Will Stoltz has returned to Stoney Ridge to start a wild bird rescue center and find Jackie Colombo, a veterinarian who stole his heart . . . then disappeared.
Suzanne Woods Fisher is the bestselling, award winning author of fiction and non-fiction books about the Old Order Amish for Revell Books, host of the radio-show-turned-blog Amish Wisdom, a columnist for Christian Post and Cooking & Such magazine.
Her interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, who was raised Plain. A theme in her books (her life!) is that you don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate the principles of simple living.
Suzanne lives in California with her family and raises puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To her way of thinking, you just can't life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone's underwear in its mouth.
The story was a bit rushed, but it's a novella and that's to be expected. I loved learning more about Delia's son and also enjoyed all the different bird rescues. The ending was abrupt, but sweet.
Suzanne Woods Fisher’s The Rescue is the perfect read while waiting for the upcoming release of the conclusion to the Inn at Eagle Hill series, The Revealing. This brief novella returns to Stoney Ridge and the Inn at Eagle Hill with Will Stoltz – a character I have hoped would find a happy ending ever since he left Windmill Farm in The Haven. After his momentary appearance with his mother in The Letters, Will finally returns with the intention of following his passion and the possibility of love – and learns the importance of letting control rest in God’s hands. I must admit I was a bit disappointed that the Lapps did not make more of an appearance in the story. Still, The Rescue is a sweet, delightful story, easily read in one sitting. Lovers of the Inn at Eagle Hill series should miss this novella.
Thanks to Revell and LitFuse Publicity Group, I received a complimentary digital copy of this novella and the opportunity to review it honestly.
If you have been following this series, this short novella is going to delight you, it can be read alone, a lot of facts are given, but don’t miss this amazing series! We have our intern vet that we met with the eagles back, and his passion, as you have probably guessed is rescuing birds. Will Stoltz is back, remember him from The Revealing, and he is now a full fledge Veterinarian. How he will make out with a non-profit in this small Amish town, you will love how some money does come to him. Enjoy how the Amish grapevine, gets a bit mixed up, but you will put it all together, and it is a good chuckle! My only complaint was that I wished this were a lot longer, hated to say goodbye!
I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.
I loved this novella. A sweet touching story of nature (birds) and their care. A son and a young amish boy learn some lessons in life. It is also a tender touching story about putting God first and not letting anything else come first. You will really love this story , I hope you will give it a read. It was my own personal bedtime story last night ! Linda
Will Stoltz is a veterinarian who returns to Stoney Ridge to open the Stoney Ridge Wild Bird Rescue Center in Pennsylvania because he loves birds and wants to rekindle his romance with fellow veterinarian Jackie Colombo. Will stays at the Inn in Eagle Hill owned by Rose Schrock’s family. Will forms a bond with Rose’s son Luke. Stoney Ridge is the place where his mother healed her broken body and his parent’s mended their marriage at the Inn in Eagle Hill. The building that he has leased is in shambles and he is low on funds and Jackie is nowhere to be found. Will makes attempts to rescue an injured eagle near Eagle Hill Inn to prove to his father that his goals are not in vain. Can Will learn to trust God for guidance in his life? I really enjoyed this delightful short-story contemporary Christian romance novella.
This story was so great… I really wished it was a full-size novel. I’m sure Suzanne could have done it. But it was fun reading about Will Stoltz… at Stoney Ridge.
Poor Will… he soon realizes he made his decision to settle in Stoney Ridge based on the idea of finding the young vet he had connected with before, but she wasn’t to be found. Then young Luke hears that she’s been shot in the stomach 15 times!
I won’t go on so I don’t spoil the story for you (but the above paragraph is absolutely true)! Since this is an ebook, you can read it immediately if you buy it and download it to your iPhone, tablet or computer. I know you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
Love this series and I want more! There could be so many stories to follow each character. This particular short story seems to end too quickly. Yes, he finds the girl but what happens later? The story line begins but only leaves you feeling questioning what happens next. The last book in the series doesn't answer your questions either. Ms. Fisher is an excellent author and i love reading her books. I wish she would write one more in the series and give us the happy (and sometimes comical) ending we want.
4 stars I purchased a copy of the short story The Rescue by Suzanne Woods Fisher and this review was given freely. This is the story of Delia Stoltz's son William's move to Stoney Bridge to start a Bird refugee with the help of 11 year old Luke Schrock and William's quest to find Jackie, the vet he has come to care for. scenes of everyday life and problems are woven in between scenes of rescuing birds.
A new career, hoping to find the love he is searching for, helping a 11 year on boy find peace after losing his Father and finding God along the way. His life had been laid out for him, a Neuro surgeon to follow in his Dad's footsteps but that did not happen. After spending time in an animal reserve his career changed to being a Vet. Read this book and follow this young man's dream.
When you put God's love above all else, life is better, as Will finds out. He was in a bind, not knowing where the center or he, was going to get money to survive. When he turned it all over to god, his life changed in all areas.
It was delightful. I wish it was a complete book! I always enjoy books by Suzanne Woods Fisher. She develops her characters very well. I recommend all her books.👍
I've not read any others in this series and was surprised to find this so short. But I enjoyed it as I had been in a book funk. I will look into reading the rest of the series.
“He's taking a chance on love . . . and there's no plan B. Will Stoltz has returned to Stoney Ridge with a clear plan. He's opening a wild bird rescue center and is determined to rekindle his fizzled romance with Jackie Colombo, the veterinarian who stole his heart. But nothing is working out as Will planned. The leased building for the rescue center is a disaster, his funding is rapidly dwindling, and Jackie Colombo has disappeared without a trace. When an injured eagle is found in a pasture near the Inn at Eagle Hill, Will is desperate to prove to himself, to his skeptical father, and to everyone else that his mission has not been in vain. But as his best-laid plans begin to fail, Will discovers something more valuable.”
Series: Here’s the tricky thing, Goodreads says it’s Book #0.5 in “The Inn at Eagle Hill” series, (This is considered a novella) so I read this one before book #1, “The Letters”, {Review Here!} and sadly, it gave most of the first book away so I would recommend to read this book after “The Letters”. :)
Spiritual Content- Will says he believes in God but was afraid that God might change him and make him do things he doesn’t want to do; Rose tells Will about Jacob & Rachel; Will prays.
Negative Content- Birds die (no details) and one ate something poisonous (semi-detailed).
Sexual Content- Will is pretty obsessed with finding Jackie

Of course, it being a novella it was very short—this one being very, very short. Like I said the Series: Here’s the tricky thing, Goodreads says it’s Book #0.5 in “The Inn at Eagle Hill” series, (This is considered a novella) so I read this one before book #1, “The Letters”, {Review Here!} and sadly, it gave most of the book away so I would recommend to read this book after “The Letters”. :)
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. *I received this book for free from the Publisher for this review.
Don't let the cover fool you, this is not an Amish story! Yes, it is set in a predominately Amish community, but the main characters are not Amish. There's not much romance in this story, more like a pining for a blossoming romance that has gotten lost. You can tell that it is setting the stage for other books in the series, showcasing locations and people that will be important later on. This short story kept my interest better than the other book by the author that I had read, so I am looking forward to continuing the series!
6/19/15 Edit: After reading The Letters, I feel that this book should be listed as book 1.5, not 0.5. The main characters have met previously, in The Letters, and this story is the continuation of that encounter. To me, it would have made more sense had I read it after I finished The Letters.
The only complaint I have about this book was that there was not enough of it! The story was so wonderful, I was completely caught up in it and then… it was over.
~~~sad~~~
This is one of those stories you will wish you could go back and read for the first time all over again. It’s THAT GREAT!
I find myself so grateful that more and more authors understand that readers are simply in agony waiting for the next installment of their wonderful books. And so they give us short back-stories and side-stories to keep us from tearing our hair out while we wait for the next book to arrive at our local bookstore.
GOD BLESS THEM!
It is such a joy to open up my kindle and see that this eBook is available for reading.
And, as much as I LOVE having a hard copy of as many books as I can get my hands on, I am much happier to pay $1.99 for this short story that to have to pay $5 or even $10. Plus I didn’t have to do anything but find a Wi-Fi spot where I could download.
So, while you wait for Suzanne’s next book in The Inn At Eagle Hill series “The Revealing”, go to Amazon and snag this wonderful eBook. I promise it will help tide you over until you get the next book in your hands!
Return to Stoney Ridge and the Inn at Eagle Hill in the ebook novella, The Rescue by Suzanne Woods Fisher. A sweet story set in Amish country, fans of Fisher’s books will recognize favorite characters, including Luke, Rose Schrock’s mischief-loving son. The story revolves around Englisher Will Stoltz, newly licensed veterinarian, who is stepping out of his comfort zone to start a non-profit wild bird rescue center. The community welcomes him with open arms, but the future he envisioned is just not working out. Low on funds and unable to find out just what happened to Jackie, another vet he is interested in, Will realizes through the wise words and loving actions of his Amish neighbors that surrender to God is best. Other themes touched on are the relationship between fathers and sons and the sovereignty of God. If you are looking for another sweet taste of the simple life in Stoney Ridge, then definitely check out The Rescue.
Title: THE RESCUE Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher Publisher: Revell May 2014 ASIN: B00IARZY10 Genre: Novella, contemporary
Will is back at Eagle Ridge, but this time he’s finished with Vet school and ready to take on the world. There’s the girl he wants and birds to save and everything is rosy.
Until he learns his school loans are coming due, his dad won’t help with bills, and the electric company is threatening to shut off power. And the girl—she’s nowhere to be found.
Will Will learn to trust God and not trust himself? Does God even have a plan? What if Plan A fails and Plan B is nowhere to be found?
This was a short enovella – which is why I picked it up to read today. Short and sweet and distressing. In Ms. Fisher’s signature style, the story is engaging, gripping, heart-felt, and totally lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed THE RESCUE. It is short – but I knew that. And like a taste of a forbidden sweet, oh, so good.
Short but sweet. I am a bird lover and backyard bird watcher so this story touched a soft spot in my heart. It was also nice to get an update on Will Stoltz, one of the characters from book one in this series.
I was disappointed it was so very short in fact a total of 55 pages, 6775 KB. Needed to be longer.
Don't get me wrong I am not sorry I purchased this novella, I was very aware of how many pages I was buying. Love the series. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
I rated this novella 5 out of 5.
But I must give it a 3 out of 5 for the price.
Disclosure: I purchased this ebook on Amazon for my own reading pleasure.
I have read most of Suzanne Woods Fisher's books. She writes in a way that makes you feel as if you know the characters. I like that some of the characters are the same in each book. Looking forward to the next publication.
I came across this novella by chance and what a sweet story it turned out to be. It didn't take me long to turn the pages and was disappointed when I came to the last page. Ended too soon! Hope to read more by this author.
Suzanne Woods Fisher draws her reader right in. Before I knew it I was on the last page of this novella, wanting more. Sweet story and a blessing to read.
