Merciless Dragons #1

Serpents of Sky and Flame

Rate this book
Dragon captures maiden. Maiden makes dragon's life absolute hell...

At the end of a terrible war, a sorcerer casts a curse that destroys every female in the entire race of dragons. In retaliation, Kyreagan, the dragon prince, leads a raid on the sorcerer's kingdom, during which the male dragons snatch human women and carry them off to the dragons' domain. When Princess Serylla is captured by the Prince of Dragons and taken to his cave, she is furious, terrified, and determined to make his existence so miserable he'll either have to kill her or let her go.

Kyreagan's frustration with his pretty captive is compounded by the fact that his plan--to turn all the human women into female dragons--isn't working. The enchantress he kidnapped isn't powerful enough to work that spell; the most she can do is give the male dragons the ability to shift into human form for a number of hours each day.

As Serylla and the other captured women scheme for their freedom, the dragons struggle to cope with the strangeness of having human bodies for the first time. Neither side realizes that a much greater enemy is watching, waiting to destroy them all.

This spicy, adult fantasy romance is perfect for fans of Rebecca Yarros, Carissa Broadbent, LJ Andrews, and Katee Robert. Contains intense themes. Reading guidance can be found at the beginning of the book or on the author's website.

"If you're going to kill me, I have one condition."
"And what is that?"
"Kiss me first."

Are you wondering what it feels like to be kidnapped by your dragon enemy so he can get his revenge on your kind and use you to repopulate his race? Grab this book and a bottle of wine, and find out.

Considering an instagram reel about dragon dick (Leni can confirm) and my utter respect for Rebecca F. Kenney's work is what brought me here, I'm not gonna pretend I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I picked this up.
I was 100% in on the promised plot and 200% ready (cospiratorial hand-rubbing included) to be swept away by one very sexy dragon shifter romance.
And I was, kinda.
Unfortunately, and for a reason I can't really pinpoint, for a RFK book, this seemed to lack a certain finesse I usually find in her novels.
The writing is of course as exquisite as ever, but I couldn't help but think both the romance and the main characters weren't as well defined as I expected. The plot didn't drag, but I feel like that's partly thanks to it not being too complicated.
Overall, this was fine and had its moments, but I can definitely admit it wasn't a favorite.

4 Dragon Egg Stars ⭐️
Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️.5/5

If I have to sum up this book in one word... it is FUN!
I recently explained to some friends that reading a Rebecca F Kenney book to me is like coming home. It is that comfort that you find knowing you're going to get what you love. You just know it's going to be good, a breath of fresh air and no matter what, you're going to enjoy it.

This was no exception! Whilst it was new territory for me, as I have never read anything Monster Romance, it still kept me intrigued, captivated and enticed! I had no idea what to expect so it was a FUN Ride (literally on the back of a Fire Breathing Dragon)

This is a Dual POV that is told from Kyreagan and Serylla's views. Kyreagan is the eldest dragon prince of the Oureskelle land. He teamed up with the King of Vohrain to overthrow the Elekstan nation in exchange for new land. The Dragons succeed in winning the war but a terrible spell cast by the Elekstan Sorcerer kills all the female dragons, right before the Dragon Mating season which only happens every 25 years. So Kyreagan devises a plan to steal women from Elekstan to save his nation. He happens to capture Serylla who happens to be the princess of Elekstan and she vows to make Kyreagans life a living hell.

The worldbuilding in this is pretty simple and easy to understand, which helps because this is a very fast-paced story showcasing the delicate dance of enemies to lovers. There is ACTUAL DRAGON DANCING!!!

Serylla is an interesting and unexpected character. More at home in the palace kitchens with the maids than on a future thrown, she often comes off as naive, childish and sheltered - through no fault of her own, given how cloistered the queen kept her. But underneath this is a rebel who loves music and seeks passion in her life. While she does not always understand the world, she is kind and generous and has a need to try.

Kyregan is primal and animalistic, his thoughts are often blunt, simplified but why wouldn't they be considering he is a DRAGON? He is quick to anger, has a fiery temper and can be explosive when angry. His tone gives off power. He is also regal and just trying to be the best ruler he can be even if it feels like all his recent choices are mistakes.

I enjoyed that based on their thoughts it was so easy to know whose mind or POV you were in based on how they think and act. I also loved that it felt like the two of them were speaking a different language to each other and that they considered the other stupid because they didn't understand the customs and culture of their respective races.

It was just cute to see how these two enemies could overcome their differences, find common ground and work together. I devoured this incredibly quickly (If I was a dragon, it might have been in one gulp) - which is a testament to how good it is.

The one aspect that was weird for me, and this is entirely my preference...is I don't normally read books with a breeding/pregnancy kink. I know this often comes in books found in the Omegaverse and Monster Romance - this was unchartered territory for me. I was not used to the typical mating frenzy that could occur and that primal need to procreate. BUT even though this was strange new territory for me - I still enjoyed it (and I typically dislike pregnancy books).

The Cliffhanger was absolutely brutal. I panicked when I looked down and saw I was 95% done and it felt like I was just getting to the good part. Rebecca really pulled my heart out with that end and I am FERAL for the next one.

Trope Summary:
▶ Beauty and The Beast Vibes
▶ Captor/Captive
▶ Enemies to Lovers
▶ 7 Brides for 7 Brothers
▶ Monster Romance
▶ Light Primal CNC
▶ Breeding Kink
▶ Mine

If you want something fun, lighthearted and spicy that is going to give you your kick, whether you like traditional fantasy romance, monster romance, omega verse, or just anything... this is the book for you. You will lap it up and enjoy the kick out of it!

Thank you Rebecca F Kenney for my gifted ARC copy.

I hated this, im definitely not the audience for this book
I had such high expectations cuz i adore some of Rebecca's books but this... Ew honestly

Shes so annoying and spoiled (its supposedly an act but her inner dialogue is spoiled so youre not tricking me princess) and mean too

Hes kinda naive, impulsive (i didn't hate him or even dislike him, he just fell flat) but he does have a bunch of funny moments so ill give him that

The book is too sexual, like way too sexual in a way that doesn't make sense. No. You're not convincing me that a bunch of women started to think dragons are hot in a matter of days, noone is that horny. Books like this that ive read are usually super slow burn (which makes seeeeense) it wouldve cost nothing to the story to have it happen through a few months. Also the princess is basically a virgin (two quickies cmon) but is super open sexually and crude -wouldnt make sense for an average woman, but for a princess? Less and less

And the breeding kink is so disgusting like EWWWWWWWW NIGHTMARE wdym she birthed fucking eggs?? A one week pregnancy??? The stretch marks???? Ew ew ew
And that scene when hes a dragon in heat? Bro im disgusted. I just feel like you need to leave some things to the imagination yanno?? You don't have to explain or show every little thing, some problems are better left unsolved. I was cringing 70% of the time 😰

This could've been good. But it wasn't.

DROPPED.
They were so many mixed reviews, I wanted to give this story the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sorry, I tried, I couldn't. Such a waste of a beautiful cover.

THE CHARACTERS WERE SO RIDICULOUS - as if written by a child! Story also reminded me of a badly scripted parody porno😂😂 And this is a first for me. When I see other reviewers bashing authors with the same accusation, I thought they were mean. Now, I understood. By no means am I criticizing the author's efforts. The writing was fine, except the characters were indeed....immature, child-like and rather...ODD. It's like stepping into an alternate reality of Narnia or Alice in Wonderland because nothing makes sense.

The heroine was the worse. Endlessly spoilt despite claiming it to be a charade to annoy the dragon...she didn't have a lick of common sense, and her actions were kinda...dumb. I can see now why her mother controlled every aspect of her life, because I'm certain the FMC couldn't even wipe her own ass after visiting the loo - THAT'S THE FIRST BAD IMPRESSION. And some parts of the story were comically clinical, but utterly ridiculous. For example, the heroine spreading her legs wide open while naked to give the dragon man an educational overview of what a human woman's genitals look like. DID THE AUTHOR SERIOUSLY JUST WROTE THAT?! LMAO!! I didn't know if I wanted to laugh or cry!

Anyways, keep your expectations extremely low. The prince and princess of this story were severely flawed and...naive. They didn't have any sense for politics, and it's a miracle they didn't bring their entire race down with their silliness. Don't expect strong, kickass or God forbid, any lick of intelligence in this very smutty story. What a shame!! It could have been an amazing enemies-to-lovers dragon kidnapping romance, but sadly, it was absolutely RIDON-CULOUS!

4.75 ⭐️ 4🌶️ firstly, thank you so so much Rebecca for the early read of this! i still can’t believe that this is real life and i get to take up on opportunities like this. the last page came and i kept scrolling like wait… i wasnt ready for that to be the end 😭 omg i cant wait for book 2! i really enjoyed this, a fantasy romance but with a side of monster romance. this would be a great book for someone to start off in the monster romance genre, it wasn’t too heavy. i absolutely love the mmc. i’m looking forward to reading about the other characters that we saw in this one, in future books. i loved that this felt like an Ice Planet Barbarians story but with dragons and an overall plot that is more complex. i love when an mmc just worships the hell out of their woman. there was a cliffy at the end but all it really did was have me wanting the next installment of this series sooner than later!! Rebecca really knows how to immerse you in her stories and worlds, this didn’t let me down in any way. a beautiful world, with heartfelt characters and a TRUE enemies to dubious lovers(i’m hoping this changes to absolute lovers🥲). y’all aren’t gonna want to miss this one! this is not another Fourth Wing, or your usual dragon themed romantasy, this is something completely and wonderfully different all on its own. i do want to add that this does have a breeding kink trope, i know some people don’t do well with those so id thought id slip that in my review. although Rebecca did a fantastic job of writing this trope, i absolutely loved!

2.5 stars rounded up (Because, technically, there wasn't anything wrong with it...it just wasn't my jam.)
Soooooo, I have mixed opinions and/or feelings on this book. On one hand it was engaging because it kept me interested and I finished it. Rather quickly, might I add. It was thoroughly edited without any noticeable errors. BUT, while reading it, I often felt,

coupled with frequent moments of this,

So much of it was crude and got dangerously close to "gross" territory for me. Let's just say that all the way up to the first half of it (50% mark) the MMC is still a dragon. After which, he is only in human form some of the time. And if I tried not to take that particular aspect of the content too seriously, then it came across as just cringe. There was also the matter of feeling like I was being preached to nonstop. I mean, I don't care even if I agree with an author on social issues or political disputes, I DO NOT want their opinions preached to me in a fictional fantasy book about DRAGONS!

We had issues of same sex "mating", polyamory, transgender, my body my choice, women's rights to nonchalant hookups.... I mean, like I said, even if I AGREE with someone's stance, I do not want it weaseled into my fictional reading material. I would go to a political or social justice forum if that's what I wanted to partake in. However, most of the time, I read to get away from all the bullshit conflict of today's society and it feels like a betrayal when it's still coming up there as well. So at least I'm going to do my civil duty to let any potential readers know that you will most certainly encounter all of that if you attempt to read this book.

On a whole, now that I've read this book in its entirety, I can't say that I really enjoyed it overall. There just weren't enough payoffs to make up for where it faltered. With that said, I cannot say in good conscience that I would recommend this book to anyone. Is there probably an audience for it? Sure, but I don't think I belong to it, so take that for what you will. This book ends on a cliffhanger and the second book will be released in September of this year. I doubt I'll give that one a go, though.

Steam: skipped it so I'm not going to classify but I skipped a lot so a lot of spice.
Triggers: kidnapping, violence, fear of r*pe
Love Triangle: No
Cheating:   No
HEA: No

In a war they didn't really want to fight, a spell is cast against the dragons, all their females are now dead.

In an act of desperation, Kyreagan, leader of the dragons, kidnaps the princess (and other women from the city) to replace the women they lost.

They also kidnap a witch and force her to cast a spell that turns the kidnapped women into dragons... But let's just say the spell doesn't go so well...

How did... this... get such a gorgeous cover?

I thought I was prepared. I really did. This is not the first RFK book I've picked up, I've seen some of the reviews and teasers for this series. I THOUGHT...

I was wrong. So, so very wrong.

I realllllly don't think I've ever read anything as absurd, annoying, gross and un-sexy as this book. The way Serylla gives Kyreagan MULTIPLE anatomy lessons on human genitals had me dying of cringe.

It's clinical in the worst way. I feel like this whole story was written by AI.

It doesn't help that the ENTIRE story revolves around sex. Around mating, breeding, whatever. Here I was hoping there'd be at least A LITTLE actual plot.

It doesn't help that there is absolutely zero character growth or emotional bond or chemistry between these two characters, too. It's like watching two Old Navy mannequins try to figure out how to have sex with each other.

It all happens over the span of DAYS. You mean to tell me that MULTIPLE women get kidnapped from their homes by monstrous DRAGONS, told they're going to be changed into dragons themselves for the purpose of BREEDING, only the men all become hot huge-dicked humans instead, and they're all just "oh, wait nevermind, I'll tap that." ????? C'mon. There would have been NOTHING wrong with making this a slowburn.

Serylla' is annoying as hell. And I don't mean because she is TRYING to be.

She's kidnapped from her home, vows to become the most annoying little shit imaginable (and she succeeds), then... because she's maybe horny for some reason????...lets this huge ass fire breathing dragon lick her to orgasm.

But then goes right back to hating him!

Only to rescue him from some weird worm thing (all I could imagine was the thing from Tremors, help). And then kisses him as soon as he turns human for the first time.

But she's still totally gonna get around to running away. Eventually. Because she so totally hates him and his kind and what they planned to do with the womenfolk they captured. Yep, uh-huh. Sure.

But only after he fucks her about 100 times.

Fucking weird man.

The mating heat was straight up ludicrous, too. I don't think I've EVER read about a woman koala-hugging a dragon's dick to completion. I just kept picturing those people on Nickelodeon getting covered in green slime?

Just, ya'know?

How the fuck am I supposed to take this shit seriously?

Oh god, I hope it wasn't neon green.
Actually, wait. Yes I do. That'd be hilarious.

I'm sorry was this supposed to be hot? Romantic? Am I supposed to be rooting for these idiots to fall in love? Whoops.

Lastly, I have learned--definitively--that the breeding kink is NOT my thing.

What do you mean human women give birth to EGGS? What do you mean it only takes a week? What do you mean stretchmarks?! (that's not how skin works, either, by the way. If she expanded that fast she would have ripped open. But whatever.) EW!

Seriously what the fuck did I read?

I'm not going to say I'm disappointed. This was too goddamned absurd and I laughed too hard. I'm sure this story will appeal to ... somebody. Though, bet that if you 5 star this, I'm NEVER taking any of your book recommendations.

I received an eARC in exchange for my honest review. I was ecstatic to read this book; the story sounded amazing, the cover was beautiful, and it was compared to Fourth Wing in several graphics that I saw on Instagram. It pains me to say it, but friends, this is no Fourth Wing. It has dragons, and that’s the end of the comparison. This is 100% a monster romance. I tend to leave spoiler-free reviews, but I feel like there’s no way to justify my rating here without spoilers. So, here’s your spoiler warning and caution to not read any further if you want to avoid spoilers.

First, the MMC is not a dragon shifter, he’s an actual dragon with NO human form, and the first sexual encounter occurs in his 100% dragon form. He becomes a shifter later in the book after a witch curses the dragon race to have a human form for a few hours per day. There’s sexual encounters with the human form, and then we’re back to more sexual encounters with the human FMC while the MMC is in dragon form. Quite honestly, this particular scene is repulsive. Also, this entire time the MMC is falling in love with the FMC, and all she wants to do is have sex with him.

In the end, she gets pregnant for 7 days and lays dragon eggs. She decides to abandon him and the eggs while he’s out of the cave, but she gets kidnapped instead. That’s the cliffhanger. So a lot of this is probably personal preference, but I just absolutely could not enjoy this book. It gave me major ick and I felt incredibly dirty and nauseated while reading it. The only reason I pushed through is because it was an arc and I saw the other raving reviews. The writing style and world building is good, though, so that’s where it earned two stars.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

A bit spicy at the end there and of course a cliffhanger. luckily I also bought the second book from judging the cover... I did enjoy the lore... I just wish there was more on it... so hoping book two will be more than book one... it was basically the two arguing with each other the whole time.

I went into this book with NO idea what to expect. What I got was Ice Planet Barbarians with dragons. Having never read any of Rebecca’s books, for some reason I assumed this was going to be a very serious fantasy and was so pleasantly surprised to find it the perfect mix of high-stakes drama, heated passion, and humor. The story follows Kyreagan, a dragon prince, and Serylla, a human princess, as they struggle to see eye-to-eye following a war between their species. I’m a desperate attempt to save the dragon race, Kyreagan orders his people to kidnap human females but he soon comes to question his decision when he realizes humans are not the submissive beings he assumed they would be. With the future of dragonkind at stake, Kyreagan must learn the ways of humans if he has any hope of convincing Serylla to help him. Once I got into this book I absolutely DEVOURED it. You won’t be able to put this down!

I probably shouldn’t have enjoyed this as much as i did. It was fun and made me giggle, both from the sheer disbelief at what i was reading and because the interactions between human and dragon trying to understand each other’s cultures was very cute.

I received this as part of Bookish & Spice’s romantasy subscription and the edition is simply stunning - which motivated me to read it before some of my other options.

Heads up it did end on an annoying cliffhanger. I’m keen to find out what happens though and while this book isn’t doing anything groundbreaking it was a lot of fun. A notable aspect I liked was that she was the experienced one.

If you’ve ever read book with a big strong cool scary dragon. Or watched a movie or a tv show with dragons… and you never once thoughts… even just a tiny bit… why he kinda…. You’re a liar. And this one’s for you.

This story follows Serylla. She is a princess living in the capital. Her mother the queen, has sheltered her from much of the truth of life… not involving her in politics, but keeping her in the mundane court life of royalty.

A neighboring kingdom has declared war and they are attacking the capital. They have formed an alliance with the dragons… but even with such terrible odds, the queen will not stand down. The only trick up their sleeve is a magical spell by the Supreme Sorcerer. The spell is so strong, he perishes immediately after casting it. But what the spell does, is take down every female dragon. On the battlefield all the females fall and the male dragons fly home with grief in their hearts and revenge on their minds.

When the dragons return, their act of revenge is to steal the daughters of their enemies, and take the human females back to their kingdom.

The dragon Prince Kyreagan takes Princess Serylla to his nest. The plan is to use a sorcerer to turn the human females into dragons, so that the dragon species does not die out.

They do locate a sorcerer…. And she does cast a spell…. But it does not go as plan. Instead of turning the females…. The sorcerer cast a spell so that the dragon males… become shifters. Half human…. Half dragon….

And when I tell you…. the rest of the book is you just swooning, screaming, and blushing the entire time. I mean it.

This story deals with grief and loss and it’s depicted very beautifully and sensitively.

And then at the same time the book is laugh out loud funny to the point my cheeks hurt.

The characters go through such pain and they endure so much hardship but there’s so much love and tenderness too.

This truly is the dragon version of Ice Planet Barbarians and I couldn’t be more in love with it.

There’s a scene where Serylla is giving Kyreagan a human anatomy lesson and I swear I laughed so hard I was choking.

This book is pure indulgence, it’s guilty pleasure fantasy at its finest.

I read the book in one sitting. Even with its incredible world building and the layout of this and future books in the series, it’s so easy to understand and it’s an incredibly fun ride.

The enemies to lovers aspect is an absolute delight.

There’s a scene where the dragon males keep coming to their prince for questions and guidance about their human’s strange requests and needs and it’s so funny and adorable they are so confused it’s so sweet I could scream!

There’s a great amount of character growth that’s incredible to witness and makes you so proud to be on the journey with these characters.

There’s a chase. There’s a scene where they need to shelter together and need body heat for warmth…. One of the most superior tropes out there.

There’s great representation of panic attacks and it’s so sweet to be walked through and witness the care that the character is given to get through them.

There’s a part where he says “look at me Serylla” and I… immediately.. passed out.

Chapter 22….. lives in my brain. Rent free. It replays…. Constantly…

This series is going to follow more of the dragons through each book and I’m so excited to get to know them and the other humans!

There is a cliffhanger that hurt me a bit… but knowing there’s more of the story just around the corner… I’ll make it.

This is a fun, spicy, hilarious dragon romance with so much heart. I cannot recommend it enough.

I was lured by the cover and a promise of high (or at least higher) fantasy. I should’ve known better. I shouldv’e put it down earlier. I shouldn’t have finished it. Yet here I am, ashamed, uncertain, questioning my choices in life. Please don’t judge me.

I stand by my belief that there isn't a book that Rebecca cannot write, that I won't love. I literally say so many times how often I hate the pregnancy trope or anything pregnancy related in a book. This book has it and I loved it. I loved the reasoning behind what the dragons were doing, I loved the twist of the curse. I love the fact that the birthing process was still a literal egg.

This book has a lot of miscommunication between the FMC and MMC, but it wasn't to the point of frustration, it actually made the book quite humorous and light. When the princess was told that her and the other females were kidnapped for breeding purposes and the princess immediately had a breakdown in her mind thinking she was going to be torn about by dragon p**n. Literally could not stop laughing. Kyregan's poor explanation of things just really kept the story moving along and interesting.

This book follows two POV: Kyregan and Serylla.

The book starts off with the dragons attacking a smaller city belonging to Serylla's kingdom. The dragons made an agreement with a king. The queen was given the choice to back down and give up the throne willingly to spare her people, but instead she allowed them to be used as pawns while she plotted with her sorcerer to cast a curse. The curse wiped out all the female dragons from existence. This caused the dragons to retaliate and steal human females to be used for their breeding purposes. Every 25 years the dragons have to breed and not doing so has side effects to their magic. The dragons had intentions of kidnapping the sorcerer's daughter to have her turn the females into dragons, but the sorceress put a twist on the spell and instead it turned the dragons into humans for about 8 hours. The change is uncontrollable but it is said with time that they may be able to change at will.

I could not put this book down and I realized when I was at 95% of the way through the book and it didn't feel like a resolution was coming any time soon, that I was about to get thrown a massive cliffhanger. That I was. So here I am waiting for book two.

If you are wondering if you should read this book, my answer is yes.

This is a new series for the author, and I can already say that I am READY for more! If you love heat, enemies to lovers, strong and feisty women, and the strong men who just totally fall for them, then you need this romance!

I loved the chemistry between Serylla and Kyreagan. They start off as prisoner/captor when Kyreagan and the other male dragons kidnap the human women with plans to make them into dragons. I love that Serylla’s plan is to be as annoying as she possibly can LOL. Of course, that backfires and Kyreagan falls for her anyway!

There is spice, humor, and a fun world that I am excited to get more stories in. Also - warning for a cliffhanger! The next book should be out in a few months and OMG I NEED! I can’t wait to get stories of the other couples as well!

Another winner from Rebecca for me!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
