For the Batman who has everything! Amidst their adventures as Superman and Wonder Woman, Clark and Diana take a thrilling journey into space to get a birthday gift for their dear friend Bruce.
WW and Superman go shopping for a present for Batman.
Tom King tries and drastically fails to be funny.
There are cringey jokes in abundance and WW and Supes get a mani-pedi and I am so fkn MAD at Tom King for shitting all over WW like this. Who the eff let this guy write comics.
This comic is not even worth wiping yourself with.
Filler content that bears no weight on the current arc and serves only as a way for King to try and stretch his comedic muscles. There are a few panels which are worth a laugh, but it also feels very try hard, breaking the flow for the sake of repetitious jokes. However, this still remains a highlight of the run so far, so if you're trying to stick with it, definitely give this a read.
Fun little filler issue of Wonder Woman and Superman exploring an intergalactic mall in order to find a birthday present for Batman, which is very reminiscent of the Alan Moore story "For the Man Who Has Everything." Despite this not being part of the main "Sovereign" storyline, I do appreciate that King took the time to establish why the Justice League or Superman doesn't help Diana clear the Amazon's name. Also a neat little moment from Batman at the end of the book.
I love a standalone issue that playfully displays the relationship between to superheroes, in this case Wonder Woman meets Superman at the biggest Shopping Mall across seven galaxies to try and find the perfect gift for Batman's birthday. If that doesn't hook you in what's the matter with you?
My copy is the lovely Sozomaika Women's History Month variant cover edition, which for me is the cherry on top of the cake.
This a comic book that I would probably try to pass onto non-comic reader friends as well. "Hey, there's this fun comic where...."
Excellent moments filled with Dinah being tender to Clark, and Clark being a true friend. I love this type of sappy shit, give me more. Also happy Bruce always gives me a smile.
two sunshiney besties buying birthday gift for their other grumpy bestie only to realize that their friendship is the best gift of them all? i know that's right. the big three, you will always be famous.
This was one of the worst issues of this current run of Wonder Woman. It was an interlude. Superman and Wonder Woman go to the mall. (In space.)
It's sort've a play on the classic story, "For the Man Who Has Everything," but nowhere near as good, and missing all the best parts. Where in the classic story, Wonder Woman and Batman are bringing gifts to Superman, here, Wonder Woman and Superman are looking for a gift for Batman. Whom is not in the story, really. And, where my favorite part of "For the Man Who Has Everything" is that Wonder Woman's job is fighting Mongul while Batman tries to figure out how to free Superman, here? There is precious little fighting.
The characters briefly acknowledge the idea that their time could be better spent than hanging out in the mall. This is true, but I ultimately can't fault them too much. Technically, it is within their power to spend every second of their lives trying to fight some sort of threat, on Earth or elsewhere in the universe. Superman could spend every second of every day trying to catch people falling from buildings, stopping car crashes, etc. But, it isn't fair to say that he doesn't deserve to have any sort of personal life. He deserves to spend time with his wife, kid, and yes, even just hanging out with friends. It's uncomfortable that it sounds like I'm saying that he should "let" someone's mom get into a fatal car crash. But, it isn't reasonable to put it on Superman that he has to be everywhere, all the time.
This issue was curiously outside of the ongoing storyline in Wonder Woman. Superman briefly addressed the idea of everyone being against Diana, but they didn't explore this problem in any detail.
I'm not sure that Tom King can get away with interludes like this. He is already facing a lot of criticism that in this current run of Wonder Woman, "nothing is happening." His story is too slow. We want concrete developments that we can see and talk about. We want answers about how the Hell "Trinity" came about. Sure, we all know that it was heavily implied that Trinity is the biological daughter of the tall Amazon woman who killed a bunch of men in a bar, at the start of Tom King's run. But we don't know that for sure. And we don't know who the biological father would be, and we don't know how/why Diana ended up raising this girl even if that Amazon is the biological mother. Fans want Tom King to move along and just answer those questions already.
I usually don't like fan service type stories that step aside from the main plot to explore a lighter more whimsical theme, but this issue delivers a lot of heart and comraderie that is enjoyable all the way. The world building of the setting is ludicrous and vast to an extreme level but it works in that it adds to the humor and absurdity of it all. It is also fun to see how these two can be super even in an extraordinary setting. Lots of fun and very satisfying.
It seems Tom King still had some space lore ideas he could not fit in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, so here we are with this interlude (30 pages, no backup story).
Loved the reference to the bad idea of gifting Bruce a time travel to see his parents, which is what Booster Gold gifted him for his wedding in Tom King's Batman run.
It was fun but the main issue is that in this kind of "slice of life" story, King's Wonder Woman sounds a lot like his Big Barda or his Alanna, another strong but cynical woman.
"Gifted", a story in the same spirit as King's "Superfriends" storyline from his Batman run. In that multipart story, Batman goes on separate date nights with the two other pillars of the Trinity.
It's a fun single-issue story where two super powerful beings go on a mundane gift buying trip, even if it's at the most complete shopping mall in the universe.
It's a fun story to read but Wonder Woman just can't stop needling Superman about dying to Doomsday and it gets old. She's lucky they are superfriends.
I was dreading this pause in the current story, but this is actually decent fun. Laughed at a few panels, skimmed over a few panels, and overall liked the easy read.
Could have left out the parking garage encounter. 🙄
Also appreciate that this quietly explains why Supes hasn't tried to intervene on her behalf given the magnitude of what she's facing.
This was a fun one off issue. Superman and Wonder Woman go to the universe’s equivalent of the Mall of America to find Batman a gift for his birthday.
It’s filler, but a nice break from the heavy plot stuff going on in the regular book. It’s super silly, so I get people bumping up against this random issue. But I had fun.
This was a rare miss for me in this series so far. I get the idea and find it charming, but the dialogue felt a little off and the issue in general didn't seem completely developed. It was a fun one-off, I look forward to what is coming up next!
I enjoyed this very lite and funny issue/story. I love the relationship between Clark and Diana. I miss the relationship they had when they were a couple. Nice break between the intense storyline that is going on in WW. I am really excited for the conclusion next issue.
A Cozy, wholesome issue. Despite all the turmoil going on Wonder Woman and Superman spend a day together as normal friends would (kinda), all the while trying to find a birthday present for Batman.
Like the Trinity short stories by King this was a nice change of pace given how serious and dense the main series is.
I don’t normally comment on individual comics, but this one was a big waste of time. Just a waste. Not a very good story. The cover is the only thing worth looking at.
Probably the absolute cutest book so far by Tom King on Wonder Woman. What a fantastic and quirky way to show the friendship and bond between WW, Superman, and Batman. Hilarious. And great stuff.
