I wasn't a fan of the first volume one of Captain Marvel. I thought it was angsty and full of too much forced Girl Power.
Just my opinion...doesn't make it true.
The title grew on me, but it never blew me out of the water.
Needless to say, I wasn't expecting much when I cracked this open.
First things first, I'm into comics for the explosions, crazy superpowers, and funny dialogue. And if I happen to learn a moral lesson along the way? Bonus.
But.
You've gotta entertain me.
This was entertaining.
Carol seemed like a real person to me this time around, and not just a cliché female superhero for women to rally around.
She's a Star Wars' junkie, and she loves her mangy quasi-evil cat, Chewie. In fact, when she can't find anyone willing to care for the beast while she's in outer space, she sticks it in a crate and takes him with her.
The Guardians of the Galaxy show up for a little bit to help out when a mysterious enemy attacks her, which I personally loved!
Rocket and Chewie don't exactly get off on the right foot, though. I mean, usually when Rocket starts screaming, "Kill it with fire!", it's not a good sign.
I think there's more to this than meets the eye...
Did I mention Carol's obsession with Star Wars?
Yeah, it's cheesy, but it made me giggle...
The rest of the story is kind of Paint by Numbers, with Carol helping a group of folks who are getting evicted from their planet by Star-Lord's father J'son. He claims the planet is poisonous...and is only trying to help them out.
It was pretty good, and there was (naturally) a bit of an evil overlord twist to the reasons Pete's dad wanted them gone.
It's not the bestest plot evah, but it was fun to read.
So. Yeah, this was kind of perfect for me.

She now uses her abilities to protect her planet and fight for justice as an Avenger. She is Earth’s Mightest Hero...she is... CAPTAIN MARVEL!”
Most people would probably find being a superhero enough to fill their lives with excitement, but Captain Marvel isn’t most people and is feeling restless. So when Tony Stark pitches Carol the idea of sending an Avenger into space to head off some of the cosmic threats she jumps at the chance. Her first assignment is to return a comatose alien who made it to Earth back to her home planet, and along the way Carol bumps into the Guardians of the Galaxy. Even though she’s making plenty of new friends Carol finds herself in a complicated mess involving the forced evacuation of an entire planet of sick aliens and the Spartax Empire..
This isn’t anything groundbreaking, but it is a fun Marvel space adventure that I found enjoyable overall. This current incarnation of Carol Danvers is rich from a character standpoint. She’s a confident and powerful superhero whose background as a military officer gives her an appreciation for discipline and order, but she has a taste for adventure. She’s also not above enjoying a good brawl and kicking the crap out of people who deserve it, and her actions helping the aliens out show how much backbone she has. Her interaction with the Guardians provides some good laughs, and I particularly liked Rocket’s freak out over Carol’s pet cat that she brought to space with her.

Captain Marvel gets a new number one volume. Why? Because she’s now in spaaaaaaaace!
Carol will team up with four nobodies to form the poor man’s Guardians of the Galaxy - with a cameo from the actual Guardians of the Galaxy in a desperate attempt to leech off of their popularity! Carol will help an alien get back to her alien people and find them a home on some alien world - but not before some baddie aliens try to kill them! You won’t believe how disinterested you’ll be in this super-bland comic!
I didn’t think Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel could get worse but she found a way to do it and it was to send her into a mega-crap Star Wars prequel knockoff storyline. DeConnick is so unfunny and lame she literally has Carol say the line “These are not the droids you’re looking for” - HAHAHA that was funny, what, 30 years ago? Maybe never? And it’s been done to death since.
Arguably the worst parts of the Star Wars prequels were the tedious scenes where the galactic senate debated trade talks, diplomatic sanctions and more crap you couldn’t believe you were seeing in a Star Wars movie. Good news if you loved that because there’s a ton of that in this book! More one-dimensional alien characters debate alien laws you couldn’t care less about while Captain Marvel hangs about as uselessly as a Hollywood celebrity acting as a UN Ambassador. Even the bad guy - King J’Son of Spartax, Star-Lord’s pop - appears as a hologram like the Emperor and her cat’s called Chewie!
The story is the most shallow and forgettable one imaginable. I’m still at a loss as to why Captain Marvel could be considered an interesting character because DeConnick is utterly unable to write her that way. Her dialogue is cliched and flat and you better believe that if she can’t make the main character seem compelling, she can’t make any of the supporting cast either. David Lopez’s art is fine but nothing special and wholly unremarkable. This volume is a total bust and even with a new number one, Captain Marvel remains one of the lowest selling titles on the roster.
Rather than reboot the series by sending Carol arbitrarily into space, they need to replace the writer. DeConnick’s tried for, what, 4 years now? She’s failed. Get someone else in, Marvel.

Some high-flying, space opera fun with Carol Danvers. What's not to love?
Other than when you step on a four-sided die, maybe. Those effing things are like caltrops, they are. But, I guess that has nothing to do with this book.

My "reading" of comics is sporadic, but when I "read" one as good as this I have to wonder why.
I have always enjoyed the MCU and Avengers, so when this popped up as a read on Amazon Prime, I jumped at the chance.
Although I have the Captain Marvel film, although I haven't watched it yet, so didn't really know what to expect. What I didn't expect was an excellent set of stories, with some great graphics/drawings and all with a healthy dose of humour.
And now comes the crunch, I've looked at the next episode, and it aint cheap, which means I will probably not go on to read the next episode, which is a shame !!

An unconscious alien girl, Tic, appears on Earth in a rocket. Captain Marvel is tasked with returning her to her planet. Tic and her people were forced to be relocated because the builders destroyed their world. Now it appears their new planet is poisoned, but they refuse to relocate. Captain Marvel does what she can to help and with the help of some locals finds out things are vastly different than they believed.
Higher, Further, Faster, More wasn't what I was expecting. I was hoping to get an exciting view into Captain Marvel because she's always seemed more like the super strong background character to me. After getting to know her a bit more it seems like the background may have been the best spot for her. She's not all powerful, but she seems unbeatable. I don't think she was harmed in any real way in the volume.
Carol is kind, but somewhat bland to me. The volume attempted humor far more than I would have imagined, but it fell flat.

For all those who don't want to bother, the short(er, since I could talk the leg off a dead horse) story is this: Once upon a time, I LOVED Kelly Sue Deconnick's Captain Marvel and gushed profusely about her. Yes, I'm the feminist lefty that also loved the movie with Brie Larson.
But...this is pretty bland and lackluster. Captain Marvel is assigned into space where she stumbles upon Tic, an alien refugee. Her planet was destroyed, her people relocated by Starlord's father to Torfa, a world that is proving poisonous to them, thus necessitating in a new relocation, which will decimate their population. She meets up with A RagTag Group of WeirdosTM, compiled of individuals the writers creating by thinking that "quirks" like enjoying music, making quips, being grumpy, giving yourself cutesy names and being a lesbian will make a character endearing in 7 panels or less.
The whole 6-issue plot has been done a million times before and better pretty much everywhere else. None of the characters are remarkable and after these 6 issues, I doubt we'll ever see any of them again (why should I care again?); the plot tries to be deep and complex and just comes across as the Same Old Overlord story we're all familiar with (The Emperor is BAD and wants MONEY AND POWAH). In general, I was stifling yawns and groans and would probably have quit had I not bought these six individual issues along with the subsequent 2 trades.
I would personally pass, unless you are a diehard Captain Marvel fan.

Have you ever seen a little girl run so fast she falls down? There's an instant, a fraction of a second before the world catches hold of her again...a moment when she's outrun every doubt and fear she's ever had about herself and she FLIES. In that one moment, EVERY little girl flies. I need to find that again. Like taking a car out into the desert to see how fast it can go, I need to find the edge of me and see where I belong.
I read this book for the read harder challenge task to "read a superhero comic with a female lead". I haven't read much in the way of superhero comics, but I have to say I loved this. The artwork is superb and the story is fun, exciting and intelligent. Captain Marvel is an awesome female lead and I can't wait to read more in this series!

There is a contender for leading lady in my heart (sorry Wonder Woman). Captain Marvel is AWESOME, she has sass, sarcasm and all other 'S' words that make love characters. This volume follows a story that kinda reminded me of Firefly, with cameos from Iron Man, the Iron Patriot and the Guardians of the Galaxy. And some Star Wars references.

Yawn. This book is killing me. Or rather, the art. The acting, facial expressions, blocking, set design - it’s all so flat - or rather, so uninspired and lacking any verve. The story and dialogue might well be big and intriguing, but as it’s portrayed it’s just uneven, uninteresting and unrewarding.

Meet Carol Danvers. She used to be a pilot, but after the explosion of a Kree device gifted her with alien powers, now she's an Avenger who lives in the top of the Statue of Liberty and makes out with Iron Patriot on the side. She's the kind of gal who takes her cat into space. She loves Star Wars and punching people. We have only just met, but I love her.
Even before I really got into the story, I was already sucked into this world. DeConnick's dialogue immediately clues you in to who these characters are, and David Lopez's pencils are pitch perfect. Just the right amount of curves and lightness mixed with utter badassdom. He also does this cool thing with differentiating between Carol as Carol and Carol as Captain Marvel in war-mode. Her costume has a helmet that she pulls her hair through like a mohawk and IT IS SO COOL. Her face is so expressive, like a real person's. The colors in this are gorgeous as well. Every panel is a feast for the eyes. It was a little bit like seeing Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time. Just that riot of alien life in technicolor coming at you, hard and fast and with a sense of humor. Fitting, since the Guardians make a memorable appearance in this book.

The basic arc of the story is that after an alien girl shows up in a life pod asking for help, Iron Man asks Captain Marvel to be the first emissary from the Avengers into space, job description: "Hanging with the Guardians of the Galaxy, bring intel back, and tag out with the next guy." But bringing the alien girl home soon turns into a diplomatic nightmare, with Emperor J'Son of Spartax being a dick and stuff, and there's this whole thing with a poison planet and Carol has to sass her way into everyone's hearts. It's beautiful.
My only complaint is that the ending was a bit predictable.
Also, can I just have at least two of these covers framed and mounted on my wall please? Sooooo pretty. Volume two, due in April, was pre-ordered immediately after finishing this.

Have you ever seen a little girl run so fast she falls down? In that one moment, every little girl flies. I need to find that again. Like taking a car out into the desert to see how fast it can go, I need to find the edge of me... and maybe, if I fly far enough, I'll be able to turn around and look at the world... and see where I belong.When I first starting reading this, one of my first thoughts was this was a terrible mistake. I kept putting it down because I knew what was going to happen (mostly) and bleh I just didn't want to read it. I really was thinking, this is it, i can't reread anymore, because it ruins everything for me. Which I hate, because I love rereading and I have to do it 'cause I have a shitty memory. But anyways, I got past the first few issues and I was once again hooked.
This wasn't necessarily the greatest comic book I've ever read. It's not going to blow you away or knock your socks off or make you look at the world differently. But it's so much fun. And I really love Carol and everything about her personality. She has flaws. She's real. And she's not a hero because she has superpowers, she's a hero because she fights for what she thinks is right, even when all hope might seem lost.
This was a perfect mix of action, humor, and romance (aka practically blink and you miss it). I loved Tony Stark's appearance and when the Guardians of the Galaxy showed up. Rocket cracks me up to no end. "Kill it with fire!" Ahahaha, I was dying.
I don't know if I'll ever read this again, but I'd definitely skim through it as a sort of comfort read. It makes me smile and that's all I really care about.

It’s no secret that I love Captain Marvel, so it’s probably not a surprise that I adored this, too. I love Carol and her stubborn determination to do what’s right, and the fact that she tries to do things that Captain America would approve of. I love her relationship with Rhodey (“I’m never gonna be the one who holds you down”!) and his acceptance of what she needs to do. I love the fact that she takes her cat into space with her, and I love her dumb banter in a fight.
I liked that this ties in with Guardians of the Galaxy, too — not in too obtrusive a way; you only need to know a couple of basic facts about the Guardians, mostly about Peter Quill and his father — so that we’ve got a sense of a whole universe, not just Earth’s problems.
Lopez isn’t my favourite artist for Captain Marvel, but the art is pretty good: clear, expressive, colourful.
Also, gotta love the casual queerness.

Ever so slightly disappointing, because I had high hopes. I love Carol, I really do, especially as written by DeConnick. In fact, I liked just about the entire cast, including the new (and probably never to be seen again) aliens she teams up with in the last few issues. (Jackie is completely fantastic.) But the plot is kind of weak, which is a shame. This could be better.

We begin with Captain Marvel palling around with Iron Man, chatting with a kid who adores her, and making out with a fighter pilot. So naturally, she decides she doesn't know her place on earth. Why? Hell if I know, but she flies off into space to help out with a colony that's on a tough planet. She spends part of the mission with the Guardians of the Galaxy, then they disappear, so she hangs out with a different group of interchangeable space weirdos instead. They run afoul of the Spartax Fleet, evil bad guys who force a planet to evacuate, quoting the head bad guy, "because it is my will." The resolution? Captain Marvel beats them up. The art is bland, such that even splash panels of exploding space ships aren't impressive to look at. I hope the series finds its footing later.

This is my first ever Captain Marvel title. I can't believe I read Ms. Marvel before Captain Marvel. Well I guess most people did right? Captain Marvel was never a huge household name. I didn't even know Carol much besides a few side stories in other books. So I saw this at the library and figured screw it! Let's try it out.
Carol is trying to find herself? So she decides to leave earth and go on an adventure. Out there she meets a lot of friendly aliens, some not so friendly, and learns someone is trying to take over a planet. I think...yeah...
What I liked: Art is solid throughout. No complaints there. I also enjoyed Carol. Smart and fun and when she's mad and fully suited up she looks boss. I also enjoyed the guardians chapter and the first issue a lot.
What I didn't like: None of the characters really stuck after issue 2. All just aliens who felt throwaway characters I couldn't get attached too. Also the plot just boiled down to evil guy trying to take over a planet...been there.
Overall this is around a 2.5. Right in the middle. Some decent fun space adventure but I probably won't remember this much. Might try volume 2 soon.

my favourite cat lady
so i'm really into Carol this week no idea why so i decided to read one of her comic books. i don't really read comics but i remember seeing this everywhere for a while so i got it. i mean yeah it was fun and i liked the art style (love her design she is cute) but the story is ok, won't continue this run. i want to read another comic book with her tho so if you know a better one tell me 😚

Meh!
The plot was super weak, the characters were mediocre, the humour seemed forced and to cut long story short, it was boring. The only saving grace was the surprise encounter with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Oh yes, there’s a tiny bit of Iron Man in there, just saying in case you’re a fan!
Being a hardcore Avengers’ fan, I can’t rate this any lower. Not too bad for a one-time-read!

This is the first comic book I have (probably) ever read. And let's just say I've added a lot more to my tbr pile. The illustrations were awesome and the story, while tiresome at times, was just as good. A really good start for someone who hasn't read a comic before, and now I'm all ready for Captain Marvel's movie!

I really liked this book it had action, it was funny and the art was good. I had never read anything Captain Marvel before and felt this was a great introduction to the characters. the writing in this was good as well, if I have one complaint it's that i didnt care about the people she was trying to protect and they didn't really give me a reason to either. I highly recommend checking this out and I can't wait to get vol.2.

This was great! I'm binging as much Captain Marvel as I can before the movie comes out and this did not disappoint. I think I was sold as soon as she took her cat with her to space!

A mundane story exploring Carol Danvers' purpose in the world. Somehow feeling like she's unhappy on Earth, she sets off into space, runs into the Guardians of the Galaxy, and intrudes in other alien planet's politics and warfare. The artwork isn't bad either but it somehow feels extremely static and uninspiring.

Our story follows Carol Danvers who has come to a crossroads with a new life and new romance. She takes a drastic change in direction and alters her life as she takes on a mission to return to her homeworld. She lands herself in the middle of an uprising, and she must help a civilisation as well as find the people behind this planets issues.

I really loved the artwork and illustrations within Captain Marvel! It was bright and matched the dialogue well.
Plot
YES A COMIC THAT STARTS AND ENDS WITHOUT HALF A STORY. This was a full adventure that I loved going on with Captain Marvel. The plot of this story took place in space and on earth, I liked the contrast and that they both were vastly different. We got to see more emotional issues on Earth but when Carol takes off into space we get to explore who she is as a superhero and I loved it!
Although I hoped this was a starter novel, where we were able to see Captain Marvel become the amazing character we saw here, I was pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed this story.
Characters
I really liked Captain Marvel and the amazing character cameo's within this comic. Captain Marvel was all I hoped she would be, fierce, powerful and kind.
Overall
Captain Marvel, Volume 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More was an amazing starter comic collection! I enjoyed that it was a full and fleshed out story without requiring more volumes. I am excited to see where Captain Marvel can go in further comics!

After loving the first issue, Things go downhill from there, and it turns into a GotG ripoff...guest starring....yup, the GotG.
It loses the Star Wars vibe, and the cool vibe, and gets kinda hokum, mainstream. The art is strong, and Carol isn't a wishy-washy whiny bitch like the last volume, but still, nothing amazing here. I couldn't even bother reviewing it until I remembered I'd read it and not added it to my list...
