After her only Season was ruined, Cora Wilder embraced the freedom that comes with being a confirmed spinster. But her enviable life comes to a crashing halt the day her brother loses everything in a bank run, and the only way she can save her family is to marry a man she loathes.
Gideon Wentworth may have gone too far, once upon a time. But he sees potential in Cora Wilder. She's the kind of woman who could take the ton by storm... if she turned her attention from rabble-rousing to becoming a proper lady. Now that he has her in his bed, he’s determined to mold her into a wife he can be proud of.
But Cora is equally determined. Her starchy, stoic husband is not what she expected. And if she's going to be bound to him by vows, she will find a way to break through his rigid rules. She is surprised to discover the man has a heart… and winning it becomes her new challenge.
Book 4 in the Virtue & Vice series can be read as a standalone.
This is my first book to read in this series and I definitely enjoyed it.
There's some side characters that I don't really know that much about but I did kind of figure out some of their history from the way it was told throughout the story.
Even though she married him only save her family and to get answers as to why he humiliated her in public few years prior, passion flies instantly so does something much deeper than passion. But can she ever truly trust him?
He has ruined her brother's bank in order to gain her hand in marriage. Once he gains her hand in marriage he finds she isn't the same girl she was in her debut season, she's bold, intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind. And he admires her even more for that however now that he has her will she forgive him for not only ruining her years ago but ruining her family?
With the help of a small dog and an aggravating mother in law, they find that the thing they only needed to do to find happiness along was communication between them..
This story was so good.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
I received this book from the author as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no one else.
I like the book cover. It's very pretty with Cora dressed in blue despite what her very annoying mother-in-law Martha said. Blue isn't good apparently.😝 But let's go back a little bit. This was a hard book to get into, much less connect with the characters. They all seemed cold and superficial. Mean. There was a mention of Cora being compared to "crass Americans". You can see the mindset here already. It was all about money, status, and who's who within their proper circle. There's history, which was a little confusing as I began reading this. Two stories were running along side each other. Cora's and Bella's. Which only added more to the confusion.
Cora is considered a spinster at 29. Her introduction to society and potential suiters was ruined by Gideon 11yrs prior at her public piano performance. A bawdy song. Really. The reasoning he caused this drama was ridiculous. A man doesn't go down that path for a woman he wants. He protects her. Cheers her on. Respects her. Gideon is a twisted deceitful... coward. I didn't like him at all. And here we are, Gideon still wanting her and spreading rumors about Cora's brother and his reputation as a bank owner, in order to barter for her hand in marriage. Is that romantic? Not to me. He wants to have his cake and eat it too. Without her knowing, of course. Remember social class and avoiding scandals. Now married, I thought Cora would exact revenge, fight him tooth and nail for embarrassing her, dig into that past, instead she wants him too and gives in. No build up of earning trust. Sure she calls him out on things, she's smart, she grows as a person, but to me it wasn't enough. What about him? Make him earn you outside of the bedroom and dirty talk, Cora. Does he see you as more than that?🙉 You want HR spice that's here too. And when the tables turn at the end, Cora apologizes to him. Say whaaat?!😳 Gideon still can't admit his feelings and he's still trying to protect himself. I can't root for a guy like that. He needs to grow up. When he could have stood up for her against his mother, with Cora present, he didn't. Cora deserved better imo. This one didn't work for me. Sorry. Maybe it could for someone else??!
Thank you to Ms Lomax and Bookfunnel for an early book. I'm voluntarily leaving my honest thoughts on the story I read.
4.5 Stars After her only Season was ruined, Cora Wilder embraced the freedom that comes with being a confirmed spinster. But her enviable life comes to a crashing halt the day her brother loses everything in a bank run, and the only way she can save her family is to marry a man she loathes. Gideon Wentworth may have gone too far, once upon a time. But he sees potential in Cora Wilder. She's the kind of woman who could take the ton by storm if she became a proper lady. A very well written enemies to lovers story, the couple have history, their attraction sizzles. I loved their journey to a HEA which certainly had lots of obstacles to overcome, his mother didn’t like the match & I loved hoe Cora stood up to her. There was also mystery & intrigue as well of a couple perfect for each other. I loved it I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
“Cora” is book four in Carrie Lomax’s Virtue and Vice series. This series is still going strong, “Cora” is a great addition to this world of sin, passion, secrets, and forgiveness. Gideon used underhanded methods to get Cora to the alter. But secrets don’t stay hidden forever. Cora is a great character, she found her own way after being ruined by a prank. She is no simpering debutante but a twenty-nine year old woman who is strong minded and strong willed with simmering passions underneath and talent pouring out of her fingers. Gideon unleashed those passions. Gideon’s mother, Martha, dislikes Cora because of her background. Martha is controlling, bossy, snobbish, and snide. She goes so far as to tell Cora what events to attend, what to wear, and who she can be friends with. A very angst filled relationship to be sure. Martha is a great character to push Cora’s buttons and push her into rebelling. It’s that mother-in-law thing. This story is the romance of two people after years of longing, all the pent up frustration can be felt on the pages. The open door scenes are passionate, erotic, steamy, and hot, hot, hot! There is a secondary plot line as well, we get caught up with Belladonna’s story and Hawke’s duty to the crown. Even Queen Victoria makes a few appearances! I really appreciate an author who can integrate a beloved pet into the story. Titi is wonderful and she adds some humor to the story. “Cora” is told from both Cora’s and Gideon’s perspective. Several characters from earlier books make appearances, however, it is not necessary to have read those books beforehand as this can easily be read as a standalone novel. Overall, the plot is well paced and well thought out. The characters fit so well into their roles as they inhabit this ever growing world. Definitely recommended.
Cora is such a wonderful read! 🤩 It’s the forth book in the series; I haven’t read the previous books but I’m going to be starting them now. I think reading from the beginning would give greater insight into the secondary characters in this book but I read this almost perfectly fine without reading the previous books. The only part I was a little bit confused about was the side story of Belladonna and her problems, but I think this side story runs through all the previous books so I am looking forward to reading from the start of the series to learn more about Belladonna.
The main female character, Cora Wilder is so headstrong and defiant for a woman in this time, she was a joy to read. She is fiercely loyal and protective of her family, friends and dog. She’s a force to be reckoned with. She had her chance to be accepted by the ton eleven years ago but it was ruined by a cruel joke played by a man who she thought wanted to court her. She has two brothers, Eryx, her full brother and Lysander, her half brother who is also a duke.
Gideon Wentworth is the man who ruined Cora’s reputation with the ton and he did want to court her but he wasn’t in a position to do that so he ruined her for everyone else. He is now able to do so but also knows that she hates him for what he did to her so he makes the decision to do a devious thing to almost force her to marry him so that he can redeem himself and also save her brother Eryx’s bank and livelihood. As Cora has kept away from society, he hasn’t seen her since that disastrous night so he doesn’t know how much she has changed and grown in spirit and personality that he could be in for a tumultuous ride with her now.
After they are married, it’s a rocky start for them. They have a passionate electricity between them, even from their wedding day, when they’re near each other is so strong that it seems to be possible that they can work things out. Gideon also has an overbearing mother, who Cora has to defend herself and her friends against throughout the book which she is happy to do but when secrets are revealed about Gideon and actions he took, it could potentially change everything forever between them.
From the beginning of this book I was totally invested in the characters, side characters and Titi, Cora’s little canine friend. The story was so well written and paced perfectly. The plot was rich in detail and description. There’s also a lovely epilogue that I love to see in a book. I thoroughly loved reading this book. I’m so glad to have been introduced to this series. Now I’m going to start from the beginning to enjoy reading each of the characters own stories in this series. I would definitely recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book from Bookfunnel. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.
Cora is Book 4 in the Virtue and Vice series by Carrie Lomax. I have been reading the series and have enjoyed them all but this might be my favorite. In this story, Lomax delivers a captivating tale of love, redemption, and second chances.
Cora Wilder, once a spinster content with her freedom, is thrust back into society’s expectations when her brother loses everything, and her only choice to save her family is to marry Gideon Wentworth—the man who once humiliated her.
Gideon has wanted Cora for years and against the wishes of his family makes her marrying him a condition of helping her brother. Lomax expertly captures the emotional turmoil between Cora and Gideon. Just as Cora begins to trust him, she’s devastated by the discovery of his betrayal. The rollercoaster of emotions is palpable as both characters grapple with their past and the walls between them. Despite her desire to hate him, Cora’s love for Gideon is too deep. I loved that Gideon when faced with losing her he risks everything to save their marriage. When facing their problems they finally communicate and really bare their souls, allowing forgiveness, and healing making their love all the more powerful.
This couple’s journey toward happiness is heartfelt and genuine and a bit of a rollercoaster ride. The chemistry between them, combined with Lomax’s skillful portrayal of their inner struggles, keeps the reader engaged. Gideon and Cora’s dynamic makes for an emotionally rich and satisfying read.
I am waiting for Hawke and Bella’s story so it was nice having Hawke and Bella included as secondary characters providing some excitement for what’s to come in this wonderful series.
Carrie Lomax has crafted a beautiful, emotionally charged story! I highly recommend this series even though you can read each book as a standalone reading the series in order is best.
I received a free copy of this book from the author, and this voluntary review reflects my honest opinions.
Cora is part of a series entitled Virtue & Vice. This series follows the lives of multiple characters who are all somewhat interconnected through a character named Belladonna. While she is not the main character in this novel, she makes several appearances as does her self-titled protector, Hawke. Interestingly, Queen Victoria also makes an appearance or two. The main characters in this novel are Cora and Gideon who are essentially enemies from years before. When Cora was a new debutante, Gideon “ruined” her and she never forgave him. Moving ahead a decade, they resume a relationship under less than honest circumstances. Gideon has become a successful banker during their years apart and he resorts to very underhanded tactics in order to force a marriage to Cora. The marriage starts off badly, as Gideon makes mistakes and Cora deals with family and in-law issues (including a really obnoxious MIL). One character that I’m hoping to see more in the future is Gideon’s younger brother, Reggie, who is confined to a wheelchair. It’s all too rare when characters who are differently abled are included in HR novels. As time goes on, Gideon and Cora become closer and develop a very healthy sex life. The scenes are very detailed and open-door. The graphic nature of the writing doesn’t bother me because there is more going on here than just sex. Any good HR is going to include some drama. This happens not only with our main couple but also with Belladonna and Hawke. And since this is HR, there’s always going to be a happy ending. I’ve enjoyed this series so far and am looking forward to more from Carrie Lomax. She uses history fictionally but also appropriately and there are no references to current culture in her HR novels. I’m happy to recommend this novel, although to fully understand the backstory, you need to read the preceding novels in the series. I was given an ARC copy to review and my opinions are my own.
This was an enjoyable book. I would say this is a 3.5 rounded up to a 4 for me. It was my first of this series and the main storyline was interesting and fun. I enjoyed that Gideon was a banker and Cora was an illegitimate daughter of a Duke, so this wasn’t a fully typical lord and lady story. It was nice to see the way these “on the fringe” of the ton people had to hedge their bets and play even more games to stay viable in that world. It would have been exhausting!
I enjoyed how much Gideon desired Cora and was determined to make her his. Being used to running the family bank and making business decisions, he managed his plan for Cora in the same manner. Thankfully, she had been as attracted to him years prior, so that helped when she was forced into a marriage of convenience with him. It was clever and funny to see how Gideon used deception on Cora, but realized that he deceived himself too. It was good to see growth and realization in the story.
Even Cora grew well in the story. She was strong willed, but kind hearted. She recognized when she hurt people and she made strides to right those wrongs. Her dog was cute too. 🤭 As a couple, they definitely had chemistry and heat.
I am not sure how I felt about a secondary story that was worked into this one that seems to have been woven throughout the other previous books. It didn’t add a lot to this current story and left me with more questions. At random points through the book, we would switch over to this other couple’s journey, but only get certain details. It didn’t break the book for me, and their story definitely seems intriguing, but it just seemed more of an unnecessary distraction. That’s just my opinion.
Overall, I would recommend the book for a little something different than your typical HR books. It was fun and entertaining.
He ruined her first season, and now he’s about to ruin her brother’s bank - unless she marries him...
~ Cora & Gideon ~ She’s a duke’s illegitimate daughter. He’s a prominent banker’s heir. Once upon a time he ruined her to keep her safe, making her Society’s laughing stock. He may have given her the freedom to become her own woman, but she never forgot the man who stole her passion and made her an outcast - even more than she already was. Eleven years later he manipulates her into marrying him - a union she agrees to in order to save her brother - but she’s no longer the shy, eager to please, innocent debutante. No, he, arrogant and controlling, married a strong-willed independent queen, and neither of them willing to bend, it’s only a matter of time before something breaks...
An enemies-to-lovers it’s-always-been-you I-hate-you-but-I-love-you-more marriage-of-convenience between two MCs who have felt attraction to the other for the longest time.
Is it a good plot? Yes! But somehow I couldn’t make myself get invested in their HEA. Both determined, proud, passionate and stubborn people, they have good intentions, yet always stand in their own way. They blow hot and cold, always from one extreme to the other, they know they’re making a mistake yet stubbornly stay the course, and it made these MCs hard to like for me. I honestly cared more for Hawke and Belladonna’s sideline thing than the main couple. Was it the right story at the wrong time for me? Possibly. Right now I would say it was a nice entertaining read, and maybe you need to have read the entire series to get the full picture, but this story just didn't do it for me.
This is finally the story of younger sister Cora. I read the earlier books in the series as they came out, I just wish that I could remember more about them! This book continues the relationship arc of Bella and Hawke. However, they are still on the backburner. Cora agrees to marry Gideon in order to save her brother's bank. Initially, their marriage seems to be a business arrangement for Gideon. Cora has no idea why her would ever want to marry her because she assumed that he had always hated her. This couple had a history. Ten years earlier, Gabriel had orchestrated a practical joke which had ruined Cora's reputation. Personally, I didn't think that Gideon's prank was significant enough to ruin Cora's life. Later, when he revealed his motivations to her, it still didn't seem like enough. I think that there must be more to the story, and I wonder if Belladonna plays a role in it. This was a steamy tale with a happy ending. I'm looking forward to continuing the series and finding out more about the ongoing mystery. I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
Cora was ruined by a man she had never met, leaving her in limbo, with no understanding why. Gideon wants her desperately , the man who ruined her and now devises a way to get her. I enjoyed the premise of this story as it showed clearly how communication is the key in ANY relationship. The way they worked through their issues is rather witty at times, but their coming together to understand each of their flaws was very well written. I adored how Cora dealt with his mother by standing up to her instead of being the preverbal doormat that some women are. What gave the 4 stars was (I feel) the excessive amount of VERY open door sex, domination,BDSM and light voyeurism. I am not a prude, but that got to be too much, to the point I skipped over those scenes, looking for communication between them. (Perhaps a trigger warning would be warranted) . The characters were well developed and the way she found out what Gideon did was a surprise (good job, author!) Mostly enjoyable to read.
I received this story for free and these are my own views.
This book is the 4th in a series so there is a continuing story within the story. Since this was the first book in the series I read, the story within the story was a bit difficult to follow, but once I got into it I understood it well enough. It has made me want to read the first 3 books in the series to better understand that sub-plot.
The main story in the book itself, though, is an enemies to lovers' story. It is well written and it is definitely spicy. I liked the backstory story about the couple and I liked how there were side stories. I also liked the cute dog and his interactions with some of the other male characters. Another thing that I liked in this story is that there was growth in the characters. Gideon deceived Cora, but then realized he was deceiving himself also. I liked how they did work through their issues and that Cora was not a doormat. So, overall, this is a book I definitely recommend.
I received a free copy of this book from the author, and this voluntary review reflects my honest opinion.
I’ve been eagerly waiting for Cora’s story, as she’s been a standout in previous installments with her sharp tongue and refusal to conform. This book finally reveals her past—and the reason she avoids the ton. That reason is Gideon.
Now determined to claim her as his own, Gideon will stop at almost nothing to marry her, even resorting to some very underhanded tactics—despite the fact that she’s the sister of his rival business owner. What follows is a delightful second-chance, enemies-to-lovers romance packed with tension, humor, and heartfelt emotion.
Cora proves to have hidden depths, and I loved watching both characters grow in their understanding of each other. Gideon, especially, comes to realize just how deeply his past actions have affected the people he loves. The witty exchanges between Cora and Gideon’s mother were an absolute highlight—I laughed out loud more than once at her clever put-downs.
This series continues to impress me, and with each new book, it only gets better. Cora’s story was well worth the wait!
I felt sad in parts as I read this novel, as Cora was manipulated into a situation, not of her own making. Crossing boundaries, Gideon Wentworth is a man who does whatever it takes to get his own way. Unfortunately, he played with people's lives, and Cora's in particular. The reception she receives as his wife when Gideon's mother tries to push her into a mold is also painful. Nevertheless, Cora manages to make the best of a bad situation. When the truth eventually comes out about how her husband managed her family, Cora gets her revenge but it is at a price. Fortunately, the novel comes to a good conclusion and Cora finds the fulfillment she deeply desires. I received a copy of this romance as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Amazing characters and wonderful plot. Very beautifully written and easy to read.
I read this book in one breath, it was so good that I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.
Cora Wilder is a strong and determined woman. But in order to save her family, she needs to merry the man she hates, Gideon Wentworth. He wants to mold her into what he wants in a wife. But Cora will break his walls and show him what love means. I loved their journey from enemies to something much more.
Overall I loved this book very much. If you’re looking for an enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, victorian romance then you’re going to love it.
Such a beautiful book! I love when the hero falls first and does everything in his power to have the heroine in his life! But I have to admit that this time Gideon went a bit too far and I’m not sure I would have forgiven him what he did, both times… Cora was way too kind to him! But of course their chemistry was undeniable since the first encounter and they both knew it. Even if they had to work on trust… The Belladonna side story was intriguing and I can’t wait to see its conclusion. I’m hoping for a happy ending for her too! Well written with vivid characters and an intriguing plot: that’s what I ask for in my HR books and this book certainly delivered!
Cora is ruined by a man who could not offer for her, then twelve years later he ruins her family so he can save her family by marrying Cora. This man is totally selfish and made this woman wait 12 years as a ruined woman before offering her marriage. Although, she ultimately forgives him, this man is unworthy of any woman. I detest bullies and men who seek to destroy others for their own gain. The author tries to pass this man off as decent but he is just another bully and pompous fool despite his desire for this woman. Although, Cora is a great heroine, Gideon Wentworth is not worth the ground that Cora walks on.
This is the first I have read in the series so there are some extraneous story lines that I don’t know but could get the gist from the adequate background information given in the story. Main characters were well developed but there are a lot of secondary characters that we don’t really know. I liked the writing of the female character’s thought process need the end of the story as she debates leaving versus staying. Overall I thought it a good story and the timeframe from meeting to marriage did allow for a young woman to grow up making her a strong individual.
How far will he go to get her? Cora and her brother, Eryx, are the illegitimate offspring of a duke. Eryx has invested his inheritance in a bank, lending to some shady customers. Gideon Wentworth has started a rumor that results in a run on Eryx’s bank. And why? Because he wants to take over Eryx’s bank with the additional benefit of marrying Cora. She would never accept marriage to a man she loathes, the same man who ruined her first season, but relents to save her brother’s bank. How long will a marriage based on lies hold stand?
This is a very well written and spicy enemies to lovers' story. The past history between the couple was exciting and interesting. The side stories from secondary characters and other family members and friends were very entertaining and intriguing. The cute pup included was precious. I enjoyed the passionate and hot steamy romance that began. I was really happy with how everything worked out in the end. I highly recommend reading!
I loved this well-written book. Unusual that the two main characters, Gideon and Cora are not perfect and, unlike most historical romances, they are not aristocrats. They are two flawed, but beautiful, individuals and their story is riveting. My first Carrie Lomax book - this is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I will be sourcing other books by this author - in the meantime I am looking forward to Isabelle’s story next.
This was an excellent story! Ms. Lomax has a gift for telling a story. Gideon and Cora were a perfect match. The characters brought the story to life! I loved the little bit of Hawke and Bella in the story and cannot wait to read theirs! Truly a wonderful series! Heat level was perfect! I did receive this as an ARC, I gave my honest review.
A Happy Ever After! An easy story to follow and I have enjoyed it so much. Cora and Gideon had their work cut out for them when they found themselves reunited and having to make decisions which would affect their futures together. It didn't help that his mother was against their union either. I am happy to recommend this story having enjoyed reading an early copy of it.
Cora was so good. I loved that this story was different and how both characters grew so much throughout the story. Cora and Gideon were wonderful characters. I loved the other characters in the story as well. They really added a lot of dimension to the story. This story was full of mystery, intrigue, love, steaminess, and revenge. Wonderful!
This was the first of the series I have read but intend to go back and start the beginning. This is one of the books that once you start reading it you can’t put it down Great story line and well written the story of Cora and Gabriel enemies to friends. Cora married Gabriel to save the family business gradually do fall in love.
Book four of this series is fantastic. The intrigue, mystery and overall plot are excellent. Cora is ready to be a spinster until Gideon decides he's going to marry her after destroying her brother. The characters are rich, relatable personalities that the reader will thoughouly enjoy. A great story.

I had a great time reading this story. I loved the two main characters, Cora and Gideon. They are two strong and passionate characters. Throughout the book, we feel the attraction between them. This enemies-to-lovers romantic trope was delightful. I highly recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Throughly enjoyed reading this age gap romance between a gentleman banker and the half sister of a Duke. Cora and Gideon first met years ago when they glanced at each other across a ballroom and attraction sizzled. Many years later with fate throwing them together in an arranged marriage. Can long buried feelings be resurrected or not.
This is a wonderful read! Lots of twists , turns, and manipulation. Cora is the pawn , ruined by a man she didn’t know then forced into a marriage to him years later. But she is a strong , resourceful woman. It was a delight to see her relationship with Gideon grow and evolve. A most enjoyable story’
