“Really enjoyed this book! It’s an adventure story for the ages — mystery and intrigue, with a dose of brotherly love (and conflict, too). I could see this becoming a Kik and Mac series!” — Emily Auerswald, Upper School Librarian, Greenwich Country Day School
"A Pirates' Pact is Branson's fifth book about New Earth, but it's the first book specifically aimed at middle graders. It allows the reader a peek into the mischievous world of ten-year-old twins [and] the complicated bonds between brothers. It's a coming of age adventure, a treasure hunt almost on a par with The Goonies." — Sally Altass, Reedsy Reviewer
"Branson casts her storyline to new readers as she dives deep into a weekend with the spotlight on Kat Wallace’s twin boys. Having started to sail apart, Kik and Mac must work together to discover, through fights, foes, and hidden secrets, that the biggest treasure they can find is the friendship they have always had with each other. Whatever else Bosch is hiding comes in second to the affirmation of two brothers, past and present, who will always make sure the other half gets his due share." — Iris Hermann, Freelance editor
"The story is captivating and shows the bonds twins have. I was curious to see if they would find the treasure. This book kept twisting and turning, and I didn't expect that pirates were still around." — Sanjay, 12
“A Pirates’ Pact is an enchanting story filled with good description that makes you feel like you are actually in the story. After I started the first page I couldn't put it down.” — Junie, 11
"What I loved about A Pirates’ Pact was the immediate suspense right from the start. I really liked getting to know Kik and Mac." — Emory, 11

Wow! What a page-turner! I absolutely adore Sarah Branson’s incredible imagination.
A Pirates Pact A Kik & Mac Adventure is the new Earth series that’s a must read for middle grade readers.
I enjoyed every word, page and chapter.
The twins Kik and Mac live in the same world as us, but three hundred years in the future.
Kik and Mac maybe twins but they seem like chalk and cheese. They look nothing a like and are completely different, in the things they do.
Mac hangs with his friends, while his brother Kik, writes in his journal.
It seems Mac can’t keep out of trouble in school and even at home.
He has knocked his mum’s gift from her Papa, a painting of a pirate off from the wall.
There’s so much more about Kik and Mac to explore and enjoy!
Middle grade readers you are in for a wonderful day reading this book.
What’s to look forward to, A pirates Pact is a tale of friendship, self-discovery, and the enduring strength of family ties.
Will Kik’s and Mac’s pact without the challenges ahead? Embark on this middle grade adventure where bonds are forged, secrets are unveiled, and treasure go beyond gold and jewels.
A Pirate’s Pact is filled with such fun and adventure. I always loved the stories of pirates and their quests when I was younger and now I get to experience them through reading this book! As a middle school librarian, I see how much students love novels filled with adventure and I believe this would be a great book to add to our collection. Happy reading!
What happens when a broken heirloom unlocks a pirate adventure you never saw coming?✨🏴☠️
A Pirates' Pact by Sarah Branson is pure swashbuckling magic with heart!
Told through the eyes of twins Kik and Mac, this book instantly pulled me in with its blend of mischief, mystery, and meaningful family dynamics. Mac’s bold, troublemaking energy had me smiling (and occasionally shaking my head), while Kik’s quieter, introspective nature gave the story a deeper emotional layer that really stuck with me. Their sibling dynamic felt so real, messy, loving, and full of growing pains.
What I loved most was how the adventure wasn’t just about pirate treasure, though yes, there’s a hidden map and plenty of excitement 👀. It’s also about identity, belonging, and the complexities of growing up between two cultures. The island of Bosch felt vibrant and alive, and I appreciated how the story balanced high-stakes adventure with heartfelt moments about family and self-discovery.
And that twist when the broken heirloom reveals a secret? I was all in. From there, the pacing picks up into a thrilling journey that kept me turning pages, rooting for both brothers to figure things out, not just the mystery, but each other too.
If you love middle grade adventures with emotional depth, sibling bonds, and a touch of pirate chaos, this one is absolutely worth the voyage. ⚓️
✨️Thank you, Book Publicity Services and Sarah Branson, for sharing the amazing adventures of A Pirates' Pact with me!
This is the story of twin brothers, Mat and Kik who live on the pirate island Bosch. The brothers are very different both physically and in personality. This is a source of friction between the two boys and results in frequent arguments. They resent being twins and neither fully understands the other. When Mat gets in trouble with school and the brothers stumble across a treasure map, it is the catalyst for an adventure and a journey to find treasure which will bring them closer together.
This is an engaging adventure and I really enjoyed the family dynamics. As a mother of twins there is so much that I recognised here in the dynamics of the boys’ relationships. I loved how the journey brought the boys closer together and provided them with an opportunity to understand each other better. I was intrigued by the idea of this book being set three hundred years in the future and particularly liked the map at the start.
A Pirate’s Pact is the author’s fifth book about New Earth, Bosch and Kat, but in the blurb it states, ‘it’s the first book specifically aimed at middle graders.' As a UK reader this slightly wrong-footed me. This book is published in the US where I think middle graders are typically 11-14 whereas in the UK middle grade refers to 8-12 years. I note that other reviews have listed some of the words used and I would caution that there are words which are definitely more young adult than middle grade in the UK. For example the word crap. I also think that some of the dialogue is probably more familiar to a US readership.
The author deals sensitively with issues such as racial bullying and identity. Kik is racially abused by boys in his class and the terms that the boys used were rather shocking. It was great to see the brothers supporting each other against the bullies and being able to unpick the racist language used.
"It might be hard to be a twin sometimes, but it was good to have a brother."
When twins Mac & Kik find a piece of a tattered treasure map, they decide to work together and find the rest of the map. They overcome their differences and grow closer as brothers when they share their fears and secrets. Full of adventure and reminiscent of the Goonies. Great read aloud for your young readers. With short chapters and some illustrations, you're sure to fly through it.
Thanks, Sarah Branson and @bookpublicityservices for this copy of A Pirates' Pact.
A Pirates' Pact is a fun adventure featuring twin brothers who have been growing apart recently. They find their brotherly friendship again while on the hunt for long lost treasure and end up learning new things about each other along the way.
This was such a quick read with a small look into the world that Sarah Branson has created for her Pirates of New Earth series. I enjoyed following Kik and Mac on this side quest. I also really liked the couple interactions with their older sister and the illustrations that were included throughout the book.
You can tell the boys are both struggling a bit with finding their own separate identities, but this adventure helps them realize they are more than just a package deal. They can choose to have different interests, while still having a brotherly bond and twin connection.
-Middle Grade -Fast Paced -Set in the Future -Treasure Hunting -Coming of Age -Sibling Bonding -Courage and Bravery
A Pirate’s Pact: A Kik & Mac Adventure, written by Sarah Branson, published in 2024 is a fiction adventure novel geared towards middle school readers. The story takes place three hundred years in the future on a pirate island of Bosch. The protagonists are fraternal twin brothers, Mac and Kik Shima. This adventure or action novel that focuses on relatable themes of family bonds, friendships, bullying, and self discovery.
The story starts off with the two brothers, Mac and Kik, once close at odds with each other. The change of dynamics in the once tight brotherly bond hits a pivotal point when a family painting is almost ruined by Mac during a sibling scuffle. During the incident between the brothers, a map is discovered. Thus, beginning the adventure and pact that renews the brotherly bond between the twins. During the treasure hunt, the twins are faced with many challenges.
I enjoyed the fast pace of the book and the character development of the twins. The adventure novel is written in modern language and not in pirate jargon. Even though it is set in the future, the adventure aspect being introduced as a “treasure hunt,” is a great hook for readers. I really liked how the author introduced sensitive subjects like racism, bullying, and self discovery in a way that middle school students can understand. I am glad that Book Publicity Services reached out to me to read and review this book. As a school librarian, I am always on the look out for books that I can recommend to my reluctant readers.
A pirates’ pact delivers a fast, energetic adventure with the kind of heart and momentum that immediately brings the classic Goonie vibes to mind. The story follows two brothers who find themselves pulled into danger, mystery, and a treasure hunt path that never slows down. I especially connected with the way the book centers family, how the brothers rely on each other, push through fear, and stay close even when the stakes rise. I only wish it were longer!
This was a fun adventure story of twin brothers that are reconnecting while discovering treasure. Perfect for 8-10 year olds! Thanks to @bookpublicityservices for my gifted copy
A Pirates' Pact is certainly meant for readers who love adventure, especially when pirate maps and treasure hunting is involved! Kik and Mac are twin brothers who couldn't be more different! The discovery of an old map brings the brothers together as they explore the island to solve clues, which they're hoping lead to treasure. During their adventure, Kik and Mac are faced with various challenges that end up strengthening their bond as brothers. Set 300 years in the future, this is more than a tale of daring adventure and pirates. Readers will relate to Kik and Mac's sometimes difficult relationship to each other and to their family. There are also struggles with friends and with foes, as well as Kik's struggle with his identity and determining where he fits in. I truly did not think I would enjoy this book as much as I did, but I would now be very glad to join Kik and Mac on another adventure! Thank you to Book Publicity Services for sending me a copy of this book to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Pirate's Pack by Sarah Branson is a fantasy middle grade novel set in an alternate future. (Before reading I didn't realize it was apart of a bigger fantasy world!)
It's about twin brothers Kik and Mac who are dealing with a strained relationship but set out on a grand adventure looking for buried treasure.
Kik and Mac are twins but they look differently and that causes a lot of issue for Kik specifically. He is subject to racism and bigotry. It causes a lot of pain, especially when it's Mac's friends who often cause it. For whatever reason, Mac doesn't seem to realize what's going on but when he finally takes the time to witness and understand what his brother was going through, I think their relationship is able to mend and grow.
Overall it was a fun story about family bonds and a whole lot of adventure!

🥀The book "Pirates' Pact: A Kik & Mac Adventure" is penned by the author Sarah Branson. The exciting travel entices readers with intrigue, friendship, and the everlasting appeal of pirate mythology. This middle-grade book introduces us to the nearly eleven-year-old twins, Mac and Kik, as they struggle with the intricacies of individuality, family, and the surprising finding of a secret pirate treasure map against set against the background of the legendary pirate island of Bosch.
🥀The story unfolds with the ideal balance of heart, comedy, and amazement that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of vibrant experiences. The story comes from the pleasant mischievous touch of Mac, the bold and cunning brother, who brings unexpected turns and hilarious moments. Readers will like him because of his charming and fascinating exploits in an attempt to win over new acquaintances.
🥀However, Kik's reflective personality gives the narrative substance. The story takes readers on a more introspective and emotional journey as he struggles with his background and keeps a deep secret. By deftly combining these separate character arcs, the author crafts a narrative tapestry which is as complex and varied as Bosch's real world.
🥀This book deftly examines topics that reverberate beyond of the boundaries of the pirate island in addition to providing a compelling portrait of Bosch. The twins' mixed heritage—their mother is from Bosch and their father is from Edo—richens the story in more ways than one. The author skillfully weaves cultural allusions throughout the narrative to promote diversity appreciation and the notion that our individual backgrounds shape who we are.
🥀The brothers' search, which is started by a broken family heirloom, is the central theme of the narrative. 🥀They are thrust into an engrossing quest that not only puts their commitment to the test but also fundamentally alters their perception of what family connections are when a concealed section of a pirate treasure treasure turns up. The narrative is expertly interlaced with themes of companionship, discovery of oneself, and the enduring power of familial bonds.
🥀More than just a daring adventure, this book is an ode of the enchantment found in friendships from childhood and the ties that survive the test of time. Readers will be thrust into a world where relationships are put to the test, secrets are revealed, and riches beyond wealth and gems await Kik and Mac as they set out on their journey. Middle-grade readers of all ages will love the author's charming and captivating work, which will leave them itching for more high-seas adventures with Kik and Mac. Strongly suggested for everyone looking for an exciting and endearing journey that continues long beyond the last page.
Brothers, who are twins but as different as can be, discover a call to adventure and find themselves in all sorts of situations.
Mac is in trouble again. Although he was just trying to retrieve a ball for a friend, his climb up the school building to get it didn't gain bonus points with the teacher. Instead, Mac heads home with a note, which his mom has to sign. His twin brother, definitely, doesn't have his back. When the two end up in a back-and-forth, which leaves a damaged family heirloom, they discover a map. And that's the beginning of more than a treasure hunting adventure.
This is a fun story, which packs heart, a bit of food for thought, and adventure. The first chapters let the reader sink into the family dynamics and the twin's personalities. There's a touch of action as Mac dare-devil's on the school walls, but it's the family relationships which take the stage during these pages. The action gets going a few chapters in. While there are all sorts of challenges the two face as they search for the treasure, this read also pays attention to the personal growth of the characters and their relationships to those around them. So, there's depth and not just action. The two brothers are easy to connect with and come across with natural flair as they butt heads, at times, and yet, stick together and support each other when needed.
The read works well for the younger and mid-range of the middle grade audience, and the length suits this direction nicely as well. The future setting confused me a little, though. The year is about 2300 and technology has been set to the side thanks to natural disasters, wars, and more. This is totally fine, but the scenes, dialogue, concerns, surroundings, world, and more fit perfectly to the 1960's to 1980's. I just expected a few differences (clothes, buildings, and such). But it did make for a nice map, which was a treat as much as the several sketches sprinkled throughout.
It's an enjoyable tale for those who like wholesome adventures with quite a bit of family dynamic, and it appears that there will be more adventures to come.
A Heartfelt Pirate Adventure About Brotherhood, Identity, and Growing Up
A Pirates’ Pact by Sarah Branson is a delightful and emotionally grounded middle grade adventure that blends treasure hunting excitement with a thoughtful exploration of family, identity, and brotherly bonds. Set on the richly imagined pirate island of Bosch, the story follows nearly eleven-year-old twins Kik and Mac as they navigate change, conflict, and the complicated journey of growing up.
Branson does an excellent job distinguishing the twins’ personalities. Mac is impulsive, bold, and eager to impress, while Kik is quiet, observant, and wrestling with a deeply personal secret. Their differences feel authentic and relatable, especially for middle grade readers who may see themselves in one or both of the brothers. When a moment of anger leads to the discovery of a hidden pirate treasure map, the adventure that follows becomes as much about emotional growth as it is about uncovering secrets buried long ago.
The treasure hunt is fun, fast-paced, and engaging, evoking the spirit of classic adventure stories while remaining firmly rooted in character development. What truly sets A Pirates’ Pact apart is its focus on the relationship between siblings. Through danger, mistakes, and moments of honesty, Kik and Mac learn to communicate, support one another, and redefine what it means to be brothers and friends.
Branson handles heavier themes such as bullying, cultural identity, and family expectations with care, balancing them with humor, warmth, and a sense of joy that keeps the story accessible for younger readers. While this book expands an already established world, it stands confidently on its own and works beautifully as an introduction to the series.
A Pirates’ Pact is a charming, adventurous, and meaningful read that offers more than just pirates and treasure. It’s a story about empathy, understanding, and the enduring strength of family perfect for middle grade readers who enjoy action with heart.
Kik & Mac are twins who live on the island of Bosch. Their family includes their Mom, the island’s master commander of the pirate force, their “bonus” dad, and two sisters. At 10 years old, their close friendship is starting to fray. Mac has annoying friends who tend to bully Kik. Kik would rather stay quietly writing indoors away from Mac’s exploits. When they discover a secret map and letter written by their grandfather to their mother, they are motivated to work together to find the treasure that must surely be hidden at its end. Can they be “fratres in aeturnum” long enough to find the treasure? Or will their differences and a run-in with bullies ruin their quest?
The world of Bosch, 300 years in the future, is pretty much like a wild version of today. The story is a gentle adventure through the forests and caves of their island and shows brothers who are trying to acknowledge their differences and find common ground. Kik has a secret about a crush that he finally reveals to his brother in a sweet scene of acceptance. The bullying definitely has an ugly racial tone. The brothers are mixed race and one bully calls Kik “Mr. Slant-Eyes.” Mac rises to defend Kik, and readers will recognize that this speculative world has some of the same problems as our own. The boys’ older sister Grey has a surprising role in keeping the peace. What the brothers do when they find the treasure will surprise readers. This is a gentle speculative adventure that may appeal to readers who shy away from books with too much danger.
A map at the beginning allows readers to track the brothers’ progress. A few black and white drawings, alas, are so faint as to be nearly useless to readers.
Except for the end of the hunt in the cave, I felt that the excitement readers might expect for a book with “pirates” in the title is mostly absent.
While the boys in this story search for pirate treasure there isn’t really as much pirate content here as the title may suggest which might disappoint some readers, however, if you’re in the mood for a bit of action and adventure this delivers that with a Hardy Boys kind of feel to it.
This book is set three hundred years in the future but since environmental damage has taken away most technology, this didn’t seem particularly futuristic (maybe the other books set in the same universe lend themselves better to showcasing the time period, I don’t know). This felt like it could have just as easily taken place anywhere from the 1950’s to the 90’s, which I didn’t mind, but for taking place three hundred years from now, I guess I felt like three hundred years into the future we’d either have come a bit further or severely regressed, not just kind of stayed in a similar place as far as attitudes towards different sexualities and races.
But keeping those attitudes somewhat similar to now probably does give this a relevancy for the intended young audience, giving them a character whose struggles some of them may identify with, and making a kid feel less alone is never a bad thing for a book to do.
I’m not the biggest action fan in the world, emotion tends to stand out more for me, so my favorite aspect of this book was the family, in particular the arc of the relationship between these brothers, the ups and downs of their attempts to reconnect, I thought that played out at a believable pace.
Thank you to Book Publicity Services and the author for the copy of this book to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Pirates' Pact: A Kik and Mac Adventure is a middle grade tale that features two twin brothers who grapple with their individual identities, their relationship, and growing up. The setting is New Earth, a future version of our planet, that the author builds out first in a previous series of science fiction books. Pirates' Pact is a chance for the younger generation to have an adventure, and younger readers would commiserate with Kik and Mac dealing with their various siblings, their military commander mother, and the local bullies.
I enjoyed seeing the two boys grow their self-confidence, and have a treasure hunt adventure to find missing gold and gems. The book is light on actual pirates, but there are plenty of hijinks and exploits to keep the plot active. The larger messages of the book (the value of family, how treasure can be more than physical things) is great for kids and comes across clearly.
I had a few struggles with the story. There are several names that begin with the same letters and/or are similar, and it was confusing at times. I also felt lost having not read the previous books in this world; while the author provides a simple introduction, it doesn't give the reader enough to understand who all the other characters are, or why they matter.
I received a copy of A Pirates’ Pact: A Kik & Mac Adventure by Sarah Branson from @BookPublicityServices in exchange for an honest review. All opinions ARRR my own. 🏴☠️
Ahoy, mateys! Can you imagine living on a pirate island only to be told there’s no treasure left to find? Shiver me timbers—would you believe it?
This swashbuckling adventure follows twin brothers Kik and Mac, who are as different as calm seas and stormy waters. When they discover a hidden treasure map in their home, they make a pirate’s pact to search for the treasure on their own—no crew allowed! Impulsive Mac tends to steer them straight into trouble, but Kik’s quick thinking (and a little help from their sister) helps them chart a course back to safety.
Their journey is filled with mystery, mischief, and heart as they follow clues, brave sticky situations, and strengthen their brotherly bond along the way. This story is a true treasure trove of adventure, friendship, and courage.
With its classic feel and sense of discovery, it gave me the same adventurous spirit as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Anchors Aweigh for a fun, fast-paced read that will have young readers ready to grab their maps and set sail!
⚓️ A sea-riously fun adventure for young pirates and landlubbers alike!
While the story is set in a fictional world, the author creates a picture in the reader’s head of locations which are real enough to connect but far enough away to dream of a different world. I loved the realistic disagreements between the brothers. I believe children would appreciate feeling validated and understood, seeing themselves in the characters. One of the characters is dealing with a few ‘big’ feelings - feelings of loneliness and doubt. I worry that both of the issues he is dealing with (spoiler alert - homosexuality and racism) were touched on just enough to be present but not enough to be dealt with, leaving a parent to deal with answering some questions they may not be prepared to answer without reading the book. I don’t think it is enough to avoid the book, but just something to be aware of. Overall, I enjoyed their adventure and look forward to sharing with others.
Author Sarah Branson has built a world called New Earth. It's the same planet we live on but we've jumped to the 2300s to meet twins Kik and Mak, and their family and friends. Around the table their parents joke about a pirate's tale from the past but the twins have stumbled upon a piece of the original map! Will they team up to find the rest of the map and possibly the treasure? Branson masterfully brings you into their world and takes you along on the adventurous quest. Navigating their own adolescence, from school to new friends to parents' expectations, middle grade readers will identify with Kik and Mak and root for their success. I thank Book Publicity Services for the free copy and look forward to sharing this story with our community.
Synopsis: Set 300 years into the future, twin brothers happen upon a hidden secret and embark on an adventure of a lifetime.
My thoughts: 💭 This is a short adventure full of surprises. 💭 It explores brotherly bonds, family dynamics, and self-discovery. 💭 I think the brotherly arguing between Kik and Mac will be very relatable for young readers. 💭I liked that it provided reader discussion questions at the end.

Twin brothers, Kik and Mac, find themselves drifting apart from each other in a world that is 300 years in the future (but is not too different from our world today). They find part of a treasure map and embark on an epic adventure.
I enjoyed the short story, but found myself getting caught up by the writing. There were some details thrown in that seemed a little random and unnecessary. The beginning was a bit slow for me, but the ending was enjoyable.
I enjoyed getting to know the brothers and how their relationship evolved over the course of the story.
Language: jerk, crap, jackass
Representation: one character comes out as being gay

The book took me to the pirate island of Bosch, where twin brothers embarked on a treasure hunt. And this adventure helped them find something even more valuable – the lost connection between two brothers.
Almost eleven-year-old twins got emotionally separated from each other last years and when they accidentally found a piece of an old map and set off on a treasure hunt, the bond between the two brothers started growing again.
A Pirates' Pact is a story about the value of family bonds, understanding, being there for someone, and friendship.
This book is great for any adventure fans. It has enough action and suspense to keep audiences wanting more. The characters learn valuable lessons on their quest without even trying. The lessons include trust, importance of family and leaving their comfort zone. I highly recommend this book to all adventure fans rather you read it yourself or to a child for valuable family time.
📖 Book Review 📖 My childhood dreams of becoming a pirate did not come to fruition and I have come to terms with that. But I still love indulging in pirate reads! Sarah Branson whisks readers into a future that is hazily reminiscent of our world. And while the adventures are wild, the nature of relationships and coming of age themes are timeless and will resonate with readers of all ages. With maps, paintings, and a gripping story, A Pirate’s Pact is one swashbuckling good time.
My 8 year old daughter read this and said she loved it. It has a good story that kept her engaged in reading the book. She loved how the twins in the story were close to her age so she understood what they were up to and didn’t feel like it was babyish like some of her other chapter books.
I loved reading this book to my grandkids who love adventure they love thrill of looking for fossils and different things you don't see daily. So this book was exciting to them because it's something that there interested in and hearing adventure that the twins got in too with the mistakes and mischief.
This adventure book has kept my kids wanting to keep reading to find out what happens next. It’s the perfect blend of make believe (the story takes place in the future), to seemingly real family dynamics, the story makes you feel like you’re on the adventure with the characters. It’s been such a great read for the whole family.
Did not finish. Was sent this and on page 19 we can see a character is going to be coming out as gay in the story probably at some point. I also looked at other reviews and there are a few mild uses of language. Two things i don’t love to keep on my shelves especially for middle grade.
A Pirates Pact was a fun and adventurous tale, perfect for kids 8-12 years old. The twists and turns throughout the plot kept me wondering whether the twins would find the treasure or not. The pacing was great and the writing itself made me want to read everything else this author has written. Thank you to Book Publicity Services and the author for the gifted book. All opinions are my own and freely given.
Perfect for: Kids who love adventure tales Ages 8-12 Goonies fans
