Garrison doesn't know it yet, but a battle rages in the shadows of ordinary life.

Left at his estranged grandmother's hobby farm for the summer, Garrison plans to numb his feelings of abandonment with video games. But little by little, odd and eerie occurrences reveal that this farm is not what it seems. In fact, there's something otherworldly going on, and a sinister presence lurks in the shadows, plotting not just against Garrison, but all of humanity.

Carly arrives at the farm injured, with no memory of how she got that way. It all starts to come back in bits and an ominous man, a spy sent to find a powerful artifact, and a personal secret she'll go to great lengths to keep. Is she brave enough to face the truth of her past and, with Garrison, change the course of the future?

Come along on this fantastical tale of mystery, budding romance, and the amazing power that can come from the bonds of friends and family.

After 17 years of writing for trade magazines, Emily Refermat decided to jump full-time into capturing the stories that play in her head. That way others could get to know and love the characters as much as she does. She pens young adult fiction/fantasy, such as her debut magical realism novel The Invisible War. When she isn’t writing, she’s spending quality time with her husband, her three children, and their loveable, if hairy, golden retriever in Southeast Wisconsin.

Left to his own devices on his grandmother’s remote hobby farm, Garrison expects a dull summer. But his gaming and solitude are upended when strange occurrences begin to unravel. The arrival of Carly, a mysterious amnesiac, adds a layer of intrigue and danger to the story. With a shadowy presence lurking and strange forces at play, the farm is revealed as far more than it seems.

The author seamlessly blends elements of fantasy, mystery, suspense, and romance in this young adult novel. The budding relationship between Garrison and Carly adds a heartwarming dimension to the story, while the supernatural adventure elements keep the plot moving at a fast pace. The author’s vivid descriptions of the settings and characters create a sense of mystery that engages and entertains the reader. Her use of foreshadowing is excellent, revealing just enough to create that I-didn’t-see-that-coming moment. With its rich setting, compelling characters, and plenty of plot twists, this novel is a must-read for fans of coming-of-age stories woven with fantasy and suspense. The message about the power of friendship, family, and courage will resonate with both young and old.

Sublime Line: “A thrilling adventure that takes readers on an exciting ride where the ordinary collides with the extraordinary.”

I was fortunate to read the ARC for a brand new young adult fantasy book named The Invisible War by my friend and former co-worker, Emily Refermat.
Garrison has been abruptly shipped off to his grandmother Mae’s home in the country for what he’s sure will be a long and boring summer. It isn’t long before the other, mysterious guests in her large home have Garrison questioning everything. And then an injured girl, Carly, is found in the yard. What follows is a clever unwinding of the story of all these folks and how Garrison, Mae and Carly are connected to another world and an evil creature who wants to destroy them and have all the power.
I really enjoyed this book! Although written for a younger age group, the author never “speaks down” to her audience, making it a fun read for this obviously not young adult. The climax of the story is exciting and satisfying, and leaves an opening (hopefully!) for a continuing series.

If you are an adult, don't let the YA tag stop you from reading this one. Every adult remembers the awkwardness of being 14 years old and unsure of your place in the world. It's easy to commiserate with Garrison about being dumped at his grandmother's farm for the summer with no access to the internet or even cell phone coverage. He doesn't even know her! By the time I reached page 5, I was hooked. Being a grandmother myself, I knew there had to be a good reason for the grandmother's strange behavior. I found the "two worlds" aspect of this fantasy easy to grasp and loved the friendships that developed between them. My grandchildren will enjoy The Invisible War as much as I did.

This book was a wonderful surprise! I don’t ever read fantasy, but The invisible War has me ready to explore a whole new genre. This is a story that keeps you guessing with its twists and turns, draws you in as you meet the characters, both human and otherwise, and definitely leaves you wanting to read more. Emily Refermat is a talented writer, and this debut novel does not disappoint. This book is unique in that I can read it as an adult, but my middle school kids can read it and enjoy it too. I am already looking forward to the sequel!
