Looking for Trouble
Trouble seems to follow Jesse Morgan.
No matter how many times he tries to clean up his act, drinking and fighting and picking pockets are about the only things that make him feel good. All he wants when he boards a train heading for Nevada is a fresh start. He just needs a little change, a little adventure, a chance to shake off the dark cloud he seems to be stuck under.
Will Kaplan isn't part of that plan. When the tall, handsome cowboy pulls him out of a jam five minutes after he steps off the train, Jesse's not sure if he's grateful or embarrassed. He's never met anyone like the quiet, no-nonsense stranger who offers him a temporary job and a place to stay.
Will's stern with lots of strict rules-- and threats of childish consequences that surely must be a bluff. But he's patient and fair like no one's ever been with him, and he makes Jesse crave things he's never thought about. Makes him want to cause trouble just to see what might happen. Will makes him want to do all kinds of things that he definitely shouldn't be thinking about.

Could’ve been so so good but somehow it wasn’t. The premise was pretty promising: USA middle of the 19th century, a cowboy who was a bit of a loner and who had a daddy/boy kink buried deep inside and of course a 20 years old boy in search of adventure and a place to call home. Sounds pretty great right? Only that it kinda wasn’t. The boy was OTT bratty and he was impossible to like. He mostly came across as rude instead of bratty, acting up and being all “Oh oh I hope he spanks me “. The cowboy on the other hand was “Oh I wanna be his daddy and teach him how to behave “ but he never does because reasons. We spend 70% of the book with internal monologues where the guys were telling us over and over again what they feel and what they want and again how the other makes them feel. They’re in their head a lot and we’re there with them as they’re the only characters in the book and boy, the book is not short (450 pages) so imagine 450 pages with only two of them and non stop in their head.
I loved the writing though, I like this author’s stories so I liked the over all story here too. I also loved the setting and the dialogues between them while they were getting to know one another (when the kid was not acting up) . It’s not a bad book, it’s just that the kid is not very likable most of the times and there is too little action or events. They tend to the farm, they fight, the kid gets threatened with spanking but he doesn’t receive it and at 70% they get together, the kid finally gets his spanking , they have sex and the end. I wish there were more characters apart from them or something to shorten a bit the internal musings. Anyways, the book is enjoyable and I don’t regret reading it . I love historicals -especially westerns.

Well this was a long slow build. Yes there was a Daddy / boy kink but it was done in such a way that felt sweet and somewhat naive. As both men fought their feelings and desires, thinking something was wrong with them, they eventually came to realize they fit perfectly. No doubt this book was long, and you really got into Will & Jesses heads. While I would have loved more D/s play there was enough to keep me hanging in there !

This story was glorious! The vivid setting, the slow burn romance, the comfort, tenderness, and passion & the beloved Captain, all stole my heart. I read the story via KU, but I bought my own copy to keep & treasure. I loved it. I am a huge Misha Horne fan, but this story may be my favorite (so far)!!

3.5 stars rounded up.
So...this book. Wow. Well, it was not so much cowboy as homestead centered. After the first 15% or so, Will and Jesse never meet another person or leave the homestead for the rest of the book.
Loner Will, for reasons only his subconscious really knows at first, unexpectedly brings home a weary, troublesome, young traveler, Jesse and the attraction on both sides eats these guys up internally for 3/4 of the book. There is so much yearning and fear on both sides, it's a little exhausting and a lot sad and just about the same in frustrating. As a historical romance setting, as a reader we understand why there is so much fear and reticence to admit or act on the feelings they are each having separately for each other and are so reluctant to get confronted over if they are reading the other even slightly wrong....
Then at the 70% mark, these guys just explode and then it turns out Will and Jesse are pretty good at talking out their needs, understanding what they want and Will just melted my heart by making it all work for Jesse.
And...once they got on the same sexuality page, these guys started off and STAYED HAWT. OMG. HAWT. I didn't skim any of the sex scenes in this book, which again, really don't happen until the last quarter of the book.
And then it turns out that Will is a big ol' romantic. I loved it. I know daddy kink isn't for everyone, I don't even usually prefer it, but this one really worked for me, especially once they got it going on.

DNF at 67%. This was too introspective for me. So much buildup and too little payoff. If I had to read one more variation of “At that moment I wanted to wrap him up in my arms/ kiss him/ tell him how I feel… But I didn’t” I would have howled at the full moon in agony.

I finished it. This book was journey of opposites for me. I loved the beginning and liked the end. About 60% of the in between I didn’t like. In spite of that I made 18 highlights. The characters were great, atmosphere wonderful. Imo the book was much too long. It helped me to establish a more healthy sleep schedule because it was a great sleeping aid in the evenings.

This story is the epitome of the slow burn. I don't think they even touch each other until halfway through the book. That works, because this is a pioneer homestead historical story, and both these men have a long way to go from near-total inexperience. First, each has to accept that they are gay, and like D/s punishment play and Daddy kink. And then progress to daring to see if the other guy might feel the same way. In an era when none of those things was considered even remotely acceptable, it takes a lot of courage and a lot of self-discovery to reach that point.
There's quite a bit of internal dialog and doubt and almost-not-quite moments, and eventually it felt a little slow, but mostly it felt natural to the characters. And once they do get together their explorations are both hot and sweet. I did wish that at some point they had interaction with folks other than the two of them - after the first 20% or so they are so isolated they are in their own world, and watching them navigate social situations would have been fun. But the story as it was written was satisfying, and I was rooting for these two men and how well they fit together.

Loooong book. This book was a smorgasbord of things people might like, spanking, daddy kink, first timers, cowboys, sassy brats. And Will and Jesse were heart warming, good guys, so well matched and exactly what the other needed to fill the respective dark corners. But this was long and had so much internal (and external) dialogue that I found myself skimming a lot just to move things along.

3.5 Kinky mm historical romance between a taciturn homesteader and the cocky young ne're-do-well from Chicago that he impulsively hires. It features a loooong, slow burn, culminating in a lot of hot, consensual spanking and sex. This is a departure for MH - not just the historical setting but the fact that it’s closer to erotic romance or even just romance than her usual spanking erotica.
The sex to story ratio is not typical for MH - I was kind of shocked that the first spanking wasn’t until chapter 20 and the first kiss not until chapter 24 (70% ish). But the pay off is worth it - hot sex and emotionally satisfying hea.
One of MH’s strengths is writing emotionally compelling erotica - even though the set ups are usually ridiculous, the emotions feel real. And that’s true here too - with a more substantial, less ridiculous plot and story.
I’m still not sure if the story serves the sex or the sex serves the story. Would I have read 20 whole chapters of longing, flirting and farm chores without the promise of some hot sex and an honest to goodness consensual woodshed scene? Probably not.
I enjoyed the slow burn and the developing relationship but it got a little repetitive - some of it could be edited out without losing anything.
I’d recommend this for anyone who secretly enjoyed the woodshed scenes in old school westerns or if you liked Wicked West by Victoria Dahl. Or patient fans of daddy kink or spanking romances.

My new favorite!
So, in general, I don’t like cowboy books and I don’t like historical settings. But upon hearing that Misha Horne finally had a new book out, I threw any preconceptions out the window and dove in. And boy, am I glad I did! This was FANTASTIC!
It’s a bit of a slow burn, but the build-up is totally believable, given the wariness of the one and the gruffness of the other. I never lost interest, though. Other than the beginning of the book, it’s pretty much just the two main characters on an isolated farm, and it really came alive for me with the descriptions and events that happened.
So, slow burn, like I said, but once they both admit what they want? HOLY HOTNESS! Spanking! Daddy kink! All kinds of good stuff! And yet it still doesn’t lose the charm and sweetness that the rest of the book has.
It’s hard for me to play favorites, but this has just bumped Not So Smart out of my number one spot for Misha’s books. Can’t wait to see what she does next!

I loved this book! The narrative voice and dialogue fit the historical setting perfectly and really brought the characters and their environment to life. It's a long-ish, slow-burn book, but the pacing was fine for me, and I liked both the long character introspection parts and the slow development of the relationship between Will and Jesse. The kink was written in a way that made sense both for the time period and for these particular characters, and I found both Jesse and Will to be interesting and sympathetic characters (even if Jesse sometimes stressed me out as much as he stressed Will out). It also had a good balance of romance and kink, which I was happy about.

Will & Jesse are both to each other everything they never knew they wanted and needed.
On Looking for Trouble you can deeply feel and understand these characters' feelings and actions. It's so well-written and well explained. The description doesn't do this book enough justice. It goes way beyond what most who have read the synopsis would probably expect. There's a deepness in these characters, but it's still a light story. Intense but far from being heavy. It's one of those books that is everything it's supposed to be without trying too hard.
Jesse in particular is a very funny character. You will laugh hard with this one! I mean... Who in their right mind tries feeding whiskey to a horse?
The only complain got is that it needs more pages. I know it might be unusual since it's already very long, but I really think this book should have at least 200 more pages to explore everything it has to offer. It's a slow-burn, so everything we've been longing for starts to happen only after the 70% mark. It's just not enough. I needed more of those two after they finally reached that place on their relationship. I'm not saying a sequel is necessary, because it's really not. But some bonus chapters would be nice.
In the epilogue, the author keeps mentioning all these incredible moments that happened off-page. Why he didn't write all that before the epilogue it's something to be explained. That's the only reason I'm not giving it five stars.
By the way, the title of this book should be 'Tamed'. Misha Horne, how didn't you thought about this?

Oh my stars, this was beautiful. There really aren't enough m/m historical daddy kink books out there. (The only other one I can think of is Boytraine Island, sadly.)
The characters are really lovable, and they give each other exactly what they've always needed. And since they're isolated on a farm with no neighbors for miles, there's no period-typical homophobia to contend with.
My only caveat--the longing glances and unfulfilled "why-I-oughta-tan-yer-hide-boy" threats get suuuuper repetitive. Like, that's the majority of the book. I get that this is a slow burn, but I felt the amount of build-up to the relationship detracted from the the time we see the characters actually exploring their relationship. It's like a sandwich with too much bread and not enough meat--and don't get me wrong, I fucking love bread.
Thankfully I was so invested in the characters and their story that I plodded through this slowest burn in the history of slow burns.
Idk, if you're alone with someone on a farm in the middle of nowhere...you'd think things would heat up a liiiiiittle bit faster. But that's just me, haha.

Cowboys, Spanking, and a Brat Who Needs a Daddy!
I love all of Misha Horne's books, and this one does not disappoint! It has her trademark intense spanking scenes, lots of emotion and need between the main characters, a sweet but stern cowboy, and a Chicago brat who doesn't know why he wants to be spanked but is desperate for it anyway. Probably because of the time period (1888), it takes this couple a little longer to get together since they have to get past their preconceptions that all of what they want is wrong: being with a man, spanking, needing a daddy, etc. But when they do, the scenes are almost unbearably hot! I loved the Nevada setting, the time period, Jesse and Will, just everything!

So I read this back in August, but I do want to write a review, even all these months later, because helloooo it's Daddy kink and DK is my first, middle, and last name. First let me say I love this author's work. I think her ability to pack a ton of emotion into a short piece is astounding. She can get right to the heart of the character's emotions where you truly feel and live it with them. 'Not So Smart' hit ALL the right notes for me. I got everything I wanted out of that book, and I really wish she would release Book 2 so I can stop re-reading it. :-)
With this book, sigh. So I read a blog post where the author said she was nervous about this book because Daddy kink was new territory; to me it showed. I feel like the author doubts and second guesses herself and it comes through in the delivery. This book is a meaty 406 pages....that could easily have been cut in half. It starts off great, the characters are awesome (the Daddy was swooooon worthy), the build up and anticipation of the Daddy kink are delicious...and then the momentums suffers horribly and the characters get stuck in some kind of strange loop.
Like I said, what this author does immensely well is convey emotion in a very succinct way. With this book you sink deep early on, but it's ultimately unfulfilling because the characters literally have the EXACT SAME conversation for about 15 chapters!! It was unbelievable to me. It totally killed the story! What I like about Daddy kink is how organic it is when done right. Daddy just IS. The need IS. This is true for any kink I guess. If you have to explain everything and beat every conversation to death, it kills the whole thing. The author doubts her own ability. You can do this, you DID do it 200 pages ago!
Once the characters actually, FINALLY, get together it feels to me like the Daddy relationship is reduced to the very basest understanding of DK, and was made all about spankings and discipline. Daddy kink is so much more than that. I don't know. This just didn't work for me, which was sad after such a great start.
I would probably read this again, but possibly just the beginning when they meet and ultimately acknowledge their attraction, and then skip to 75%.

If you have to explain everything and beat every conversation to death, it kills the whole thing. The author doubts her own ability. You can do this, you DID do it 200 pages ago!
Once the characters actually, FINALLY, get together it feels to me like the Daddy relationship is reduced to the very basest understanding of DK, and was made all about spankings and discipline. Daddy kink is so much more than that. I don't know. This just didn't work for me, which was sad after such a great start.
I would probably read this again, but possibly just the beginning when they meet and ultimately acknowledge their attraction, and then skip to 75%.

This book was fantastic. It was very romantic, which I loved. The heroes pined for each other for exactly the right amount of time before getting together. The kink elements were so enjoyable and hot. There were so many spankings!! I cannot recommend this book enough. It was such a great read.

I’d enjoyed another book by this author, so i thought I’d take a chance on this one....
Trouble has followed Jesse Morgan his entire life, so he grabs the chance to escape the gritty underside of Chicago for a new life in Nevada. Will Kaplan is pretty content alone on his ranch — but when he encounters Jesse on one of his rare trips to town, he’s unaccountably drawn to the dirty and exhausted kid. Both of them are surprised when Jesse reluctantly agrees to Will’s offer to help out at the ranch. As their friendship s-l-o-w-l-y develops, Jesse discovers there’s something dark and wonderful in defying...and obeying...Will; and Will embraces the feelings he gets when Jesse responds. However, when Jesse’s disobedience puts him in danger, Will must confront the feelings that he’s buried for so long....
I’m all about building up the sexual tension in a story. But I guess there’s always the risk of too much of a good thing......
It’s annoying to read through the pages and pages and pages of Jesse’s repetitive angst and hand-wringing over his inability to control his impulses... which always results in Jesse getting himself into trouble. Theres pages and pages of Will threatening Jesse with consequences, and of applying them.. and of Jesse just repeating the offenses. This goes on for about 75% of the book. Then suddenly Will wakes up, and decides to take charge, and Jesse just melts...finding what he didn’t even know he needed.
So the last 25% of the book is all about Jesse and Will exploring their new dynamic. And it’s pretty hot...especially if you’re into a little Daddy-kink.
Another annoyance...the story’s told in alternating 1st person POV, and it’s very easy to lose track of who’s talking...I frequently ended up having to go back to the beginning of the chapter to figure out whose chapter it was....Will or Jesse.

Editing to add a bit of a rant - A huge pet peeve of mine - The author, NUMEROUS times, uses the phrase "all of THE sudden." ARGH!!! The phrase is all of A sudden. I even Googled it to make sure when I saw it for the 5th time. Pulled me out of the story (and drove me a bit crazy) every time I saw it.

But now… in slipped this quiet change that seemed bigger than crossing the whole country. Bigger than loss, bigger than gain… not even a change I could put a name to. And he was sitting there right next to me.
4.5 stars. One of those books that I definitely expected to like but really did not think that I would love. And yet, here we are, somehow. This is a very serendipitous amalgamation of a bunch of things that I do like, but can sometimes really hate, unless they're done well. And this author manages to balance a lot of different elements really skilfully and in a really lovely way. This is a historical cowboy m/m romance between a young street kid who moves out west to better his lot in life, and the cowboy that he meets literally as soon as he gets off the train. It's slow burn, with not a lot of plot, and a lot of kink exploration. I really loved it.
And I mean, of course there is a plot, but it's mostly just Jesse and Will getting to know each other, feeling each other out, inching towards the desires and the type of dynamic that they both yearn for. Will takes Jesse on as a farmhand in the hopes of keeping him out of trouble and teaching him a few much-needed skills. Jesse can be a really big brat; not so much that he isn't willing to learn, but he acts out and doesn't know how to take to being treated kindly, or accepting what he sees as charity. Meanwhile, Will really wants to take care of him, enjoys teaching him and giving him discipline. And they very slowly work their way towards an understanding.
I’d been longing for someone who thought I had good in me but just needed to learn better. Someone like him.
I really loved how slow this was. It's a kinda long book for a romance, and somewhere around the midway point, I thought it might have been too slow? But it was more that I was a little bit frustrated with the push and pull in the dynamic. They would seem to take a few steps forward, and then a few steps back when it came to admitting their feelings and desires. But now that I've finished the book, I think that I actually really like the pace that the author used for the relationship. There really is nothing more satisfying than a good slow burn. This is also one of those sort of isolation romances, because they're secluded on Will's farm, and after the first several chapters, we don't even encounter any other characters (unless you count the animals on the farm, all of whom I really loved, by the by). I don't always like that in romances, when the couple is so insulated from the outside. But it really worked for this romance, and the fact that they are figuring each other out, discovering things about themselves. I don't know. There was something about them unearthing this particular D/s dynamic in a historical era, and navigating a kind of relationship that isn't very commonplace, that they couldn't just look up or get guidance on, and both of them being really inexperienced. That combination just made this almost kind of magical? Which, lol, seems like a very hyperbolic word to use for a kinky romance. I don't know, man. It was slow and delicious and when it finally came to the first encounter and their first kiss, it was everything I could have hoped for. The catalyst for it all was tense and exciting. The romance of it all just swept me off my feet, especially the aspect of Will really wanting to take care of Jesse, and Jesse slowly but surely coming to the realisation that he's worth taking care of, even when (and perhaps especially when) he acts out and gets a little bratty.
I knew then he was mine, in ways so far beyond what I ever could have dreamed. Knew I was his and could never be anyone else’s.
I loved them. There were so many lines in the last half that were sooooo achingly romantic. And I kind of liked that the story took its time. A huge chunk of the book, perhaps a third of it, took place in maybe 24 hours. And I liked that there was so many words and so many events encapsulated in that time. Going over every consecutive moment in great detail in sequence just made it seem more meaningful. Especially since we had a lot of firsts to cover in that section, and especially after there had been so much build up. It was nice to take our time with the climax and come down.
I can't believe I'm waxing poetic about a book that was mostly, like, D/s and spanking. But, look, it was good!! I'm sad that the author doesn't seem to have written any more historical romances, and I'm not sure I'm all that interested in their other books. But I may check them out. These are the kinds of character-driven romances that I can find myself really falling for. Again, there really wasn't a lot of plot, but with character interaction like this, that was so intense and so epic and so swoony, I really didn't miss it. Hopefully I'll come back to this author soon.

This was just OK for me. I liked the premise of Will taking care of Jesse and helping him become adept with cowboy/farming skills. But the story dragged and I found myself skimming quite a bit.
Will and Jesse are both loners () and never quite figured out why. When they meet, they end up complementing each other's needs very nicely. Jesse desperately wants someone to discipline him and Will really wants to take care of Jesse. They learn the whole Daddy/boy thing from scratch.

New to me author, but it was recommended and I’m so glad I gave it a try. It’s a long book, but never felt long.
I have never read a historical daddy kink before and I was a bit scared that it was going to be too modern and not fit the historical setting. Couldn’t have been more wrong. From the first sentence you are transported back in time and you stay there all through the book.
The way they struggle to figure out their desires and what they want and need is incredibly well done. This is a slow burn book, but the tension starts early and never wavers. The daddy kink aspect feels incredible organic, something that it’s part of the MCs and works beautifully.
Very happy to have picked this up

I've only read two books by Misha Horne prior to this and I loved both of them. I didn't realize I found spanking all sorts of kinkysexysweet until I picked up Working Out the Kinks. So, that was a pleasant revelation.
Looking for Trouble had that same kinky vibe, but this time set in a 1880's homestead where a farmer who likes to serve up discipline, meets a young man desperately in need of a daddy who'll give him what he needs. I loved the premise and the slow burn romance between the two of them was delicious. However...the overly long inner monologues were wearying after a while, and I found myself skipping through chunks of them in order to get to the next scene. So, while I'd love to give it 4 stars, it really was more of a 3.5 for me.
All in all, though, I did enjoy this book and would have no problem recommending it to anyone who likes a healthy portion of spanking with their romance.

I really enjoyed the slow pace at first, getting to be inside both MCs vastly different minds. Aside from the discipline kink, this book was very different from another book I'd read by the author (the outrageously OTT Old School Discipline?). I thought the book was very well written, but the extra slow burn probably could've sped up by the halfway mark. By the time the heroes actually began to acknowledge their attraction and their mutual kink, I had lost all interest. Such a shame. I DNFed around 80% because I felt what else could they possibly have left to figure out.

I enjoyed reading this, I found it quite a heartwarming story. I like MCs that are a little bit different and Will is a laconic, older man, I think he’s actually only in his 30s but he’s an old soul and the perfect match for tempestuous Jesse.
Jesse has never found anywhere that he truly fitted in and was a little lost emotionally so I enjoyed seeing him find his home with Will.

Jesse and Will are fantastic characters and I loved their dynamic. The “slow burn” this book is touted as ended up just being “slow” for me. The ennui of their internal dialogue broke up and/or halted any sexual tension that may have been developing, up to about the 80% mark when actual action rather than just telling picked up.
But this is just my opinion. The guys are great and their love is beautiful, so give it a go if you’re interested. 👍

3.5* A leisurely paced introspective type of story with the slowest of slow burn romances between a cowboy and a young drifter, set in the late 1880s.
Will Kaplan is a settler farmer, keeping himself to himself in middle-of-nowhere Nevada. Since his grandparents died he’s barely had any human company at all, except during a biannual visit into town to sell his whisky and buy supplies. It’s there that he meets Jesse Morgan, fresh off the train from Chicago and smelling of trouble. Jesse is a small time thief, who won the train ticket in a card game, and set off with some vague sense of adventure. Turns out the Wild West isn’t quite as he pictured it, but he sure likes the way the tall silent man in the cowboy hat is looking at him. After Will steps in to rescue him during an ill-advised bar fight, Jesse agrees to join him on the farm for a few days, before he heads out to the gold fields.
The relationship between Jesse and Will develops in the splendid isolation of the ranch, over a number of months. There are literally no other characters for 80% of the book. POV alternates between them chapter by chapter and almost all the action is internal monologue. These are two virgin men, neither of whom have experienced strong attraction before, and working out what is going on between them takes a looooong time. They think about it A LOT, their narration constantly circling each other and the feelings they’re having. It makes for a languid read.
And I read it slowly (at least for a romance) because it was a pleasure to do so. If I’m honest I got as much if not more satisfaction from the voice and prose and texture of Horne’s writing as from the burgeoning relationship. It’s full of surprises and treats, very tender and thoughtful at all times. I luxuriated in it, even when I found the dynamic between Will and Jesse a little discomforting.
This is daddy kink, which I know is not uncommon in mm but not something I’ve read before, and it is heavy on the discipline and spanking. It’s really nicely and sweetly done, and the flow of power between the two men makes a lot of sense, but it gets a little repetitive towards the end. I craved different types of intimacy between them, which we only got shorter glimpses of. I will definitely read more Misha Horne, given the way her writing works for me, but in the knowledge that the kink is not my kink.

I enjoy books about the mundane, and this is a good example of that. It's 1888 on a homestead in Nevada, and Will and Jesse spend their days working on the farm. Outside of the first few introductory chapters - and some well-characterised animals - there are no other people in this story; the entire intrigue is between these two men.
I also enjoy a slow burn, but by god this was slow. Halfway through, it was me begging for a spanking, and it didn't end there. Let me tell you, I wouldn't have waited nearly so long before giving Jesse the whupping he was asking for; Will is a far more patient person than I am!
Once they made it past that first step though, it was full steam ahead, and the sex scenes were many and good. I think the daddy-kink aspect was introduced in a historically plausible way, but for some reason the last 15% or so shocked me back into modern times.
Kink-wise, we have a daddy, a brat, various flavours of spanking, and a little bit of roleplay.
Overall, this was an enjoyable if slightly frustrating read. I wish there'd been a little less yearning, and a little more development of the emotional side of their relationship after they begin their D/s dynamic.
