“Sorry sweetheart, then I’m most definitely going to rape you.”
When a spiked drink makes me dazed at a work party, a kind coworker steps in to take me home. After passing out in the car, I wake in a stranger's bed, blinded by black contacts, collared, and my hands helplessly trapped in leather mittens.
A stranger tells me I'm his for the night—a man who somehow knows my depraved desires and threatens to make them all come true.
This is a dark romance novella with explicit content that may be disturbing to some readers. A full list of content warnings can be found on the author’s website.
Ella Jacobs writes dark and kinky romance. Her books all center around Dom/sub dynamics, ranging from BDSM relationships with light dub con to pitch-black captor/captive stories with Stockholm syndrome and heavy non con.
What all her stories have in common is the emotional depth that makes them feel very raw and real. They will pull at all your heartstrings, maybe gut you and shock you, and take you through the emotional wringer.
Ella lives in Northern Europe, where she has been part of the BDSM community for many years. She lives her own age-gap romance with a stern, loving Dominant, who is always ready for some character analysis and rarely gets jealous when she falls in love with her fictional men.
Besides writing, Ella loves to play music and travel.
I want to start by saying I’m a dark romance girlie with zero triggers through and through; but this wasn’t it. Maybe I missed the mark on this one and it’s just me I dunno 🤷♀️
Not only did this man use her words as weapons against her while admitting he could tell she had zero experience with dom/sub etc, but he butchered her after care and left this woman an absolute emotional disaster cause “she might call the cops”. A shower hose and rubber gloves?! Just no.
Ella Jacobs has a new story out,and even though it’s a short one,it sure packs a punch! It has a couple of triggers that might be too much for some, but were right up my alley. Having read the ARC,the only thing i didn’t like about it,was that it was over too soon…. I would’ve loved to hear more!!
His in the Darkness is Sarah’s story,a sweet girl who hasn’t found mr. Right yet. She dreams about a certain type of man,but isn’t sure she’d actually like to meet him…. When the firm she works at has a night out,her besties try to convince her to have the same drinks they do,but she declines. She has to work extra the next day and needs a clear head…..so why is she feeling so drowsy after that last cola??? The help she receives from a coworker turns out to be something else, and when she wakes up it’s in the dark….with someone who knows about her dreams…. What will he do? Will she be able to escape? AND. WHO. IS. HE???
As expected from Ella this one was dark, in more sense than one 🤭 Depraved, debauchery with all the non con, D/s and restraints to assist the assailant. And I cannot lie, I totally enjoyed it 🖤⛓️ READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS ⛔️
It’s a short novella exploring our FMCs fantasies without her consent, as she write stories on her work computer…seems a tad stupid thing to do but ya’ know it’s fiction 🤣
I’m so glad Ella is making this into a full book, so we can see Sarah grow into her submissive side.
I swallow hard. "It's just a fantasy. I don't want any of that in real life." "Are you sure about that?" "Yes. It's like rape fantasies. Most women have them. That doesn't mean they want to be raped."
i need this to be a full length book. 😭 i loved the mystery element and how this stranger helped fulfill her darkest fantasy. i literally finished this in 20 mins and i need more lol
This was a quick and spicy read with some very interesting scenes 👀 it had some stuff in it that I’ve never encountered before but I was definitely intrigued 👀
The FMC ends up having to live out the fantasies she normally just writes about on her work computer. She never expects them to actually happen, but one night, her BDSM fantasy comes to life. I loved how dark, filthy, and just straight-up hot this novella was. The entire story takes place over that one night between the FMC and MMC, so if you’re looking for plot, this isn’t the book for you. But if you’re in the mood for pure, unapologetic smut, this one delivers on every level.
Short and Spicy and I absolutely ate it up. Can't say it would everyone's cup of tea but as someone who enjoys some good fiction dripping with spice, this was a winner. The only thing I can say I was upset about was how fast it ended. The final line......It left me wanting more. Solid quick read, I'm glad to have come across it.
This is a quick DARK read and I’m 100% here for it! I want more! It’s so good and 🥵 but in all seriousness if you have triggers PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check the TW/CW or ask me, because this isn’t for everyone… But oh man it was so good! I want more
This just wasn't it for me. I don't think I was the target audience despite my lack of triggers. Although the trigger list should definitely be checked before picking this book up.
This book is dark romance and so freaking good I devoured it! Ella write the darkest books and the craziest psychos I cannot wait for more of her writing. This novella is going to be free in her website. Please read the Triggers Warning.
I really enjoyed this novella alot. I’ve read Ella’s novel, In His Cage before this and I adore how she writes her MMC’s. They’re dark, compelling and methodical. I think physical violence is easy to have in books, right? But having your characters psychologically get inside their love interests heads and f*ck them up in there is something I love. To me, it takes way more skill to achieve that and it makes the characters even more terrifying. His In The Darkness is no different. The MMC’s cruelty is his kindness in this story which I thought was brilliant.
BUT, as much as I enjoyed this, I do not agree with calling this a dark romance. I think it’s setting readers up for an expectation that’s not being met here whatsoever. There is so HEA or HFN, it ends on a dark cliff hanger so I only recommend this to readers who enjoy erotic suspense/erotic horror/unsatisfying endings.
MAKE SURE your checking the CW if you decide to read this bc there is definitely some heavy/potentially triggering moments with the verbiage he uses as well as situations. It’s a good story/concept, so I’m curious if this will be an ongoing series of novellas w/ these two or if this will be the only book..🧐
This is a quick insanely spicy dark read, all about the FMC who is sweet Sarah who falls victim to a spiked drink then encounters a man in the dark who wants to fulfill all her dirty desires while she is restrained AND collared to a bed in a place she doesn’t know….. the rest is 🥵🔥🖤
‘His in the Darkness’ promises a dark and intense romance, but it falls a little short of its potential. While the premise is intriguing, the execution lacks the depth and tension needed to truly immerse the reader.
Plot: ★★★☆☆ The story has an interesting foundation, but it doesn’t quite deliver on the darkness and intensity that the title suggests. The pacing is decent, but the stakes never feel quite high enough, and the tension that should drive the narrative forward feels underdeveloped. There are some strong moments, but overall, it lacks the edge that would make it truly gripping.
Character: ★★★☆☆ Sarah is relatable in some ways, but her characterisation feels a bit one-dimensional. While her motivations make sense, she doesn’t experience enough development throughout the story, making her journey feel somewhat stagnant. The love interest is intriguing but lacks the depth needed to make him compelling. The chemistry between them is present, but it doesn’t have the emotional weight to make it truly stand out.
Setting: ★★★☆☆ The world-building is minimal, and the setting doesn’t feel immersive. While there are hints of atmosphere, it isn’t deeply explored, leaving much to be desired in terms of mood and ambience. For a book that leans into a darker romance theme, a more vividly painted setting would have added so much more to the experience.
Engagement: ★★★☆☆ While the book is easy enough to read, it doesn’t fully hook you in. There are engaging moments, but they don’t build the level of suspense or anticipation that would make this an unputdownable read. The lack of deeper emotional stakes makes it feel a bit flat in places.
Readability: ★★★★☆ The writing style is smooth, and the book is easy to follow. It flows well, but at times, the lack of tension makes it feel slower than it should.
Enjoyment: ★★★☆☆ While ‘His in the Darkness’ has some enjoyable elements, it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity. If you’re looking for a dark romance with deep, intense emotions, this one might not fully satisfy. However, if you prefer a lighter take on the genre, it could be a decent read.
‘His in the Darkness’ has potential, but it doesn’t quite deliver the depth, tension, or emotional intensity expected from a dark romance. While the characters and plot have promise, they could have been developed further to create a more immersive and gripping experience. It’s an okay read, but it doesn’t stand out in the genre.
Sinister, seductive, and addictively twisted—His In The Darkness by Ella Jacobs is a dark romance novella that flirts with danger while keeping you turning the pages. If you’re new to her work, this is a quick but impactful introduction that hints at the delicious darkness she’s capable of crafting.
✨ Tropes: Dom/Sub Dynamic: Control and surrender take center stage. Hidden Identity: The mystery of the MMC adds layers of intrigue. Captor/Captive: A dangerous game of power, desire, and shifting trust. Praise & Degradation Kinks: A complex blend of push and pull.
This novella reads like the “Fifty Shades of Grey” of dark romance—tame enough to dip your toes into the genre, but still twisted enough to leave your heart racing. Ella Jacobs doesn’t shy away from dark themes, but keeps it digestible for readers who want to explore the shadows without being fully submerged in pitch black.
For a short read, it delivers a punch. The pacing is tight, the chemistry is palpable, and there’s just enough edge to leave you curious about what else this author has hidden in the dark.
This book is heavily written with BDSM , so if you have any triggers towards this subject please read with caution. I throughly enjoyed this novella & how the Dom pursued his little submissive in hiding. He works on another floor within the building, but the same company & he has his eyes set on the beautiful Sarah. She writes filthy little stories on her work computer & when a drowsy night at the bar leads her in the bed of a man that brings those stories to real life… she finds herself submitting to shadow of the man that brings all her fantasies to real life. There first night together was pretty intense, but afterward was definitely needed & wanted on both ends, especially in the filing room & warehouse. I loved the storyline, but I wish there was more at the ending. I kind got the hint of whom the mystery man was, but I would have loved to see him reveal himself to her fully. Overall this was a good novella with some great BDSM scenes!
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "HIS IN THE DARKNESS" I thoroughly enjoyed this intriguing, suspense filled story full of danger, fear, kidnapping, depraved desires, you can't put the book down. Sarah, Marie & Rosa are having drinks & giving her a hard time for not relaxing, Sarah likes Matthew from work & their teasing her. Sarahs coke was spiked she feels very tired & tells the girls she's calking it night both Rosa & Marie asks if shes ok. Sarah ends up being taken & ends up naked in a bed & can't see right because of black contacts, she's also tied to the bed, with a collar around her neck. Sarah sees a man in a chair & starts to panic cause she can't see properly because of the black contacts, he tells Sarah she's his for the night. Will Sarah figure out who has her in this situation its a little twisted but deep down it makes her hot, its a must read you dont want to miss to see what happens.
A gripping dark romance that lingers long after you finish the last page. His in the Darkness by Ella Jacobs is a dark, twisted, and emotionally charged romance that pulls you deep into the shadows from the very first page. The author masterfully blends danger, desire, and redemption, creating a story that feels both haunting and addictive. The chemistry between the main characters is intense—equal parts raw passion and psychological tension. Ella Jacobs doesn’t shy away from exploring the darker sides of love, trust, and control, yet she balances it with moments of vulnerability that make the characters unforgettable. What stands out most is the atmosphere—dark, sensual, and filled with suspense. Every chapter leaves you questioning who you can trust, and every secret revealed hits like a gut punch. It’s not a light read, but for fans of dark romance with depth, emotion, and an edge of danger, this one is an absolute must. I received an ARC copy and this is my honest review.
Ella Jacobs, my dark romance queen, once again I had the honor of ARC reading your work, and yeah. It was good. Great. Spectacular. Ellas writing style is so raw, addictive and real. Everything feels so authentic, and yes of course it’s quite hard to read a times. Ellas books are very dark romances, with lots of trigger warnings, so it’s not gonna be for everyone. But I really enjoy these, and that’s coming from someone that usually goes for the cute and sweet romance books. This is mostly thanks to the emotional display, it has so much depth, and truly explore what it means to be a submissive. Both the good and the bad. The power dynamics, how a good dom/sub relationship is supposed to be, and how wrong it can go if it isn’t. The only negative thing I have to say about this novella, is that I wanted it to be longer. I want more! 😅
I read this steaming hot Dark romance story on a train ride, which turned out to be a huge mistake. As the plot quickly started to unfold, I found myself Increasingly turned on, which was very frustrating, as I could do nothing about it! Hoping my fellow passengers didnt notice my blushing cheeks and uneasy sitting, I followed Sarahs erotic journey, as she (un)willingly succumbs to her deepest and darkest desires.
This short story is filled to the brim with everything a Dark romance fan could wish for: Forbidden desires, submission, sensory deprivation, orgasm denial, and a mysterious stranger. It also makes the reader ponder the essential question of consent, and raises the provocative question: Is it rape if the victim willingly shows up?
The moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for!
This was a totally new trope for me. Still processing how exactly I feel about it.
This book is heavy on BDSM/NONCON, I strongly urge you to read the TRIGGER WARNINGS.
I enjoyed this novella but there was a few minor things that irked me (overuse of a word that makes me cringe namely).
Sarah writes her own fantasy stories on her work computer during her breaks. When a work night out leads her to the bed of a man that brings those stories to real life, she finds herself in a mental battle to fight or just go with it, after all this man is bringing all her fantasies to life.
I liked the storyline, but I wish there was more.
I really wanted to know who he was and if he was going to reveal himself to Sarah.
This is the 2nd Ella Jacobs book that I have read, and I'm addicted. I never read dark romance before finding Ella's books, and I highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before purchasing.
This particular book is short, so if you want a quick read, this a good one! By the time I was done, I was demanding more of their story. I'm hoping we'll see more of these characters in future releases.
Ella has a way of portraying the emotions of her character in a way that tugs at the heartstrings. I definitely needed tissues for this one.
There are quotes that I know I shouldn't love, but they made me shiver! This will absolutely make the re-read list!
I just finished His in the Darkness by Ella Jacobs and honestly... whew. It’s short, dark, intense, and exactly what I needed. The intensity was 🔥 from the start, and even though it’s a quick read, it didn’t feel rushed. Ella Jacobs really knows how to write tension and possessiveness in a way that feels addictive but still emotional. I loved it, and I’m already diving into more of Ella Jacobs’ work—especially after that sneak peek of Take Me at the end. If it’s anything like His in the Darkness, I know I’m in for another addictive, steamy, twisted, dark ride.
What a spicy, quick read. Sarah’s fantasies come to life quick in this novella. This is very dark so definitely check trigger warnings but I loved how real and raw the story was.
This story definitely shows a lot of a bdsm Dom/Sub relationship. I’d submit to him in a moment, not giving away any names though.
You can truly feel the emotions Sarah goes through in the book, lust, satisfaction, anxiety, and so much more.
Single POV, Stalker MMC, Workplace Romance, Trigger Warnings
Not sure how this can be considered dark romance when the MMC shows no emotional connection to the FMC, reading his version of 'aftercare' made me so uncomfortable I almost DNF the book. There is nothing in this novella that gives the reader any insight as to how he feels other than his need to completely control and dominate the FMC. This ends on a cliff hanger with many questions left unanswered.
So annoyed. Sososo annoyed. It gave off "In His Cage" vibes, also written by Ella Jacobs. (I have a love/hate relationship with that book). I didn't know this book is actually a novella when I jumped into it. I read novellas as well, but for whatever duh reason I didn't check to see if it was. When I finished the book, I was not pleased. WHYYY did it have to end that way? Please tell me there's more coming! It left me hanging, and not in a good way.
