Faced with the dilemma of altering history, they decide to fight for the Scots against the British Army, led by the Duke of Cumberland. Major Derek McAndrew, Captain Connor McAndrew, and Sergeant Major Ian McKenzie must replenish ammunition and devise a modern Scottish military using 18th-century technology to confront the imminent large-scale invasion aimed at crushing the rebellion. Picture this: I’m juggling a 60-hour workweek, wrangling three acres of Texas land, and trying to be the best husband, father, and-my favorite title-Grandpa. And then, on a complete whim, I dove headfirst into the world of storytelling.

It all began with a simple Ancestry DNA test and a family tree that brought my Scottish roots roaring to life. Suddenly, I was obsessed with all things Scottish and Irish, especially the legendary Battle of Culloden. One day, as I was about to step into the shower, a wild thought struck me: What if the Jacobites had advanced weapons at Culloden? That spark became a blaze-imagine a 150-man Scottish Highland regiment, trained for modern warfare, suddenly transported back in time, one week before the fateful battle.

When I shared the idea with my son, he just shook his head and said, “Dad, I want whatever it is you’re smoking.” (I promise, it’s just imagination!)

Now, with two books published and at least two more on the way in this thrilling series, I’m living proof that it’s never too late to chase your wildest dreams-or to rewrite history, one page at a time.

Such a unique story part history, part war drama, and totally gripping.
I’m a sucker for historical fiction, but this took things to a whole new level. Seeing a modern military unit try to fit into a world two centuries behind was fascinating. But what surprised me was how much heart this book had. The personal struggles, the moments of doubt, even the quiet scenes with the Highlanders it all felt grounded. The only reason it’s not five stars is because a couple of chapters dragged a bit for me, but I still couldn’t put it down.

Recompense is a gripping and imaginative time-slip novel that brilliantly blends modern military warfare with one of Scotland’s most pivotal historical moments. When the 4th Battalion, Delta Company of the Royal Highlanders Regiment is thrown back to April 1746, just days before the Battle of Culloden, the story instantly raises a compelling question: should history be preserved, or rewritten. Jay Anderson delivers a fast-paced, high-stakes narrative where modern soldiers armed with advanced tactics, discipline, and ingenuity must adapt to 18th-century limitations. The challenge of replenishing ammunition, reverse-engineering modern warfare with period technology, and building a functional Scottish fighting force creates constant tension and authenticity.

Great story

First off, I was told to read this book by my friend. He said he knows the author, and that is what it is. But, I thought it was something worth mentioning before I wrote my review. I rarley write reviews unless the book is terrible or amazing. This is a middle ground, but I said I would write one in support; for better or worse, I said it would be a 100% honest. One thing I will say is that this isn't my typical genre, but it leaned close enough to fantasy as the story went that I pleasantly enjoyed the story without any obligation to finish.

1st- the story is great. Slightly jumpy, but never so far as to be lost. And by jumpy, I mean from character to character. Most books I read, they use some way to separate the scene from one character to another. Saying that, I didn't down rate for this. Everyone has their own style, and his is still easy enough to follow for the story to flow.
2nd- I found the punctuation very strange. There are places where a character continues speaking without quotation marks. I also found the use of multiple at the end of sentences weird, but once I got used to it, I could understand how he wanted the characters to speak.
3rd- how he described characters felt clunky to read at times.
4th- there were times when it felt like the characters where changing the way they was speaking. (Ye or ya interchanged with yes or yea is the same sentence or two.)

TLDR: Not my typical genre but a great story with a strange reading style. If you can get past that, it is a great story. I can't wait for book two and to see how the story progesses.

What a phenomenal read! This gripping tale throws you headfirst into a high-stakes clash of eras, where modern warriors stand shoulder to shoulder with Highland clans in a desperate fight for Scotland's survival. The idea of a fully equipped 4th Battalion, Delta Company being thrust into the week before Culloden is absolutely genius and it's executed with precision and heart.

Major Derek McAndrew and his team are the kind of heroes you root for from page one. Their leadership, ingenuity, and unwavering loyalty to their newfound cause bring both intensity and emotion to the story. The fusion of modern tactics with 18th-century grit is masterfully handled, and the result is a vivid, exhilarating narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

This is more than just an alternate history it’s a celebration of Scottish identity, courage, and the power of unity. If you're looking for an edge-of-your-seat adventure that honors the past while reimagining it with bold creativity, this book delivers in every way. An absolute triumph!

I picked this up out of curiosity and finished it in two sittings it's that good. The story of a modern Scottish regiment sent back to the eve of Culloden is not just clever, it’s profoundly moving. The writing captures the brutality of war, the heartbreak of history, and the fierce spirit of the Highlanders. What struck me most was how real the characters felt Major McAndrew’s leadership, the camaraderie among soldiers, and their moral struggle to change history while honoring it. It’s a brilliant fusion of action, heart, and historical reverence. This is more than a “what if” it’s a tribute to everything Scotland has fought for.

Unbelievably Awesome!

I LOVE time travel stories! Especially, ones that send modern military soldiers way, way back in time. This was a can't-put-down and can't-stop-reading kind of story. The fact that they are a Scottish troop and ended up in Scotland's historical past while on a mission in the middle east brings its own excitement. Yeah, I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys this type of genre. I can't wait for book 2 to know what happens next! 👍👍

I wasn’t expecting to cry in a military time-travel novel, but here we are. There’s so much heart in this book. Yes, there are incredible battle scenes, tactical brilliance, and gritty realism, but what stayed with me was the humanity. The bonds between soldiers, the impossible decisions they face, and their love for a Scotland that isn’t even theirs it’s haunting. This is storytelling at its finest.

This book hits every note just right: thrilling action, deep historical detail, and characters you can't help but root for. The contrast between 21st-century soldiers and 18th-century warfare was fascinating and never felt gimmicky. Major McAndrew and his brother Connor are compelling, flawed, and heroic in the best ways. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time. Would give it 10 stars if I could.
