When I started reading this book, I didn't know what to expect. It's part tour guide, part historical journal. What it certainly is not is a work of fiction. It is well researched and cites many studies of the various paranormal locations. It is not meant to scare away potential visitors as much as it is to offer them an experience they might not have been expecting when they checked in. The author uses personal experience, interviews with witnesses, and historical fact to highlight the locations.

My favorite "tale" is of three elderly bachelor brothers. One was considered paranoid and one day, he just walked away never to be heard of again. The other two lived basically as hermits until they were found sitting on opposite sides of the fireplace, both deceased. Upon investigation, it was determined that one had died weeks before the other. The story gets stranger when the house is searched, and the body of an elderly woman was found in one of the bedrooms. It is believed that she was the nurse who had been hired decades earlier to take care of their mother before she died. After the funeral, the woman herself had disappeared.

Now, that is a place worth staying at, of only for the tens of acres of woods surrounding the home, now offered as an inn.
