How far would you go to save the ones you love?

Eben Savage’s life looks a little different these days. He has a boyfriend, a pack of wolves, and magic stolen from his evil uncle. All he wants to do is run under the moonlight with his motley little pack, go on dates with his werewolf boyfriend, and be left alone.

But kisses and games of werewolf tag have to be set aside when a new threat comes to town, and the pack’s very existence is threatened by multiple new enemies. Hunters, mages, and dangerous werewolves are all out for blood, and desperation will drive Eben to do drastic things to save his family. All choices have consequences, and Eben’s are catching up to him.

Hunter’s Moon is the enchanting second installment of the Magic and Moonlight series. The story is as compelling as the first, filled with adventure and suspense as we follow Eben and his friends as they face a new rival pack, hunters, and the consequences from Eben’s actions in the first book. Yarrow’s writing is incredible as always and it’s easy to get immersed in the supernatural worlds that she creates.

This story’s biggest shortcomings all stem from the limitations of the book format. I sincerely believe that Eben’s story would have greatly benefitted from a longer series format with each arc being broken up into several shorter books. As someone familiar with the original stories when they were posted on FictionPress, I was disappointed to find that the book cuts out a lot of what felt like essential scenes that served to define characters and show their development throughout the story. Without those scenes, a lot of the characters feel one-dimensional and their actions inconsequential. I would have liked more time for the characters to breathe in between plot points, and more depictions of the characters existing beyond constantly fighting the next big bad.

Despite everything, though, I do genuinely think the book is worth a read. Eben is still a lovable character and the wit is unmatched. The magic in this world has only gotten better over time and I am continuously waiting for what will happen next. It fills me with immeasurable warmth to see the stories I read growing up develop into full blown novels.

I feel like this one suffered a pacing issue much more than the first book, most likely because of how much it had going on. All three problems happening at once was a very neat idea but the execution wasn't amazing. It felt like the minute a problem came up it was nicely solved and tied off with a pretty bow, which is not great for the sake of building tension.
The hunters? One instance of fighting and then it was literally never a problem again. We barely even learned anything about the twins other than they've had a Tragic Backstory related to werewolves and that's such a shame because they had a lot of potential. At least with Gunnar we had the chance to see something because he had a little more screen time but I know absolutely nothing about Camilla.
The mages were just a very convenient solution to literally every plot line that would've taken time to resolve, prove me wrong. They had a single moment of tension and from that point on they just came in to clean up every other problem.
The other werewolf pack is the only thing that really had a chance to cause any issues and even that was meh because Eden was gone for like, what, 2 days? Maybe a little less? And I will say, I do normally enjoy getting to see Drystan pov but if they'd waited until after Eben was back? Would've been a lot more interesting.
I do enjoy KT Yarrow books, and I'll probably continue the series because nostalgia if nothing else, but this really should've had an extra 100-200 pages or should've been split into two books.

Now this last thing isn't related to my judgement on the book itself in any way so feel free to skip if you're looking for my review on what we've been given, I just need to rant about this because I'm so devastated about it. This book, when it was published online, handled Ebens time with the werewolves and his time after so perfectly that I would use it as reference for any character in any other media with ptsd. Originally, Eben was with them for about a week, and you could really tell that this was a lasting scar. He came back harder, he had nightmares, he had all kinds of physical trauma that forced him to relive the kidnapping, his relationship with Drystan was suffering, the whole nine yards. In this version Eben came back and had one bad night then electrocuted a werewolf exactly one time, that was the extent of the lasting damage done to this 17 year old after being kidnapped and tortured for over 24 hours. It's not realistic (yes, I know, it's a fantasy novel but stick with me), it's boring quite frankly and it really just added nothing to the plot. Like, why did Eben get kidnapped? It didn't cause any lasting issues, barely caused any issues in the moment, we didn't even really get to see any development with Quentin or Lucy so truly, what was the point. I genuinly almost stopped reading there because this was my absolute favorite book, published or not, before all of that was edited out and I'm so mad because I've seen the potential this plot held. Truly I just need either KT or the publisher to allow more time for all of these issues because the plots haven't been well flushed out, characters have no room to thrive, and this series is officially boring me to tears.

Disclaimer: I read the original version that was published on FictionPress, which has impacted my review.

I love KT Yarrow’s work, and I enjoyed getting to dive into Eben and Drystan’s world again. Plus, it’s fun how the Worldbuilding continues with both the enemy pack, the hunters, and the magic world.

One thing that hurts the story is that a lot was cut out of the original story, which makes certain events feel rushed. I would’ve enjoyed this a lot more if the book was split into two, which would allow us to know Gunnar and Camilla better, feel that Avery wasn’t just a convenient finder spell for Eben, and the impacts of being kidnapped could be further explored.

Additionally, when Eben is kidnapped, he’s told that Drystan is killed, but we immediately see that Drystan is okay because of the POV shift. To be more emotional, it would have been better to not show Drystan is okay until Eben himself knows.

Despite this, I’m looking forward to book three!

Hunter's Moon . . .

Eben Savage has many things coming at him in this second book of the series. He would very much like to be left alone by outsiders as he enjoys time with his boyfriend, his pack, and the magic he stole. But now his troubles are starting to converge on him as payback threatens from a rival pack, hunters, and mages who all want him dead. Can he save the ones he loves? Or is his fate finally closing in with no escape?

I think expanding the characters a bit more would help us get to know them and would pull the reader into the story better. But the basic story line itself was good.

this had everything that I was hoping for from a sequel to the Magic and Moonlight series. It had a great overall feel to it and worked with the world that was created. KT Yarrow has a great writing style and I enjoyed how strong the overall feel of everything worked. The characters were what I was hoping for and glad they worked well overall together. It left me wanting to read more in this world and from the author.

I read book one maybe a month ago and was so disappointed book two wasn’t out yet. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait long!! I couldn’t put it down once I picked it up. It was well written, and I loved everyone’s character development
