Back from vacation, Lance is ready to dive back into work—that is, until the morgue employees are taken hostage on his first day back. Held at gunpoint was not how he thought he'd spend his day. With their lives on the line, Lance and the others have no choice but to follow orders and perform the autopsy that's been demanded.
Angus never dreamed he'd be the one worrying about Lance being killed. He was the one with the dangerous job, not Lance. With the only information he can get coming from the ghosts, Angus and his mother try to sort through the evidence and do everything they can to keep Lance and the others alive.
As the case unfolds, Angus faces twists and turns he never saw coming, and as the truth is exposed, he prays the vacation he just enjoyed with Lance won't be the last one they ever share.

Girl, let me tell you. The gasp I gusped at one point in this book was loud as fuck. I was not expecting that at all.
This time in the Ghostly series, we follow Lance as he and his coworkers are held hostage at gunpoint and are forced to perform an autopsy on a small boy to prove that he was murdered. I was sat. Girl, I was sat for real.
It is not the most action-packed or suspense-driven book, but the entire situation and the mystery had me in my chair, fully ready, willing, and able to continue this journey with Lance.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see a point of view from a ghost, which we have not really had before. It was interesting, and honestly, I would not mind seeing that again later in the series.
This book takes place mostly over the course of about twenty four hours, and that tight timeline made the story more intense. It made me feel a lot of emotions toward the people holding the staff hostage. We also got to see Angus and his mother working together to try to help Lance. Watching Angus sit helpless in a parking lot, unable to save his man, and seeing how much he truly loves Lance was a strong emotional moment.
But let us be real. Lance does not need a big strong police officer to save him. He held his own just fine. That said, there is definitely some trauma here. Even if he tries to shove it down and act like he is fine, it is going to linger. I really hope we get more vulnerability from Lance soon. I want to see him open up to Angus. We are six books into the series, and we still have not had a truly deep emotional conversation between the two of them. That feels a little overdue.
If we can read about some pretty fucked up shit, in this so-called cozy mystery series, then we can handle some real emotional conversations too.
The Ghostly series by E. M. Leya, all six of them, right from Ghostly Awakening to Ghostly Hostage kept me completely entertained and wanting more after each book ended I jumped into the following series immediately thanks to Kindle Unlimited, and I am so very glad I came across this series by chance.
Angus and Lance kept a hold on my heart right from the first time they came on the pages. Angus the big macho motorcycle riding Detective, and Lance a medical examiner who could see and talk to the dead after a brain injury in a car accident developed the power of seeing and communicating with ghosts made an excellent couple and team in solving crimes with the help of the spirits who wanted answers and justice, became close family members for Lance. The ghosts helped Angus and Lance in solving cases which otherwise would have gone undetected. Brilliant concept.
Franks another police detective and partner to Angus lent a good support to the storyline, Lizzy and Betty made a wonderful team. Angus's mom, Lizzy could also see and communicate with ghosts and had a life long friend Betty, who helped her son with vital information when ever needed.
The romance that bloomed between Angus and Lance as the story progressed was sweet and romantic and ended on a wonderful note in Ghostly Hostage.
It was very interesting and entertaining concept in bringing out these series, each one better than the other. All the ghosts who joined in as the book progressed was a smart move, and each book had a different case to solve was also quite refreshing, and the introduction of Lance's dog Haunt, who could also see and play with the ghosts.
I loved the introduction of Ray and Bethany, Cel the famous chef who taught Lance to cook, Jeremy smart and intelligent who wanted to learn everything about being a medical examiner lent a great support, and all the ghosts who were victims, came and went into the light added comfort and zing.
My favorite of the six books were, Ghostly Awakening-Book 1, Ghostly Findings-Book 2, and Ghostly Hostage-Book 6. Though all the other books, Ghostly Envy, Ghostly Claus, Ghostly Target, were equally interesting. Though all the six books deserved a 5 star voting, I deducted one star from all except book one, because of mix of names, repetition in each book, which I understand was required as new ghost characters and side characters entered the story, and would have liked to have read a little more romantic action between Angus and Lance as the story progressed. I would have also liked to read a little more about their cruise holiday which was just brushed over.
Looking forward to reading more of author E. M Leya's work in future. Would love to read more ghostly stories with Franks as the main character with Angus and Lance support once again making a team to solve ghostly crimes, with new set of helpful ghosts. Any plans for audiobooks?
a fantastic mashup of police procedural and ghostly intervention plus romance, love it
Rating: 4.5🌈
Ghostly Hostage is an excellent example of a series can continue to grow and expand its universe and make narrative choices that are both exciting and challenging.
In Ghostly Hostage, our main couple has just finished their much needed vacation abroad a cruise. They’ve also decided to move into Lance’s house together. All big plans and steps forward in their relationship.
But immediately they and this story is plunged into a hostage situation.
Usually it’s Homicide Detective Angus whose life is placed in jeopardy. But here, instead, it’s the morgue with all its employees we’ve gotten to know and become fond of who are in eminent danger.
Laya makes the situation even more complicated by placing at its center a case and the people holding them at gunpoint, people we will understand and empathize with. It’s a horrible situation but at its heart is something far worse. A dead child who may have been murdered.
The author switches the perspective back and forth between the increasingly tense hostage situation and those outside the morgue hoping for answers, amplifying the suspense and the anxiety scene by scene. Even as the emotional component is realistically raised by those inside and out, with people crumbling under the stress, Laya remembers this is a police procedural that includes stalling by the hospital, warrants, and long hours of believable research. Even when there’s ghosts involved.
And there’s plenty of ghosts involved here. Including new ones. They flow seamlessly into the investigation in increasingly familiar but complex ways. And it adds to the paranormal aspect of this series by involving new characters in this world.
The crime, criminal, and ending was one I really appreciated. Although it’s a ghostly tale, the author treats it in a factual, grounded in reality manner that elevates the story.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I’m highly recommending this book and the entire series.
4 stars. Audiobook. Paranormal cozy mystery with a touch of romance, zero spice, contemporary setting, series of 9 books following the same couple. Police homicide detective and medical examiner that can see ghosts. I would not say this is a buying-level series, but if you can get it from the library or part of a subscription service, then go for it. Maybe a good pallet cleanser after something super emotional since there is very little drama, angst or action.
The stories were well written and I eventually warmed to the characters, but the series overall was somewhat bland. It was too light in too many areas and needed a bump-up somewhere. No spice, little to no romance and sweetness, lack luster bad-guys, average investigating, no extra quirky parents, no nosy but endearing neighbors, no sassy friends or snarky ghosts, no obnoxious but lovable siblings/boss, no crass BFF or fun-loving crazy aunt. We don’t even get any decent hurt/comfort. At book 5, the MCs are a couple but still going home alone and spending so much time separate, even when they are dealing with some sad stuff and only a short drive away. There was some cuddle scenes and sweetness, but it’s really far into the series and sparse. I feel a bit unfair in my assessment because these books are fine, I’ve just read so many that are similar but way more than fine.
I am loving this series. I only found out that the book had been released when it appeared on my Facebook feed. This one captured me from the start. The topic won't be the best for lots of readers and it was only the fact I couldn't sleep and started reading after midnight that I didn't finish in 1 sitting. I certainly didn't want to put the book down. Lance is on his first day back from his cruise when the morgue is taken hostage and forced to perform an autopsy to prove that the CoD wasn't the CoD. The ghosts played a big part in this story as they needed to keep Angus informed of what was going on in the autopsy room. arts of the book were quite shocking but an excellent read.
Holly S?!* Ball Battman, that’s one way to start a book. This was definitely my favorite book for a series that so far has been pretty “OK” for me. I’ve enjoyed Lance and Agnus’s story throughout the series, but this was the first book to really hook me. I am curious to see where this series will go from here.
it kind of took too long though. it became boring after a while but it was nice seeing everyone again.
i love jeremy. it was nice that the captain learned about lizzys gift and i can only hope that lance will trust his coworkers enough to reveal the truth to them as well soon.
hope we'll get a final 'epilogue' book, where we see everyone happy and jackson is back home!

I liked the different premise of this book. After Lance and Angus return from vacation, Lance gets taken hostage as the morgue is invaded by grieving parents who want on autopsy on their eight year old who they insist did not die from a heart attack as the hospital says. The first half of the book deals with the hostage situation and the second half deals with the search for a killer.
The ghosts are indispensable in this book and we meet a couple new ones. The ghosts are the only ones who can communicate what’s going on in the morgue during the crisis and they do some detective work around the hospital providing key information. I love the way they are so fully integrated into the story. Their presence becomes known to at least one more character as well. It’s a well crafted story arc.
It’s nice seeing Lance and Angus’ relationship progress to the moving in together phase. This is an “off page steam” book which makes a nice change of pace from the recent books I’ve read. Sometimes I want the diversity of an MM relationship but with all the focus on the characters and the story rather than sex scenes. There are so many of those in the MF book world but so few that I’ve found in the MM book world. Especially the case in crime/mystery/suspense books.
I’m new to EM Leya’s work and I’m looking forward to reading more. I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was another good addition to the Ghostly Series. Wow, this book was action packed. While I can empathise with Reggie’s parents trying to get some answers after his unexpected death but they went about it the completely wrong way by holding the morgue staff by gun point to get those answers.
In their grief they definitely weren’t thinking straight. All I can say is thank goodness that Lance can see & communicate with ghosts and that Jeremy is happily haunting the morgue, so he could warn Lizzy about what’s happening so she could then tell Angus. Lol Lizzy really doesn’t care if other people think she’s crazy, like telling Angus & Franks Captain about her abilities.
He surprised me in the end since his initial reaction was complete disbelief. Angus & Lance’s relationship strengthens each book and they have taken the plunge and moved into together. I really would’ve loved to get some answers about why the killer did what he did but oh well. I’m looking forward to reading Ghostly Death next, as well as more books by EM Leya in the future. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to others.
I'm really enjoying this series. This one is about Lance, he's taken hostage together with a couple of co-workers while they're working over at the morgue. Once again, Angus and the cast of ghosts save the day. The first part with the parents losing their child was sad. And the mystery wasn't quite resolved, I wasn't completely sure why the villain acted the way he did and why he committed the crimes, except maybe he was simply insane. And then the way it ends for the parents was so devastating and awful. I love Betty and Lizzy, and I love that Lizzy doesn't care what anyone thinks about her gifts and abilities with the ghosts, she's got a great personality and she's an amazing mom to Angus. And Angus finally moves in with Lance, I'm looking forward to the next book, I hope it's another murder case. I'm also hoping for more romance between Lance and Angus, hopefully they'll get married soon. Frank is also one of my favorites, I'm hoping he finds love sometime soon too. Even the dog Haunt is sassy and adorable.

It took a while but the I am liking this series better as it goes along. I am liking that the gift that Lance has is being shared with the living a bot more. While the first 70% of the book was fast paced, the latter parts were a little slow and a bit of a let down. But Lance's thoughts and actions post the events at the morgue was written well. My only gripe is that the romance for me is lacking. Just because you end a conversation with platitudes of love for each other, doesn't mean I feel that the leads are in love. They keep saying the other doesn't have to change for the other and how comfortable they are together. I would think that that is them not "in" love. Some passion in their relationship would be nice. This can be done even with the closed door policy this author has. Anyway I will still be reading the next few books as I am looking forward to more of the ghosts and their shenanigans as they seem to have more fun than the living.
Jako kryminał seria nawet dawała radę i tylko dlatego ją dokończyłam czytać. Romans leżał i kwiczał.
Coming home and starting up at work is hard enough but being held hostage was not in the plan. Poor Lance and his team suffer over grieving parents who died under sketchy circumstances. Wanting to prove he was murdered as any parent would but go about it badly. Angus is so upset when his mother calls him with the news that Lance is held hostage. Again all the ghosts come together to help him and Lance through this terrible ordeal. We find a new believer of the ghost after this and now have to go on the hunt for the killer.
Angus and Lance are one of my favorite couples. I love seeing how they work together to solve cases this time around they are separated by a situation and still have to find a way to solve the case. It was sad because of the situation, but the story was still enjoyable. I read this and then realized that i had missed reading the 5th book in the series. LOL. I don't feel like i really missed much but i will definitely go back and read it. Betty and Lizzy are in this one as well and I love them.
As soon as Lance and Angus return from their cruise the morgue is taken hostage. A couple is demanding an autopsy on a loved one they believe to have been murdered. If it wasn't for Jeremy the ghost who hangs out with Lance at the morgue, no one would know. Thankfully he rushes off to tell Lizzy, Angus' mom and are able to get the police there right away. With ghosts, detectives, and family they're gonna try to save everyone in the morgue, including Lance, Angus' love of his life, and solve the mystery.
I used to really enjoy this series but this book was about an armed hostage situation where you're supposed to feel sorry for the people shooting and blame the victims for not being good hostages. The misogyny was off the charts. And can we stop normalizing this notion that you can have a gun pointed at you for 24 hours and then go to work the next day because omg who will do all the work?
Also I really hate the trope that parents matter more than people without kids. And there were definite shades of that here.
This sixth book in the series carries on with the relationship of lance and Angus. Quite a touch and go situation at the morgue with hostages, and then trying to discover a murderer at the hospital. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, it was well written, and held my interest from start to finish. In fact, I read it in one night because I couldn’t put it down.
Highly recommend this and the previous books in the series. Can’t wait for the next one.
Lance and Angus have returned from a relaxing cruise together and Lance's first day back at work he and the other Morgue workers are taken hostage by a mourning Mum and Dad after the loss of their son. With the help of the Ghosts in Lance's life they manage to help the family. It is a sad story. I am really enjoying the Ghostly Series so much and I highly recommend this set of books but must be read in order to enjoy the whole experience.
If you like thrilling stories with lives on the line, this one has an agonizing hostage situation in the morgue and a possible killer in a hospital. Detective Angus has one advantage. His boyfriend M.E. Lance can see and talk to ghosts, including Jeremy who’s at the morgue and others at the hospital. Enjoy how Lance and Angus work together with ghosts, friends and family to keep people safe and to solve all the mysteries!!!
Each book gets better as the series goes on. Lance and Angus relationship development is moving faster in this book. We get more depth in their character development and see each case bring Lance and Angus closer. The case in the story was one of the better storylines in series. It hits more in the emotional level then the rest. I can’t wait to see where the author takes the rest of the series.
Long and slow. This has been my least favorite so far in the series. I thought a hostage situation would be more suspenseful. It seemed like half the book was spent with one character asking another if they were okay. How were they feeling? How were they doing? How were they handling the situation?
I still enjoyed spending time with Lance and Angus and the ever expanding family of ghosts. I just wish the book was significantly shorter.
I really wished I could give more stars. I like Angus and Lance. I love the ghosts and the story. But the writing - ugh! There is so much repeating going on, that if it got polished I’d bet the books would be half as long. I ended up skipping a few times because it was just the same and the same being said. Also a few times with errors that should have been picked up in editing.
This one started off so sad with the death of a child. The parents want answers and that puts the medical examiner team in danger. Looking for the killer, Angus and Franks are tired and frustrated. Lance and his team are nervous and trying to get back to normal after their ordeal. Happy to see them moving in together. Enjoyed this one.
I'd seen enough true-crime documentaries to predict where things were headed very early on. This took quite a different tone/direction to earlier books - the hunt for the perpetrator only started late in the plot with the hostage taking drama taking center stage for the most part; my preference is for the earlier books.
This is such an enjoyable series, every book brings a little something. Cannot believe bwr a six books in really love the characters and their interactions with one another. Highly recommended series.
Loved the books and as soon as one finished I started another. It was like watching a tv detective drama with a bit of the paranormal thrown in. It seemed even slightly plausible. Great read.
A very unique situation in a very unique location! What a great idea! Very interesting characters .. both living and deceased! A fun read! Don't miss it!
Loved it! Fab for an audience who love MM but are more plot focused than spice. I love spice in my romance normally but this series hooked me and I found the characters and the found family amazing! I've devoured the series In a matter of days!
I love this series, but this one was a little disappointing. The first half of the book was intense with the hostage takeover of the morgue. The last half was way too predictable. This won’t stop me from this series, for I love all the characters, from the living to all the ghostly ones.,
