Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
As this book opens, Agent Smith brings Lydia for a visit with the girls before taking her to live with her grandmother in a nearby town. and no further warlocks will be placed here. He also wants Kinsley to go with him to the Paranormal Affairs Bureau, Thorn, Meri and Kinsley quickly put a stop to that.
We get to see some normal domesticity with Kinsley and the girls as Thorn leaves help county with a traffic accident. Kinsley calls her Mom to watch them so she can go do inventory at Summoned Goods and Sundries.
When Kinsley enters the shop, Reggie her best friend and manager is in a heat encounter with local witch, Delia Ainsworth. Delia uses the encounter to tell the coven to boycott the store. That coupled with Kinsley's separation from the coven after bringing Meri back has Kinsley a bit melancholy wondering if the rift can be mended.
Now I don't exactly understand why Thorn would call Kinsley to tell her Amos Weatherly has been murdered, but he does and tells her not to come to the site. Kinsley agrees to stay away, at least for now. That's so very out of character for her and Meri.
In spite of herself Kinsley finds herself gathering clues from around town, which gives her a couple of leads. The first being Amos's son Jace who was seen in a heated argument with him not long before.
The pull to investigate proves to be too much for Kinsley and she goes to Amos's farm, where Meri joins her. The air is heavy with dark magic, but it's wild and untamed. In the barn Meri discovers a clue, one that Thorn will need to be given.
A visit to Lilith reveals a rare plant that is somehow connected. They also discover Rowena Ravencroft's familiar spying on them as Meri gives chase. Although it gets away, Kinsley gains help from Dorian. He's more than willing to investigate around the time of the murder looking for clues.
Reggie recalls being near the farm the day Amos died and saw Silas Blackwood arguing with someone. Unfortunately, she couldn't hear what was said or see who else was involved.
We see pretty much everyone in this book and there are many surprises including a newcomer, Ezra Darkwood. Kinsley continues to try to make amends to the Coven even as the investigation leads to the possibility of one of them being involved.
I couldn't put this book down, and I look forward to reading more.
I'm so very glad Sara took the time to reevaluate and start again from where her life and her muse went off course. Thank you, Sara.
This is a slightly darker but entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Kinsley is a witch in a town called Coventry. At one time she was the head of her Kevin in that town. Due to circumstances she had to step down and now her mother is the head of the cabin. There has been a murder in there town and Kinsley is trying to stay out of it and let her husband the sheriff figure it out. Yet bit by bit she is being drawn into it. With the assistance of her familiar Mary a black cat that has been in her family for generations. as well as the advice and help of a few of her friends Kinsley is investigating to see what is going on. No spoilers but Kinsley is going to be up against a major challenge. Read on to see if she can make it through and figure out the mystery and try and save the day.
Wow. Talk about a solid book. I know that Ms. Bourgeois had some personal things come up within the last year and acknowledged that her previous couple/few books in this series were subpar. Something that - mostly - I agreed with. She's back on keel now though! This was a solid, sensical, fun and entertaining story. Kinsley interacted with all her friends, her family and her coven as expected given each situation. The mystery was quite good and Meri's snark was back - front and center. I also liked the multiple POVs thrown in. I do so hope we get to find out more about this Ezra person. Seems a little dodgy to me. I also liked that Kinsley was back to being a part of both of her businesses as opposed to only owning them and doing whatever else to fill her day. I'm looking forward to the next book and hope that it is of equal or greater measure than this one was.
If you actually named a plant in the second chapter, calling it "the rare herb" in all the subsequent chapters is stupid, and bad, repetitive writing. Especially if it's *always* "the rare herb," and never just "the herb" or "the plant." At this point, I'd even welcome "the evil vegetation used for the blackest of magics," if it meant I didn't have to read "the rare herb" again.
Very crazy. There are a lot of unanswered questions for me, and I don’t understand where Thorn was for much of the investigation that Kingsley was doing with Meri. Normally he’d be around just to tell her to be careful. And were the kids with her mother? Just some things that didn’t quite jive for me, but the book and the mystery were still really good. I intend to keep reading this series!
I enjoy this series more with every book! And, as usual, I can't wait to jump on to the next book! Interesting premise & stories, good character development, fun interaction between the folks in the stories! An excellent Summer read & exactly the perfect amount of escapism! So do yourself a favor & jump in with Kinsley & Meri!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. It was an interesting mystery with black magic roots that takes the combined efforts of Kinsley, Meri and Ezra to stop and expose with Lilith's guidance. The end may not be open to all but it is finished for now.
I love this series so much! Sadly, this book seemed rushed when it got to about 30% of the ending and I noticed so many details overlooked and things that didn't make sense. I hope this is just a one time thing and doesn't happen again in any of the books.
I enjoy this series, but---- I am not reading anymore of this series for a while. I like it, but the repeated adjectives/adverbs drive me crazy. I report them and frequent typos to Kindle, but have yet to see any improvement. I hope to return sometime, but there are too many well crafted books waiting to spend anymore time on this series.
The plot just keeps getting deeper and more twisted. It is making it hard for me to stop and read something else. I don't want to run out of books to read in this series.
