The hunky hockey dad, the bad boy coach, and a new start...

Bryson
Elmwood isn’t good for my love life. Sorry. I’m a positive person and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about small town life, but I haven’t had a date, let alone a boyfriend in years. That’s fine. My son is and always has been my number one focus.

Except now he’s grown and is rarely home. And it’s lonely.

Yes, the new hockey coach is hot and single, but he’s off limits. Smitty’s trouble with a capital T and his baggage outweighs mine. Besides, we said nothing would happen after “that” night. It was a one-time, never to be repeated deal.

So why can’t I stay away from him?

Smitty
Am I sad about retiring from pro hockey? Honestly, no. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t in pain. My body needs a rest, but I can’t go home. Everything has changed there and I need a distraction. Stat.

So… Elmwood.

Look, we all know I won’t last a whole season of coaching high school kids, but stepping in till they find a better candidate is a good temporary plan. And Bryson’s here.

There’s something about the hot dad with the sunny smile and bad jokes that makes me feel alive again. Look, I’m not in the market for forever. Been there, done that. I’ve risked my body, but I’m not giving my heart away again. I know thin ice when I see it.

Or do I?

Thin Ice is an MM bisexual, small town romance featuring a silver fox dad, a bad boy hockey player, and a new start on solid ground.

Thin Ice is book four in The Elmwood Stories series by Lane Hayes. I have loved every book in this series and just a couple of minutes ago, finished this one. Oh My Gosh!!!! I think this is my favorite of the series. I had to message my friend who already read it throughout the book exclaiming my love for Smitty and to repeatedly tell her how swoony these two men were. They are funny, sweet, so very sexy, and just plain wonderful. I love this series and I love this book!!!

Smitty Paluchek is thirty five years old. He is a pro hockey player and his body has had enough. He is retiring. When stress keeps him from wanting to spend time in his home town, he decides to head to Elmwood where he has been offered a coaching position at their new high school rink. He’s never even seen the town so maybe he should at least check it out. And also, there is a certain man there that he shared what was probably the most passionate night of his life with a few weeks ago. It was supposed to be just one night and never see each other again. But there was something about him that calls to Smitty. So what if he is the dad of the hockey player that is Smitty’s rival on the ice. He’ll still be glad to see him again, right?!

Bryson Milligan is forty six years old and is a successful real estate agent in Elmwood. He is also Luke’s dad, an up and coming hockey star. Bryson and his son are close and he has devoted his life to raising him. He lives his life buttoned up, always doing the right thing, always in control. But for just one night after he had traveled to see his son play, he threw out all his rules and spent a fantastic night with Smitty. They were never supposed to see each other again, until Smitty showed up in HIS town. He was all smiles and jokes and no, just no. This was not what they agreed to.

I know I shouldn’t choose a favorite but oh my, I loved Smitty so much. He did have his share of darkness in his past, of pain. But this man! He was so adorable His happy, sunny attitude and just general awesomeness had me swooning like a school girl. As for Bryson, don’t even get me started on his dad jokes. These two were just magical together. Secrets were shared and their bond grew stronger. But Smitty isn’t out. And Bryson is concerned with what his son would think, being involved with his rival. This is just them having some fun for awhile, right?

“He made me feel whole, wanted, needed. I was beginning to think he might feel the same about me.”

Get ready to smile so much your cheeks hurt, and for your heart to melt right out of your chest. There was one scene, a happy one so don’t worry, that made me cry happy tears. No, I wasn’t too invested in this story was I?!

I am repeating myself now so just go ahead and grab this book. Better yet, if you haven’t read it yet, start at the beginning and read the whole series. There is a new book coming out sometime soon and I am beside myself with excitement about it. But for now, Smitty and Bryson are my favorites.

What happened to slow burn? It seems like in every romance I've read lately, the MCs have sex in the first few chapters. Here, Smitty and Bryson fuck legit an hour after meeting.

The next time Bryson sees Smitty, he's rude and standoffish, acting like Smitty has no right to move to Elmwood.

I didn't much like Bryson tbh. He was so damn obsessed with image and had delusions of self-grandeur, thinking anything he did would reflect on his son, a hockey star. Sorry, Bryson, you're not that important.

I loved Smitty though and hated that what his ex-wife did to him was normalized. Smitty's best friend (I use that term loosely) and his wife were still on good terms with Smitty's ex, like she wasn't a fucking monster who dumped her husband for something he couldn't control.

The ending was really rushed, so the epilogue felt like it came out of nowhere.

I always enjoy Lane Hayes' writing style, but this wasn't my favorite story of the series.

I enjoy the Elmwood hockey series so much!!

We finally get to know Bryson better with this installment and all I wanted to do was wrap him in a blanket and tell him not to be so hard on himself 🥹

Smitty was great entertainment and Bryson's dad jokes had me laughing way too hard - I absolutely love dad jokes, the cheesier the better!

I would have liked to see more of the relationship development between Smitty and Bryson's son Jake though , and all three of them as a family. They were so snarky with each other and I loved that, I just wanted more and to see Bryson relax into their relationship.

Very intrigued to read Denny's book next...

Oh I loved this book, definitely my favourite one so far.

While on the surface it seems relatively low angst, it's actually got a much more serious undercurrent than first appears.

Bryson's moved on from a pretty destructive teen and early adult addictive period in his life to become the reliable real estate agent and dad to Jake. But he's not really living his life at all, and now Jake’s left home for his ice hockey career, he's facing crushing loneliness.

Smitty, on the other hand, is coming to the end of his ice hockey life. He's just bowed out after playing his final game and is heading off to help coach a summer camp while avoiding the demons of his failed marriage and his lack of enthusiasm for his new direction in life.

Their paths have already crossed, when they had a seriously steamy, no strings attached and no intention of ever meeting again just before Smitty retired.

So both are surprised to once again find themselves in the same orbit when Smitty ends up in Elmwood.

What I loved the most about this is how mature the relationship is. It might start off from a position of sexual attraction and the thrill of a hidden "affair" but both men find themselves opening up and sharing the hurts they've kept locked up tight.

There's no stupid misunderstandings or faked drama for the sake of it. They grow into their feelings the same way as their friendship expands.

Lane always writes older men well, Bryson is a decade or so older than Smittty, but the younger man's also mature and has dealt with plenty of his own painful losses. Together they bring healing and a sense if comforting safety that's a joy to read.

Of course they stumble on the way, but it's never for trivial reasons and it's only really at the crunch point when they hit the 'go big or go home' step in their relationship journey that they both start to panic.

You know it's all going to come right in the end, but I especially loved the path Lane takes them down to reach their HEA.

With at least two more books to come in this series and potential for more set in the neighbouring towns, I'm seriously stoked.

Nice, albeit a bit predictable hockey/small town romance with two likable, adult men 🥰

You can’t really go wrong if you pick up an audiobook narrated by Nick J. Russo - again, I enjoyed listening to him. He has the gift of making you forget that there’s only one person you’re hearing, his characters have unique voices and are easy to distinguish.

As for the story - it’s an almost drama free love story between two grownups who - thank God - actually talk things out. It’s the story of Bryson, father to a college aged son (Jake) who plays hockey, and Smitty (named after Aerosmith 😂), Jake’s arch nemesis on ice. A few games before retiring from hockey, Smitty and Bryson have a one night stand, both perfectly happy to NOT see each other again afterwards.

All goes as planned, until Smitty becomes the highschool hockey coach in Elmwood, the town where Bryson lives.

I really loved their banter, and I especially loved Bryson’s dad jokes. The plot itself is… nice. A bit predictable, but I didn’t mind, seeing as real life is pretty hectic at the moment.

3.5 stars rounded up, mainly because of NJR.

Bryson & Smitty
Rating: 3.6 ⭐

- Age Gap (11yrs)
- Small Town
- Realtor/Hockey Coach
- Neighbors
- Coming Out
- Bisexual MC
- Silver Fox Single Dad

This is a story of how a one-night stand turns into something more. Both men are at a point in their lives where everything is changing and leaving them floundering a bit. Bryson's son is doing well in the AHL and might get picked up by the NHL the following season. He's still living in the small town of Elmwood selling houses and living in a giant empty house, surrounded by quiet. Smitty is retiring from professional hockey and even with a broadcasting gig setup for the fall it doesn't feel right for him, but he's alone and hates going home for visits, it's too mentally draining.

They meet after a game between Smitty's team and Bryson’s son, Jake, when Bryson needs a tire change. Bryson doesn't realize at first that the hunk of a man helping him in his hour of need is the same guy his son just punched during a game. They have a nice chat and end up meeting at the hotel bar later to hangout, which leads to a steamy one-night stand since they'll never see each other again. Well, months later after a painful visit home during the summer for Smitty he remembers the description of the small town that Bryson told him about. He decides to take a detour to the town to see what it's all about and maybe he will see the sexy silver fox again. He ends up agreeing to help coach the high school’s hockey team until they find the replacement they need. Bryson freaks the hell out when he finds out that Smitty is in his town. His carefully crafted upstanding citizen persona is about to be wrecked and by a closeted bi hockey hunk no less. Bryson isn’t very kind to Smitty when they meet up again, but Bryson doesn’t know how to handle this new development.

Bryson tries desperately to avoid Smitty at first but they kept ending up in the same place anyways. Smitty starts trying to become friends with Bryson and begins breaking down his barriers. They become friends, then friends with benefits and just keep their active sex life secret. With Jake having a grudge against Smitty, Bryson is conflicted about his relationship with his new neighbor even with the arrangement being temporary. Their feelings start to blossom, they share painful and dark truths with each other, and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. The couple is stinking cute together with all the domestic stuff they do. I loved how Smitty would leave random stuff at Bryson's door so that he would have to bring it back over to Smitty's house. Every time that door closed behind Bryson coming into the house, they just go at it!

Bryson does get spooked once he realizes that he's in love with Smitty, it wasn't part of the deal, so of course he breaks off their arrangement. They're both sad about the breakup but they definitely needed the breather to collect their thoughts about what was really happening and how they truly felt about each other. Smitty does a grand gesture and all is well! The epilogue of two years later was sweet and gave a look into how their relationship progressed and how Smitty has become a part of Elmwood.

I really enjoyed this one. Both Bryson and Smitty had so many things to work through, but together these two were amazing. I just loved how much peace they brought each other. I also enjoyed how Smitty confronted Jake. He did it as an adult and respectfully and I loved that their relationship got better after that.

I wish we would've had more at the end with these two and how there life is going in the future with all the changes that they've had. Ugh, hopefully we see them in the next book some.

(DNF@36% on May 28th, 2024) While I more or less enjoyed the first three books in this series, it might be time for me to say goodbye to Elmwood and its unlikely cast of retired professional gay hockey players who find equally unlikely romance with the one Elmwood resident who just happens to be single and gay as well.

It's not that I'm bitter; I just think I'm over this particular rinse-and-repeat plot whose success is determined by the charming qualities of its main characters. Unfortunately, I didn't find Bryson or Smitty particularly charming, and since I haven't felt drawn back to continue reading this story in over a week, the best thing to do would be to throw in the towel and park this one on the DNF shelf.

Themes: dual POV, retired hockey player, age difference, one night stand, small town

You present to me a single dad finding romance with a hockey player and I am absolutely going to devour it. Especially when it’s a bit of a later in life romance type situation happening. But, while I did devour it and think Bryson and Smitty were so adorable together – the progression between the two just was a little too fast for me. I just felt like the romance between Bryson and Smitty would’ve had more of a grip on me with a slower pace is all. But, nonetheless, it was a sweet read and it was fun to revisit the Elmwood series

I love Elmwood, so it was good to be back!

After a one and done hookup, Bryson was in shock when Smitty showed up as the new high school hockey coach. Afraid that this could potentially change the way the other residents viewed him, he tried to put up walls and distance. Smitty, however, wasn’t having it. If nothing else, he wanted Bryson’s friendship.

Friends with benefits worked for a while, but it was clear that they cared for one another as more than friends. I loved their story and that they got their HEA!!

(ENG) In a series that I love, this is the fourth book and my favorite so far.
We already knew Bryson as the perfect father and realtor in town. The best neighbor who is so kind he's boring. But Smitty's arrival is going to shake the facade he has worked so hard to build.
Smitty is a wonderful character. Really very funny, although he also has a very painful past.
Together they form a beautiful couple that fits perfectly into the world of Elmwood. Their growth as a couple, trusting and sharing their most painful secrets as well as their sweetest and funniest moments, is perfect.
These books are everything that's right. Easy reading (although I did shed a few tears with this story) that leaves your heart full.
Check out this little town and tell me about it!

Have I read any of the other books in this series? Nope.

Do I plan to read them now? ABSOLUTELY

This was my first book by Lane Hayes and I loved it!

Smitty Paluchek is a thirty-five-year-old, soon-to-be-retired hockey player trying to decide "what's next" for his life. During one of his last-ever games, he meets Bryson Milligan, a forty-six-year-old real estate agent, who just happens to be the father of another hockey player who has declared Smitty as his biggest rival on the ice.

After one steamy hotel hook-up, Smitty can't get Bryson out of his mind and ends up diverting his retirement plans to go to the small town of Elmwood and into Bryson's life. Cue the slow burn to begin!

Though there is a small bit of angst around what Bryson's son might think of the two of them together, I appreciated that Bryson stood up for himself and took ownership of the fact that he has lived his whole life for his son and he deserves happiness now too.

Najsympatyczniejszy i najbardziej perfekcyjny mieszkaniec Elmwood. A kimże on jest, by zabraniać Smittyemu przebywać w tym samym miasteczku, co on?

Oh, I really liked this book; it managed to draw some heartfelt sighs from me, and it was super easy to read. The story of Bryson and Smitty is one of those that you read in one sitting because it grabs you: Bryson is the father of a hockey player who happens to be Smitty's rival. After retiring from hockey, Smitty becomes the coach of the high school team in the small town of Elmwood. Is disaster about to strike? Well, yes and no. These two formed a lovely friendship before becoming something more, and I appreciated that. Although things moved quite quickly afterwards, and there were a few loose ends that got resolved as the pages turned. I liked that Bryson's son didn't make a big problem, that the whole town welcomed Smitty warmly, and that he had that beautiful gesture toward Bryson in the end.

📌 I received an e-copy of this book, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.

I adore this series. It's my favourite Lane Hayes series and one of my favourite hockey series too.
This is Bryson's story, who we've met in several of the other books, notably as the real estate agent, Jake's dad, and JC’s occasional hookup. This takes place some time after the last book, Jake is playing in the AFL and Bryson is struggling with being an empty nester. Into this comes Smitty, a soon to be retired hockey player and Bryson allows himself to have a one night stand, he'll never see Smitty again, right?
I loved Smitty, he's a total cinnamon roll. His attempts to get Bryson to notice him once he moves to Elmwood are bordering on juvenile but Smitty is so charming the you can't help but smile and he won this reader over in much the same way as he won Bryson.
The other couples all make an appearance s0 there's a chance to catch up with what's been happening in their lives without it taking over the story.
Nick J Russo does a brilliant job with the audio. If this is the end of Elmwood I'm going to need to go back to the start to get my fix.

* low angst
* small town
* age gap (35/49)
* older MCs
* bisexual

Even though Thin Ice is the fourth book in The Elmwood Stories series, it's the first one I've read. I had no issues with the past characters making guest appearances as there's enough detail to get an idea about their stories. So I can say confidently that this can be read as a standalone as well.

The MCs, Bryson and Smitty, spend a night together thinking they'd never see each other again. But Smitty is in a transitional phase in his life as far as work goes and on a whim he decided to take up a coaching position in Elmwood, where Bryson lives, though his decision had nothing to do with the other man.

At first, Bryson is reluctant to any kind of contact but soon he drops his walls and eventually, they begin dating. Everything is on the downlow though as Smitty isn't out as bi yet.

Bryson's son wasn't the biggest fan of Smitty but I liked how their relationship reluctantly changed and they had their own thing.

I liked this story a lot. I was invested in the plot and I wanted to see the MCs making it as a couple.

I’m very much enjoying the Elmwood Stories small-town romance series. The books are all hockey themed, relatively low angst, and have good feels. Thin Ice is no exception, bringing readers the story of Bryson, whom we have met before, finally getting his HEA. This story has a bit more weight with some heavier topics than the other stories in the past. And, like those other stories, there is a bit of a time jump between the books.

I’ve been really enjoying this series and I think this one might possibly be my favourite so far. Here we get to know Bryson a bit better - the local real estate agent and silver fox that’s popped up in the earlier books in the series. And Smitty - newly retired ice hockey player who’s come to Elmwood for initially a short term thing to coach the newly formed high school hockey team. The added complication is that Bryson’s son is an up and coming talent in hockey - and the person he seems to dislike the most is Smitty, following a fight when they played against each other one time.
I guess this is a new trope? Instead of enemies to lovers, it’s son’s enemy to lovers! Either way it really works and Bryson and Smitty have chemistry from the beginning. I liked their different personalities - Bryson is a bit buttoned up and worried about everything and Smitty is trying to find a place for himself post-retirement. They also both have things in their past that make them cautious about moving forward with any kind of relationship. Factoring in the age gap between them too, it all just worked for me.
I was glad to see at the end of the book that there are at least a couple more planned in the series and I’m looking forward to Denny’s book up next.

It was only meant to be a one-time hookup with someone he wouldn't see again. Bryson would have reconsidered his night with Smitty if he'd known Smitty would soon be arriving in Elmwood. Smitty, now a retired hockey player not yet out as bisexual, is not only a controversial figure on the ice but also less than liked by Bryson’s son, Jake. Their last encounter on the ice ended in a brawl. Now, with Smitty in town, navigating their relationship becomes increasingly complex, especially as Bryson attempts to maintain some distance, only to find it increasingly difficult.

Smitty had a post-retirement plan, but life took an unexpected turn, leading him to accept a high school coaching job in Elmwood—a place he never envisioned for himself. A part of him hoped this detour would reunite him with Bryson, whom he admittedly had more than just a fleeting interest in. In Elmwood, Smitty finds not just a potential new home but a chance at happiness and belonging, which he hadn't anticipated.

As they surrender to their undeniable chemistry, Bryson and Smitty navigate through their complicated situation. Their dynamic is charged with excellent banter and a sweet discovery of hidden facets of themselves. Together, they learn to be truly themselves, making their story not just compelling but deeply heartwarming.

This story, set against a backdrop of what appears to be a low-angst situation, reveals deeper, more serious undertones. Bryson has rebuilt his life from a troubled youth marked by addiction to become a dependable real estate agent and father. Yet, with Jake moving away to pursue his hockey career, Bryson is left with a deep feeling of lonliness. Smitty, meanwhile, faces his own crossroads, having ended his ice hockey career and a failed marriage, unsure about his future direction.

Their accidental reunion in Elmwood evolves from one steamy night into a mature, reflective partnership where both men share and heal from their past pains. Lane skillfully avoids unnecessary drama, allowing their relationship to mature as naturally as their friendship deepens.

Both characters, from different generations, bring their own experiences and vulnerabilities, but together they find healing and comfort. Their journey is not without its problems, particularly as they approach a critical decision point in their relationship, yet their growth and ultimate resolution are profoundly satisfying.

This book was full of dad jokes and spice. It was a beautiful story of self discovery and the importance of putting yourself out there to get what you want. With more books anticipated in this series and potential expansions into neighboring towns, I can't wait for more heartwarming tales from Elmwood.

Yet another fabulous story in the Elmwood Stories series, and you always have me at single dad. Jake may be grown and away from home but that doesn't detract from Bryson's love and care for his son, and his need to support and protect him as well.
Bryson and Smitty possibly have bad idea written all over them but that one night was everything they both needed. What they didn't need, well, what Bryson didn't need was the now ex hockey player that his son cannot stand staying in town to help coach hockey at the new high school.
I love the slow but entertaining development of their relationship from there. Smitty is sure that he wants Bryson again but has no wish for a relationship along with not being out as bisexual to anyone. Bryson doesn't want anyone knowing what happened between them as Elmwood is the king of gossips and something would get back to his son. However, Smitty is charming, fun, and just plain hot and so it's a hard battle to try and win. Their chemistry jumps off the page and being together, in and out of bed, is clearly something they both enjoy and it's a waiting game to see who will crack from catching feelings and then giving up their secrets to the outside world. I really felt for Smitty for what he's gone through in the past as, as a generalisation, the man's POV, feelings and mental health isn't always taken into consideration.
Another entertaining read from Lane Hayes! It's a perfect addition to the series and I love the slight angst that brings some heightened emotion to the story.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I have been reading this as an ARC.

After Bryson Milligans’s son, Liam has a fight with Smitty Palucheck during an ice hockey game, Smitty helps Bryson with a flat tyre on his car. They have a one night stand never to be repeated as they will never see each other ever again.

Riley (Next Season) needs a new ice hockey coach at Elmwood high school and who should take the job int he home town of Bryson? None other than Smitty. He will also need a new place to live and needs the help of a real estate agent, and the best in town is Bryson Milligan.

Bryson is very standoffish towards Smitty when he sees him in town. With the help of Bryson, Smitty finds a house on the same street and opposite Bryson. Cue helping out with odd jobs and other (ahem) “jobs”.

This age gap, hunky dad and hockey coach, small town romance is just a perfect low angst read you need right now.

I have loved my re-visit to Elmwood. It’s a wonderful town that I want to visit. Lane Hayes makes you want to have a coffee at Rise and Grind, pick up a cookie at Henderson’s Bakery and have a meal at the diner. The writing flows very easily and grabs your attention immediately. I would recommend reading all the books in the Elmwood series, they are all amazing.

“He was so f*cking…everything. So handsome, so magnetic, so good. I wasn’t any of those things, but I wanted to be better, do better. For Bry. For me too, but mostly…for him”.

It was only supposed to be a one time hook up. Bryson never would have hooked up with Smitty if he knew Smitty was coming to Elmwood. Not only is Smitty a now retired hockey player who isn’t out to the world as bi yet but Bryson’s son doesn’t exactly like him. At least on the ice. And the last time they were on the ice together, fists flew. But things are going to be a lot more complicated with Smitty in town. And while Bryson tries to keep a wall between them, it becomes very hard to do. Smitty thought he had a plan after retirement but then he found himself taking a detour and accepting a high school coaching position in Elmwood. And sure, he will admit that a tiny part of him hoped to see Bryson again. Turns out, he really likes him. And he just wants to get to know him more and find a place where he belongs and where he is happy. Who knew that place would be somewhere like Elmwood. And though they finally give in to the pull between them again, things are still a bit complicated but these two will be sure to figure it out! I loved Bryson and Smitty’s dynamic. They had great banter and were opposites in many ways. But they brought out parts of themselves they never really get to be. They could truly be themselves with one another. It was really sweet! Another great story in Elmwood and I am looking forward to the next one!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a modern queer sports romance, the fourth book in a series that should be read in order. Bryson and Smitty have a complicated background; from one-night stand to antagonized neighbors to true love! There was a vulnerability to Smitty that identified with him which had me crying by the end for his story especially!

He loves his new town and he loves his son, doing everything he can for them. There is one problem he as not had a date in years and the coach of a team may seem the one he would want but they are off limits. Will he take that step? What will his son say? How will it all go? Follow him to find out

Bryson and Smitty

I really enjoyed Bryson's story. His relationship with his son was really sweet. And I loved the moment between them at the end. This has been a great series so far. I can't wait for the next release.

There's just something about this series that gives me all the feels. I see that there's only 2 more installments to go but I could stay in this small town forever. I saw that there is a chance of a series in the small towns around, so bring those on!

5⭐ Low angst, light, and sexy. Exactly what I needed. I read it in one day. Definite reread. Only one complaint - please choose a cover model that looks like one of the main characters.
