As a Yogic science, Vedic Astrology has been practiced for more than 5000 years with one ultimate to provide insight and guidance towards the fulfillment of the soul’s destiny. Vedic Astrology provides a map of the soul’s territory, to quicken the journey and avoid delays in the process. You can learn to read the map of the birth chart and thereby harness the trends of the cosmos. This book is based on a tutorial course, and is arranged to systematically introduce the most important variables necessary to understand a Vedic horoscope. The best way to read this book is to supplement it with Ryan Kurczak's free astrology course online, and then to follow it up with his 101 Astrology class. Ryan is the co-author, and he gives examples using the South Indian chart (while this book uses the North Indian). Ryan's style is practical, simple to understand and essential if you're looking to understand the fundamentals of astrology.
The book is great as it helped me in ynderstanding of the various important aspects of vedic astrology. The only challenge which I faced was with the example charts as instead of the names of the planets their symbols we're used which is little confusing for a beginner like myself. Otherwise, the book is fantastic and I can confidently say that after reading this book my understanding has improved a lot.
A brilliant holistic primer to Jyotisha that not only discusses the mathematical aspects of the subject ( there's a lot) but also the spiritual and scriptural, quoting from several of the classics including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra , Jaimini sutras & Phaladeepika. Kurczak emphasizes the fact that Jyotisha is not just about prediction as is widely believed but also one of the best self improvement tools. The horoscope is a map of your personality, your strengths and weaknesses & most importantly your karmic patterns. Once the pattern is known, Jyotisha also shows you how to overcome it ( if at all it can be, not all karmas can). Kurczak also talks about the outlook a beginning astrologer must adopt, along with practices that aid in sharpening one's intuition ( the other big component of Jyotisha) like yoga, meditation etc. All in all an excellent introduction to the subject for those who wish to delve deeper into it.
"It is important to note that superstitious reliance on astrological information dilutes the potency of the information provided. Looking to the position of the planets for answers to every decision made in life serves no purpose. Self-realized souls are guided by an inner knowing. Prior to Self-realization, we should do everything we can to encourage that inner knowing. If every challenge impels us to consult the planetary transits or the astrological chart, we are not allowing our own inner knowing to develop. When a person is sincerely in need of guidance, an astrologer can provide that guidance."
I wanted to learn about Vedic Astrology, after skimming various, I decided to give it a try because I was able to rent it on Kindle Unlimited subscription. Although writtten by a foreign author, it still covers all the areas of Vedic Astrology from a beginner's perspective. It has been written keeping in mind the readers are novice, making the book simple to understand. Would recommend the book for beginners.
This book addressed a lot of questions that some of the other books did not answer. It covers lot of topics and is sufficient to to provide all all round skill to a budding Astrologer. Good job authors !
An excellent introductory text for those new to the practice. The last chapter on the relationship between Jyotishi and the Yoga Sutras is essential knowledge missing from most other writer’s work.
