As the secrets and lies mount, the shocking truth reveals why their relationships failed. But will learning from the past give them the skills to build a future with one another?
Alaina Erdell lives in Ohio with her partner and their three crazy but adorable cats. She has a degree in psychology from Gonzaga University. Prior to writing, she worked as a chef. She enjoys painting, experimenting with molecular gastronomy, reading, snorkeling, traveling, and spending time with her beloved nephews.
What a unique story. Hannah and Vanessa’s love story was one of many layers. Some of the time you’ll be so frustrated with them you’ll want to put them in a room and make them talk, but it’s totally worth it in the end. Both characters had a major and positive impact on each other’s lives. While there were some heavier themes in this book, they were handled with sensitivity and woven in well. The side characters were also great. Hoping for Zara’s book in the future 🤞
Thank you to the author and publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
4.5⭐️ This is a story about Hannah who is the CEO of her family’s jewelry company. She is a work alcoholic and can’t let go of any aspect of the job. She intends to break up with her girlfriend Bren, but Bren dies in a car accident before she can tell her. So she’s consumed with guilt at the funereal. Vanessa also dated Bren five years ago when Bren literally left her at the alter. Hannah and Vanessa meet at the funeral. Vanessa owns a florist shop.
The story had plenty of emotional trauma for Vanessa as she is also tormented by her childhood and her horrific mother. She’s trying to recover but continues to struggle. So even though Hannah and Vanessa like each other they continue to get into arguments and hurt each other. The side characters enhanced the story.
I liked this book especially because both women were strong mature characters, both were 50 years old. I also enjoyed the business aspects of the book. Erdell did a great job writing this story, I couldn’t put it down. Erdell is a proven winner for me. I’ve read all of her books.
Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
What a beautiful Tapestry of a story that Alaina has written. Five years ago Bren left Vanessa at the alter and she hasn't heard from her since. Today Hannah is going to break up with Bren, but when she gets home is informed by police that Bren died in an auto accident. Vanessa is a florist and is commissioned to do a flower arrangement for Bren's funeral. She decides to go to it. After the funeral, Hannah notices Vanessa and the two women talk, they strike up a kinship. They find out that Bren had a secret, and go to explore it. This is a beautiful and complex love story. A FAVORITE! Worthy of more than 5 stars!!
This author does not walk a well worn path. Maybe you’ve read another book where the ex’s of the same person get together romantically. But I still say that this particular story is going to strike a discordant chord that is unlike any similar books.
Vanessa dated Bren years ago. Hannah is engaged to Bren in the present until Bren is tragically killed. They meet at the funeral. After that shock, all bets are off as to how their relationship develops from acquaintanceship to love. It’s even more complicated because both of them are struggling with heavy pasts and being set in their middle aged ways. Angsty, steamy, and unpredictable. Excellent writing. Don’t start reading if you’re looking for a same old same old tale.
Alaina Erdell’s Flowers and Gemstones is a beautifully layered sapphic romance that blends grief, second chances, and self-discovery into a compelling, emotional read. With complex characters, unexpected connections, and a journey of healing, this book keeps you invested from start to finish.
Hannah and Vanessa’s love story is anything but simple. Both women are shaped by past heartbreak—Hannah by her emotionally distant nature and Vanessa by wounds that never fully healed from her relationship with Bren. When Bren’s sudden death unearths secrets neither of them saw coming, their lives become tangled in ways they never expected. The slow unraveling of those mysteries, paired with their undeniable chemistry, makes for a gripping, if at times frustrating, journey. There are moments where you just want to lock them in a room and force them to communicate, but their struggles make the payoff all the more rewarding.
Erdell does a fantastic job balancing the heavier themes of grief, betrayal, and self-worth with moments of levity and warmth. The side characters add richness to the story—Zara, in particular, is a standout, and I’m hoping for a future book featuring her! And let’s talk about the romance: swoon-worthy in all the right places, yet refreshingly realistic. Special applause for the intimate scenes, which feel raw and genuine rather than over-the-top cinematic moments.
While some of the emotional missteps between Hannah and Vanessa can be frustrating, Flowers and Gemstones ultimately delivers a deeply satisfying read. Erdell crafts a love story that is complex, messy, and ultimately worth the journey.
4.5⭐️The book's blurb immediately drew me in. Meeting her ex at the funeral of her dead partner was a truly original beginning. Hannah and Vanessa first come together to get answers about Bren, and during their bumpy journey, they are forced to face not only Bren's secretive past but also their own ghosts. I liked the dynamic between the initially closed-off Vanessa and the refreshing Hannah. Even though the characters don't take long to acknowledge their attraction, I consider their love story a slow burn in terms of its development. I felt I witnessed Vanessa and Hannah's personal journeys toward blossoming, planting the roots of their loving relationship. The characters are layered and well-developed. The book is well balanced between swoon-worthy scenes (to soothe you) and dramatic ones (to frustrate you). I also want to applaude authors like Erdell that write vulnerable sex scenes where characters don’t orgasm like fireworks on the 4th July. Building the book in three parts didn't feel necessary, as I couldn't especially distinguish them (particularly parts one and two). I also wished that the key moment that made Hannah change life was more impactful. But overall, I really enjoyed the book, the pace, and the writing. I still have to read *All Things Beautiful*, but this is Erdell's best work so far.
4.7/5 - Highly addictive read. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that both women were in their late 40s, going into their 50s. The steamy scenes were really well-written and the angst-level was moderate, but never dove into being annoying and unnecessary.
Trigger warning: There is pretty heavy verbal abuse from a parent to one of the MCs throughout, but it all factors into the story and that particular MC's personal growth.
Overall, very unique plot setup and I really enjoyed this book! I especially love that there wasn't the normal trope of an age-gap, ice queen, enemies-to-lovers, etc of a queer book.
This is the second novel by Alaina Erdell that I have read, and I am pleased to say that I really love her style and her way of writing stories that are a bit different than usual ones, especially in terms of how the characters relate to each other. Erdell has a way to make them feel more human and realistic in all their reactions, even the unpleasant ones.
What I liked the most about Flowers and Gemstones is how one life can have such an impact on other people's life, how one event can shape your life taking you to path you had never thought you had the courage to take.
We are but a result of our past and how we were raised. The coping mechanism we all have developed through our youth are what shapes us as adults. But we can always decide to become a better version of ourselves, not for the others, but for our own sake.
But when you find "the one" that makes you a better person, and ease all your pain from the past, two is always better than one.
I loved the roadtrip, the chemistry, the mature women discussing their needs, the insight on all botanic stuff and the care given to explain how emotional abuse can shape a mind in believing they are not worthy of anything.
Severing ties with a family member, because of their toxicity is not easy. I know all about it.
I am so glad Hannah and Vanessa found each other. They are incredible cute together and caring.
This has been a rather strange story, as it begins with a funeral where the partner of one of the protagonists, Hannah, has just died. At the cemetery appears Vanessa, a woman unknown to Hannah, and turns out to be a former partner of the deceased.
And more strange things, Hannah was going to break up with the late partner on the day of the accident in which she died, which implies that their relationship was not good, so her death is not affecting her as much as expected.
But Vanessa's presence at the funeral, and the things Hannah didn't know about her partner that she discovers while collecting his belongings at work and in their own home, spark Hannah's curiosity and also suspicions that her partner was leading a double life. This leads her, with Vanessa's collaboration (though Vanessa is not very convinced at first), to find out what was causing him to travel so frequently if it wasn't for work.
This that seems so complicated, in the end is nothing more than a sad story of lack of acceptance of sexuality that turns into living a life of deceit and lies, that when they affect other people can cause a lot of emotional damage. Fortunately, here the trauma is overcome with a new mature relationship without deceit.
Bold Strokes Books was kind enough to send me a copy via Netgalley for an honest review
I really enjoyed this. Older protagonists (although as a forty-two-year-old, it pains me to call late forties people "old"), lots of past trauma to work through, and a unique connection (they both dated the same woman, who suddenly died in an accident). I appreciate that the two women have their own issues and work on them in this book to be better partners to each other instead of just rushing into an unrealistic happily ever after without sorting through the issues that they each acknowledge are harmful in their own lives. Would recommend!
A beautiful, sensitive story of finding that special connection with someone when life has made you weary. Heads up: This story contains parental psychological abuse, which may be triggering for some readers.
I received an advance copy from Netgalley for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Hannah Barros’ life is turned upside down when her girlfriend Bren suddenly dies in a car accident. Girlfriend is a loose term because their relationship hadn’t been perfect to say the least. At the graveyard saying her final goodbye, Hannah notices a woman across the grave. Vanessa turns out to be Bren’s ex. Hannah can’t help but be intrigued. What can this beautiful woman tell her about Bren and the mysteries surrounding her life?
I love reading stories about women in their forties or older. They have a lot of life experience to draw from. It brings a whole other dimension compared to all those books about young women dealing with first loves, heartbreaks, jobs etc. As a 40+ reader it makes my heart happy to see these protagonists live full lives, learn from their pasts and love fiercely.
The secrets Bren was hiding kickstart the work both Vanessa and Hannah need to do personally.
Vanessa’s mom is, next to the ghost of Bren, the proverbial villain of the story. She treats her own daughter so badly it made my skin crawl. A truly horrible person and Vanessa deserves so much more than that. I’m in awe of the person Vanessa has become despite having been put down by the one person that was supposed to love her unconditionally. Throughout the whole story she works really hard to let go of her demons and it’s really powerful that she claims the space to do that on her own terms.
Hannah has some growing to do as well. Being the ultimate workaholic, she needs to work on finding a better work-life balance. It’s one of the issues that caused problems in previous relationships. Hannah thinks she can only do no strings, but somehow she started spinning a thread towards Vanessa right from the beginning. She is enchanted by this gorgeous and intriguing woman, so who is she kidding?!
Erdell successfully turns up the heat quite a few notches once the initial connection between Hannah and Vanessa is secured. And let me tell you, those sparks could start a forest fire, so hot!
Alaina Erdell proves, once again, that she is a unique voice within the sapphic genre. Flowers and Gemstones is beautifully written, treats sensitive objects with care and leaves a lingering imprint. I really, really enjoyed it!
Before you begin Alaina Erdell’s newest book, Flowers, and Gemstones, heed my advice and have a box of tissues handy. Seriously, this novel is a beautifully woven tapestry of heartache, betrayal, secrets, and love.
Picture this: three women whose lives collide, all because of the lies and secrets of a fourth woman and a tragic event. When we meet Vanessa and Hannah, the two main characters, they each have enough baggage and regret to fill a U-Haul. Vanessa carries the weight of a secret that eats away at her. And Hannah, the woman who, five years earlier, was left at the altar, is just trying to pick up the pieces and get on with her life.
The twist? These two women meet at a funeral, but not just any funeral. Brenn, the deceased, is the woman who left Hannah at the altar; and is Vanessa’s current girlfriend, whom Vanessa was planning to break up with the day she died. To make the story even more complicated, the two discover Brenn was involved with a third woman the whole time she was involved with them.
Erdell does an incredible job peeling back the layers of these four women’s lives, and even though Brenn was a cereal cheater, and her actions deeply traumatized Hannah, once you understand why she cheated, you might not forgive her, but maybe you can empathize and cut her some slack.
What makes Flowers and Gemstones so special, in my opinion, is Erdell’s gift for creating characters. You laugh with them, you cry with them, and sometimes you shake your head at the choices they make (Hannah, I’m pointing at you).
In short, if you’re a fan of multilayered romances that dig deep into the complexities of love, loss, and the damage secrets can wield, then Flowers and Gemstones is a must-read. You’ll find yourself lost in the intricacies of these four women’s lives, and if you’re like me, you won’t be able to put it down. Warning: when you finish, you’ll have to deal with the resulting book hangover … but you’ll thank Erdell for it.

Alaina Erdell has quickly become one of those authors whose releases I always keep an eye out for. I love her eye for detail and how most of her main characters have professions that clearly require extensive knowledge and research to write about competently.
Flowers and Gemstones begins with the death of Bren, Hannah’s girlfriend, just before Hannah planned to break up with her. At Bren’s funeral, Hannah meets Bren’s ex, Venessa, leading to an unexpected connection.
When Hannah asks Venessa to accompany her on a road trip, at first, Venessa is hesitant. But unanswered questions from her past relationship with Bren still haunt her, and spending time with Hannah is nice.
Along the way, secrets are revealed, and true feelings come to light. As both women navigate past and present emotions, workplace expectations, and their own deeply rooted fears, they are forced to confront what they truly want.
Erdell’s writing is smooth and well-rounded. There is an air of mystery surrounding the characters, with a storyline that is original and fresh. It’s impossible not to connect with Hannah and Venessa, and I even found myself longing to know Bren’s whole story.
Even with quite a heavy theme, Flowers and Gemstones is a sweet, layered love story that isn’t one you should miss.

This book really starts with a bang. All drama from the very beginning. There's a sudden death and a first encounter between MC's Hannah and Vanessa in a cemetery. Then they get to know each other during a road trip to visit a woman with whom their mutual ex may have had an affair. It's not easy at all and quite complicated. Especially considering the history of both Vanessa and Hannah. The shared deceased ex slowly fades into the background, but the relationship between Hannah and Vanessa remains complex. Nevertheless, they're nice characters in a good story. Although I did feel incredibly sorry for Vanessa. It's terrible how damaged she was by her mother's actions. As I write this, I realize that we don't really get much information about Hannah's background. That didn't really bother me though. It was a good read. 4.5⭐️
What a start. Really keen to find out more! Pacing perfect. Although there was a fair bit of to-ing and fro-ing with the romance, my interest was held pretty solidly throughout. 3.5 almost up to 4.
Hannah’s girlfriend, Bren, dies in an unexpected accident and everyone expects her to be upset, but Hannah had been planning to break up with Bren to focus on launching her family jewelry business to new heights. Bren’s ex, Vanessa learns about her passing when her flower shop is hired to do the flowers for the funeral, and when she turns up at the funeral she meets Hannah. They quickly discover Bren had secrets neither of them knew about during their relationships, and in a bid to try and get closure for both of them, they are drawn together.
This was an unexpected romance, blooming from a completely unexpected situation, but I loved it. There were complete opposites in how Hannah hadn’t really been the girlfriend she thought Bren deserved because of her career focused mind set, and Vanessa had been left broken hearted and hadn’t forgiven Bren for dumping her, but when they learned about each other and Bren’s secrets it left them both with the same questions. I adored how despite being so headstrong, Bren’s death somewhat derailed Hannah and had her needing Vanessa for support throughout everything.
They both did a lot of growing throughout the story, more so Hannah as she realised there could be more to life and she could find joy in things outside of her career and the family business. Vanessa learned to be more forgiving, especially when Hannah was leading by example when their investigations took them on quite the adventure to learn the truth about all Bren had expertly hid from them both. The nice thing is it gave them both a chance to learn from their relationships with Bren, which ultimately was the one thing bringing them together. Vanessa was definitely pushed emotionally, both with all she was holding onto about how Bren had made her feel, but also with her own elderly mother really challenging her as she tried to find a sense of happiness with Hannah. My heart just kept breaking for her, but I loved how Hannah stepped up to be a good support, in the way Vanessa had selflessly done for her very early on after they met.
A cute romance, with a lot of depth and emotion, things to unpack and analyse, and lots of takeaways and lessons to learn about forgiveness, being aware in relationships, and taking chances. I loved it and thought it had beautiful sentiments.
This was such an amazing mature love story about two mature women. This is a must read during 2025!
The start of the book is so different with Hannah planning to finally break up with her secretive and distant girlfriend Bren, the same day she finds out she has died in an accident. Moving on from that is challenging, but she finds Bren's ex Vanessa that also has a lot of baggage, and they can work on understanding themselves and Bren’s story together. The growth to get to their HEA is so angsty and complex, but fantastic to read about and no stupid misunderstanding and 3rd act breakups. It is so much more; the attraction is there but they need to change to finally find the love they deserve, 2>1.

This book drew me in and kept me enthralled from the start! An excellent read.
Hannah and Vanessa meet after the tragic loss of Hannah’s girlfriend, Bren, who is also Vanessa’s ex. Vanessa still hasn’t recovered fully from their break up. As the two get to know each other they find they have more in common than they realized and neither may have really known Bren.
Together they embark on a journey to find answers so they can heal and move on with their lives. The truth may be more painful than either of them expected. Will they be able to move on and grow their connection or will their common past with Bren interfere?
I really enjoyed this story and will be reading more from this author. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book
hannah isnt happy.... she hasnt been for a while... so she had written down all the reasons why it was a good idea to break up with her partner bren....
what she hadnt anticipated was the police at her home with the news of bren being in an accident and had died....
what followed after was an eye opener for hannah when she went to pick up bren things from work.... and found out that brens who life with her was a lie....
but more was to come.....
wow i have to say i hadnt expected half of what happened to happen...its compelling reading and one that will have you wondering what will happen next.... its a great read... and the spicy scenes are to die for
Chapter one... BAM. That's it. This romance begins with a powerful end, which is also the start of an unlikely friendship. Are you dizzy yet? Strap in! The main character, Hannah is in for a ride, emotionally and physically as her present collides with her partner's unimaginable past. Carrying the guilt of an unfinished relationship, she sets out on a journey to answer questions about herself and the people her ex left behind. It's the book you want to gobble to get to the answers, but also the book you hate to see end. This will definitely be a favorite to revisit. Bravo, Alaina Erdell! Five stars, again.
Flowers and Gemstones, the newest novel by Alaina Erdell is absolutely fantastic. It is a beautiful love story between two women in their mid-late 40s, something that is not represented enough, in my opinion, in sapphic romance. Erdell writes complicated and complex characters who are not perfect but who want to be better people. This was not a story that went right from A to B to happily ever after. There was a whole alphabet going on there. What a lovely book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ms Erdell writes entertaining, rich stories that enhances the romance. I find that unlike most contemporary novels, she takes the time for worldbuilding, drawing the reader into the projects/career which the MCs are passionate about. Case in point, I live in the country where orchids are renowned and am ashamed to say I've never visited the gardens but will do so soon! Lol.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Hannah wants break up with her girlfriend Bren but before she has a chance she dies. Hannah feels guilt for not feeling heartbroken over Bren death when she meets Bren ex Vanessa who never really gotten over how they ended. Vanessa learns of Bren death and meets Hannah at Bren funeral when Hannah ask Vanessa to help her figure out who Bren is things comes to light. I enjoy this read Hannah who sees Vanessa but fears she’ll hurt her because she doesn’t do well in relationship and Vanessa who realizes her worth and stands up for herself especially with her mother who was wow I would’ve turn my back on her or at least hire someone to deal with her.
This book! Oh my goodness. So many emotions while reading this story. First of all - I absolutely LOVE Hannah and Vanessa together. The florist and the jeweler. The two of them were so good together, far better than either of them ever was with Bren (who I liked less and less the farther I got into the story). I did get very frustrated with them at times because I wanted them to just get it together and communicate and BE together. But I also love how they navigated some rather turbulent times together. That even when one tried to push the other away, they tried to find a balance. To give space without giving up. To respect boundaries while not just letting the other run away because things got hard or messy. It was actually really beautiful to see. Yes, there was some miscommunication and things didn’t have to get quite as messy as they did. BUT they could have been a heck of a lot worse too!
Aside from Bren and Vanessa’s mom, the side characters were truly wonderful and added a lot to the story - like Zara and Sonja and all the youth from the garden. I just love all the parts of the story around the garden especially. So much that I wish I could be a part of it with them, working with those kids and making a difference. Such a wholesome and beautiful part of the story.
And yay for the All Things Beautiful Easter egg! 😁
I love how well fleshed out the characters are - you can tell that Alaina puts a lot of time and research into these characters and their professions. Her writing is beautiful and she is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I will read anything she puts out there! Her stories are filled with heart and humor and complex, messy, flawed characters that will stick with you.
📝Tropes/Themes: Road Trip, Strangers to Friends to Lovers, Grief/Loss, Starting Over, Family Relationships, Betrayal/Cheating, Femme/Femme, One Night to Forever, Gardening, 40+ leads
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books. This is my honest review.
⚠️TW/CW: mentions of death, themes of grief and loss, addiction/alcoholism (SC), abusive/manipulative relationship with parent, infidelity (not by MCs), mention of parental abandonment, brief mention of incest by SC
The characters were well crafted with relatable and real problems. It was fun to watch them grow together as well as work on their own issues. The setting of the PNW was written perfectly and I enjoy reading about women over 40 finding love.
