back to her time. Her feeling has grown for a man and neither wants to separate from the other. Will he go back with her if possible or stay in his on time? A great time travel story with a lot of spice to keep you entertained till the end.
