This Review is also, in English & German, up on my blog.

Title: Redemption
Author: Andi O’Conner
Series: The Lagacy of Ilvania, #1
Info: 18 Pages – Fantasy – Purple Sun Press

My Thoughts:
I won this book from the author and didn’t really know what to expect from it – I actually also didn’t read the plot before reading it. Just saw it in my kindle App the day I started it then and thought: Let’s give it a try! And what a good idea it was! You can read it very fast (it just took me several days because my nephew was born that day and that interrupted me reading it of course and then I finished it two days later) and it’s written very well. I loved every bit of it. Even if it short, you get completely pulled into the story and want more, as soon as it ends. It makes you exciting for more. As English is my second language I had a word here and there I stumbled over, but it didn’t bother me – that’s how I make my English better.

Minus-Points:
Sorry, but I couldn’t find any...
Plus-Points:
+How well it’s written.
+That you want more of it.
+Even if it shorts and there is happening a lot, it doesn’t feel too fast.

Favorite Characters: You don’t get to know any of the characters well (yet) except of Jae – so I have to go with him (also, because he’s awesome).

Rating: 5 stars – ★★★★★
Last Words: I can’t wait to read the other stories of the series and also get into Andi’s other works – if they are as good as this one, they could fast become part of my faves.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story by Andi O'Connor. Redemption lends a bit of a different tone than her other works (Silevethiel, The Lost Heir) with darker themes surrounding the protagonist and his plight. There is a deep sense of compassion the reader evokes towards him as he struggles against his captors, and a true sense of fear and disheartening at what happens to him. Though, as the title suggests, there is Redemption at hand for the torturous power that dominates the landscape in this story. I felt many times the suffering and sorrow that was expressed by the boy being put through the hellish rituals of his "teachers." There is a deep feeling of sadness, then happiness and empathy that is evoked as the story progresses, which lends the reader a hand to recover from what has been bestowed upon them. Familiar themes of O'Connor's within the story also are presented, dealing with equality, human rights, and feelings of self worth. All in all, a great read, highly recommended, and a great way to get into what Andi O'Connor has to offer :-)

In the Kingdom of Ilvania, there is a school in which young boys are shown the brutality of pain through vigorous and cruel training.  This training is usually done by a "magical trainer" in order for the boys to become a powerful army for the kingdom.  The story follows Jae, who is sold to the school so that his family could marry off his sisters.  He is placed in a cell along with a nine year old boy, who by the looks of it, has been broken by the system.  But there is more at stake than Jae realizes and he will have to choose which side he fights for.  There is a Master in the school that is the cruelest.  After a few months, Jae, is also broken by the system but here is where he can choose for who he fights for and who he will have to fight against.

I stumbled across this short story on r/Fantasy and after reading the blurb, I decided to give it a try.

What I found was an exceptionally exciting and well-written short story that I devoured in the early morning hours before bed. The lightning magic seemed unique and more importantly, very dangerous, while Jae's silent reflection of his life before imprisonment was a nice, somber touch that happened to be my favorite part.

For those looking for a great fantasy short story, look no further. After this short glimpse into what O'Connor has to offer, I for one am excited to see what she writes next.
