This has some good pictures and interesting discussion, but is nowhere near as instructive or revelatory as the Chinese Art Close up book in the same series.
The themes around which it is centered are so broad and theoretical that they don't really illuminate anything cultural, unlike the Chinese equivalent. The number of artworks is also rather small, although the large number of detail photos is useful and speed you to examine them in some detail.
Perhaps the weakness of the British museum collection is the real reason behind it.
It's amazing how few books are available on Japanese art are available, so this is welcome.

Lovely high quality images. Worked as an broad introduction to Japanese art but lacked detail because of that. I feel like this would’ve been a better experience for me if I actually knew shit about famous western artists. Tbh all the references to that flew over my head.

This is more of a coffee table book with some lovely pictures than an academic study of the history of Japanese art. That said, it is a perfect introduction to the style. Organised into themes rather than time periods, the book shows the differences in subject matter, style of painting and ideas of beauty from Western art. It also shows the importance of different elements within Japanese culture - the supernatural, nature, beauty, theatre and turmoil. Definitely worth a look for those interested in the art from this country.

It was a nice, swift read-through of the Japanese art, its quick development and important periods.
Nothing that would take you too deep, but it doesn't intend to anyway; it is just a good introduction that I found when visiting Kunsthalle in Prague. If you want to step into the world of Japanese art for the first time and you don't like heavy art books with many, many details, this is a good and easy start.

Japanese Art in Detail, by John Reeve, is a small but beautiful collection of Japanese artwork spanning the centuries. It covers everything from woodblock prints to ceramics, sculpture to theatrical Nō masks.

It starts with the question “There are many books on Japanese art, so why another one?” and goes on to explain that this book is an introduction of sorts, and no prior knowledge of Japanese art is necessary. I agree wholeheartedly with this answer. Anyone going in without previously studying Japanese art will have no trouble understanding and appreciating it. The book is divided into themes and in the beginning of each, we are given an explanation of the theme and how it relates to Japanese art. The reader is then given brief histories and descriptions all throughout the book. These passages, though short, are very informative and help in the comprehension of the work being shown.

As for the actual art...the selection is wonderful! The book is in full color and the images are very sharp and lively. The title of the book is very apt—the level of detail shown is just astounding. We get to see each work both in its entirety and as a close-up of a section. These close-ups truly add to the appreciation of each piece, as we can see the amount of work and expertise that went into it.

This book is great for anyone interested in Japanese art and culture, or just art in general. The collection is beautiful, informative, and covers a wide range of themes and periods. I definitely recommend it!

A great introduction to Japanese art, all the quirkiness and beauty. The descriptions are brief yet illuminating. Even familiar works like Hokusai's "Great Wave" feel new. The device of presenting a work then zooming into its details encourages effortless attention to the work.
