What Man Meant for Evil: An Aquidneck Island Adventure

Rate this book
Alberta’s life was turned upside-down when she was ten. Rather than go to the normal summer camps her parents sent her to every year, her father was taking her to Rhode Island to stay with her Aunt for the summer. She would be staying a real island called Aquidneck, a part of the state of Rhode Island. It was promising to be the adventure of her life, at least to a ten year old girl.
Things changed quickly when, rather than stay a few days, her father quickly departed barely saying good-bye to his daughter. Aunt Tully seemed to be a caring kind of woman so Alberta determined to explore the island as if she was a part of the book Treasure Island.
Living on the island was a real dream come true for her until she heard things from her temporary friends in town. Her father wasn’t coming back to get her at the end of the summer. It was then that Aunt Tully realized that she waited one day too long to explain how things had changed.
Not only that, Aunt Tully had to explain that Gregory and Eunice were not her parents. She was adopted to satisfy her grandfather and after grandfather died, Gregory and Eunice were determined to be rid of the girl. Aunt Tully was the beneficiary of their resolve to remove Alberta from their family name.
When the biggest shock of her life settled down, Alberta was free to explore and live out her childhood fantasies with the help of Aunt Tully’s house helpers, Lars, and Mrs. Wallis. The four of them became the family Alberta never had.

A treasure

Alberta was treated as a disposable item once she was no longer kept to appease a family dictate. However this was the greatest blessing for her as she gained a true family in Aunt Tully's household. As she grew, Hayes continued to grow in admiration of her values.
The title is so appropriate in describing this story. Another gem from the talents of Jean Kuhnke.
