Ancient Clues by Marco Magiolo is an exciting archaeological thriller that blends history, conspiracy, and action into an engaging adventure. The story follows Miami veterinarian Dennis Battenberg, whose quiet life becomes chaotic after he discovers an artefact linked to his missing father. From there, he embarks on a whirlwind journey through ancient sites, uncovering secrets that could change history as we know it.
The book delivers all the hallmarks of a great adventure: mysterious artefacts, secret organizations, high-stakes chases, and a mix of betrayals and alliances. The settings—from the Nazca Lines to Puma Punku—are well-researched and transport the reader straight into the heart of each historical mystery. Magiolo’s descriptions bring these locations to life. While some scenes could have used more depth, the overall world-building is immersive.
Some dialogue feels a little forced, and certain moments seem overly dramatic or rushed. Still, the pacing remains strong, making it hard to put the book down. Fans of Indiana Jones or The Da Vinci Code will appreciate the mix of historical intrigue and modern-day adventure.
Despite a few minor flaws—such as occasional clunky dialogue and moments where the action feels slightly exaggerated—Ancient Clues is a solid, enjoyable read. It’s an engaging mystery that keeps the pages turning, and with a bit of refinement, it could be a top-tier thriller. If you love stories about hidden history, global conspiracies, and high-stakes adventure, this book is worth picking up.

Fans of Indiana Jones, the Tomb Raider series, and Carmen Santiago will love reading Ancient Clues. Dr. Dennis Battenberg is fully involved in his career as an emergency veterinarian in Miami, Florida when he is caught up in a web of international deceit, human disappearances, and terrorism. Intriguing global locations that were very well researched became part of the motivation that kept me turning pages. Marco Magiolo’s characters were realistic, however they didn’t always behave in predictable fashion! Into this backdrop were interwoven plenty of moral dilemmas and family secrets. I truly enjoyed the book and feel that with some additional editing this would make a top-notch action/adventure thriller.

Bravo!

This book has a real page turning quality about it and reminds one of the Da Vinci Code and books of that ilk.
I’m reminded a little of books that I read as a kid when Biggles and his squadron kept getting told: “Crack on Biggles, you’ve only got an hour.” This happened a few times before they found their true destination but what reminds me of this is the hopping about in Peru.
The author is Brazilian, I believe, so it’s interesting that he chose South America to write about.
The story moves from country to country, a bit like some of those Robert Ludlum. The ending was very moving and once again reminded me of a childhood favourite - a Malcolm Saville called ‘Saucers over the Moor’.
Thoroughly enjoyed this read.

Dennis, a small town veterinarian, lived with his grandparents most of his life. His mother disappeared when he was a small child; his father left shortly thereafter in a search for his missing wife. That search took the father around the globe, following conspiracy theories.

There were other homes where family members simply disappeared. Dennis ended up partnering with some of them in his search for his parents.

Have to say that this book has a shocking ending, nothing even close to how I thought the author would close out the story.

Ancient Clues is a global adventure story. Dennis, a Miami veterinarian, involuntarily joins a group of individuals on an ancient clue quest to find loved ones who have gone missing.

I enjoyed the story including learning about places and ancient cultures. I did not anticipate the ending.

Some further editing could have made the book better. For example, while “Bible” and is its books are typically capitalized, that was not always the case in this book.

I do recommend this book to others. I received this e-book through a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you to Marco Magiolo for the book.

An unsought clue inadvertently set Dr. Dennis Battenberg on a search for his parents. The intrigue, mystery, and actions that followed presented a delightful unpredictability that lasted. The global exotic adventures were well described, although the first-person narrative style was daunting. A plethora of characters could be distracting, and tighter editing in revised versions may also be beneficial. It's a good read.

There are so many things I liked about this book! It reminded me highly of Dan Brown and his way of weaving history, folklore, and mystery into every chapter. Also, I loved how each chapter was easy to follow and short enough to keep you hooked into starting the next one! Overall, the storyline was super interesting and the characters relatable.
