Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.

He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).

Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.

This book was a very edifying and impactful reminder of the importance and joy of prayer. It is in nature both devotional and enlightening.
Pros:
- Biblical
- Quite readable, yet contains beautiful prose
- Can't really think of any cons atm tbh!

Quotes:
page 23: But the truly consecrated soul is a soldier who carries only what he needs for warfare.
page 30-31: Often a Christian, when he comes to pray, does his utmost to cultivate a certain frame of mind which he thinks will please God. He misunderstands, or forgets, that does not consist of so many loose pieces, of which now the one, then the other, can be taken up.
page 40: Who can say what power a church could develop and exercise if it gave itself to the work of prayer, day and night, for the coming of the kingdom...?
page 74: The life in Him and in us is one and the same. His life in heaven is an ever-praying life. When it descends and takes possession of us, it does not lose its character; in us too it is the ever-praying life--a life that without ceasing asks and receives from God.

I am enriched when I discover Christian classic authors, and this was the first I've read by Murray. It was short but rewarding and rich in content. The chapter titles range from The Secret of Believing Prayer to The Holy Spirit and Prayer, the latter of which was so deep that I thought: I need to learn more about the role of the H.S. Each chapter ends with a beautiful prayer and I went back to re-read each one out loud.

I don't think I was in the right frame of mind when I read this, as I wasn't impressed at all, but maybe it was me and not the book. I really enjoyed Lord, Teach Us To Pray by this author, and was hoping for something similar with this short book. Yet this book just left me feeling like a failure. Hmm....

A short primer on prayer

This book covers some of the basic background for prayer...kind of laying a foundation for prayer. I got more out of the first half of the book..I found it helpful in increasing my appreciation for the depth of this subject.
