Ghostly Howls
By Stephanie Hansen
This is a book I really wanted to like. The blurb sounded right down my alley. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me. Those that follow me know I rarely give a poor rating. I think I was being kind even with this rating.

I do want to thank NetGalley and publisher for letting me read this book. The theme and blurb was great if the book could replicate that in the novel itself, wow, that would be awesome. Please work on it! It would be fantastic! Not kidding!

The characters POV jumped around without warning and it took me a bit to figure out who was talking, then it would jump again. The dialogue between each other didn't seem real. Neither did the sex scenes. The characters lacked depth and realism. The one character, that was supposed to know about ghosts, was clueless and asked everyone else for answers. There were so many unanswered, or unnecessary, secrets floating around. Maybe the answers are for the next book but there wasn't enough intrigue built up to care about any of them. Then the end just stops. As will I.

In this book you can expect a good, fast paced, paranormal mystery with a hint of romance.

I really liked the quotes in the beginning of each chapter and found the Irish folklore references very interesting. I just wish we could get to know more of the paranormal world and more about the characters origins.

Overall, it was a fun quick read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Ghostly Howls has so many elements I love in a story: friends working together to defeat evil, sweet love stories (+sapphic romance!), interesting cultural and historical details, and lots of the supernatural! The setting- a tiny seaside fishing town - reminded me of the show Haven- such a great vibe! Bonus points for featuring a haunted house, Irish culture, and the story taking place during Samhain. I loved that the author used her experience with deafness and tinnitus to create a character with supernatural abilities. If you like Supernatural, you will enjoy this book!

When I tell you I inhaled this book…

Ghostly Howls is a paranormal thriller romance set in a small town in the United States with Irish roots. The two POV characters are of friends and roommates Orla and Molly. The two have supernatural gifts: Orla can possess souls with touch, while Molly is a half banshee and can sense when death is near. These gifts prove to be useful to solve the ghostly mystery haunting their town. I definitely enjoyed the Irish folklore tied to the magic and mystery, and the small town vibe.

The romance arcs are two. Orla and Dave are friends who have been platonic forever, seeing as Orla is afraid to accidentally possess his soul. Molly and Cormac, instead, is the lesbian pairing, whose drama lies in the fact that Cormac is keeping secrets. Really liked both pairings and the weight given to them both. I was rooting for them both, even though both Dave and Cormac had their moments that made me suspect.

This was a very fast and enjoyable read that I recommend to fans of paranormal books and thrillers!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

***I received this advanced copy for free provided by NetGalley and I'm leaving rhis comment voluntarily. ***
Let's start by the Irish folklore... can't say how exciting this was specially because we don't see it much in fantasy books and it locked my attention completely.
Wasn't really happy about being such a short book because I knew from the start that the story wouldn't have time to grow, but even thought it was short it still had loads of things happening from the beginning until the end.
I have to say I realized with this book I'm not a fan of anything related to terror because in the scene in Orla and Molly's house in the room they couldn't open I actually had to stop reading because it was night time and it would be a terrible idea.
I would love to read this book in an extended version since for me the negative point was definitely being so short, it worked against the book quality, specially in the scene in the lighthouse when I felt everything was happening so fast I couldn't really understand what was going on and when I finally understood it was already over.
Strong characters, definitely a lot of variety here and the plot was very strong.

A good fast paced paranormal book with plenty of mystery and a little romance. I really enjoyed the folklore within the book and the quotes at the beginning of the chapters. I just think it would be a nice addition to get more back ground on the characters. Overall it was a really nice quick read.

In the fictional town of Ethel, a port city with secrets, two women who, besides being best friends, also share another commonality amongst themselves but separate from the rest of the town. Orla has the gift that pairs as a curse of possessing people’s souls with a single touch. Molly is half banshee with the ability of knowing when someone has or will die, through an auditory ringing in her ears. Both girls have had their abilities for as long as they can remember and have learned to adapt as needed.

Both girls find themselves infatuated with their respective mates, working on juggling their relationships alongside their gifts. Orla and Dave have been friends since forever, but have never felt each other’s skin in the way that they both secretly desire. Molly and Cormac have a relationship that could look confusing and complicated to the outside, and is continuing to be worked on. Besides the fact that there are two girls in working relationships, both with paranormal abilities, now there has been a murder with direct links to historical happens that could likely be the result of ghosts with a hidden agenda.“Ghostly Howls” is best suited for a mature audience. The storyline is written well in that it holds the reader captivated throughout the story, yet some of the material included is comparatively graphic with the descriptions of the sex scenes. The language overall is neutral, with occasional profanity, along with talk of people dying in torturous ways. The storyline was enjoyable, yet there was more than one spot when a character or situation was introduced and I felt like I was missing something that should have either been mentioned previously in the text.

Overall, the author did well to explain the characters and situations, just at a different point than I would have thought. The intense sex scene is between two girls, and two boys are engaged to be married, so depending on your beliefs, proceed or not. The story is short in length but the author packs a lot into these pages.

If you enjoy a story with supernatural or paranormal activity, a solid mystery, LGBTQ characters, and self-discovery, check out “Ghostly Howls” coming out soon!

“Ghostly Howls” piqued my interest when it was submitted for review, and then again upon reading Rachel’s review, so I just had to give it a look myself! I found the storyline distinctive and enticing, the alternating points of view between Orla and Molly keeping readers on their toes and adding layers of drama to the whirlwind of events. There is a lot of story packed into this novella-size narration, though I would like to have seen a bit more of the backstory behind all of the characters. They are quirky and fun and I want to get to know them better—maybe a sequel or a series is in the works?

One thing that stands out to me is Molly’s superpower, which stems from the author’s real-life challenges with Tinnitus. I love that she pushed a personal health issue beyond its limitations and turned it into a superpower. It’s a beautiful way to support disabilities and promote respect and acceptance. While we’re talking about inclusivity, Hansen packs this story with not one but two LGBTQ couples and I just have to say bravo for adding to the growing representation of the genre. And the steamy sex scene between Molly and Cormac – phew! Well done.

Overall, if you want a fast-paced, easy read that is chock full of entertainment, “Ghostly Howls” is one book to add to your reading list.

The author has written a story that captivated me even though there are descriptive sex scenes. The novel is best suited for “mature readers.” The author did well describing the characters. There is some profanity. The story has paranormal activity which I enjoyed reading. It is a fast-pace and at times a funny read.

This book is based around Irish Lore. Orla, a soul posseser and her best friend, Molly, a halfling (half Banshee) live together. Strange things start happening around town when people start hearing ghostly voices and a girl turned up murdered.

Orla's power is instant to touch and therefore hasn't been able to make physical contact with the person she has loved for as long as she can remember. Until she finds out that touching Dave could help guide her powers in the right direction.

Molly and Cormac are in an on/off emotional relationship and aren't used to being open with each other.

They all need to work together in order to solve the mystery of their town and the unknown girl's murder.

I enjoyed this book very much. From the beginning it gave me Nancy Drew vibes - and not ordinary Detective Nancy Drew, but the 2019 tv series SUPERNATURAL Nancy Drew.

It was fast-paced and interesting bwritting in first person narrative from the perspectives of both, Orla and Molly.

I enjoyed this title! Super quick read with lots to love! Paranormal romance takes me back to my teen years, I was obsessed and I absolutely loved them. This is perfect for fans of a small town romance, a haunting mystery, supernatural gifts, and light on the spice.

Orla and Molly were so fun to follow, I love their powers. Molly is a banshee/seer and Orla has the power to possess a soul by touching them. It’s so intriguing to see them unravel the plot and the mystery. All this happens while having their romance which I was all in for! I absolutely love Cormac and Dave, they really added to the plot and the growth of the sisters.

Definitely give this a go if you love mystery!
Huge thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.

Loved, loved, loved this story! The paranormal aspects were highly creative and seemed so realistic, I could almost believe in banshees and possessors and the like. The romance between Orla and David was soooo sweet and I rooted hard for them to get together. The friendship between all the main characters was very realistic and I loved the bond they shared. There was also a lot of witty banter, which I enjoyed. The writing was engaging and flawless. I was totally engrossed from beginning to end.

A fresh voice in paranormal fantasy has emerged and Stephanie Hansen is her name. This paranormal story may be short, but it packs a lot between the pages. Blending Irish mythology, supernatural beings hiding in plain sight, a mystery to unravel, plus two romances, this novella has something for everyone to enjoy.

For a novella, this has a fairly large cast of characters. I was surprised at first but soon got caught up in the story. I liked both Orla and Molly right away. Their closeness was evident from the start. It was hard to get a connection with either of them due to the shortness of the story. The other characters filled out the story nicely but not with much depth.

The plot moved at a whip-fast pace. The descriptive narration lent itself to the frantic vibe to the overall plot. First, Cormac was missing then a body was found murdered. I spent most of my time trying to figure out what was happening and why.

The romance part I had the most difficulty with. A lot of describing but without the necessary emotion. If I were to rename the genre, I’d put it as paranormal fantasy or paranormal.

What I loved most was the world-building. The world-building was excellent, and the mystery kept me entertained.

If you’re looking for a quick, fast-moving paranormal set in a small town, you’ll love Ghostly Howls.

I received this book from Escapist Tours + publisher/author in exchange of an honest review.

I will just say that while I really enjoyed the book, I did have some negative things as well.

🥰 Loved the cover! I am big cover lover fan so a cover that I love makes me happy!
🥰 Loved that we didn’t just get supernatural elements but also got to read about the two couples, Orla and Dave | Molly and Cormac. I also loved that with Dave and Orla we got so much depth. Because Orla is a soul possessor and well, her boyfriend is an ordinary man and she doesn’t want to suck out his soul. What that means is that there is a lot of friction because he wants to give her a hug, or hold her, or just comfort her. And of course, kissing and sex, but hey, I think he is already very happy if he can just be there for her. I was just so delighted when they were able to talk, when things went a bit deeper. I was happy for Dave and happy (and proud) for Orla.
🥰 I loved that there are supernatural things lurking everywhere! I am very curious about this world and I would like to read more!
🥰 That Molly is a banshee, a half one, so instead of what banshees often have, she hears ringing when someone is dying/in danger. I can imagine that you would move to a quiet small town, because heck you will go craycray if you had to stay in a big city.
🥰 Loved the spooky things that happend + the murder. The story went from relationship-stuff and some supernatural things to some scary moments. Including something that is living in Cormac and Orla’s house. Oh yes!
🥰 The sex scenes were VERY well written.
🥰 Loved reading about this quaint little town and the inhabitants. I just love a quaint little town!
🥰 The festival was fun! Wish I could have been part of it!
🥰 The friendship between Molly and Orla was pretty good. Really love that they are able to talk about things, I can imagine that you at times want to chat about what happened to you with your supernatural powers and a supernatural friend is the best to have.
🥰 Boomer! I love dogs in stories!

All in all, I had fun reading it. Especially the first 70% was just WOW. And I liked the last two chapters. I am happy I had the chance to read this one!

However here are the points I wasn't a fan of:
The ending was SUPER RUSHED. I feel that from around 70% the story just took off and things happened so fast that at times I just had to re-read. There is a sudden revelation about the dead body from way earlier that came just out of nowhere and I feel that if it is THAT person why didn't anyone tell her friends? I mean, everyone knows everyone in this town so that just stood out. There were some issues with the writing, it went from pretty organised to all over the place. Sentences just didn't seem to work. The end boss was done in such a way that I was just like, wait, that is it? I think that if you gave the book 50 pages more and got everything a bit more neatly tied up things would have worked. Now it felt like there was a deadline/max number of pages and OMG we are almost there, GO GO GO.
First 70% I would give around 4 stars. But the last 30% is so weird.

This book has an original premise that I found interesting.

Orla has to be careful not to touch others as this can cause their souls to join hers. Her friend Molly has solitary needs as well. She has the ability to sense when someone is going to expire.

Something odd is going on in their house..and the whole town. They are determined to find out what before it's too late..

The description makes this book sound awesome.

The disjointed writing, lackluster plot, and shallow characters were not awesome.

There is so much potential on the pages and I could see where the story might’ve been great but I failed to understand why this mystery mattered and why I should care about characters.

This honestly felt more like a novella than a book or an early draft. We got half a story, but what we got was really interesting! I just felt like a huge chunk of the story was done off page and the reader was left in the dark. I loved the characters and wanted to know more about them and more about this town. We jumped time so much and so many things happened between chapters that it made me feel like I was watching random episodes of a show and missing big plot points.

I jumped right into this book and stayed up all night reading it! The story bounces back between the views and feelings of two best friends, Orla and Molly. Orla is a soul possessor meaning if she touches someone she can possess their soul and thoughts. Her abilities are mainly hidden and have made her life extremely difficult, especially within the realm of her growing love for her childhood friend, Dave. Molly, on the other hand, is a half-banshee and can hear the calls when someone is about to die but it’s not guaranteed she will know who. Both have their struggles and secrets but understand each other, and in their small town, that’s a blessing. However, when a dead body shows up, local fishermen start hearing ghosts, Molly starts having strange visions, and Molly’s girlfriend (a self-proclaimed medium of sorts) offers her services, the once small, safe town becomes the opposite. Not to mention Dave’s own mysterious behavior and the mysterious door in Molly and Orla’s home opens. There are so many twists to the story and I enjoyed figuring them out in the end. This is a great quick read YA and has some mature language and sex scenes.

Ghostly Howls is an excellent book for fiction, supernatural and fantasy literature fans; it is super entertaining and exciting, you will feel identified with some aspects of life and romance that are shown in this book. It tells the story of Orla and Molly, who must save their town immersed in mysteries and murders, their goal is to find the murderer or they could die before finding their true love.

The book talks about how the two main characters have unrequited and difficult romances, it talks about how difficult it is for them to save the town without using their special abilities; both have powers that would help solve all the mysteries in the history, but they don't know if they can use them openly.

A paranormal fantasy romance, where adolescent angst and friendship are captured, with well-developed characters and a very attractive plot. In general, an incredible book, very interesting and entertaining, I highly recommend it, it will have you super captivated.

"Ghostly Howls: A Paranormal Fantasy Romance" is a thrilling and captivating read for fans of the genre. The story is full of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, and the characters are well-developed and dynamic. I particularly enjoyed the romantic tension between the two lead characters and the unique take on the paranormal aspect of the story. The writing style is smooth and engaging, making for a very enjoyable reading experience. However, I do feel that some of the plot developments were a bit predictable, and some of the character motivations were not fully fleshed out. Overall, "Ghostly Howls" is a great choice for fans of the paranormal romance genre and those looking for an exciting, heart-pumping read.

I have read many books by Stephanie Hansen and she always surprises and enchants readers with gripping narratives, compelling topics, fantasy and plots that are full of twists and turns perfect to engage readers from the first pages of her novels. An important part of this author’s books is the development of the characters. They are generally interesting and believable. All these characteristics can be found in this new book too. The topic is very interesting since it mixes folklore, fantasy and romance. In this book, the protagonists will have to use their supernatural powers to save their town and find love along the way. I really enjoyed these two female protagonists. They are clever and entertaining.

I have no idea where to start because there is just so much I liked about this book.
I guess I can start by talking about the narration which is absolutely flawless and full of unexpected twists and turns.
The characters made me fall in love with them; they were full of life and their daily struggles made me laugh, cry and sometimes I was even scared for them. The protagonists, Orla and Molly, have fascinating and unique personalities. The rest of the cast is well developed and amazing, too, but maybe to a lesser extent.
As regards the writing style; thanks to the author's sublimity, the story evokes all types of emotions as readers are inevitably drawn in into the plot.
All in all, it's a good and enjoyable read.

Ghostly Howls by Stephanie Hansen is a fast-paced mystery and romance novel set to entertain with an incredible set of characters. In a town that is drowned in mysteries and shadows, Orla and Molly are tasked with finding the killer, and the threat of their demise becomes real pretty fast. Orla and Dave, plus Molly and Cormac, are faced unprepared for their new ghostly neighbors. The question looms: can they use their powers openly to save the citizens or become a victim. The author has done an amazing job building up the characters and penning the teenager angst in stark reality. I enjoyed the storyline and the investigative nature of the story. It’s a solid read for the paranormal and fantasy lovers. I recommend it.

a mix of love, soul possession, and a thirst for justice.

“Ghostly Howls” by Hansen is a thrilling book for sure. It contains heartbreak, forbidden love, and paranormal mystery. The narrative introduces Orla and Molly, they both have unique abilities in a town that is filled with secrets. The plot is made out of a mix of love, soul possession, and a thirst for justice. This book definitely touches some sensitive themes. This includes some adult topics as well as romance and mysterious events.
The dynamic characters, particularly Orla and Molly seem very authentic and real to me. This makes the book even better. Their struggles with love and acceptance made me feel really identified. I can recommend this book to anyone with a strong spirit and heart.

Ghostly Howls by author Stephanie Hansen is a novel above all, captivating. From my experience, it is ideal for those readers looking for moments of dispersion or maybe to read on holidays. From the first chapters, it is easy to be immersed in this universe of paranormal fantasy. Not only because of the fast-paced, easy to read and captivating narrative, but also because of the romantic plot and the mystery. Readers of this work should be prepared to use their minds to solve a puzzling mystery while navigating through secrets, drama and adults' scenes in a romance tale. There was never a dull moment and it kept me entertained the whole time.

Ghostly Howls: A Paranormal Fantasy Romance by Stephanie Hansen is yet another paranormal YA novel, with an entertaining and intriguing concept. Two best friends Orla, a soul possessor and Molly a half banshee journey through adulthood and finding a killer before he/she kills everyone in town. I get it they are different but this town is really horrible ostracizing two girls who might be their last hope. It is a good read , fast paced, easy to read, but has a lot of mature content, so I would suggest it to a bit more older YA crowd. There are some intimate scenes, so be a bit more vigilant if you are getting this for your younger family member.
