In this book of the series the author delves more into the history of the characters and helps the reader understand why their relationships are so inter-mingled and tangled. She provides a window into the trauma that affected many of the characters' lives and how events of the past influence their current decisions, good or bad. Untreated and unresolved trauma wears differently on each of the characters and the reader is taken along in their struggles, feeling empathy and sometimes anger. The author doesn't pull any punches and matches the less broken against the hardest in an attempt to pass through the conflict. Sometimes it touches the outer rim of the source and other times it lives on the edge of the rim. The conflict is real and scary. I'm eager to read the next book in the series to find out how the characters work through their trauma in spite of events that have just happened.
