Can a feisty blonde tame a rough and tumble saloon owner?
Susanna Hampton, the youngest of the Hampton sisters, is quite content to take care of her sister’s two young children. A chance encounter with a little thief, who shamelessly steals candy from the mercantile, leads her straight into a confrontation with the boy’s father, Russell Wade, who is new to town and the proprietor of a notorious saloon. She finds him abrasive and rude, although there is something in his manner that intrigues her.
Russell Wade is a hard-living businessman, who is haunted by the past, and he continues to run from it, moving from town to town, uprooting his children. His daughter, Grace, befriends the lovely Miss Hampton, and seeing Susanna often begins to wear away at his resolve to never trust another fickle woman.
Yet, after his long-missing wife suddenly appears again, albeit ill from consumption, the family is forced to mourn her, and Russell must face his fears or risk losing Susanna, whom he has come to adore. Through the twists and turns of love, two people, who truly belong together, will find themselves happily situated.

This is a sweet, adventurous, exciting and a bit sad love story. Russell is the owner of one of the towns saloons. He has two children a teen age girl and a young mischievous boy not yet a teen. Susanna is the youngest of the preachers stepchildren. She befriends Russell’s daughter against the wishes of her sister Mary. The younger brother is banned from the mercantile for petty theft for stealing candy. You will enjoy reading this entertaining tale.
This book was good. Not top-notch, but it is an easy read. Susannah and Russell are obviously attracted to each other. He comes off as a grizzly bear. Very rough and difficult. In a way, I would also describe him as aloof. He's had his heart broken by a wife who did not love him enough to stick around. Susannah also understands heartbreak and betrayal, but she chose to love again. Moving on is always hard, no matter the circumstances. Carre White is a great author, but this book just doesn't grab me.
This book is good for young adults to those of us not as young. Learning the trials of our westward expansion and the deep faith that seems to be missing in our current lives.
