An unlikely rookie superhero and a dog shifter beer enthusiast team up to stop a nefarious supernatural plot.
Food reviewer Scott Dixon didn’t just lose his job—he started getting premonitions linked to random tastes, a new ability he’s not sure how to manage. When an interview lands him a position using his visions to help people and stop criminals, Scott finds himself chasing bootleggers who create beverages specially formulated to control people with psychic abilities. The trail leads to upstate New York, where he meets a sexy craft brewer who takes his breath away, but might be more than he appears, testing Scott’s trust.
Craft brewer and Belgian Malinois shifter Gage Merrick never fit in with his law enforcement family. He loves beer and spent years developing brews designed to taste good to different types of shifters. When he meets Scott, sparks fly. But Gage’s passion for paranormally optimized beverages raises Scott’s suspicions, threatening their chance at happiness.
Will Gage be the love of Scott’s life, or will their affair leave a bitter aftertaste?
A Taste for Danger is a feel-good paranormal super-powered hero MM romance romp filled with secret agents, found family, good beer, quirky humor, sexy shifters, soulful psychics, and supernatural skullduggery!
This book is part of the multi-author MM Romance SubPar Heroes series and is also linked to the Fox Hollow series.
I don't think this book knows what genre it wants to be. Everything from the series name and prompts, cover, and a bit the blurb, promise a superhero story. However, the chosen setting is as part of the paranormal town of Fox hollow. And in order to fit SPAM in somehow, it was transformed to a low-budget paranormal spy agency. So the book is trying to somehow be a superhero, cozy spy thriller and paranormal fated mates novel all at the same time, which is confusing. Especially because depending on the point of view, so changes the perceived genre. Scott is (badly) attempting to live his unwilling spy moment and discovery of the paranormal, but when switching to Gage it's a fully paranormal book. One chapter is Scott trying to catch the bad guys and the next Gage is talking to his inner dog. And in between the cracks of those it seems like Morgan is trying to shove in SPAM (which is kind of redundant as there was already the FBSI in the universe) and the superhero idea. So while you're reading and trying to figure out wether its paranormal or cozy spy, a little voice wonders "wasn't it supposed to be superheroes?", which draws away from the main story and romance. Plus, it is set after all the fox hollow books in the same town with many important overlapping characters, which means prior reading is 100% required, not just suggested. I think the only way to make it work would be to either take the story from subpar heroes and make it fully paranormal fated mates, or take it out of fox hollow and make it superhero. But the way it is, it's trying to do too much and thus not actually managing to do much at all.
As part of the subpar superheroes multi-author series where pretty mundane humans end up working for SPAM. I highly appreciate the continuity the authors have shown throughout with the feel of the agency with looks and personality.
This time, we have Scott, who ends up tasting when people or events have bad intentions or something bad is coming (new to me, superpower). When he accidentally applies to work for SPAM, he is sent undercover to Fox Hollow, where he meets Gage and his bad of unique friends. With a unique take on shifter series, I haven't seen as much where the shifter and his human counterpart speak often and actually feel to have similar yet somewhat different personalities. Yes, they do have a spat, but they do take the time to discuss their issues once cooled down.
The overall story has an engaging plot that keeps you wanting for more. As with other Morgan Brice, books appreciate how they tie all loose ends up by the thrilling end of the story.
Woohoo, this is set in Fox Hollow! I know it's a new series, but when I saw it was set in my favorite town with me favorite people, I fell in love before I read it, lol. It was a good story and the mystery was well written. But, I kinda wish the clairgustance played a bigger part of the story. This read as a Fox Hollow novel not a new super hero novel. Though I love the idea of SPAM and can't wait to see what else Morgan Brice comes up with! This is a good first story in a newish setting (since all her series are in the same world). I highly recommend this story.
A Taste of Danger by Morgan Brice is part of the Subparheroes by various authors. I have enjoyed the books in this series as they feature humans with some type of small unusual paranormal ability that they use to fight bad guys. In this story we meet Scott Dixon, a food reviewer for a magazine that has just lost his job and he only has 2 weeks left until he will be broke. He has applied for many other jobs but the only one that responded was from SPAM. He thinks this is for the meat Spam and that he might work in a test kitchen so he goes for it, even though he has to move to Albany. He has gone to culinary school so he believes this might work out, especially since his special ability is that he gets strange tastes in his mouth before something happens and judging by the taste if it is going to be good or bad. This is called clairgustance, which is something I didn’t know! When he gets to SPAM he discovers that it really is a secret agency – Special Processing and Management with intelligence operations that involve supernatural and paranormal abilities – and they want him to become a secret agent to find some coyotes and whoever is the head of them that are making dangerous recreational drugs and distilled spirits that affect supernatural metabolisms that have even killed a few of them and are coming from Canada. Scott agrees to take the job but only gets two weeks of training before he heads to Fox Hollow which is between Lake Placid and Lake George and is shifter friendly and has an institute for psychics. It’s there that he meets Gage Merrick, a Belgian Malinois, who owns Merrick’s Craft Brewing and makes small batch craft beers. His entire family was in the military or police due to the kind of shifters they are but Gage couldn’t see himself doing that so he left and decided to follow his passion of crafting beer. He is trying to find some natural ingredients that will give paranormals a buzz so this is why Scott goes there first. Both men have been hoping to find their forever mate and when they meet there is an instant attraction and a zing when they touch. Not only that but Scott gets the taste of chocolate and strawberries in his mouth when he is around him. Gage has lots of shifter friends including a fox, wolves, a lynx, a moose, and even squirrels and the sheriff is a bear. Because of them he has some fun nights that interest them and draw people into his into his brewery. When Scott comes in Gage has him try some of his special brews with very interesting names that allude to who they were made for. Then they go out to dinner and learn more about each other and the more they find out the more they like and this leads to some very hot love scenes. Then Scott goes to the Fox Institute to talk to Dr. Jeffries, a psychic, the sheriff, and Gage’s friend, Liam, who runs the library to try to find information about the smugglers and where they might be. He still hasn’t told Gage that he works for SPAM but knows that he has to if they want their relationship to grow. But Gage finds out first and he is hurt that Scott didn’t say anything and asks for some time alone. Word of his questioning about the smugglers gets out and he gets kidnapped before he can speak to Gage so that keeps going through his mind and when Gage can’t find him to apologize he seeks help from his friends who are able to track Scott to where the bad guys are holding him and there is an epic scene where he is rescued, they go back to town, and declare their love for each other. I really enjoyed this book as I have the others in the series. I often found myself laughing out loud at what has happened. A few of these are whenever SPAM is mentioned everyone thinks it’s the meat, the different tastes Scott gets in his mouth, Madden and his squirrel buddies and how they help to save the day, and the way Gage and his shifter side Mal always talk to each other. Scott is a great guy and even without much training is able to save himself and get the smugglers. Gage is so protective and knows deep in his heart that Scott is the one for him. Their friends are funny and ferocious in helping them when they need it most. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are looking for a different kind of paranormal series that has a mystery with bad guys to be solved, some suspense, a town full of supernaturals, and a lot of love between two men who are looking for their forever person.
I have to say that I have really enjoyed the concept of the Subparheroes universe. While superheroes have been in our culture for almost a century, almost no one has considered that there must be people in that universe who have less ostentatious powers, let alone how those people might use those unusual, less-vaunted powers to save the day.
Scott is one of those people. He has the ability to "taste" something that can predict what the future may hold--meeting his soulmate (chocolate and strawberries), encountering someone who is committing financial crimes (pennies), etc. When he loses his job, he is recruited by SPAM, the mysterious agency that takes in people with minor powers and utilizes their abilities to help thwart evildoers. He's sent to the Adirondacks to investigate drug smuggling--only instead of normal drugs, these drugs are intended to work on paranormal people (like shifters), and have resulted in some deaths.
Gage, a Malinois shifter, runs a brewery where he works on making beers that will give paranormal people a buzz, since they tend to metabolize alcohol too quickly to enjoy an after-work beverage. When Scott and Gage meet, they both recognize a special connection.
This is an interesting mystery, and I am definitely intrigued by the wider Fox Hollow world this book exists in. All of the characters were people I wanted to get to know better, though the sheer number of side characters did make things a little confusing at times since I hadn't read the other books and didn't know who they were.
However, entirely too much of the book is done in internal thoughts--for Gage, this is him having internal discussions with his Malinois--which gets a little tedious after awhile. Inner monologuing can help with knowing how the character feels, but it was used too much here and dipped into "tell not show" territory.
I did have an advanced copy, so it's possible this was fixed before publishing, but there were also several instances where the wrong character's name was used--for example, we'd be in Gage's point of view but the sentence would say that he grabbed Gage's hand.
This book was enjoyable to read, but had a few quirks that just didn't work for me. I'm sad this series is coming to a close, but am excited to dive into some new (to me) writers' backlists!
3.25/5 I had a bit of trouble completely suspending my disbelief for this one. Shifters and superpowers? No problem. Witches and magic drug runners? Sure. A secret organisation that hires a food blogger to be a secret agent with two weeks of mostly PowerPoint presentation training? Really? So I was annoyed by that set up and then also annoyed by Scott’s utter incompetence. (Hardly surprising, given his lack of training, but frustrating nonetheless.)
The big point of contention between Scott and Gage is Gage not knowing the truth about Scott. Given that Gage is a suspect and they’ve known one another for two seconds, I’m astonished he would imagine for a moment that Scott would have instantly confessed—except that *Scott* does tell several other people in that short span of time (including an incredibly incompetent accidental reveal), so then I sort of wound up back on Gage’s side.
I thought the two of them were cute together in the moments they did have, and I was entertained by Gage’s Mal. Scott’s power is intriguing (but truly, not super useful, lol.) It was very insta-love, but I do give more leeway in a fated mate paranormal story than I do in a contemporary. I think the tone of the book didn’t quite hit comic enough for the absurd things to seem totally plausible to me. (That being said, “surveillance squirrels” were hilarious and awesome!)
There were a few parts that seemed repetitive (where yet another person was being told the same info we already knew, etc.), but that didn’t happen too often. I liked that Scott and Gage had intimate moments that weren’t just spicy, and I appreciated that the aftermath of the adventure involved doctors, wound care, and actual mental and physical recovery. I liked the way Scott felt that he fit into Fox Hollow, and I enjoyed how Gage’s friends rallied around him. I can definitely imagine these two being happy here.
I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.
Part of a multi-author series about subpar heroes and villains mixed with romance, this entry by Brice features food reviewer Scott who loses his job, applies to over a hundred and suddenly receives a 'SPAM' call resulting in a perfect job offer.
He's always had the right taste to identify good food, but recently, strange food tastes in his mouth seems to foretell even stranger occurrences.
Clairgustance, the ability to taste something that wasn’t present ... Aka physic impressions via tasting.
He's delighted that he's been hired by a test kitchen for canned ham, packing up his belongings and moving to Albany sharpish, even if the medical paperwork has strange questions and he finds himself being fitted for a tactical vest...
I mean yes, it takes him that long to figure out he's not going to be working 'with' food, insomuch as working out the future with his tastebuds.
His first assignment as an intelligent asset is undercover as a food critic in ... Fox Hollow. Fans of Brice will recognise the name.
He's been sent to find out who's behind ingredients of dubious quality being smuggled in from Canada.
Gage is a Belgian Malinois shifter, whose hobby, now main job, is making shifter friendly beers to help them get tipsy. He hangs and runs with Russ and Liam plus Drew and Noah; again, regulars of the Fox Hollow books will know these characters but it isn't difficult to get a feel for them anyway.
There's some great, humorous scenes in there, particularly the 'answerphone' options and system for SPAM and the cure doggyness of Gabe helping a friend with his planting.
We also have Easter eggs for other Brice books such as references to FBSI and se well known characters and cases.
Never fear though, despite peril, dastardly villains and fights, we get our HEA.
This book is part of the multi-author Subparhereos series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone. This is the story of Scott Dixon and Gage Merrick. Gage is a Malinois shifter and brew master. He owns the local brewery and is trying to craft beers that shifters can enjoy as their tolerance for alcohol is higher than humans. Scott is a recently laid off food critic. He has been desperately trying to find a new job so that rent and food are still an option for him. When he gets a job with SPAM that has very good salary and benefits, he willingly moved to Albany. The humour that is throughout this book starts immediately when Scott is filing out the required paperwork for his new job. Scott's one unusual ability is getting premonitions linked to random tastes. The first day of Scott's training is hilarious. Scott believes that he is going to work in a test kitchen for SPAM the luncheon meat. In reality, he is training for Special Processing and Management Division SPAM. They are a covert intelligence operations that involve the supernatural and paranormal abilities. Deciding that a job is a job, Scott decides to continue the training. On a day off from his undercover work, Scott visits Fox Hollow to see an old friend of his. It is there that he meets Gage. Sparks fly between the two of them. It is just too bad that Gage is on his list of suspects to investigate. This is their story. This is a very fun read. I was really happy to be back at Fox Hollow. Though the squirrels very nearly stole the show with their "internut" and "Squirrels just want to have fun". This book is a romance with kidnapping, explosions and death. But it is done in a fun and uplifting way! I loved this book! It is a great read!
I received a complementary advanced review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Morgan Brice and A Taste of Danger is no exception. This story is filled with witty and funny bits as well as a nice amount of romance, danger and suspense. It’s part of the Subparheroes multi-author series and it’s also set in her Fox Hollow Zodiac world. You don’t need to have read any other books in either of these series to enjoy this story.
Scott gets a new job working for SPAM (Special Processing And Management). The acronym allows for a lot of witty and funny passages in the story; one of the first ones had me LOLing. When Scott gets the call from SPAM, that they want to hire him, he tries to remember if he sent a resume to Hormel. It’s much funnier when read in context. 😊
The blurb does a very good job of setting up the story but it can’t convey how humorous, yet still serious, the book is. The story is filled with all kinds of shifters who help out when needed. There’s a moose, a bear, a fox, a Malinois, wolves and a bunch of squirrels. Many of these secondary characters have featured in their own Fox Hollow books but like I said, A Taste of Danger really does standalone. Morgan Brice always does a great job of giving you any information you need from previous books without having the information feel redundant to people who have already read the other books. It’s one of the things that I like best about her books, after the excellent writing. 😊
If you’re looking for a story that’s easy to read, adventurous and witty with a nice romance, you might want to give this book a try.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
The characters, setting, and story was interesting.
Scott has an interesting power I've never heard of before and that was new. Gage is a shifter, but it's been some time since I've read about shifters talking to their animal counterpart as a different entity in their minds. And Mal was really blunt but cute.
I liked the town with their mix of magical beings, and how close they all were. The author seems to connect many storylines, but this book can be read as a standalone perfectly fine, I haven't read other books by this author and I never got lost, of course I think it would probably add more excitement if I knew the other characters and their situations but it wasn't a necessity.
The book was quiet well written and there were really few mistakes. If I have to say something against and why the lower rating it's because the pace of the story wasn't for me... I had some trouble keeping up, sometimes it was slower other times it went faster, but that's totally personal and I think many other will find the pacing perfect for them.
The love story was really sweet and thankfully the one problem they do have, which I think it was blown a bit out of proportion, didn't last long and both main leads actually took the time to talk things through and that's always refreshing to read about.
POV: dual (both MCs) Spice: low (there's adult language and explicit scenes but not overly detailed and they are short... Only one full scene at the end) Tropes: secret agent, close-knit magical town, fated mates. CW: kidnapping.
Scott loves everything to do with food. He does have an odd development that allows him to taste when something is going to happen, good and bad, but he can deal . He gets a new job working for Spam. He likes Spam. SPAM however is Special Processing And Management, “they handle unique covert intelligence operations that involve the supernatural and paranormal abilities.” not food. Whatever. He can deal with the deep end of the pool. Maybe? His first assignment sends him to Fox Hollow.
Gage is a Malinois shifter. He came to Fox Hollow because it was shifter friendly. His dream of crafting beers was finally a reality. Now if he could just find a mate his life would be perfect. After meeting Scott his Malinois insists Scott is the ONE. Now he just needs to work past the fact that Scott has left out crucial information about himself (this is the drama in the book).
I liked Scott’s approach to his new job, which is to say running in blindly. His (almost) ineptitude really seemed to work in his favor.
Gage’s dialogue with his inner beast was funny and sweet. The Malinois was very opinionated and to the point. Actually both Gage and Scott’s introspections kept the story moving forward.
I like the series. Great sense of family. I also like the continuity of the Fox Hollow books. I don’t believe the reader needs the other books to understand this story. However the stories are entertaining.
Last word…the squirrels are nuts and surprisingly vital to the story.

While this book is part of the Subparheroes series, it's a standalone and fits in the author's Fox Hollow universe.
It is a great addtion to Fox Hollow and I love to see so many of previous characters again.
Scott is the most unusual spy ever. He ends up at SPAM accidential, thinking it's a new job which fits in his foody background. His first job brings him to Fox Hollow and mayhem occurs. I love how he tries to solve the crime of a gang mixing up drugs and alcohol which is causing shifters and other supernatural dangerously illnesses and death. His ways are a bit naive but on the other hand he definitley has a new way to look at things.
His low level ability is not something I have come across before but that and Scott's not-so-typical Spy-ness add interest to the story which could have easily been otherwise your run-of-the mill romance. The author is good in creating new ways to keep a story interesting.
Gage is a Malinois shifter who doesn't fit well in his law enforement family and found a new home in Fox Hollow. His internal discussions with his beast are hilarious, Mal is very set in what he wants - Scott as their mate.
While there is the "fated mate" logic, I love how these two take a bit of time dating and even when Scott's case is causing a bit of miscommunication, they are on the right path and actually a couple who talks things out.
Scott Dixon enjoyed his life as a food blogger until he lost his job. He started getting weird tastes that led to premonitions. He finally finds a new job but it is not a food one but rather using his weird tastes to capture criminals and help people. His first assignment involves tracking bootleggers using special drink formulas to control and/or hurt those with psychic abilities. The trail leads to Fox Hollow and a very sexy brewer, Gage Merrick. Gage loves brewing craft beers and has been experimenting with ways to help shifters enjoy their brews more. He and his Belgium Malinois know Scott is theirs but trust becomes an issue until danger comes calling.
There is always something special about Morgan Brice’s stories. Reading them is like drinking an excellent bottle of wine. And like that wine, the story just flows so smoothly and keeps you glued to the pages. Scott was intriguing as he tried so hard to do this new job. Gage loves his life but is missing that certain someone. Together, they are unstoppable. But first, Fox Hollow and the residents certainly show how to come together for one of their own. Want to know what that means? Pick up A taste of Danger and find out for yourself. You will be glad you did. I received an ARC of this book and this is my personal opinion.
Scott Dixon is a trained chef who becomes a food reviewer. He's also part of the paranormal community with an unusual talent, he gets premonitions which, literally leave a bad taste in his mouth. After being fired he's hired as an investigator for a secret organization looking into the illegal smuggling of drugs formulated to affect paranormals. Gage Merrick is a craft beer brewer, and Belgian Melinois shifter who is located in the small town of Fox Hollow in Upper New York state. His goal is to create beers that are tasty to shifters and safe for human consumption, he is also on the list of persons being investigated by Scott. Gage quickly realizes that Scott is his true mate, so when Scott is kidnapped by the smugglers, he will rally the town's shifters to mount a rescue even though he is pretty sure he is on the list of suspects. This is a wonderful MM romantic comedy that kept me is stitches throughout the book. Magic, shifters, romance, and surprising twists made it hard to put this book down. Fantastic characters with some very interesting paranormal abilities make this a must-read book that I gladly recommend to others.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This entry in the multi author Subparheroes world (where characters with unusual abilities find their happy ever after in the most unusual of circumstances) takes place in the author's Fox Hollow setting. This makes me very happy as I'm a fan of that funny little shifter town in the Adirondacks. Scott, our MC with the mild but curious psychic power that manifests through taste, finds himself accidentally recruited by SPAM and sent to Fox Hollow for his first investigation. Not only does he find himself up against a ruthless gang of criminals, he finds his forever guy in Gage, the local brewery owner and a Malinois shifter.
I love the world building because the author has managed to get the balance just right for me so the story feels equally SPAM and Fox Hollow. It's a decent plot which serves a the vehicle for Scott being in town, too. Then there's the imagination of bringing Gage to life on the page - his inner conversations with his Malinois other half bring much of the humour in the book. It's a very entertaining read, and yes pretty insta but they are fated mates after all, and overall it's a great addition to the series. 4*
An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.
In this highly entertaining read, Scott possesses an unusual power that lets him taste when something good or bad is about to happen. His life takes a wild turn when he accidentally applies for a job at SPAM, leading him to Fox Hollow, a supernatural-friendly town. There, he meets Gage, a Malinois shifter who runs a brewery, along with Gage's group of unique shifter friends. Scott’s tendency to dive headfirst into his new job—despite his near-ineptitude—strangely works in his favor, making for a humorous and action-packed adventure. As Scott’s budding relationship with Gage grows, Scott continues to investigate suspicious happenings in the town and faces challenges from a dangerous criminal gang. The blend of mystery, humor, and supernatural elements—complete with a quirky band of shifters and furry companions—makes this a thoroughly enjoyable book. As a fan of Morgan Brice’s many series, it was impressive the way she seamlessly intertwined the Subparheroes and Fox Hollow series together.
This is a part of the Subparhereos and Fox Hollow series. Scott is an ordinary human who can taste people's intentions. After he applies to SPAM he is sent to Fox Hollow where he meets Gage, a Malinois shifter. Gage has come to Fox Hollow to start his business. Looking for a mate as well, he's happy to come across Scott. He's not so happy to learn that Scott hasn't told him the full truth about himself. This leads to some drama. I really liked that Gage interacted with his shifter counterpart. It lead to some interesting and funny parts of the story. I really liked seeing some of the characters from previous Fox Hollow books. This is a really good fantasy/paranormal/romance with some low drama. The world and character building are good. The chemistry between Scott and Gage is good. I liked the story and how the author intertwined the Subparheroes and Fox Hollow series together. I highly recommend this book.
A Taste of Danger is part of the multi-author Subpar Heroes series. It’s set in contemporary New York where paranormal beings are an open secret in places like Fox Hollow and there are parallel government agencies that police and serve those populations. There are also a wide variety of shifters and other paranormal beings, though humans generally are not aware of them; in point of fact, Scott himself has clairgustance, but didn’t know shifters and whatnot were real until SPAM hired him. The narration is split between Scott and Gage, but not every chapter necessarily switches perspective.
This was a cute, rompy get-together that paired a loner like Scott with a social butterfly like Gage.
"A Taste of Danger" is a fun and cute book. I love the concept of a food critic having clairgustance (a psychic talent involving taste,) and then using that talent and his history as a spy. The romance in this was adorable. Scott and Gage are fun, and having this book set in the authors Fox Hollow world was a treat.
I love the concept with this series and the "Subpar" part of being a hero. Each has showcased the main agency "SPAM" in thier own ways and sometime the agency is competent and sometimes it is not. Both ways have added to the book but my favorite are the books where the agency seems a bit lacking. It comes off and serious, but adds to the subpar part of everything simply by their hiring practices, orientations and preparedness of their agents. It adds a fun extra to the paranormal world created with psychic abilities, shifters, creatures, and magic.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this addition to the multi author series Subparheroes, I’ve read a few of this authors books before and enjoyed them this can be read as a standalone but it was set in the author’s Fox Hollow universe and I really liked some of the characters from it so I’m going to go and read some more from it. But for this one we have Scott a very new SPAM agent basically two weeks training and then out on his first solo mission and Gage a shifter who preferred making craft beer than following in his family’s footsteps in law enforcement as soon as they meet they connect and think that they are mates but a lack of communication causes a rift between them and that’s when Scott’s investigation really heats up but in the end Gage and his friends come to his rescue and they solve the case and decide they want a life together because their mate bond and feelings for each other had become a lot stronger. Great read with great characters and side characters.
3.5 stars. I enjoyed the action, humour, romance and steam in this book. I found the writing a little simplistic, which brought down my rating, but the plot and the characters made up for it. Gage is the Fox Hollow bar owner and beer brewer. I would love to try all those flavours of beer that he concocts! He is a shifter, and his inner conversations with his dog side are funny, though sometimes a little too long. Scott has a cool minor psychic ability that causes him to be hired as a spy by SPAM, a secret agency. Quite frankly, I can't see why they would send such a new and untrained agent into a potentially dangerous situation without a partner. Be that as it may, it gives Scott the chance to recognize Gage as his mate when the two of them instantly fall for each other. I also enjoyed the side characters and the shifter lore. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Gage Merrick is a craft brewer and a Malinois shifter, and Scott Dixon is the spy with a sense of taste that gives him leads on people and situations before they happen. Between them, they manage to bring down a drug smuggling operation in the area of Fox Hollow, a town where supernatural reside. I wanted so badly to love this story, but it was just a like for me. I usually enjoy Morgan Brice's stories but this one just felt like a misfit. Yes, I know it's a novella, and between that and the fated mates trope, Scott and Gage were destined to fall in love. Frankly, though, I just didn't get enough of that vibe. They were too tentative, each for his own valid reason, and the intrusion of the suspense related to Scott's job took away even further from the "romance" between them. I hate giving this low a star rating, but I honestly don't feel this one at all. It was just too predictable and too rushed
This was an awesome book!! I swear, it was Men In Black meets James Bond meets I-don’t-know-what; the Coen Brothers, maybe?
I mean, we’ve got the SPAM organization (that’s Special Processing And Management, not the canned meat); a superhero whose superpower is the ability to taste something that isn’t there…kind of like a forewarning or something? His beer brewing mate whose life’s work is to make the perfect beer to give shifters a buzz; drug running coyotes, NOT the nickname coined by law enforcement referring to humans who smuggle drugs—I’m talking about real coyote shifters! And then the most AMAZING Disney rescue ever!!! There was so much more in between, you just would not believe, but the fun is in the reading and you. Have. GOT. To read this book!!
I received a copy of this book for free but am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another subpar superhero, another apparently useless super power. Scott Dixon, unemployed food critic and wanna be food truck owner, gets a job he didn't apply for with SPAM. The Glock and getting measured for a bullet proof vest kind of gives him the idea that he's not getting a job in a test food kitchen. With his clairgustance super power, he's sent to Fox Hollow for his first assignment. Gage Merrick is Belgian Malinois shifter who owns a craft bar in the Hollow, trying to create the perfect beer buzz for his friends. They meet, they're mates., Scott is a horrible 'intelligence asset'. But he and Gage are terrific together and hilarious. Very supportive secondaries from other Fox Hollow books. Best use of Squirrel spies. A quick, very fun read. Nice to visit the Fohx Hollow universe again. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my review.
I love Morgan Brice stories so I downloaded this without realizing it was set in Fox Hollow and I wish I had read it earlier. I love this place and I really liked Scott even though he was so naive when recruited by SPAM. It sounded so hinky and he was so unprepared when he did go to Fox Hollow to look for the coyote shifters. I loved Gage(and his shifter Mal with his snarky comments)and the other members of the town and how they rallied when Scott was kidnapped by the coyotes when he was hunting for them at the abandoned FrontierWorld park. That was so exciting and Scott was so resourceful when he got loose. The explosion he caused that brought the roof down and destroyed the drugs was amazing and I was relieved when Gage and the others showed up to save him. I loved the tributes to the first responders and the squirrels and that Scott was able to move to Fox Hollow.
This series has worked surprisingly well in being adaptable enough to encompass several different authors' worlds. In this case, Morgan Brice's Fox Hollow makes an appearance as Scott, whose questionable superpower is premonitions linked to the sense of taste, meets Gage, a Belgian Malinois shifter, while he investigates a black market ring near the Canadian border.
There's a nice balance of humor and suspense in the book, as Scott debates telling Gage his secret identity before running afoul of literal coyote smugglers. Brice's mashup of the Subparheroes and Fox Hollow universes is clever, with some fun cameo appearances from previous Fox Hollow characters. I particularly enjoyed the squirrel shifters, with Scott's ironic take on his Disney inspired rescue. There were also some intriguing ties to Brice's other series, including the Witchbane series in particular.
It's definitely an enjoyable, quick read, even if it falls back on a pattern used before in previous books, where one of the characters gets kidnapped and the town members band together to save the day. I keep thinking I'm going to get tired of the plot device but at least in this instance it worked, even if Brice might be working this well a bit more than I'd like. And hopefully, we'll see more of Scott and Gage in the future.
This was a cute Subparheroes book, all of which can be read as standalones. Scott was like the worst secret agent in the history of ever lol! Both men were a good fit, although they were each separately thinking about Scott moving to Fox Hollow before they even went on their first date. The book could have benefited from a good proofreading as there were a number of editing errors, and both characters seemed to be caught in their own heads a bit much. Still, this was an entertaining read. I would love to read a novella or short story about the squirrel spies. They were hilarious! The following was my favorite quote from the book:
This might be the strangest rescue in the world, but I think I might be okay after all.
From food blogger to secret agent, with a craft-beer brewing shifter and a helping of security squirrels!
This was my first foray into the world of the Subpar Heroes and SPAM, but not into the Worlds of Moran Brice and Fox Hollow, as I love her writing and the great little shifter sanctuary set in the Adirondacks.
It was a nice change to discover a different government organisation and enjoyed it’s inclusion into Fox Hollow. The two MCs, Scott and Gage, are just the sort of characters Morgan Brice brings to life in her works. Gage’s shifter side - a Belgian Malinois called Mal - is absolutely delightful, and the author has melded this fiercely loyal hole-digging protector with Gage’s sensitive brewer perfectly into a great character I’d like to read more of.
As I haven’t read anything else from the Subpar Heroes stories I’m not sure how much their presence features in other books. In this novella it felt like it was quite a light touch, with more focus on the main characters and their interactions with each other and the side characters in the story.
While I enjoyed the book I was frustrated with how bad a secret agent Scott was portrayed. He definitely wouldn’t have been let out in the field on his own on his first case, never mind the ‘powerpoint-presentation’ training! It does make me wonder if this it’s the same approach in the other subpar heroes books - are SPAM deliberately implausible, or did it just fit the plot for this particular story? While I’m not looking for an in depth true-to-life gritty spy novel, I prefer a more realistic plot line to give a better balance to the characters and the story’s world-building, which with Morgan Brice is first rate.
There’s definitely some spice, but also some endearingly intimate non-spicy moments that give the MCs depth and definition that fits with the narrative.
I loved how Gage’s friends stepped up when everyone realised there was trouble a-foot (I can’t say anything else without giving spoilers!), which is true to the other Fox Hollow books I’ve read. It’s the perfect place for Scott to settle down and make a life with Gage, especially as Fox Hollow can now boast of having its own ‘security squirrels’!
I recommend this to urban fantasy lovers as well as paranormal MM romance fans. It’s a story with all the feels and as it links to both Morgan Brice’s Fox Hollow series and the Sub-par Heroes set of stand-alone novellas it’s opening up whole new worlds to dive into.
Enjoyed another trip back to Fox Hollow. Scott accidentally applies to SPAM and is hired. His ability is unusual, he can taste the bad intentions of people. After a short training time he is sent to Fox Hollow uncover to investigate those purported to have created a drink that controls those with psychic abilities.
Gage is a Belgian Malinois shifter. Also a craft brewer who moved to Fox Hollow because the time welcomes shifters. Gage also wants to create a brew that is safe for shifters and humans can enjoy. He’s anxious to find his mate and his shifter half believes they have after meeting Scott.
There is drama when the pair meet and Scott doesn’t confess what he does. It was nice to revisit the residents we read about in the past. Each playing a role here. An enjoyable read.
Hilarious, adventurous and fun! Gage, dog shifter, is a bit of an outsider within his family. He designs and creates beer catered to shifter species' tastes. Scott, gets a job that caters to his new skills. His introduction to his new life is hilarious and sets the tone for the story. He is on the trail of bootleggers who create beverages to control minds of shifters. When he meets Gage, he is automatically suspicious beause of Gage's passion. Good story, Gage and Scott accidentally provide a lot of humor in serious situations. Interesting mystery, good adventure, intriguing complexities. Gage and Scott are likeable with fun supporting characters. Excellent cover art. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
