Chaos Agent

Rate this book
What happens when the sweetest employee learns her boss’s evil secrets? This opposites-attract ice queen romance asks: Can a villain truly be redeemed?

CEO Michelle Hastings has foolishly promoted a kind, clueless activist to her full-time staff. Now, on top of fighting her inconvenient feelings, Michelle must hide the evil they do.

Eden Lawless relishes her new job, the hot boss who gives her butterflies, and her eccentric workmates who tell weird jokes about their day. Blackmail? Hacking? Doxing? Hilarious! But what if it’s not a joke? Would that mean Eden has to fight the boss she’s falling for?

Chaos Agent, the last book in The Villains Series, is a lesbian romance filled with intrigue, humor, hurt, and heart. It’s set in The Red Files universe but can be read as a standalone series.

**'It's good when a writer surround their main protagonist with tolerant secondary characters. This then helps the narrative to appear more authentic...'

Good read!
A much better book #2 now that their budding friendship developed into this nice romance with some good dialogue.
Recommended book #2 and series!

This is genius writing and storytelling! I had the sense while reading it that Winter was right in her sweet spot with this one. She excels at stories like this - with twists and turns, where highly intelligent characters have to cleverly maneuver around obstacles to reach their end goal. A little mystery, some intrigue, a few surprises, memorable secondary characters, and just the right amount of humor. While it may or may not be the case, it reads like it was a hell of a lot of fun for her to write because she got to flex all her creative muscles with this one.

Eden Lawless is a wonderfully sweet, good character without being a caricature. Most similar to Summer Hayes in Winter's repertoire, she's just so damn likable she can't help but win everyone over. A real contrast to icy, aloof Michelle Hastings whose walls are so high you'd need a helicopter to get over them. Winter said she set out to redeem Hastings in this book and she definitely had her work cut out for her. But she obviously knew in order to accomplish that she'd have to take her time and allow Hastings to grow, reflect and finally come to terms with her past. So yes, this is a slowwww burn and the unfolding of it is delicious. It wouldn't have been successful any other way.

Experiencing these books felt like a real full circle moment - going back to the story that started it all for her - The Red Files. For me, this is Winter's best work since Requiem for Immortals, which has long been my favorite sapphic fiction book of all time. Yes - it's that good. She has certainly solidified her lesbian writing god status with this one.

The audiobook version is superb. Plain and simple. Especially Chaos Agent, the strongest of the two books. Narrator Angela Dawe - whose work on the audio of the Sliced Ice short stories that inspired this duology - outdid herself. As much as I enjoyed the written version (it was one of the best sapphic releases of 2023 in my view) this surpassed it. All due to her outstanding narration. She brought these characters to life in a way no one else would have been able to do. She's not called legendary for nothing. If you haven't read or listened to these yet, I urge you to do so. Terrific.

Chaos Agent picks up where The Fixer left off as activist Eden Lawless begins her new job with Michelle Hastings. Michelle has her hands full trying to keep Eden in the dark about the true nature of the company she runs. Eden, meanwhile, is making friends in every department of the corporation much to Michelle’s chagrin. But lies cannot stay hidden forever.

This is a wild ride of a story that holds you in the constant state of what will happen next as you frantically turn the pages. Winter orchestrates the multiple storylines like the virtuoso she is. And she will not be rushed to completion. The redemption of a villain is an evolution of self discovery and a loved one constantly holding up a mirror to the truth behind their actions. This is the sweet perfection of the novel.

Michelle, unravelled.

I mentioned in my review of The Fixer that Michelle Hastings was an intriguing and sexy character. I continue to find her intriguing and sexy in this book and as more of her past is revealed, I felt sorry and sad for her. I think Lee Winter got it right that Michelle needs two books. She's slow to warm up to the idea of trusting someone else with her feelings and she has so much guilt bottled up in her that she needs time to heal. I really love how much more intimately we know her in this book compared to the earlier book, how much she opens up to Eden and how she makes amends.

Eden is Michelle's love interest and also her staff at The Fixers and through her, we get an insider view of this secret organisation we've all heard about and the people in it, who are interesting to get to know. Eden, with her upbeat and cheerful personality, is a refreshing character to be around Michelle and The Fixers staff for sure, but I want to be honest and also say that I thought her panda-like innocence became a bit tiresome after a while.

That being said, I think Eden is a good match for Michelle and her opposite personality is good for her. I also enjoyed their interactions even when they weren't seeing eye to eye at some point, and although I totally understand why Michelle's relationship with Eden had to develop so slowly emotionally, I wished they could at least have more physical intimacy earlier in the book.

Winter is a brilliant author, one who creates memorable ice queens, and she's done it again.

Heart pounding, Eden swallowed hard and whispered, “I didn’t know where else to go.”
Fury and venom dripped from Michelle’s voice as she leaned right in and demanded: “Who did this to you.”

Sorry for the *ahem* week long delay in writing this review: I was left in slight shock. This was so good that it made me want to lower my rating on the first book just because this one surpassed it so much. This book was everything I was craving after having finished the first. Here we got romantic development, action, hurt/comfort, drama and . This book packed such a punch that I was left dazed and empty upon finishing it.

I'm not even sure how Winter did it but it felt like both Eden and Michelle's personalities had been even more fleshed out: so many cute, defining moments for each of them. Always indicative of their personality. There was so much angst here, I was practically drooling.

Seeing Michelle was such a delight. I really felt like I knew her so well by the end of the book. Seeing someone so cold and typically apathetic warm and long for someone was just UGH - it's everything. It's what I love about romance, actually. When and Michelle became desperate while everything crumbled around her 😋😋😋 now THAT was a treat. That's the type of obsession I'm looking for - Eden literally turned Michelle's world on its axis and I devoured it.

And the side characters? Gah, I feel stupid for trying to articulate my feeling because I literally cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this one.

Don't worry, I'll add in some quotes tomorrow because I'm too tired rn. BYE!

Thank you Netgalley and YLVA for a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“Chaos Agent” by Lee Winter is book two in the Villains series and picks up right after “The Fixer” ends. I definitely recommend reading “The Fixer” first or this one won’t mean as much to you and you’ll miss a few things that get mentioned.

This book slows down a bit and really concentrates on Michelle and Eden and their character development. I loved the process each one goes through once Eden realizes that the Fixers isn’t a group of do-gooders., but rather the henchmen of the highest bidder. This is also darker than the previous book as it delves into the how’s and why’s of Michelle’s character, which isn’t pretty.

It was interesting to me because Michelle has a reputation (in the land of Winter’s fans and readers) of being a villain. However, while reading this I came to the conclusion that though she is morally gray and has some questionable ethics, she’s really only a villain to Catherine Ayers. Speaking of, I absolutely loved the scene between Michelle, Eden, Catherine and Lauren. It truly made me so happy as a Catherine Ayers fan.

The relationship between Michelle and Eden was surprisingly sweet. I didn’t think it that would be a word to describe them but it’s what I came up with. Eden is naïve and she loses some of that here. I’ll admit that while reading “The Fixers” I wasn’t sure I would really want the two of them to be together, but by the end I was a fan. Also, if Eden got on your nerves previously, she loses a lot of that and is much more palatable this go round.

While I am giving this five stars, I want to point out some of the things that could bother others. Some people may feel this drags out and while I don’t disagree, I still enjoyed my time of getting more background so it didn’t bother me. I also was completely disappointed with Eden’s mom. I expected her to be a certain way because of how she’s described and her scene just didn’t really jive with that.

Like I said, I didn’t let those things bother me and really loved this little series. If you like interesting storylines with your romances I recommend starting with “The Red Files” and go from there.

In my review on the first book in the series here, I already commented on how wonderful this series is and how I liked different aspects of both books. Of the two books, this one had a slightly higher entertainment and enjoyment factor for me, but they were both fantastic reads.

This book is set at the organization The Fixers, which has a questionable reputation when considering ethical aspects, or in Eden’s words: “it’s an evil organization”. But Eden is not aware of this fact at the start of the book and that is what made this book start with a bang for me. It was so funny to see Eden interact with everybody in the company. Where I thought Eden a bit one dimensional and naïve in the first book, it totally worked in this setting and she really came to life. Still, Michelle’s redemption arc steals the show, it was such an emotional rollercoaster. The book has some slow parts, it’s a very very slow burn overall, but it works the way Winter takes the time to turn Michelle into the person she wants to be, instead of the person (she thinks) she needs to be.

I’m not going to say anything about the storyline because of spoilers, but I would like to comment on the added secondary characters in this book. I already loved Michelle’s safta in the first book, but here we also get an Irish bruiser with a secretly very soft heart, which gave the story some extra flavor.

After reading the “On The Record Series” and the “The Villains” series back-to-back I think I’m now going into a huge book hangover. So, for those that also want a book hangover, you know what to do.

Second read is audio with the excellent Angela Dawes.
This 5++++ and Winter is a genius. Can’t wait for the new book.

4.5⭐️Rounded up.

I just read 4 Lee Winter books back to back and I’m definitely enjoying my Winter book hangover. :)

This story is the second book in the Villain series and you need to read the Fixer first. Chaos Agent picks up immediately where the Fixer left off. Chaos Agent focuses on Eden Lawlesss being offered a job with the Fixers Organization. This happens because Michelle Hastings is enamored with Eden’s personality. Eden is a shining star in Hastings horrible life and she can’t get enough of her. Hastings has committed one of the worst acts that any person can do to someone they love- betray them!
In this story we learn why Michelle did what she did and how much she is suffering from it mentally and physically.

Hastings is super protective of Eden and that was one of my favorite parts of the book.

The side characters are very well developed and add a great deal of depth to the story. My favs were Michelle’s grandmother and her Irish enforcer.

Eden learns that the world isn’t black and white and that there is some grey in most people and that’s ok.

The beginning of this book was hilarious and I found my self laughing out loud at the chaos Eden causes. Winter brings so much to this series humor, despair, love and a little bit of mystery.

I highly recommend this series to all of Winters fans.

This is the second book of The Villain Series and you have to read the first book (The Fixer) before you read Chaos Agent.

Chaos Agent picks up right where The Fixer left off. Where I enjoyed the banter and the general back and forth in The Fixer I enjoyed it much less in this one. Somehow this book feels very drawn out, forced maybe. I know the author needed time to unravel the “villain” and warm the ice queen up, but I just can’t escape the feeling that in both books some things could have been cut and this series could have been one longer book than is the usual for sapphic books.
Don’t get me wrong, Winter is an amazing writer, my standards for her writing are probably much higher than for many other authors, but this just falls a little flat.

The first 20% of the book is fun, the next 60% is just a bit meh for me, and the last 20% is amazing again. When Winter’s writing is amazing you just want more, when it’s meh, it’s meh. There isn’t enough chaos in this book, the good kind, the one I was expecting Eden to stir up. The feel of this book is just different than The Fixer, I guess it’s more emotional, more on the character development side of things, but that just moves rather slowly and is kinda repetitive. As said in my review of The Fixer, Michelle never was a real villain to me, and the focus on her being so evil in this book felt a little childish. This book felt more childish, I think that’s it.
Even with the more emotional sides and the character development.
As the acknowledgment suggested I was waiting for more of a big bang in certain things, but it was just very careful. Or maybe I just chapter after chapter…

Anyway, this is an extremely long way of saying; I liked it, but didn’t love it. For a Winter book and after just finishing The Fixer I had higher/ different expectations (that’s on me).

3.5 stars

I absolutely adore Lee Winter. I really really enjoyed reading this series. I fell in love with the characters, the story, and her genius writing. I can only hope if there’s no more books to this series, that she releases many more books in the future. If you’re thinking of reading this book please do!!!! And if you’ve read it, I really hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have! :)

WOW! Chaos Agent was beyond terrific! It is now my second favorite Lee Winter book, next only to The Brutal Truth. Although all her books are excellent, this one was simply exceptional. I was really blown away, and I found myself loving the book before I even finished it.

Lee gave herself a difficult task - redeeming a woman who seemed like she was beyond saving - and yet she still made it work somehow. The story was tight and well-thought-out. There were clever twists and references to her previous stories, but she was able to tie everything together. I’m sure Lee spent a lot of time making sure the ties worked, and it has definitely paid off. Chaos Agent was engaging from start to end. The pacing was great - I sacrificed some sleep because I just couldn’t stop reading!

It was great to witness Michelle’s tedious road to healing. Nothing can justify her actions, but at least we get a sense of understanding. The emotions were so raw and beautifully written. Also, there seems to be an overarching theme of acceptance - of our past, our decisions, our mistakes, and just all out flaws and imperfections.

Lee had told us such a brilliant story, one of the best she has written. Will definitely be singing praises for this one!

And the sequel to The Fixers is this chaotic agent who is continually hired into the secret organization that helped her unmask her biggest enemy, now former mayor, Francine.

Eden brings chaos to the organization, not just with her naive mindset that doesn't seem to realize the real background of the company she's come to work for. Michelle doesn't seem to know quite what to do with Eden either, keep her in the dark? Or let her continue messing with the entire company, starting with the simple fact of organizing post-work day talks to choose the best type of ecological and sustainable coffee that should be used in the office coffee machine that nobody uses because it belongs to the CEO. and no one has dared to ask if it can be used by the rest of the staff. Hilarious.

So Eden meets the thugs, spies, hackers and others, who are in charge of intimidating and tearing down the targets of the orders that arrive at the company. Never illegally, always on the verge of it.

And everything seems to be going more or less well, until Eden discovers, in an apparently accidental way, the true nature of the work that the company does. And then the chaos does begin, because she uses this information to end the company and the company in turn wants to punish her, not too fiercely, but in an annoying way.

From then on, new factors appear that will greatly influence the outcome, starting with the former mayor Francine and her henchmen, Senator Kensington and none other than Catherine Ayers and Lauren King! The Red Files and Under Your Skin. And some other events that have been crucial in the final outcome.

Although the end has been a bit slow compared to the pace of the rest of the novel, as a whole and together with the previous part it has been really interesting and entertaining.

But you must read the novels in their order: The Fixer first, then this one.

I’m absolutely FERAL over this book. God, I love Michelle SO MUCH. What a crush-worthy woman. Morally grey and stern with a vulnerable, tender heart underneath?? *swoons* Is it weird to say…I’d pay to let her fire me?

The plot was fun, of course — Lee winter always delivers a great plot with some cool twists. Plus there were plenty of interesting side characters to fill out the story. But obviously, I was here for that sweet, sweet, romance, and boy did it deliver!!

This was a TORTUROUS slow burn and I absolutely fucking loved it. I was hanging onto every small, tender moment between Eden and Michelle, dyyyyying for them to finally combust! And when they finally did…oh my lord. It was sooo beautiful to see Michelle finally trust Eden with her heart. 🥹🥹🥹 And that love declaration *melts into a puddle*

Additionally, Lee Winter gave me what are probably my new favorite hurt/comfort scenes ever. 😭😭😭😍😍😍 I feel a little weird saying this because obviously, Eden’s attack was beyond horrible. But…Michelle being sent into a protective rage absolutely annihilated me in the best way. And the fact that Eden just *knew* Michelle would help her was so freaking sweet. I love how Eden was able to see past the facade to the real woman underneath. These two are soulmate material!

I also enjoyed the appearances of Catherine Ayers and Lauren King, plus the tiny nod to Requiem for Immortals! Gosh, I need to reread those books…

So yeah. This is my new favorite Lee Winter book/couple. They’re up with legends like EJ Noyes’ Sabine and Rebecca and Haley Cass’s Riley and Gianna. 😍🥹🥰

I seem to really be in the minority here, but I didn’t love this duology all that much. I’d probably rate this in the 2.75 enjoyment levels, which is a real bummer for me.

Lee Winter’s On the Red Files were the first adult sapphic romance books I ever read, so I hold a LOT of fondness for them and I’ve enjoyed basically all of her other books…. except for the most recent ones. Usually, I love both her protagonists, but I didn’t really enjoy Felicity’s romance (despite loving Felicity herself) and I just never warmed up to Eden in this duology. I found her really grating and a bit insufferable. I think that colored the rest of my feelings about the story, but it also felt really like I was disconnected from the story as a whole. I kept feeling like the dialogue felt off, many of the side characters and their interactions also irritated me somehow, things seemed rushed, and glossed over, and yet also drawn out? Idk, I really never got into either book much. And it is SUCH a disappointment and bummer, bc I used to love her books and everyone else seems to have had a great time with this one. Alas, I did not. Here’s hoping I enjoy the next one more.

Gosh, this duology packed a punch. I'm sad to see this series end!

I loved The Fixer and thankfully I loved Chaos Agent too. Both books weave a world that completely drew me in. In Chaos Agent, Eden's goodness and Michelle's past collide in a way that was so completely captivating. I was enthralled throughout.

I'm trying to keep this vague to mitigate spoilers so I'll leave this review short and sweet. If you have any doubts of reading this series, forget them. This is completely well worth the hype!

How do you know mastery at its finest? When an author writes a character that everyone absolutely loathes, yet somehow in the middle of her story, you fall in love with said character.

Never in a million years did I think I would end up even semi-liking Michelle Hastings, but Lee Winter proved me wrong time and time again throughout The Fixer, and absolutely in Chaos Agent. The layers of Michelle that we got insight into were so perfectly written and completely heartbreaking. I spent my workday waiting to get home so I could continue reading this book and didn’t stop until I literally could not keep my eyes open.

It is not your traditional romance novel which is clear going in, but the chemistry and sparks between Michelle and Eden were undeniable. I would consider this a slow burn on steroids, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. The slow burn was needed for the audience to understand Michelle and then learn all about Eden and how she somehow, someway peeled Michelle’s layers away. And the coming full circle ending, it could not have been better. Even after two books, I would love to continue reading their story. It was that damn good.

Many thanks to Ylva Publishing for providing me an arc for an honest review. Now I’m off to book hangover land for a while.

The subterfuge on Michelle's part continues but for how long? Sooner or later the veil over Eden's eyes will fall and The Fixers true purpose be exposed.
I liked the Michelle that was slowly revealed - her edges softening as her scarred past is disclosed. It is easy to root for Eden. Her activism and when she believes there is good in everyone (even if it seems too naive at times). Then everything quietly implodes.
Winter's twists and turns in the plot were brilliant. I wanted justice to win out. The slow romance was somewhat frustrating but oddly worked - the Fixer and the activist finally recognizing they really were better together. What a wonderful redemption for a cold character to forgive herself and accept love.
Fantastic writing. I'm looking forward to whatever the author comes up with next. Highly recommend without reservation. This duology is on my "favorite shelf"

Although The Villians series is standalone, I strongly suggest you read the "On The Record" series first, then the short story "First-Class Villains" from Sliced Ice. These will give you a glimpse of Michelle Hastings, plus the On The Record series was so good to read. I was so excited when I learned there would be a book about Michelle. She was a fascinating character(however evil she seems in the On The Record series) with so much potential. And well, Lee Winter never failed us!

Now that I have finished the series. The Fixer seems more like a prologue; then Chaos Agent kicks off the show. Both of them are brilliant! It revealed the mysterious organization we were looking for from 'On The Record', and we received the disclosure we wanted, as well as Michelle Hastings' redemption. Michelle Hastings is one of the grumpiest and evil(sort of) ice queens I have ever read. She is nothing that I imagined. I thought she would be the worst character and wondered how she would redeem herself. But in the end, I'm so glad Lee built an incredible, charming, and heartbroken character with so much depth for us. And Eden Lawless, probably one of the sunniest and most native characters (in an ethical way) I have ever read. And they are perfect for each other. You cannot not love the delicious opposites-attract, age-gap, grumpy/sunny, and ice queen trope here(and there's so much more!)
Highly recommend. I can not wait for this series' physical book to arrive on my bookshelf.

Brilliant intrigue and emotional wringer
I am writing this in the morning after a short night finishing this stunner of a book: I feel bereft - odd, huh? The Villain-duology (The Fixer, Chaos Agent) is THAT good.
I have already reviewed The Fixer and of course I asked myself: what will Lee Winter come up with in the second and concluding part of the duology. Well, let me say and I rarely do, Chaos Agent is pure unadulterated genius, pure reading gold. It put me through an emotional wringer - I am still reeling!! I was laughing, raging, struck by heart-warming sequences, ready to murder the evil scum, wanting to whisper words of solace, proud of the characters … I had whiplash from all the twists and turns in the story, loved the philosophical nuggets. The pages turned itself well into the night (my partner was grumbling, but how could I stop?).
The Fixer, the first part of the duology, focuses on how campaigner and bleeding-heart activist Eden „fixes“ her evil archnemesis. The polical cesspit of Washington and the machinations of The Fixers and those in power were painted in bold strokes for us readers. Eden started to carry a maybe not so secret torch for her icy boss. Chaos Agent focuses more on both main characters, their relation and final redemption. Hence the emotional rollercoaster. The evil doings of The Fixers and the intrigue though are still very present and important parts of the story. Both books of the Villain series complement each other. Each is unique in its own right, both are stunning and a brilliant testament to Lee Winter‘s superb skills as a writer. Never a dull minute.

Again the warning: Do.Not.Start this book if you can‘t finish this book asap.

PS: This is part two of a duology. If you absolutely must and deprive yourself from spectacular writing and an equally spectacular story arc you can read Chaos Agent as a standalone. For even greater enjoyment you might consider starting with Lee Winter‘s The Red Files followed by Under Your Skin and then start the Villain-duology. No evil marketing plot of mine, just the most enjoyable reading route for discerning gourmet readers.

Thanks to Ylva for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

Chaos Agent picks up where The Fixer leaves off. Eden Lawless is unaware of the real work The Fixers do and Michelle Hastings really doesn't want to tell her. Eden sees good in Michelle, even if Michelle is certain none exists. Michelle likes having a friend who sees her the way she wishes she could be, even if both women are developing feelings that go far beyond friendship.
Michelle Hastings is one of the most intriguing characters in recent memory and only someone with a heart as pure as Eden could break down the walls Michelle has constructed. These two characters are opposites but bring out the best in each other. Michelle gives Eden an edge and Eden helps Michelle recognize her humanity.
The redemption of Michelle is one of the most satisfying reading experiences I have had in a long time. I was enthralled with this series and after reading both books, immediately started reading them again. One of the many things I appreciate about Lee Winter's books is that no words are wasted, every one serves a purpose. She is in a league of her own and I am so grateful she shares her gift with us.

What an amazing story! While I thoroughly enjoyed The Fixer, I loved Chaos Agent even more. Lee Winter has outdone herself with this one.

The slow-burn romance between Michelle and Eden was perfectly executed, and their dynamic kept me hooked from start to finish. I really enjoyed how their relationship developed with so much tension and so many twists - especially considering Michelle’s complex, “villainous” character. Eden’s innocence and kindness balanced Michelle’s cold professionalism in such an engaging way.

The secondary characters were fantastic as well - O'Brian and Hannah brought so much to the story. The twists and turns of the storyline were unpredictable and kept me on the edge of my seat, especially as the final reveal unfolded.

As much as I love all of Lee Winter’s books, I’d say Chaos Agent is definitely one of my favorites. Michelle has to be one of the most fascinating characters I’ve read about—so layered, flawed, and ultimately compelling.

Audiobook review:
The audiobook version of this story was excellent! Angela Dawe’s narration was outstanding. I’m in awe of how well she captured Michelle’s icy, commanding tone while still making her character feel relatable and human. A very enjoyable audiobook!

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: January 2024

My thoughts on Angela Dawe's narration of 'Agent Chaos,' which I consider Lee Winter's best literary piece to date: it is absolute perfection — and to be honest, I expected nothing less from the Lee Winter-Angela Dawe duo.

I'm currently listening to it again, and I can't help but highlight Dawe's exceptional performance as Catherine Ayers in this book. Her portrayal completely blew my mind! The way I gasped and exclaimed, 'That's it! That's exactly how my Catherine Ayers should sound!' Tears streamed down my cheeks as I experienced the incredible voice Dawe gave to Ayers in this book. I'm beyond satisfied and truly grateful for such a remarkable delivery. 🥹

BOOK REVIEW: February 2023

5+ STARS Have you ever read a book wherein you shed tears not (only) because you're reading a particularly sad/heartfelt scene, but (also) because the narrative in toto is oh-so-gloriously satisfying—from the characters to the plot and theme—it simply brings tears to your eyes? That's exactly what Chaos Agent did to me. Almost every chapter in this book floored me with delight...

Being both character- and plot-driven, Chaos Agent is entertaining and compelling all throughout! I liked it more than The Fixer. And that's saying something because I still consider The Fixer as a solid 5-star read.

I cannot recommend Lee Winter's The Villains Series highly and strongly enough. It is more than a slow burn, age gap romance and more than just about the enemies-to-lovers and melting-the-ice-queen tropes in it.

Now excuse me while I wallow in a glorious book hangover...

Caution: This text is kind of “spoiler-ish”. It’s also kind of a rambling, more than a review. Per my usual style.

Whereas my comments for The Fixer explain why the book didn’t fully click with me until I read the second book, with Chaos Agent I experienced one of these incredible-read-rides that only happen every few months, and sometimes years.

This book is beyond intelligent, I mean way beyond, never mind an incredibly thrilling ride, this is called out as a romance, but allow me to call it a romantic blend with a very big side of (psychological) thriller.

As well, it is a masterful deep dive into the concept that was introduced in the first book regarding what is right and what is wrong, and just when the “on paper” wrong of something can be understandable and even acceptable, because life and feelings are a lot more complex than anything ever on paper.

This book helps us perhaps not forgive the horrible deeds of Michelle Hastings, but it certainly helps us understand where she’s coming from, what experiences (quite horrible, as well) made her do what she did. And for anyone that was still repulsed by all of those deeds, regardless –in other words, for anyone still firmly in the camp of right is right and wrong is wrong, I do believe the author found a freaking incredible way to “turn the tables” and make reluctant readers reflect – I personally think that was achieved with the “eye for an eye” event, pertaining not ‘just’ to Hastings but to the sweet and up to then very clearly sided on the “what’s right” camp Eden. I honestly think that is a masterful way to turn the tables on the staunchest supporters of the “what’s right is right and everything else is wrong” side. Turns out it did manage to turn the tables on the foremost representative of that view, Eden’s mom.

I so love the moral dilemmas this book presents, the ethical gray areas, and how they made me think. Love the fact Hastings is made accountable for her decisions, and is not entirely forgiven but sort of given a second chance (“you’re not in our supreme shit list anymore, just the regular shit list”), love the fact Eden (along with a host of readers, I would hope) comes to terms with the idea that someone is both capable of having done appalling things, but understanding what drove them there and understanding they do have a heart and a very caring nature to go with all the unsavory rest.

I am a huge fan of stories that shed light to the grayness of the world, to the fact nothing is entirely black or white, and I am exceptionally keen to read and debate on issues that force me to look at things from someone else’s shoes. This book? Big score on all this. This is not to say I condone unethical behavior as par for the course, but it is to say I do “get it” when things are not as clear cut as we’d like them to be. Almost nothing really ever is in real life. This book hits that spot so very well. And I reckon it took some very deep thinking from the author, because she started up with a character that nobody in the world liked even a tiny bit, whose behavior in previous book appearances had made her almost Public Enemy #1.

Another factor that I appreciated very much is the fact that one of the side characters, and calling her side is painful for me because she really is a hugely important character to the plot of this book, doesn’t get any kind of what I call “Hollywood retribution”. That is only so very realistic that I could almost cry. As a matter of fact, it is a rather despicable character when one thinks about it, however I ended up pretty happy with the resolution of her arc. Again with the moral/ethical dilemmas. I’d put money on the fact many readers would have expected a different outcome for this character. I am exceedingly happy with the fact she ended up where she would most likely have ended up in real life. This character is also a testament to the cunning smarts all over this book. She outsmarts even Hastings. Enough said.

I ended up liking Hastings a lot more for her flaws than for any other traits –beauty, intelligence, power, the works. It’s a character that resounded with me as deeply human. From all the ice queens I’ve read in the last few years, most get to come relatively naked on the page about why they came to be the way they are – there is always a narrative to explain their backgrounds, but I don’t recall any other Ice Queen protagonist that gets treated like this one – exposing not only what made her strong, but especially what made her flawed, with the experiences that made her the woman she is, with her fears and consequent miserable behavior, not just what made her shine longer term, but what made her fall from grace to begin with. That is quite unique in this book.

It’s likely that Hastings doesn’t get “full pardon” from a good number of readers, but she surely gets to tell her side of the story, and for anyone that is empathetic she does come out quite redeemed on the other side. At least to me. Matter of fact, as I said earlier, she is deeply human in my view – she’s like the rest of us: essentially flawed, no super-human character, no perfection in sight.

I only have resounding applause for this book.

Update: What a damn thrill the audio was. Angela Dawe is just exquisite.

I forgot to write a review for book 1 of this series. I think I finished when I was asleep….nevertheless, these two books are so brilliant. Lee Winters is the master for plot set up and character development. Her books are so distinctive and how she made Michelle vulnerable and likable is beyond me. But she DID.

Chaos Agent brings grumpy/sunshine to a new level for me. Eden is so lovely and is the perfect match for Michelle. Th secondary characters are so supportive and don’t get started on how much I love Hannah. Book one has zero spice but the pining is just perfect.

Fantastic!!! I haven’t been so entertained about a good vs. evil storyline since the first time I saw Wicked on Broadway. And unlike Elphaba, Michelle Hastings really runs an evil corporation. This is the second book in the duology and picks up right after the The Fixer. Hastings gives Eden Lawless a trial job at the Fixer corporation not wanting their interactions to end. Eden is a delightful character. She is optimism and goodness personified. I love her coffee club and pandaization of the office by way of plants.

I don’t want to give spoilers but Eden and Hastings go from friendship to enemies and back again. There is humor and warmth and some twists I didn’t see coming. Hastings needs to spend time coming to terms with her past actions and Eden is ready support her. Eden has issues too trying to live up to the perfect expectations of her mother River. It takes a while but I love the moment when there is finally time to cuddle.

The secondary characters get moments to shine. Conversations with grandma Hannah, protection from Phelim, a new mate for Kevin, support from Angie and surprises from Ottilie. All of them are important to the story. And I am invested in each of them. This book ties in with another series by Winter. If you’ve read those you get the added bonus of the appearance of two previous main characters.

As I said in my review of The Fixer these are the first books I’ve read by the author and I am blown away with delight. Winter takes a risk in this enemies to lovers romance with an unusual redemption arc for Hastings. And somehow it all works and becomes a traditional f/f romance. It takes a little too long for Hastings to decide she is worthy of love but that is a minor issue. I’m already putting these books on my read again pile because I’m sure I missed subtle things in my haste to ingest the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Ylva Publishing for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

An enjoyable continuance of The Fixer. Although the first book can be read alone I defy any reader to not want to devour this second book. I certainly didn’t want to let Eden Lawless go. Unlocking Michelle Hastings’ baggage as the story unfolded and she re-found herself was totally necessary for this reader, as was the revealing of the tying up of the loose ends of the supporting cast. Very satisfying.

Fantastic!

So Michelle has employed Eden at her secret corporation but Eden’s causing quite the stir. When she learns the truth about her new boss, the woman she’s falling for, Eden finds herself on a very different mission.

This just gets better and better (insert more random strings of nonsense fangirling in place of what’s on the video review). I adored the first book, The Fixer and now I am totally in awe of this last book in the series! Lee has outdone herself with this series, it’s gone beyond my expectations, and the way the story progresses in this follow up is exceptional.

Eden and Michelle’s relationship really intensified and I started to really worry it was all going to go wrong at one point. There was a lot of character development going on throughout this story, in both parts, and the introduction of other characters that had made a smaller appearance in book one, really gave both Michelle and Eden room to shine and really evolve. I am completely in love with them both as individuals and together, they have something special and I hope it isn’t the last we see of them.

I got really emotional reading this second part of the series though, and no not because it is the last one, but because everything Michelle and Eden went through was easily empathised with. Getting to know them both so intimately was an honour. Michelle really made the story for me though, she was coming across as the evilest and coldest character, just as I remembered from The Red Files and I couldn’t believe what was happening to her as Eden got under her skin.

Fantastic story that again my review does not do justice for. The Villains Series is an experience I cannot recommend enough, and you just have to have the experience for yourself!

4.5 ★

i might’ve lost some hours of sleep at night reading this series. i just wanted to read more and more. i immediately jumped on agent chaos after reading the fixer and oh my god this was one of the slowest burns i’ve read in a while because it took 2 books for them to finally admit their feelings for each other, and i loved every minute of it. i’m a sucker for a good slow burn, they are just superior imo.

i always loved morally grey female characters so it’s not a surprise i fell in love with michelle hastings. i’m glad we got to see more of her background in this one and all of her feelings about it. the way they cared for each other and how eden got michelle to open up little by little and how patient she was with michelle’s insecurities about being in a relationship while fighting her own, it was all very sweet.

i’ll probably make them a playlist too…
