To move forward, she'll have to face the past.

Paige Bennett is fulfilling her childhood dream of working and living on the land as a station hand on Whitetail Ridge. Getting her hands dirty, riding horses, working with cattle and kicking up red dust. Life can't get much better. Or so she thinks, until a devastating act of violent betrayal leaves her unemployed, homeless and broken.

A fight with his father drove Jackson Brady off Karilga, his family's cattle station in the Queensland outback. Now he's made a life for himself away from the land, joining a band and settling into the city. When the girl he's always had his eye on shows up with news from back home, he's faced with a difficult go home where he's needed or stay where he's wanted.

Winding up on Karilga Station, Paige is a shadow of the person she once was. Desperate to forget what happened to her, she considers leaving her beloved channel country. But things aren't so easily forgotten in the outback. When fate gives her no option but to trust again, will she find love as well? Or at least a safe place to land?

Jackson knows he's never been more to Paige than a country larrikin who only takes the beer at the end of the day seriously - a sentiment closely echoed by his father. Can Jackson prove himself to his father and become the man Paige needs him to be? Or will it all crumble in the red dirt of the outback?

A heartfelt, deeply emotional story about finding home, facing the past and falling in love, from a captivating new voice in rural romance.

EXCERPT: Paige's voice kept playing in his mind, eating at him. Do the right thing, Jackson. The right thing. What even was the right thing? He rolled his eyes. This was the answer she wanted him to give - coming home. So, it must be the right thing.
Right?

MY THOUGHTS: Wow! I wasn't expecting a novel as powerful as this! I thought I was getting an Australian outback romance - and I did, but it was so very much more. Renae Black exercised all my emotions from laughter to tears and everything in between.

The author has written a content warning at the very beginning of the book as the book is written in the spirit of the #metoo movement. Her inspiration for Paige's character came from the many women the author has worked with in her role as a social worker; women who have experienced 'horrific trauma in their lives' but have moved forward to a brighter future. 'Paige is a fictional character, not based on any one of them, but she captures a piece of all of them.' Red Dirt Home also contains a sexual assault which, while not depicted on the page, may be distressing to some readers because of the lead-up to the event and the emotional journey that follows. (ABRIDGED).

Renae Black has conveyed the shame and the fear that stops victims from reporting their assault to the police and how having someone who believes in them helps them move forward. All during this part of the book, I was choked up. I couldn't bear to put down my Kindle because I just had to know that there was going to be a positive outcome for Paige, despite the fact that she was keeping herself distanced from everyone, even pushing away her friends.

The impact of the assault on Paige's life was devastating. She started second-guessing herself, blaming herself and lost all confidence. She shut herself off from everyone; isolating herself, scared that people would judge her as, indeed, some did.

Red Dirt Home is a powerfully emotional read. It is beautifully written and kept me engrossed throughout. It is not a dark book, but one that has plenty to offer, describing life on an outback cattle station, the supportive relationships that are formed, so necessary when living in such isolated conditions. There is a wonderful romance and plenty of heartwarming moments.

If you are looking for a book with a little romance but a lot of heart, this is it. Kudos to the author for tackling a difficult subject head on in an empathetic, inspiring and constructive way.

Although this is the second book in a series, it is easily read as a stand-alone. This was my first book by this author but I will definitely be reading more from her.

THE AUTHOR: My family stretches back to at least three generations of farmers on both my mum and my dad’s side. I spent my formative years, growing up on a property north of Wagga Wagga, NSW that bred cattle and hosted the odd ostrich sale. My childhood was littered with animals – working and house dogs, the odd run in with a brown snake or two, an injured cockatoo, a long neck turtle and later a cockatiel named Harry who called everyone “Gorgeous”. That’s only a handful!

I strongly believe that farm life, and small town living gets under your skin and never actually leaves you. (Source: renaeblack.com)

Paige Bennett is employed as a station hand on Whitetail Ridge in Western Queensland, Australia. Paige loves her job, riding horses and her best friend Ryan works next door and he’s a helicopter pilot. One night her life is turned upside down, she’s attacked by a person Paige thought she could trust and she loses her job.

After having a big fight with his father Marcus, Jackson Brady leaves Karilga, and is enjoying playing in a band in Brisbane. When he receives bad news about his Dad, Jackson's faced with a difficult choice to make and of course he goes home. Paige has always thought Jackson was irresponsible, didn’t take things seriously, lazy and more interested in chasing women and drinking beer than doing a hard day's work?

With Marcus out of action and his wife Ange staying with him, they need extra help at Karilga and Jackson employs Paige. No one else seems to notice, but she’s very quiet, and looks really tired and Jackson's worried about her. Paige is having nightmares about what happened and can't sleep, she's been looking at job ads and is considering leaving the channel country.

Jackson wants to prove to his father that he’s finally gown up and he's reliable and with the help from the staff at Karilga, he starts running the station and getting it ready for when his father returns and he’s not sure what sort of reception he’s going to get from his old man.

Paige has to learn to trust again, and she shocked when it’s Jackson who's the one to support her and makes her feel safe, and does she have courage to go one step further and report the incident?

I received a copy of Red Dirt Home by Renae Black from NetGalley and Harlequin Australia in exchange for an honest review. I read and enjoyed Ms. Black’s previous book in the series On the Down Low and it was great catching up with the interesting mix of Aussie characters again, Marcus, Ange, Ryan, Hallie, Alice, Charlie, Cookie, Jonno, Danni and all the kids and I must admit I didn’t really like Jackson before.

Some Australian blokes can take a while to grow up, they drink too much and only want to have a good time and move on. This sums up the old Jackson, but on the other hand when you’re family own a property for generations, it puts a lot of pressure and expectation on the person who’s going to inherit it and they don’t want to be the one to fail and stuff it up.

An emotional and well written narrative by Ms. Black, her story includes topics that have to be handled tactfully and with sensitivity, violence against women, sexual abuse, bullying in the work place and the victim thinking no one will believe them if they speak up and it feels like the perpetrator has all the power.

Five stars from me, and Renae Black is the newcomer in Australian rural fiction and she certainly has what it takes to be successful author and I look forward to reading her next novel.

When Paige Bennett left Whitetail Ridge where she'd been a station hand and loving her work, she was shattered. She didn't know where to head to next - was Mount Isa in far north Queensland beckoning? Or should she head to her parents? It was while she was driving and pondering that she received a phone call. Enough to turn her around, she headed to Karilga Station where her best friend since forever, Ryan, was working. Paige didn't know how long she'd stay but for now she could continue the work she loved.

The son of Karilga Station, Jackson Brady, had recently arrived back at the station after spending the last few months in the city. His father had suffered a bad accident, and Jackson saw his chance to make a difference; to help at Karilga and prove to his father that he had what it took. Jackson had also had a "thing" for Paige for a long time. But she kept everyone at arm's length, not allowing anyone to come close. Would Paige be able to let go of her past? She needed to, to have any future...

Red Dirt Home is my first by Aussie author Renae Black and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rural romance with plenty of twists, tension and heartache as finding herself was essential to Paige. Highly recommended.

With thanks to HarperCollins AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

I read Renae Black’s debut book, On The Down Low and absolutely loved it and I was thrilled to read her second book set again in the Channel Country in outback Queensland, we met both Jackson Brady and Paige Bennet in that story, and I wasn’t sure about Jackson being a hero in his own story but I was so wrong, come along for this heartfelt and moving story that will make you cry and smile.

Paige is loving her life on the land working at Whitetail Ridge, the horses, cattle and land are in her blood and she is thrilled to be here but when she is violated in the most terrible of ways she is left a broken woman with no job and no home, she can’t go home to her family.

Jackson has worked hard to prove himself on the family cattle station Karilga but he and his father seem to see things differently and after a huge fight Jackson leaves and finds himself in the city in a band and he is thoroughly enjoying himself, that is until, the woman he has always had feelings for arrives with news that is not good and she advises him to go home.

Paige arrives at Karilga station looking to help them out when they need more workers and Jackson is more than happy to give her a job but he feels that there is something very different about Paige that she is struggling with something and he aims to find out without pushing too hard. Paige loves this country life and soon opens up to Jackson about what happened and Jackson steps up to be the best person for Paige, will they find the love they deserve and will Jackson finally prove to his father that life at Karilga is what he truly wants?

I loved this one from the start and found it very hard to put down it is beautifully written with empathy and such care and we see Paige work hard to put the past behind her with the help of Jackson and we also see Jackson become the best hero and son with Paige together they are sure to move to a fabulous future. This one made me cry but also had me cheering them on. It was great catching up with the wonderful characters from Karilga as well.

I do highly recommend this, it is an awesome romance, it has a bit of everything in it from a beautiful romance to drama, danger and suspense, a must read.

My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my copy to read and review.

**Thank you to Harlequin Australia for sending me a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review; published 6 March 2024*

The Australian rural romance scene has gained a new author and I have no doubt she will have a strong following with stories like this one. This book follows Paige and Jackson who are both dealing with some personal issues and while they do know already know each other, they are now growing close as they try to get through these rough times in their lives. My criticism would be that for me the storyline felt a touch dramatic at times, the best way I can describe it is like a soap opera drama feel. I've noticed a similar thing with a few books in this genre where sometimes when there are darker elements it just feels slightly melodramatic at parts. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just not what I'm particularly looking for when I pick up a rural romance.
Overall: if rural romance with a drama feel is your thing, this one will please you as it has for many readers - the reviews so far are extremely positive.

Where do I start with this book? This was a book that I simply couldnt put down. Outstanding. It was so much more than a rural romance. It was thought provoking especially with such a serious and sensitive topic. Most of the characters were loyal, supportive and loving. I really loved the chemistry between Jackson and Paige. It had me feeling alot of emotions ranging from anger to love.

All Paige Bennett wanted to do when she grew up was to live and work off the land. Currently employed as a station hand at Whitetail Ridge, she's fulfilling that childhood dream. Life simply can't get any better until one night, Paige is violated in the most awful way by someone she thought she could trust.

Immediately left jobless, homeless, and broken hearted, Paige simply has no idea where to turn. Returning to her parents in Mount Isa is an option, same with trying her luck elsewhere. Luckily, best friend Ryan phones whilst she's on the road, solving the dilemma. The owner of the neighbouring property, Karigla, has been involved in a terrible accident, and reinforcements are needed. Even though Paige can't stand Jackson, the boss's son, she willingly accepts the job, knowing full well that she can't possibly stay in the area forever, not with her attacker so nearby. No one knows the real reason why she left Whitetail, and she plans for it to stay that way. After all, who would believe her, ruining a seemingly good blokes reputation?

Meanwhile, Jackson Brady has obligarity returned home to Kaligra after his father's accident. For the past year, he's been part of a band in Brisbane, so far removed from the life he left behind after an argument with his Dad. Jackson's renowned for being the prankster and party boy, unable to take things seriously. Now, here's his chance to prove to himself and his father that he can be responsible, taking over the management single handily. Better yet, Paige Bennent has just joined the crew- but there's something terribly amiss with her. Even though they parted on less than good terms last time they met, Ryan can't resist that urge to get closer and protect Paige with everything he's got. But will Paige ever feel able to let him in and let go?

Red Dirt Home is something that's been on my radar for a while, and didn't it live up to the hype? Renae Black is a new voice to Australian rural fiction, and oh boy, she really can spin a yarn that'll cut your heart to pieces only to sew it up again with a happily ever after ending. It is a tough read, given that rape trauma takes precedence, but that sheer tenderness emitting from Jackson more than makes up for it. I think I fell a bit in love with Jackson, too, by the end!

I didn't know that this was a follow-up to On the Down Low, which is Ryan and Hallie's story! You really don't need to read that first, though, as this serves perfectly well as a stand-alone. In saying that, I'm looking forward to getting around to it!

TW: assault/violence (physical and sexual), mental health breakdowns, rape, slut shaming, trauma

🎑Published in 2024 by HQ Fiction Australia, Red Dirt Home is a rural fiction novel from Queensland based author Renae Black. Red Dirt Home offers readers a poignant account of belonging, coming to terms with past events and the search to find a safe person to open up your heart to.

🎑Red Dirt Home signals my introduction to Renae Black’s writing. As soon as I settled into this one I realised how happy I was to discover a fresh new voice in rural fiction. Black, who works as a social worker by day and turns to romance writing by night, has composed a heartfelt and gritty story for the rural romance genre. I feel this story has to great deal to say about female country-based experiences.

🎑At the core of Red Dirt Home is Paige, a resilient woman in so many ways who is left shaken by a violent act that threatens her livelihood, home, safety, wellbeing and sense of trust. Opposite Paige is Black’s male lead Jackson, who provides a stable and steady presence throughout the progression of the book. What I will emphasis is that Jackson’s care really is the vital piece in Paige’s healing journey. I particularly loved the friends-to-lovers progression between these two. It was a natural and respectful unfolding that felt genuine and rewarding.

🎑 the rural stage of Karilga Station is presented on the page with a deep rooted sense of reality of life that I often felt like I was working alongside Paige and the other hands. So much so that I was tending to cattle, saddling horses and fending off the endless bouts of dust and sweat, as I navigated many long hours of station life. This true picture of the raw and hard physical demands of country work, combined with small town interactions was one of my favourite aspects of the novel.

Aside from the look at work life and the romance elements present in the book, Black explores some important themes. There is the battle between city and country life, the weight of family expectations, the male gaze, misconduct, assault, courage, independence, resilience, emancipation, rebuilding faith, safety and trust. Ultimately, I would describe this narrative as a tale of personal healing, the importance of friendship in our darkest hours, making connection in isolated places, overcoming trauma and stepping up to make stance.

Leah Baulch’s narration added great authentic touch to the story and she managed to draw me in with a voice that ensured the true strength and the tenderness of this story was portrayed to readers.

Red Dirt Home was both an engaging and emotional read, engulfing us in a tale of Paige’s bravery combined with he gentle strength of Jackson, against the natural beauty of rural Australia. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4 stars thank you to @harlequinaus for the copy

Thank you Harlequin for sending us a copy to read and review.
Life on an outback station is tough at the best of times, with its isolation, heat and hard work.
As a result the camaraderie and relationships are essential for successful outcomes. It is also a place where danger in all forms can lurk.
Paige has fulfilled her dream and working on Whitetail Ridge station rewarding her lifelong ambition.
A single night, a single event and a single betrayal shatters her existence and leaves her physically and emotionally vulnerable.
Broken and desperate she finds work and a safety refuge at the neighbouring station. A place where Jackson is negotiating priorities and working relationships with his father.
Navigating his status on the home front and with his feelings for Paige a feat to be conquered.
I read this on International Women’s Day, a day celebrating success and a reminder that safety should be a given.
This story reflects that a violation can have a reverberating repercussion on even those deemed some of the toughest women.
A powerful journey of reclamation and the value of self worth.
A new rural voice has indeed stamped her footprint on the red dirt of our vast land and talented literary sphere.

I finished this book in one sitting and under 5 hours. I literally could not put it down. You know those memes of people just doing menial tasks while reading a book, like making a sandwich and cleaning the house? Yeah that was me. The way Renae has been so gentle and yet so open and transparent about such a touchy subject made me tear up numerous times. During this book I found myself laughing but also found myself so deeply touched by Renae’s portrayal of Paige struggling to process and heal from the trauma she experienced at the hands of another. I found myself rooting for Paige and Jackson from the beginning of the book and really really loved the softer edge she gave to Jackson that I couldn’t see in On the Down Low. Renae always manages to keep me on my toes with the twists in her books and had me on the edge of my seat in Red Dirt Home. The ending was so beautiful I’d be happy with where it leaves all the characters, however I would also welcome another book based on Karilga (nudge nudge Renae) I can’t wait to see what Renae will write next.

This book is a true masterpiece. Renae gave a voice to so many that may have felt they lost there's. She was delicate and caring in her approach whilst addressing the seriousness of the topic. We get to share in the joy of Paige's good moments and then empathise with the harder moments, whilst cheering her on through her strength. Renae showed the strength, courage and resilience whilst also showing the heartache, pain and trauma of so many women's stories. Renae highlights common thoughts of people that have gone through things like Paige and the internal dialogue that a person is left with and shows how it can be challenged by the right people.

Another part of this book that was incredibly written was the side of the support person and how it can be so hard to walk along side someone and respect their views and wishes. It highlights the importance of walking alongside someone during their journey even if you personally think they should do something different. Respecting someone's journey and letting them go through it at their own pace is so important and this is perfectly depicted in this book.

This was an amazing book to read, it has heavy topics but Renae approaches it in such a way that it addresses the seriousness of it all but also shows the soft and good moments, it balances the good and hard moments extremely well. This is more than just your regular romance book, it is an incredible journey of self discovery, strength, heartache, love and not allowing a moment in your life to define you. Highly recommend reading this.

What a fabulous rural romance Renae Black has delivered with Red Dirt Home. It was that good that I devoured it in one evening.

Jackson and Paige were the perfect leads for this story. Both hardworking, fun and with a deep love for the land that you felt a connection with throughout.

A fight with his father drove Jackson Brady away from his family's cattle station in outback Queensland. When the girl he's always had his eye on shows up with news from back home, he's faced with a difficult choice: go home where he's needed or stay where he's wanted.

Paige Bennett is fulfilling her childhood dream of working and living on the land until a devastating act of violent betrayal leaves her unemployed, homeless and broken. Winding up on Karilga Station, helping Jackson, Paige is a shadow of the person she once was and is desperate to forget what happened to her.

Black has somehow tackled the sensitive topic of sexual assault in such a respectful and thought provoking manner in this novel. While the assault itself is not on the page you go through all of the emotions with Paige after the fact that really tugs on your heartstrings.

Jackson does his best to prove himself and his dedication to his father while also trying to become the man Paige needs him to be, but he feels he’s failing in both fronts.

I don’t often comment on my favourite quotes from books, but this one from Jackson’s perspective has really stuck with me. ‘Closing his eyes, he sighed. He’d never imagined falling in love would be so lonely.’ 🥺

Loved it and highly recommend Red Dirt Home.

Red Dirt Home was unlike other Australian books set in the country and outback that I had read. Renae Black drew on her generational experience from living on working farms in Australia to set the scene for this novel.

Paige is a young up and coming station hand who unfortunately is attacked violently by someone she thought she could trust, leaving her in a state of shock and betrayal. This attach echoes through her life and work, making it very hard for her to centre herself on Karilga Station, working alongside Jackson whom she had know for years before as  someone who never really took life seriously. Yet it is the impact of the trauma and violence that she experienced that seemed to follow her sound in all the work she conducted; tarnishing her reputation and her love for working as a station hand. The book explored the trauma and shame of not wanting to report the attack to police or anyone she felt safe with, which is such a present day occurrence for women who are attacked by perpetrators who believe that violence is their point of control.

The book also explored where connection and love grow and emerge when trust is proven, and respect is earned and forged. Being able to overcome the past for both Paige and Jackson was important to this story, especially reflecting on the holistic repercussions of the impact of violence on women who look like they have a tough exterior.  Both of these characters seem to grow as individuals, as colleagues, and reclaim their worth as individuals.

Thanks to @harleqiun books for the copy of his book!

Red Dirt Home is an excellent Australian rural romance by Renae Black. Paige Bennett has always wanted to work on a rural property, and when she gets a position as a station hand at Whitetail Ridge, she thinks her life is complete. However, when violent trauma happens to her at Whitetail Ridge, she loses her job and becomes homeless. At the neighbouring property, Karilga, the owner, had a significant accident, and the elder son, Jackson Brady, comes home to take charge until his father comes home. However, when Paige accepted the position at Karilga, could she forget what happened to her at Whitetail Ridge and work with Jackson Brady? The readers of Red Dirt Home will continue to follow Paige Bennett and Jackson Brady to discover what happens.

I had not read any of Renae Black's books before Red Dirt Home, and I was impressed with the characters and the story. I also added Renae Black to my list of authors. I engaged with this book from the first page, which continues to the end. I enjoyed Renae Black, including her story on some societal issues that affect women in society. I love Renae Black's portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other. Red Dirt Home is well-written and researched. I like Renae Black's description of the settings of Red Dirt Home, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Red Dirt Home will learn about working as a station hand in rural cattle stations and understand the importance of safety on rural properties.

I recommend this book.

"I just finished reading "Red Dirt Home," Renae Black and it was an incredible story with well-developed characters. The book tells a powerful, emotional tale about love, family, and overcoming challenges. As a rural romance, it kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning pages to find out if the characters would get their happy ending. The story was full of depth and real-life drama which made it a satisfying read.

Paige Bennett, who works as a station hand at Whitetail Ridge in Queensland, originally had a happy life growing up in Mount Isa. However, due to a traumatic event, she lost not only her job and home but also her self-confidence and trust in others. Despite her struggles, when she learns about a situation at the Karilga station where her best friend Ryan Walker works, she offers to lend a hand. She is uncertain whether she can keep her personal secret from her best friend and still remain in the place she loves - the land.

Jackson Brady was born and raised at Karilga station until a fight with his father drove him to the big city of Brisbane. When his father is injured, Jackson must decide whether to return home to help run the station or stick with his band, which is gaining popularity in the Brisbane pub scene. As he struggles with this decision, Paige shows up to help, and he can't help but be drawn to her.

Such a great read with loveable characters, at times very frustrating. Held my breath at times, and yahooing when the hero came to save the day.

I finished it in 24 hrs because I had to see how it played out.

Red Dirt Home was a great portrayal of working on station, I really felt like I got a sense of what it would be like. There were some tough topics tackled, but they were done well and repectfully. I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters - of course the main characters Paige and Jackson, but also the other characters looking out for each other. There were plenty of emotions reading this one, often changing from sadness to happiness. I loved how Jackson was with his younger siblings and what he did for his Dad. Great read.

I didn't realise this was the second in the series until I read the author notes in this one but it definitely worked as a stand alone. Of course now I know there is another I want to go back and read it.

The two main characters of this book are Paige and Jackson. Paige who grew up in Mount Isa and then works on a cattle station experiences an horrific event at the hands of a person she trusted at the time. Jackson is a ladies man who grew up on a different station but has escaped to the city to get away from his family, especially his father. But timing and events bring them together.
There are characters to love and characters to loathe in this story, Paige brings the reader through every emotion, while Jackson takes a bit longer to warm fully to.
Thermo book brings to light many issues that impact on rural life, as well as major worldwide issues such as the Me Too movement. Thermo way it is written brings the characters to life and it was a great book to read.
Thank you to Net Galley and Harlequin Australia for letting me read this book for an honest review.

Seems that I’m very much in the minority here. Romantic fiction has never been my favourite but I found this book quite superficial and the writing akin to that of a school student. There were so many inappropriately matched similes and a preponderance of unfortunate adjectives. I did a lot of eye rolling.
How often did “jeans tighten” and “pools reflect deeply in hazel eyes”? Too often for my liking.

This is just the sort of romantic fiction I enjoy most – a genuine story with some real substance to it beyond the romance. It’s believable and moving, while still respecting the tropes of the genre.

Paige Bennett has found her dream job as a station hand at Whitetail Ridge. And then one day an unexpected act of violent betrayal leaves her mentally and emotionally devastated, homeless, and unemployed.

Paige’s best friend works on Karilga Station, which is more or less Whitetail Ridge’s neighbour, with of course significant distances involved. Paige winds up there. She’s uncertain of a lot of things, including how comfortable she might be there in the long term. Not only will she have to deal with her immediate problems, but there’s a long time prickly relationship with the owner’s son to grapple with.

Jackson Brady is a player, and hasn’t shown a lot of commitment to anything. In fact, an explosive argument with his father eight months ago resulted in him being kicked off the station. He’s drawn back at the same time Paige arrives, as the result of a serious accident which incapacitates his father. He’s always been attracted to Paige, but she’s had no interest in being another of his conquests.

This is not just a story of Paige and Jackson’s relationship. It’s also a story of Jackson maturing and growing into his potential, and of Paige learning to deal with an all too common trauma.

This is a sensitively written novel. Black walks the line between explicit and too reticent with great tact. Throughout the novel, Paige’s feelings and reactions are treated with great compassion. Some might say that some of this is resolved a bit too quickly, but that’s merely a function of the time frame of the novel. It’s certainly not painted as easy.

Similarly, Jackson’s story is also quite compressed, though in his case that’s in part because it’s been forced on him by his father’s accident. I found it credible, and again Black treats him with considerable compassion and a lack of judgement.

The majority of characters are very empathetic, and all are realistic and strongly drawn. Despite a strong plot, I felt this was a very character driven novel. Most readers will care about the characters, and be drawn into their stories quickly and easily.

This novel should appeal strongly to most romance readers. It should also appeal to readers who like character based stories, including people who turn up their noses at romance as too shallow or cliched. Neither accusation could be leveled at this very enjoyable novel.

What can I say but WOW !!!

I didn’t know what to expect when I received this book, but what I didn’t expect was to be taken on such an emotionally captivating journey, and I attribute it all to the amazing writing skill of Renae Black. This rural romance has some very strong topics but Renae has written then very tactfully and with great sensitivity.

The settings are described beautifully, letting me have a sense of actually being right there and witnessing the vastness, isolation and beauty for myself. I could almost feel and smell the red dirt.

The characters have been created with such strength, including Paige and Jackson, who are the two main characters that we witness the events unfolding through their eyes. Karilga Station staff are so much more than just a group of workers, more than just a group of friends, they are family, and family are always there for each other, and Paige finds her family.

If you’ve grown up in the country, or just spent a significant amount of time there, then you probably know a “Paige” or “Jackson”. Paige is a strong country gal who knows what she wants and how to work hard to get where she wants to be, with a love of the country that will always be part of her, body and soul. Jackson is the country guy that likes to have fun and doesn’t always make sure responsibilities come first. After lifechanging events, both Paige and Jackson have their lives shaken up and are thrown together, with some very surprising results.

Red Dirt Home is a book that will give you much more than you expect, and I am so thrilled that I have had to opportunity to experience it for myself. It has drama, romance, adventure, thrills, tragedies and triumphs, plus so much more. I can’t recommend this one highly enough.

Red Dirt Home has been a thoroughly upifting story, though it starts off with some fairly shocking events. If rape or sexual assault is a trigger for you then I’d proceed with caution. That said, Paige’s story from that point on shows her inner strength and resiliance, characteristics that are brought out by the support she receives from Jackson and the family and community at Karilga Station, where she ends up working after leaving Whitetail Ridge. Jackson very quickly endeared himself to me, not just because of his looks, though they definitely helped. He came onto the page with a bad boy reputation, but it as clear from the moment he returned home that he had a strong sense of responsibility and cared deeply for his family. This is a story of healing, support and belief but it lso showcases Queensland’s outback superbly. I loved reading about the big family mealtimes, but the dirt, the Mitchell grass and the various animals that popped up all helped to paint the picture. I was quickly immersed in the book and ended up reading it through the night. I will definitely be looking for more from this author.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Australia for the chance to read this book.

Trigger warning - this story features rape.

This story is about Paige and Jackson. They are both strong and independent characters but aren't good at accepting help, leaning on others, or, in Jackson's case, taking criticism.

Paige faces a lot of trauma and change within the story and shows her strength and resilience. Jackson manages to earn her trust and give her friendship to help her heal until she is ready for love. He has his own emotional baggage to work through as well, and after a couple of missteps, he eventually gets there.

The story is hard to read in some sections due to the rape and trauma content, but I think it is handled compassionately.
