Borderline: Australia's Treatment of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the Wake of the Tampa

Rate this book
Borderline was first published in April 2001, and immediately received widespread acclaim for its authority, its humanity, its passion and its fundamental honesty. The second edition includes much new testimony from professionals who have worked inside Australia’s immigration detention system and who now feel compelled to speak out about their experiences.

One of those books that makes you thankful for journalism (as opposed to the sensationalist and ignorant reporting on the issue that normally fills the papers). I liked how Mares shows faults on both sides of politics and proposed alternatives based on policies of the past and from those of other countries (and would like to read more on how refugees are handled in Sweden, in particular). An ongoing issue that I think will be prominent again in the media in the near future. A worthwhile read for anyone who wants to get their facts straight, even though refugee policy has changed since this book was published.
