Shadows of War #3

Bite of Vengeance

Rate this book
I am either the dark or the light.

Those few words trapped me in a life that I didn’t know existed.

A life that my enemies are very aware of. I am the key to the war between the humans and vampires. Both sides plan to use me by bending me to their will.

Then there’s Zan. He saved me. Then broke me. And now he’s doing everything in his power to convince me to let him back in.

But the longer I’m in this violent world, the more I realize that trusting the wrong person could be my downfall.

*This is the third and final book of the Shadows of War series, and the first two books must be read first. This is a dark vampire romance set in a dystopian world. For more information on content, please refer to author’s website.*

Giving this 4 stars absolutely pains me because I adore Kay and I’ve read every single one of her books which are usually always 5 stars for me (this is only the second book of hers I’ve given 4 to, yes she is THAT good). However, I have to stay true to my feelings and admit there were some things about this book I wish had been a tiny bit different. Of course, this isn’t to say 4 stars isn’t still amazing, because it is, but ultimately it just means it’s not my favorite in the series.

This book picks up where we left off in Book 2. Kali has gotten a ton of new information revealed such as a potential twin and that she is a Shadow of some sort. As we know, there are two sides who want Kali and she’s constantly put in the middle. Without giving away too many spoilers, this book is the epic conclusion of all sides finally coming to head. Please don’t read this review further if you don’t want mild spoilers.

Things I LOVED-
As with the first and second book, ZAN. He is ultimate book boyfriend goals as is a common occurrence with Kay’s MC’s. I don’t know how she does it every time and still make them unique, but his utter devotion to Kali is everything.

Kali’s strength. Kay is also known for her strong bad ass FMCs and Kali certainly makes the list. I love that her strength rivals Zans and that he encourages her to embrace it.

The PLOT TWISTS. The way you’re kept on the edge of your seat for this book is insane. Right when I think I can predict what way it’s going, it goes in a direction I never even thought of. Again, a talent of Kay’s and no shortage of that here. Her ability to shock you never ceases to amaze me. This series was definitely more plot heavy and I’ll admit I don’t read a ton of vampire books but I’d read this one again and again for the twists and turns.

The spice. While we did NOT get very much of it in this book, when we did get it it was fire between these two as always!

The Clovers and the ending. I loved the twist with the Clovers and think that the ending was really well done. I was very happy with the conclusion and how things panned out for all of the characters!

Things that weren’t my favorite-

I really wanted more quality time / individual moments between Zan and Kali. Because there was so much action in this book by the end of it I felt like their relationship had taken a bit of a backseat. I get it, but considering they were bonded I felt like we needed it. Which leads me to the next point.

The spice. I’m used to Kay’s books being scorching and this one was definitely lacking. If you want top notch you go to book 2 for that because while the chemistry is never lacking between the two the spice in this was nothing special or unique. Again, I know the plot was heavy on this one but the combo of this being missing and then not getting a ton of intimate moments with Zan and Kali made it more noticeable.

The side characters. I wish we had gotten more. I was bummed at how little interaction there was between Warner and Kali. That had been such a big side plot in the other two books that it felt like he completely fell to the wayside here. I wish there had been more of him and Kali interacting and honestly a little more of everyone involved.

No epilogue. I REALLY wish we had gotten an extended epilogue in this circumstance. I would’ve loved to see them both as parents. The ending did feel kind of rushed in some ways and then we flash forward quite a bit so it would’ve been nice to get a little bit more Zan and Kali after such a crazy conclusion.

Overall though this book was amazing as is all of Kay’s work. Can’t recommend enough!

The Shadows of War series was the series that began my love of Kay Riley's books and I can formally say that I am so bloody in love with Zan & Kali's relationship and ending.

I did rate it 4/5 stars solely for the fact that
1. I wish we saw more Kali and Zan moments - I wanted to see their relationship blossom a bit more behind doors and intimately than with Viggo & Pax always lurking as well as every time he tried to show her love and affection Keeva shows up either physically or in thought (fyi I'm a sucker for cute moments and just mad for Zan lmao)
&
2. I loved the plot twist but man did some of the ending hit a nerve, I understand why it had to end this way but wished we could see more of Kali and the shadows in the end - would have loved seeing her embrace all the work they accomplished and working aside the shadows who have never really been in an active community environment outside of The Pen but again, I understand why it ended the way it did and why the had to part ways with the others.

In saying that, it ended in a way that makes you feel happy that they are happy and now that I've processed that Kali and Zan's story is finished, I honestly wouldn't change a thing. Kay has encapsulated their relationship perfectly and I'm honoured that I could be an ARC for Bite of Vengeance

This was such a roller coaster of emotions! There’s action, intense twists that had me wanting to throw my kindle and so many amazing moments. I LOVE Zan and Kali!

This authors writes the most amazing characters! I’m so sad this is the last book, I want more but it ended so perfect. Kali is such a strong fmc. She’s always true to herself, I just loved her definitely one of my favs! Now Zan..he’s perfect! Unhinged and intense, completely obsessed with Kali and will burn the world down for her.

Wow what a way to end the series! I am giving this 4.75 and I just could not put this book down and the ending had my heart pounding with all the action and the ending! I don't want to give any clues, but it had me in a chokehold. The reason I am not giving it a 5 is that is usually for the books that wreck me emotionally where I am sobbing. But this was still such a good book, and I will be buying the whole series to add to my shelves.
Now for the characters you have Zan who I ADORED him because of how possessive and protective that he was of Kali. He was willing to do anything for her and only really cared about her and I loved it. Kali continued to be a badass in this book, but she has some emotional struggles in this book as she has to deal with the revelations of the letter her mom left her as well as she has a twin. A twin who has been held by the enemy PARA her whole life. So as much as she wants to bond with her only remaining family member things may not go the way she hopes. Now I do wish there was a little more scene where Zan and Kali got to just be together and bond but with everything they had going on fighting a war on multiple fronts and having to deal with betrayals close to home it is understandable why they weren't able to do it as often as I liked. But the times they were together along with the few spicy scenes were well done.
All in all, this book had great action, great characters, and some twists/surprises and it finished out the series perfectly. The series overall has been one I have enjoyed, and I would recommend it and I can't wait to see what they author comes up with next.

This book is about Kali who after finding out that she has a twin and that together they are the key that could bring about the end of the war. The question is which side would come out the winner because with the twins one is dark, and one is light, and they can be used to end the vampire race or bring about a new dawn of peace for all who live in their world. But both side the PARA the human military and Amaros the leader of the vampires has their own plans for her and the shadows who follow her. But it's not only the shadows who want to follow her but Zan as well who saved her only to break her and now is doing everything, he can to convince her to let him back in even if it means going against his father in order to keep her safe. But he can't keep her safe from the war that is finally coming to a head where loyalties will be tested and could mean that trusting the wrong person could lead not only to her downfall but the downfall for everyone, she wants to keep safe.

✨ARC Review Incoming✨

Bite of Vengeance || Shadows of War, Book #3 by Kay Riley
⭐️4 || 🌶️3 || 🗣️Dual POV, 1st Person

Read this series if you like:
▪️Vampires vs. Humans
▪️Enemies to Lovers
▪️Dark Vampire Romance
▪️Dystopian World
▪️Fated Mates
▪️Character Growth
▪️Touch Her and Become His Personal Blood Bag
▪️Strong FMC
▪️Forced Proximity
▪️Completed Trilogy

This trilogy is one of those guilty pleasure reads for me. It made my Vampire Diaries-loving heart happy.

It picks up right where we left off, and Kali is thrown into a whirlwind of new information about herself and her family. She is the pawn in the war between humans and vampires, and both sides will do anything to get her. Loyalties are tested and there’s betrayal on both sides. The only thing that remains true is that Kali and Zan will do anything for each other. Zan is obsessed with her, which he’s made clear since book 1, and Kali finally comes to terms with her feelings for him just in time for them to take on both his father and PARA.

The plot definitely moves to the forefront with this book compared to the first two which were more character-focused. There’s twists and turns throughout the story, and Kay brings it home with a well-deserved happy ending.

While I’m sad the story has come to an end, I’m happy it’s complete and can definitely see myself reading it again!

🗣️ “Who are you loyal to?”
“Her. Always her.”

🗣️ "God,” Viggo snickered. “You made my brother soft.”
“No, Pax said thoughtfully. “They made each other stronger.”

🗣️ “You are the light who saved me from the darkness. You taught me that life doesn't have to be cruel and savage. That love is possible.”

What an amazing end to such a great series

There was so many twists and turns in this book, that I was literally on my toes at all times waiting for the next thing to make me go "wtf is happening".

Kali has always been a strong FMC throughout the series, but this book she really did her thing! I have never been prouder of an FMC as I am of Kali. And Zan!!!! That man would burn the world down for her. He's a very strong MMC, but what I loved most about him, was that he stepped back and let Kali do what she was meant to do. They were such a power couple in this book, and I appreciated and loved every bit of it.

It was really nice to finally get a little back story about Kali and her mother and what happened with that. Book three definitely tied everything together so beautifully.

The plots twists were out of this world!! Kay got me gasping so many times with things that kept getting revealed or situations that kept happening. I had to set my kindle down a couple of times because she kept breaking my heart lol.

Also, the spice and the banter and teasing between the two during the spicy time....I LOVED IT!!!!!!!! Who knew vampire spice would be so....😏lol

I highly recommend this book! One of my top reads and series of all times! Amazing job!

Spicy: 3.5🌶️

The final book in Kay Riley's "Bite of Vengeance" series is an absolute thrill ride! In this book, we see Kali, the brave main character, uncover her identity as a shadow, which adds a compelling twist to the story. Alongside Zan, her loyal partner, they are on a mission to bring peace to a world divided between humans, vampires, and shadows. This book delivers an intense mix of action and romance, brilliantly balancing the high-stakes conflict with the deepening bond between Kali and Zan. Their connection is beautifully depicted, showcasing a love that is unbreakable. Both characters are devoted to each other and demonstrate unwavering dedication, willing to do whatever it takes to save one another. As the plot unfolds, secrets are revealed, and the loyalty of all characters is put to the test. The themes of drama, guilt, hate, vengeance, love, loyalty, and strength resonate throughout the pages, creating a rich tapestry of emotions that keeps you invested in the story. While the overall journey was truly amazing, I found myself wishing for a bit more from the ending. Even so, every moment of the book was captivating, and I cherished every second of this adventure. Kay Riley has truly crafted an unforgettable finale that fans of the series will absolutely love

You may be thinking - “Rachel, why do you keep rating this series with 4.5⭐️?”

Or you may not be thinking that at all. Idk.

I DO KNOW that I really liked this series. The beginning of this book I was honestly thinking of eating it closer to 3⭐️ (sue me, I’m picky) but the ending really bumped it up. We FINALLY got the answers we’d been waiting for and with a nice little HEA on top.

BUT ….. I need a word with you, Kay. I need you to listen to me.

If you do not give me more Pax. More Warner. More Viggo….well, idk what I’ll do BUT YOU WONT LIKE IT OKAY !!

Okay, okay. Sorry. I just feel SO BAD for baby Pax. And Viggo… the oldest vibes are tugging on my heart strings. 😩

ALSO, on a real note, the ultimate reason why I gave this 4.5⭐️ is due to a few things:

1. This book was so action packed it seemed that Zan and Kali’s relationship kinda halted. Like, we barely get any interaction between them even after finding out they’ve bonded.
2. I love me some good side characters. Unfortunately some of my favs (Gia and Warner) to a bit of a hit. Warner was pretty non existent. I NEED MORE

I’m very sad for this to be over, honestly. I love this little world and I really, really, REALLY hope that there will be a spin off featuring Pax or Viggo.

This is the last book in the trilogy. It was different from anything I have ever read so far. I loved the dystopian vibes it gave but also all the vampire ones. It has a lot of angst. The characters are all interesting and the main characters have great chemistry. You get some war strategy and fighting too. The banter between the brothers was great and I always loved Viggo giving Zan a hard time. Kali is such an interesting character. She drove me mad the first book, I loved her anyway. She has a ton of growth from book to book. Amaros was a very hated character for me. Zan was amazing as always. I love his dedication and loyalty. If you love vampires, good banter, angst, some spice, and dystopian vibes…give this series a try. I am sad it is over, but happy to finally get to know the ending.

I’ve been waiting for this book since the last one ended. It did not disappoint. Kay ended this series perfectly.
This book started right where the second one left off.
Kali has discovered she’s a shadow and has no idea what the next step is. She’s already a force to be reckoned with and now she’s learning and feeling all new things. Her development in this book was perfect. I really think Kay wrote this book wonderfully for Kali. I loved watching Kali do everything she needed to do and become who she was always supposed to be.

Kali and Zan are such perfect together and I love it so much. I do wish they had more time together though. I understand why there wasn’t more time and I believe that all the circumstances in this book also made their love even stronger.

I loved this series and think Kay nailed it. Do I get a Viggo story next ?? I’m ready.

What an ending

Bite of Vengeance is the third and final book in this vampire/shadow/human dystopian series.

Everything comes to a head in this book. Kali's whole world is upended as Amaros is determined to use her to control the world. Secrets will be revealed and Kali handles all of it like a champ. She is a warrior and figures out a great solution to her main problem.

Zan is the same man who will do whatever it takes to protect his love. He will sacrifice and fight for his family. Viggo and Pax stand with their brother and all of them struggle to figure out how to keep all of them safe.

The whole concept of the shadows was the best part of this story. It was different and added a lot to this series.

A very satisfying ending to this series. Everything was wrapped up in a great way.

Bite of Vengeance, the last book in Shadow of War.

I think I did myself a disservice by not rereading the first two books in this series before continuing on with the last book in the trilogy.

I was so excited to pick up this book and continue in this world. Kay does a good job of reminding the reader what happened previously (not being info dumpy).

I really enjoyed more backstory of this world learning about the secrecy. we were in introduced to new characters and went on a ‘save the world’ adventure.

Kali really came into her own and the story polished off nicely. She stayed to her truth.

Zan was so swoony and protective in this story and I loved seeing the dynamic relationship between his brother and dad.

This story definately felt high stakes but answered questions I had in the previous story.

This has been an amazing trilogy, I’ve loved Zan and Kali’s fight against almost unsurmountable odds. The story has had so many side plots and twists. I really didn’t see her twin Keeva playing such a major role in this final book, so exciting. We learn more backstory about the twins mother and the prophecy about them. We learn so many truths here about the vampires and Shadows.
The Kane brothers are awesome, love that they’re totally there for each other thru everything and they definitely have some serious stuff to endure in this book.
Had to keep putting this story down every few chapters as there is so much happening, such an action packed plot.
So good to see all that Kali’s been working for coming to fruition. Loved this story and pleased to see Amaros getting his just desserts.

What a rollercoaster! The perfect ending of a great series! I was kept on the edge of my seat, rooting for the HEA that Kali and Zan desperately needed.

Kay Riley has a talent for creating twists in her books that you never see coming until they have hit you square between the eyes, this book is no different.

I am still reeling from the many twists, the discovery about Kali's bloodline, further betrayals, lots of spicy spice. This series is a master piece and i highly recommend it to anyone who loves vampires, war, and romance with dark themes to dive headfirst into this series. It did not disappoint, with this last intallment. It absolutely was the icing on the cake. Immediately adding all 3 books to my reread comfort pile.

Loved it.

I loved this series and will miss the world a lot. It was a good wrap up, but I did wish for a little bit more. It felt a little rushed since majority of the book was action packed and not a lot of deeper conversations. Kali even moved past her anger at Zan and became completely in love with him quickly. I just needed more transition time between everything. I wanted to get more time to talk to Warner about what he was going thru and his change to being a vamp. I really would have enjoyed time with Gia and to hear more about Kali's mom and what she went through. I definitely needed more about Pax and would have loved an epilogue where he finds his happy ever after as well. Overall though I still adore this series and hate saying goodbye to these characters.

First of, I am honored that Kay Riley let me read this ARC. I found her books a while back and fell completely in love with her writing <3

This Trilogy captured my heart from the first page, my obsession over this series rivals ACOTAR, I couldn't put the books down and once I finished them, I kept going back to all my favorite scenes again and again <3

This third and last book was absolute perfection, it hit all the feelings, hurt, stress, sadness, injustice, bravery, love, comradery, friendship and happiness <3

I'm putting the book down now, but this story will never leave my heart <3

I can't wait for my next reread.

Thank you so much Kay Riley <3 <3 <3

I’m so sad this series is over BUT what an ending!

I loved Zan and Kali, across the three books they have been through absolute chaos together. They both fought battles for love and loyalty and I’m glad they finally got their ending!

Zan is everything. He’s a dangerous vampire, mysterious, extremely loyal and obsessed with the one girl he can’t have but he’s taking anyway. Kali is a badass, she took no shit from anyone and always stood for what she believed in. Zan and Kali are a perfect match and I loved reading how their connection grew across the three books.

I absolutely loved the vampire dystopian world Kay has built and I can’t wait to read more of her books!

A another great end to another series by Kay.
This book has lots of plot twists and turn’s that I never seen coming. I love how different and unique this vampire world was, it kept it very interesting.
We get tons of interesting answers, some yummy spice and Kali turns into a bigger baddie than I ever would have thought.

My only thought is I wish the relationships and friendships had a little more depth in this last book. It was very story driven and less about why we loved Zan and Kali in the first place.

This was such a great end to an amazing series.

Bite of Vengeance is the last book in the trilogy following Kali, our FMC, and Zan, our MMC. It picks up right where the second book left off. I loved the connection between Kali and Zan, and the banter between the characters.
There were so many twists and turns throughout this book - I didn’t want to put the book down and return to real life!

Although I’m sad to say goodbye to Kali, Zan and their world, I’m so excited to see what’s coming next from Kay.

Bite of Vengence by Kay Riley is the third book in the Shadows of War trilogy. This one picks up right where book two ended. I really enjoyed getting to see how Kali and Zan's relationship continued to grow. There were plot twists that I didn't see coming that happened in this book. I also really like how we got more of a backstory on Kali's mom. I really enjoyed how this series ended. I'm sad that this story is ending because I adore these characters. I am excited to see what Kay works on next, though.

Wow! I know I say this about all her books but this one is just as amazing! As always a perfect end to an amazing story! I love all the twists and turns (especially the ones I didn’t see coming) and the betrayals always hurt in the best way. I really wanna see more of Kali and Zan in the future. And we all love happing endings (even if your not sure they will get there 😉)

As always another amazing book by Kay Riley!!! I absolutely love the details and depth we get in these stories and how much of a hold these characters get on you.
We pick up right where we left off. Kali learns so much about herself and her mother in this book. Her bond with Zan grows, and Viggo and Pax add so much to the story. The family dynamics, the trust, the power. The way all the characters grow, the twists, the battles, ugh I didn’t want it to end.

Trapped between humans and vampires, Kali is the key to war, and everyone wants a piece of her. The one person she thought she could trust? Zan. He saved her, then shattered her, and now he wants back in.

This book is dark, intense, and packed with betrayal, forbidden passion, and high-stakes danger. Bite of Vengeance is a must-read if you love broody, morally gray vampires, fierce heroines, and tension so thick you could cut it with a fang. Sink your teeth into this one now!

I am so happy with the way this story concludes. This was a highly anticipated read for me and I feel so fulfilled with how it all came together.
There was a lot of story weaving that Kay Riley did to pull all of these elements together and deliver each kernel of the story just at the right time. It was so beautifully done.
This paranormal dystopia style trilogy brought action, mystery and romance together in a way that satisfied so many parts of my brain.

I crushed the first two books of this series. Book 3 dragged along a bit for me. I still enjoyed it but i it think things could’ve been wrapped up sooner. I would’ve liked to see more than just one small epilogue of a happy ending. They have been through so much i deserve to see them happy for at least a few chapters. Also a few things just came out of nowhere. Great series all together. I despise her twin and Zan is perfection.

What an excellent conclusion to Zan and Kali's story!
It grabbed my attention right away and had me hooked until the end!!
With twists and turns, and edge of your seat moments!
We also got action, some humor, spice, and revelations!
Zan and Kali had this undeniable chemistry and the way they stood beside each was everything!
I will forever love their trilogy!
