Many learned of this warrior lord from James Clavell and his classic novel, Shogun. Two, television miniseries forty years apart brought the story to the non-reading public.
This book is a serious historical treatment of the life and times of the man who founded a dynasty based on bushido, which lasted centuries until the late 19th century.
After hearing Hiroyuki Sanada mention in multiple interviews for the TV show *Shōgun* that Lord Yoshii Toranaga was based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, and that Ieyasu was one of his heroes, I felt compelled to learn more about Ieyasu before diving into James Clavell's *Shōgun*.
This book served as a fantastic introduction for beginners to the Edo period and the life of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Very entertaining and informative read. I would probably give it 5 stars if it wasn't so rosy about mistakes Ieyasu made; the book is about him so one should expect it to show him in mostly a favorable light. Despite that, the stories are great and would recommend this to anyone interested in medieval Japan, battles, political intrigue, and/or Japan's reunification.
