“We were both damaged souls, a product of our families and not our actions.”
every chapter was literally the same. its like they knew how to say two sentences and called it love lmao. its not as boring as the first book but equally as repetitive & basic.

All opinions expressed within this review are uniquely my own & freely given! Until next time... Happy Reading!
This was probably one of the most heart wrenching, heart warming Mafia books I've read in awhile. Multiple Mafia families, two countries, a generation involving a Mafia Princess and several Mafia Princes wanting more than "Old Country Rules," contracts to eliminate the lives of several people (including a Kingpin), shattered hopes and dreams, revenge, and a love story right in the middle of it all. There was nothing in Piper Stone's story didn't elicit an emotional response one way or another. The chemistry between Francesca and Michael, aka Kelan, is palpable and yet it begins with dubious consent making me wonder who the bad guy was. THIS was such a GREAT storyline with characters that were relatable in their emotions making them easy to love or love to hate. I was thrilled to be given a copy of this book and am happy to give my honest and voluntary review.
This was another story that takes the reader down a dark twisted path. I have come to love dark mafia stories and this one by Piper Stone was wonderful. Enemies to lovers, Francesca and Michael sort of dance around each other. He wants to use her as revenge but his feelings are getting in the way. Very well written and a page turner, this is one smoking hot book you don't want to miss out on!!
She was my retaliation, a necessity in a world where men ruled, and women were considered nothing but playthings. Only this woman was different. Intelligent. Beautiful. Ballsy. And I would enjoy breaking her.
I am no stranger of Piper Stone's work, this being my second read by her. The first one, Torched, was a 4 star read so her new releases immediately went on my "must read" list. When I saw Taken as Collateral, I had high expectations. The cover was intense and the blurb was promising. The only question that remained was if it would be another 4 star (or higher) read or a complete flop? Well I might have I liked Torched, but I LOVED Taken. Its intense and sexy, keeping you on the edge of your seat while giving you more than you can handle at times. It is evident the amount of dedication gave to this novel, because it shows in every complex puzzle piece. I only have one problem, I need so much more of the "universe" she created within this story.
Time to come out of hiding. Time to make final decisions. Time to initiate the final battle.
Book Facts: Told in dual POV, this dark mafia romance is a standalone with a guarenteed HEA. It does contain dark elements and sexual situations (including spankings and questionable consent issues) that might be sensitive to some readers. Francesca Alessandro was only meant to be taken as a hostage, collateral as a warning to her father. A mafia princess the property of a mafia prince who never wanted to be king. He never planned to want to keep her, to help her.....he never expected her fight would be so addicting, that she would come to crave the lessons he taught. Now he intends to never let her go, he will protect her no matter the cost. But how can you protect someone when you don't know who the real enemy is? How deep will he be willing to go to keep her safe and make her his forever?

5 Favs from Taken: the wall scene (Chapter 6), Michael & Francesca's sexual chemistry, the forest scene, Dominick, Positano room scene. Honorable Mentions: the "Sons of Darkness"-idea, Michael & John Paul's relationship, the Massimo connection.
5 Hates from Taken: "Fuck you" (I hope to never see it in any book I read for at least 2 weeks), the anxiety I felt a majority of the book, Franco, the Shane visit, the ending (only bc I want MORE)
Characters: "Why? Because you belong to me. As crazy as it sounds, you are mine. And why would I protect you? Because that’s what men do."
Michael Cappalini: The Facts: only son to mafia kingpin Ricardo Cappalini, considered the most notorious and dangerous man in Cali . looks nothing like a mafia prince/king with his gorgeous face and boyish grin. heir apparent to the Cappalini family but doesn't want it. Famous actor by name of Kelan Price, nicknamed by fans as the Carnal King. Inducted in the mafia at 11, witnessed his 1st at 12, killer by age of 19, & his mother murdered in front of him at 25. After promising his mom mere weeks before her death, he walked away from the family business but two attempts on his father's life" brings him back as the boss and starts a war. He may hate him, but he can't sit by and let everything he worked to get or finish the job. He is ruthless and dangerous.... one scary mofo. He is calculated & cunning but also shows mercy and tries to prevent as much bloodshed as possible. He accepts his true nature, one of absolute domination and one he considers a monster. He refuses to love or hold anything as precious because he wouldn't be able to handle the grief. Underneath it all, he just wants to make his dad proud. He doesn't even know all the details of his identity, the truth being one that I didn't see coming. Connection to Francesca: In his attempt to avoid bloodshed, he offers her a deal... work with him to take down the Saltori family and he will save her from her soon to be marriage, giving her a new life. The catch? She will belong to him in every way. He fully intends to completely dominate her in every way. He saw right through her good girl act, into the girl who really craved the darkness. He soon realizes he cares for her, sees her as more than a pawn and has a strong urge to protect her. He also recognizes something in her, and sees his assumptions about her were wrong. He is afraid to feel what he already feels for her, she is considered a weakness in his world. When the stakes are raised, he makes it his priority to keep her safe even if that means letting her go. How I felt about him: At first I really liked that he was trying to stay away from that life. When he does take over, it bothered me that he appeared to be kinda weak or better yet, not cold or ruthless enough to handle the task at hand. That all changes very quickly. I love that he makes mistakes, that he doesnt pretend to know how to handle everything. I love that he isn't afraid to admit his feelings for her, that he can be vulnerable with her in rare moments. He is such a complex character, which was fitting considering he haf a starring role in a very complex story.
5 Favs about Michael: how he steps up when he has to, his merciful ways, his dominant side, his selflessness & protectiveness when it comes to Francesca, his devotion & respect for his father. Fav Quote:“You were always meant to be mine.”
Francesca Alessandro: The Facts: mafia princess of the Alessandro family (very powerful in the Italian mafia in Italy and positioned w the highly feared Massimo Borgata). In a world who sees women as commodities, she is seen as highly valuable, some say priceless.....THE Italian princess. Different than the other women in their "world"--- intelligent, beautiful, ballsy, stubborn. A fighter and refuses to break. She grew up in a spoiled/ pampered life but since coming to America to attend Yale (business admin), she had sworn off her father's money and lived off only what she made herself. Had an impressive job w a financial firm in Chicago then moving out to LA per her father's request. She loves America more than her life in Italy. Set to marry Vincenzo Saltori in an arranged marriage (one that is a piece of a bigger game), she doesn't want to marry him. Set to inherit $500M she doesn't want after her wedding. "F you" is her fav phase. Totally impatient. Insecure with her body -- never had a man ravish her or show her true passion. A pawn in a dark and dangerous game she wants no part in. Blames herself for her sisters death. Her connections to the Massimo family are much deeper than anyone could imagine. Connection to Michael: she doesn't know who he is or how powerful he is at first (even though he looks familiar)and sees him as a pretty boy who is in over his head, but accepts the deal (with no intentions of keeping it). She is taken just hours b4 her wedding, his prisoner fully expected to obey and submit. It takes just one look into his eyes to realize he is more dangerous than Vincenzo could ever be. She totally tries to resist his domination, but realizes quickly just what it does to her body. When he finally tells her his name she is stunned and scared, she now knows just how much trouble she is in. She plans to play the part until she can strike. She begins to see who he is behind the mask, the one that is just like her. She may want him, long for him BUT her desire to live/survive is greater. She may not admit it, but she craves his domination. Despite everything, she can't seem to hate him or want him hurt--- she understands him and understands why he is doing what he's doing and actually wants to help him. She falls for him, yet she refuses to be any mans OBJECT of affection. How I felt about her: at first, I actually really liked her and saw her as misunderstood --- she wasn't entitled or a brat.... she was a badass in a crappy situation. It didn't take long for that to change though, her "how dare you" and "do you know who I am" attitude shines through when in crisis. As I got further in, I began to understand and like her again. I love how she never loses her strength, she may have fallen for him but she refuses to allow herself to be treated as a child or as an object. Despite the fact that she makes many seemingly "stupid" moves, I totally understand most of them and see her as trying to help. I knew she would be much more vital to the overall "war plot" than simply a pawn. But probably my favorite part is that she never once tries to change him or demand him give anything up....all too often authors ruin amazing heroines by making them suddenly make the man choose between being with them or the life they live (even though they are okay with it until they know the man loves them).
5 Favs about Francesca: her desire to survive/never give up mentality, "I am no man's object of affection", her past (because its such an interesting dynamic to the story), her bravery & strength, her refusal to bow down or not speak her mind Fav Quote:I had actually fallen hard for the dangerous and exhausting man, but I was no man’s object of affection. Not again.
Favorite Quotes/Highlights: “Make no mistake, Francesca. I. Will. Own. You. And there is nothing you can do about it.”
“He’s not a man you cross,” he said quietly. “I’m not the kind of woman you cross either.”
“You smell so sweet.”“And you smell like an ass.”
“Don’t tease me, little princess. Ride me. Take all you want because it’s the last time you’ll ever be in control.” His words were husky, drilling into me, driving me to the point of madness. I could listen to the sound of his sultry voice for hours. “We’ll see about that.” Purring, I did as he commanded, rocking up and down. Pinning my knees against him. “Like that?”“Just like that.”
“You’re very beautiful, Francesca. Gorgeous in fact. I will show you the kind of pleasure that will break you free of those chains firmly planted around your neck.”

In the end, Piper carefully mapped out such a complex story in the Mafia world. She truly devoted time in doing it right. Sure, it can get confusing at times --- but she makes sure that you feel the pressure and the weight every decision holds and just how serious this is. Although the first 10% is info -overload (and not super exciting), it is CRUCIAL to understand the importance of what's happening, set the tone for the entire book, and introduce and get to know the key players. You are left in the dark on what parts everyone truly plays and what the game and goal is for a majority of the book. This adds to the intensity as out builds to that point of revealation. The way everyone is somehow connected is rather insane, the reason for the "war" is rather mind blowing. Just when you think the rest is just going to be a "wrap up" of everything now that the threat is over, prepare yourself for the shocks that await. Being left in the dark, even if it causes extreme anxiety (lol), its SO worth the payoff. Once it truly kicks in gear, its one thing after another and just when you think its over, Piper unleashes even more revelations that knock you on your ass.
I’d stopped believing in fairy tales, but not in dark tales of nightmares. I knew my heroes were men created out of evil, men finding a taste of humanity. There would be no white steed taking us to a magic castle, but there would be salvation.
And don't even get me started on the romance at the center of this chaos. Its definitely a build up between these two. It doesn't take long for them to get physical BUT to build on that? It is actually special to read - and makes it so easy to connect to them as a couple. One of my favorite aspects is how they misjudge each other at first: her thinking he is in over his head and definitely not someone powerful enough to go against the Saltoris (or her father), him assuming she is an arrogant and entitled mafia princess living a spoiled and pampered life. I love the authenticity of how they come to care about each other, not pretending that it isn't about the passion/lust/sex initially to then discovering that they are the same....two people who tried so hard to get away from this life only to be dragged back in without a choice. They accept each other for who they are, neither an overly emotional/affectionate person....yet that makes the "tender" moments that much more swoon-worthy. And I could hardly handle these two and their sexual chemistry, the resulting scenes were intensely hot.
Obeying him? That would be difficult. Accepting his darkness? I would find a way.
Overall, this is yet another book that is easy to recommend. It's intense and suspenseful, one that will take days for my anxiety to return to normal from. It only leaves me with one hope.... that Piper Stone isn't finished with this world she so masterfully created. I would LOVE to see this turn into a Sons of Darkness series or maybe even Grinder or Vincenzo can have a love story with a special lady.
We’d begun this journey with a series of lies and a criminal act. We’d end it with the truth. One way or the other.

Struggled to read. Became bored DNF. Issues: 1. Very superficial connection between Francesca and Michael. He sees a picture of her, kidnaps her for business reasons and then has sex with her on day 1 (no build up, no insight on his feelings towards her, the harshness makes no sense and a rather dull sex scene too). 2. She's quite immature/bratty. 3. Michael completely contradicts himself. 4. Just bit boring really.
Kelan’s story wasn’t really told. We know from other stories like Dominick Luigiano, that Kelan/Michael’s story could have been expounded. Standard mafia steals princess story.
Change your name, hide your identity, and find another job, but you're still the son👺 of your father👹! This book is rather slow slogging for a while in the beginning. The author had to introduce the characters and set up the story, and it was a bit slow going before I got to the man meat!
Michael🐺🍆⛲🔫🔪, Our studly and handsome hero, is treated as an illegitimate son, but he's still the heir apparent to his father's👹 LA mafia business. OH, and BTW, he's also the up and coming movie star, Kelan🐺🍆⛲, too!
When daddy👹 is shot in an assassination attempt, Kelan🐺🍆⛲🔪🔫 must take over the reins of the business, along with dad's trusted bodyguard, Grinder💪🔫🔪.
In order to stop any more bloodshed, it is decided to kidnap Francesca Alessandro💃💋, the beautiful daughter of rival mob boss, Antonio Alessandro.
Kelan🐺🍆⛲🔫🔪 steals her on the way to the ⛪church on the day of her arranged marriage to sadistic mobster Vincenzo!
Michael/Kelan🐺🍆⛲🔫🔪👋, is a Spankenstein👋👋 extraordinaire, and he gets plenty of practice in with disciplining👋 the mouthy and defiant Francesca💃💋.
ARC Received from Booksprout🌱 I also got the ebook with KU.
I liked this very ADULT mafia romance with BDSM elements.
This is a dark mafia romance written in usual Piper Stone fashion. I have to say I struggled with characters and storyline. I didn’t really feel deep connection between Francesca and Michael. Steamy scenes between them were hot but they fell for each other too quickly and it wasn’t really believable for me. I also felt like the whole storyline started to drag at some point and then the ending felt rushed with everything wrapped up too quickly. I always look forward to reading this author but unfortunately this one wasn’t my favorite.

Taken as Collateral is the second book in the Mafia Masters series. This book is standalone, but you will want to read them in order if you are like me.
There is plenty of darkness and lust in this book that will keep you going. Caroline and Scorpions are well-developed characters with a story to sink your teeth into. I highly recommend this story if you are looking for a mafia series.
I enjoyed this dark romance. Drama, danger, unanticipated feelings, violence, brutalty, heat and kink are combined and blended into the tension filled, gritty storyline. Francesca and Michael's romance is far from smooth sailing and rainbows. Conflicts and complications cause plenty of issues as the story unfolds. This is my forthright, volitional rteview.
Loved this steamy read. Kelan didn’t want to be involved with his father and the mafia but when his father is shot, he is out for revenge. Francesca is marrying a man her father chose for her until Kelan decides to use her for collateral. Soon sparks are flying. Fast-paced intense read with lots of drama and great chemistry. I was hooked from beginning to end. I loved it!
This book pulled me in and kept me entranced till the end. The feelings of love, hate, and pain coming out in waves making you want to cry while you read. This was such a beautiful book! I loved the characters' wholesomeness!

Another dark and delicious listen from Piper Stone.. The Sons of Darkness continues with Michael aka Kelan,he is a movie star who has shunned his Mafia roots. He wants a "normal" life and to honor his mothers wishes to carve a life for himself and not get involved in the life his father has led all his life. But unfortunately for Michael he cannot ignore his legacy for long when his family, his father and himself are under threat from an enemy. Francesca also dislike that her family is a Mafia family and now she is being made to marry a man who she does not love...Its buisness and an arrangement that will better both family's but the man she is to marry is depraved and cruel...and unknown to her an enemy of Michael. This is why she finds herself being taken by Michael and held captive, she has no idea if she considers him a threat or her saviour...as she now no longer can marry her chosen husband. No-one suspects Michael has Francesca's abductor because they are unaware that Michael is now the boss as his father is fighting for his life after an attempted assassination. Michael and Francesca are now set on a road of discovery together as secrets and lies are exposed and a desire and passion is unleashed as they give into their attraction. This is another HOT story with a very demanding alpha main character and a very feisty defiant woman who has no option but to submit to the man she is falling for. I was completely enthralled with this book I listened to the audiobook and Jack Calihan takes all the roles in this book...with is slow deep baritone he captivates your attention and I enjoyed listening to him narrate this book. As always Piper Stone weaves a mysterious dark romance that will captivate you until the end. I Loved it. 5 Stars.
Worth 5 stars I'm a big reader and read alot but I will say there were some words that I read that I didn't understand. But I did enjoy the book I love storys that have his and her chapters very much love them. I enjoyed the plot and story line I will say it was for sure a twist in the book that I didn't see coming which is interesting I normally can figure books out so it was refreshing. I will say I did read the first book in this series i know you can read them as stand alone. And i don't remember the ending being like the first one but i did jump into a different book. So in other words i wasn't happy that there wasn't a epilogue about what there life was 6 months or longer down the road. But it's okay i still very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone it was very spicy and alot of delicious details in the story. Thank you for taking the time to write such a great book and I so moving on to the next one in the series.
This book had a surprising amount of mystery, intrigue, and suspense. There was also a bit of violence.
Michael and Francesca seemed have somewhat of a toxic relationship, yet it seemed to work for them. Michael's actions prompted a flood of reactions from his enemies. There were some twists and turns throughout the book.
It seemed to me that Michael and Francesca's sexual relationship took a back seat to the mafia mystery, which wasn't an issue for me, as I wasn't feeling much of a connection between the two.
The mafia secrets that had been building throughout the book seemed to wrap up pretty quickly toward the end of the book. In fact, I had to read it a couple of times to make sure I understood all of the aspects of the mystery.
Michael and Francesca ended up together, uncovering the secrets of their fathers, their families, and ended up with their HEA.
I didn't finish this story, however, I have read and liked many other stories written by Piper Stone and feel she doesn't deserve anything less than four stars for this book. I have seen the confirmation in the other reviews, that many readers liked the story and, I won't lower the rating just because it turned out not to hold my interest. I found myself skipping several pages until suddenly, I was halfway through the book, and I had no interest in seeing how it ended. I couldn't "relate" to either the main character nor their drama, and with the number of sideline stories going on, I felt like I was reading a soap opera, and I hate soap operas.
I enjoyed this well-written romantic suspense. Ms. Stone cleverly uses a two-prong plot. One prong is their romantic journey. The second prong is one of suspense and mystery. It follows Caroline and Scorpions quest to discover the truth behind malicious events designed to force him to liquidate his uncle’s estate. I appreciated the rich conversational and internal dialog revealing Caroline and Scorpion’s backstories. I liked the use of a dual point of view to illuminate their dreams and vulnerabilities. Lastly, Ms. Stone’s use of descriptive language paints vivid and memorable scenes. One memorable scene showcases the barn burning and Caroline fighting the smoke and flames to save the trapped horses. This scene pulls readers into the scene giving them an eye-witness view. This was a captivating read. Well done, Ms. Stone.
This is the second book in the Mafia Masters Series. This is a dark mafia romance. Francesca and Michael's story is fast paced and intriguing. Michael is a Dom, commanding, ruthless, and powerful. Francesca, a mafia princess, is sassy, and strong. They share an instant attraction, and a sizzling chemistry. They are perfect together. The storyline is suspenseful. The supporting characters are intriguing. Jack Calihan did a great job with the narration.
Very exciting and so many twists and turns, you never know who is good or bad until the author lets you know. Extremely suspenseful and very graphic in details. The main characters are very dynamic and from one page to the next, they either love or hate each other. Lol. The book is very detailed and in order to keep up with the story, I read slowly in order to understand what was going on.
I enjoyed this like I did book one, even better I would say. Primarily cause the story didn't feel as rushed and the end was longer with more detail. MCs are both enjoyable and Michael is just sexy. Can be a trigger for Sexual assault so please know that going in, this is a dark Mafia romance so so expect all hearts and flowers. Jack Calihan kicked ass narrating, his deep voice is perfect for this type of character!
Loved it !!!! I loved how Dominique from the first installment made an appearance in this story !! Michael Cappolini a sexy actor and the son of a magic boss has to step in while his father heals from several assassination attempts. This story was a fantastic read, there was so much action and seduction I couldn’t put it down !! The ending was perfect !!!
Love Piper Stone! Francesca was only to be taken captive until her father could pay a debt, Francesca fought back. Michael now has other plans for her. Love the characters and story. Jack Calihan does a fantastic job bringing the story and characters to life. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
A very enjoyable Mafia romance with a believable and exciting plot. I found the characters easy to connect to especially our two MCs. There are some early scenes that may be triggers for some people as there is clearly a lack of consent. Well written, slightly dark (well it is a Mafia romance) story that held my attention from start to finish.
Taken as Collateral (Mafia Masters #2) was a good read by Piper Stone. Michael left the family business and became a movie star. He took Francesca as collateral and a warning to her father. She fought back and he didn’t expect that. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
Give me a solid mafia romance any day! Add in a stand alone series with characters from the other stories within and I'm hooked! I do prefer having a male and female narration but truly this performance is solid! Francesca and Michael are an interesting match. Both doomed by their heritages but never giving up! Definitely a solid read/listen!
It is a scene from the real world and no matter how bad things are, LOVE will conquer all.....Michael and Francesca learn it the hard way but all ends with them protecting one another
