Growing up
I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. Mary and I would argue about which of us would marry him).

Mary and I were always creating imaginary characters and mimicking real ones, and I used to write shows and choreograph ballets for us. A wind-up gramophone wafted out Chopin waltzes.

I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married.

Busking and books
Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta.

The busking led to a career in singing and songwriting, mainly for children’s television. I became an expert at writing to order on such subjects as guinea pigs, window-cleaning and horrible smells. “We want a song about throwing crumpled-up wrapping paper into the bin” was a typical request from the BBC.

I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs.

One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading.

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes.

I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books.

Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers.

When I’m not writing I am often performing, at book festivals and in theatres. I really enjoy getting the children in the audience to help me act out the stories and sing the songs. When Malcolm can take time off from the hospital he and his guitar come too. and it feels as if we’ve come full circle - back to busking.

This is a lovely upbeat story about a dog who visits people in hospital and cheers them up. It's a very happy story, the rhyming text is fun to read and the illustrations of a very friendly Dalmatian are endearing.

Hospital Dog (2020) is the latest book from Julia Donaldson - this time out without regular stalwart illustrator/collaborator Axel Scheffler.

Whilst I have sometimes been underwhelmed by Donaldson’s books where Scheffler is not onboard - this is not the case here where the lovely (but very different from Scheffler) illustrations by Sara Ogilvie compliment perfectly Donaldson’s rhyming words - their work together here proving to be another winning combination.

‘Hospital Dog’ is a very warm, well intentioned and delivered very lovely story of the joy brought about to the children’s ward by the eponymous Hospital Dog.

Described by The Times as - “the literary equivalent of a giant welcome home wag” which sums up the books appeal pretty well.

If there’s anything sweeter than a story that has a dog in it, it’s hearing it narrated with the same sweetness!!
I love having a happy kids book playing in the background while I’m tidying up.
So… does this count as a guilty pleasure now, zaa?

Meet Dot, a Dalmatian who is superspecial, she is a hospital dog!

I read this book in Dutch but will be writing my review in English. This was just so heartwarming and lovely and now I want a dog even more. XD

Meet Dot, she and her owner Rose may look ordinary and just be a normal owner/dog couple that loves to swim in the sea, but they are superspecial. Because a lot of the time they are visiting a hospital and then especially the children’s ward of the hospital. To bring some happiness to sad, angry, worried, stressed kids. Dot is here for them! I just adore that so much and I was aww-ing A LOT.

The repetition was a bit eh at times, but I didn’t mind it too much especially because it was so cute and so much fun. And I just loved seeing those kids go from worried, frowning, and unhappy to happy and not so stressed out. Plus, the last parts of the hospital visit just made me laugh so hard, seeing Dot in that wheelchair held by one of the kids and then racing around. XD

The latter parts of the book, OH NO. OH NO. I was just crying at that moment. I don’t want to spoil it and the ending of the book made me smile again, but for a bit of the book I was just in tears.

I have to say that I loved the Dutch names (Fiet (dog) and Wil (owner)), but now I see the English names and I just think those are WAY more fitting and WAY more lovely.

The illustrations were just pure perfection, but then again it is all drawn by the super Sara Ogilvie whose art I just adore! It is also one of the reasons I took the book (the other being that it is written by Julie Donaldson).

All in all, a beautiful and fun book about dogs, hospitals, and making people happy. Highly recommended.

4,25 sterren - Nederlandse hardcover

This book brought us smile and has brighten up our days, and it really doesn’t matter whether you are a dog lover or not. We have always been a big fan of Julia Donaldson’s rhyming and whimsical stories. This is another great addition that we really enjoyed reading: - heart-moving, bitter sweet, and creates a chance for interesting discussions with kids.

The story is about a Dalmatian named Dot and her owner Rose, and focuses on their visits to the hospital routinely. We saw children in “Wallaby Ward”, “most of them happy but some of them bored.” We saw some children being shy, some howled, some being cross, and a teenager scowled. Four-year-old little AJ wants to know why the variety of negative emotions, and we got to talk about some of the reasons why the kids needed to stay in hospital: perhaps they were in pain and not feeling too well? Maybe they missed going outdoor?

We love those lovely scenes where Dot the Hospital Dog cheered up the kid one by one. Just a pat, a stroke, a cuddle. Each of the children felt much better, calmer, and happier.

And then came a day, where Dot was being knocked down by a car in an accident (when he was trying to save a kid). When Dot rested at home with her leg in plaster, the hospitals kids came to visit. It was their turn to cheer up Dot who has brought them so much joy in the past.

This is a really nice story with lively illustrations. The story rhymes beautifully, and the story is engaging and makes us smile.

This delightful book is by the creators of # 1 bestselling picture book, "The Detective Dog" - winner of the Books Are My Bag Reader's Award. "The Detective Dog" has sold over half a million copies and has been translated into over 20 languages to date.

Dot, a sweet Dalmatian, and her owner Rose, are doing wonderful volunteer work at their local hospital. Dot loves to go there and offer herself for pats, hugs and companionship to those afraid and hurting in so many different ways.

After the two prepare themselves for their day off they go by bus to the hospital. Wallaby Ward children's wing is waiting for their arrival and are always glad for their visits.

After a successful time of cheering up a diverse group of patients Dot and Rose head back home. Unfortunately an accident occurs and Dot becomes injured. Her brave heart and caring nature brings it about. Will Dot receive the love and support from others that she so deserves?

Written in rhyme the fantastic text is enriched by beautiful ink drawings that are full of action and expression. Thousands of books are being gifted to children in hospitals in partnership with Read for Good. I highly recommend this book.

This brilliant book written by the doyenne of rhyme Julia Donaldson and illustrated by the incredibly talented Sara Ogilvie is based on a real life hospital dog and her owner. This story features, Dot, the Dalmatian and Rose. Together they visit the children in Wallaby ward. Dot becomes everyone’s favourite visitor and a pat, stroke and cuddle with Dot calms anxious nerves, cheers up bored teenagers and soothes a baby’s tears. I just love the idea of a hospital dog bringing such comfort and therapy to others. When Joe, a young deaf patient is leaving the hospital for home, it is up to Dot to save the day! At the end of the story, the kindness Dot has shown to others is beautifully repaid.

We loved the previous collaboration between this pair on 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴 and this book is equally as good. This story was written some time ago inspired by Julia Donaldson’s visit to The Evelina Hospital in London but was recently published and has taken on a new significance with events of this year.

This is a wonderfully illustrated, rhyming story about a dalmatian named Dot. Dot and her owner do everything together, including swimming each day in the sea. They visit the children's ward at the hospital to cheer up the kids. We see many different children with various ailments and reasons for being there. Dot does a great job cheering them up. When Dot risks her life by pushing a boy out of the way of a car, her leg gets broken. Being depressed and sad because she can't do anything, the children she had cheered up all visit to cheer her up. This story is based on a real hospital dog, Nala and her owner Sandy. The text is written in such a fun rhyming pattern, that it made it fun to read aloud. The illustrations by Ogilvie are absolutely amazing and we spent time talking about what we saw. What a great story to share about working animals. I wish all hospitals had hospital dogs to help diffuse some of the anxiety that goes with an illness and stay in the hospital. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.

I love Julia Donaldson's work and this one is no exception! The hospital dog shares the story of Dot, a dog who visits the children at the local hospital. It celebrates the relationship the children and Dot have and how they are there for each other. I particularly like the signature rhyming style of Julia Donaldson and know that it will be a hit with my students and my own children.

A wonderful rhyming book all about Dot, a hospital therapy dog. The rollicking, rhyming text reminds me of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy, and this text can introduce the concept of companion animals and their importance.

Suomenkieliset riimit osuvat ihan kivasti kohdalleen. Satutuntilaiset vaikuttivat tykkäävän kirjasta.

We read the book and followed up by watching lots of Therapy Dogs on YouTube! :D no surprises there, the kids loved reading about Dot and his handler Rose. Super cute book that introduces kids to the concept of service dogs and how being in a hospital is a not pleasant experience. The dogs do bring in some much needed cheer and solace.
