This was a short quick read that I liked. Leah falls hard and fast for Nate losing herself in him. She allows him to come in and out of her life and each time he goes she loses a little more of herself. When she gets the courage to leave him I was glad that she did. I felt that she gave too much of herself to him and found myself wanting to shout at her for being naive and vulnerable. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
This Novella Loving Nate is a must read for 2014. Nate is handsome, charismatic and full of sweet lyrics; Leah on the other hand is a beautiful, sassy, confident and loveable woman who any man would desire to have. The chemistry between Nate and Leah is refreshing, hypnotic and quite flirtatious. The romantic spark and passion is definitely connecting these two. The fireworks ignited in Leah’s heart has she began to fall deeply in love with Nate however, Nate seems to be Mr. Impossible with his disappearing acts. Even though disappears when he feels like it, it certainly hasn’t stopped Leah from giving Nate her heart and falling into his arms whenever he shows up.
Love is surely a priceless gift but when it is given freely and not reciprocated it can cause disappoint and pain to the other party. Janice did an excellent job with this storyline from beginning to the end. It demonstrates the feelings of disappoint that occurs in a relationship when both people are not on the same level with their emotional attachment but when the romance is hot, it is hot. The emotions expressed are so raw and real, it keeps you wrapped up in the story and you feel every bit of what Leah feels. It’s hard to put this book down because it captivates your mind and stimulates your thoughts and brings you back to reflect on where you’ve been in your own relationship. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
This book has ripped me to shreds emotionally…that’s the first thing I have to say. I say this because I have been Leah for most of my adult life. That’s why I am so hung up on the conviction that baby girls need their daddies. Good men who will instill in their girls a sense of self worth that will not fail them to life’s shysters as happened to Leah. And myself on more than one occasion.
I think that’s why I took forever to finish this little novella. I kept wanting to slap Leah and thereby convicting myself and you know the whole thing about taking the log out of your own eye first. The endings, both of them are heartbreaking to me… Ms Ross just doesn’t let up or give us a break. She dishes it out just as life does and you choose to either make lemonade out of the sorry mess as done in ending 1 or disintegrate into something you don’t even recognize or want to know as in ending 2.
I have read a number of reviews that said you choose which ending you like, but I don’t think it is even a matter of choosing really more than it is representing the characters of both types of women who fall prey to these men.
Some women are able to rip themselves away and sort to start anew even if it might mean settling for something less …fiery and passionate. Others remain addicted to the scoundrel and his mess and become victims who never make it out
So I think what the author does it offer the reader who may be in this situation a realistic glimpse of the likely result of choosing either way, and an opportunity for self reflection.
By the way, her writing is superb, but dwelling on why I say this will make this review twice as long and this book already holds the record for the longest review I’ve done for a novella. I hope you will grab a copy and enjoy it.
Janice Ross is back and this time she's written a love story in the form of a novella. This is a story about Leah and Nate who are two ambitious people, career-driven, independent, and attractive. No one can deny the magnetic chemistry between Nate and Leah which is seen at the very beginning of the story through their frequent curt flirtations. With each scene the level of flirtatiousness steps up a notch- from mere words, to touching-to kissing to----well, you get it! As things begin to unfold between them, and Leah's heart grows to love Nate, he flips the script and becomes "Mr. Disappearing Acts" so to speak. Suddenly he conveniently shows up into Leah's life whenever he desires. Each time, Leah puts everything on hold and dives "heart" first into Nate's arms. Janice does a great job at building anticipation with this storyline. I was kept on the edge of my seat. This story shows that for some people, love can be a game when they're not honest with themselves or others involved, but when you really love someone and they don't love you back with the same 100 percent that you put in, then the scales become unbalanced and someone is bound to get hurt. The third wheel that's skillfully woven into this love story, leaves one heart broken, and there may not be anything left to mend it.
This novella can easily lend itself to a novel. For the alternate ending I chose option one, although I wish it were not left up to me, but the author.
***Received from author for an honest review*** (This is a short story/novella. This review is not based on story length but story content as length has very little to do with how much I enjoy a book.)
Wow! I was blown away by this little story. Told in first person, we’re given front row seats to watch love blossom between Leah and Nate.
Both are successful and seem to know what they want. They fall hard, fast, and unexpectedly for each other. Their love takes time to grow, more than a few days, more than a few weeks or months, and it was beautiful to watch.
I loved how they seemed to give their all to each other, but that adoration faded when Nate started disappearing for longer periods of time, appearing in Leah’s life when it was convenient for him. I felt for Leah each time she put her life on hold, each time she wondered where he was, each time she slipped into despondency.
This story offers two alternate endings. True, most romances end with an absolute HEA, but this one gives the reader a chance to choose the ending they prefer. I won’t give them away, you’ll have to read to find out, but both endings are thought provoking and completely probable.
This is my first story by Ms. Ross, and I’m more than pleased with what she’s written.
Sensuous, moving, emotional, Loving Nate is beautifully written - Janice Ross' use and skill with language is first class.
Loving Nate builds really well, the characters are strong and also includes for lovely, heartfelt poetry. I felt I was with Leah in every stage of her relationship, experiencing every up and down with her, and at times I just wanted to hug her, cry on her shoulder, and lead her by the hand.
Leah thinks she has found the man of her dreams, at least for alittle while. Leah has some self esteem issues and Nate is a man you want to slap. Nate has not turned in his player card and Leah seems to be blind to the truth. Great read but wish it was longer. Many times I wanted to scream at Leah and take a hit out on Nate.
First time reading this author, but will read again
I ought to have been prepared for what this story holds in store. I had read the blurb and the author's notes. But, starting reading it, I was so drawn in by Ms Ross's effervescent writing with surprising and daring turns of phrase springing up on every single page, that I just lay back (forgetting that my seat was a hardback train seat) to enjoy a steamy romance with the two characters engaging in funny, witty banter.
Leah is gorgeous, self-confident and on the road to success. And then, on her first day at a new and promising job, she bumps into Nathan Moore--as in her boss's boss. Nate is the guy a girl can only dream of. Perfect in all possible ways. He's too good to be true. And he isn't. Gradually, the story gets darker, and we see Leah's natural light diminishing, as she gives her all to Nate, getting very little in return, or rather everything and then absolutely nothing. The course she follows is that of a junkie: as long as she gets her Nate-fix, instantly transporting her to Nathanland, she's fine; when he disappears, the withdrawal symptoms are physically and mentally debilitating. Will Leah find the strength to fight back? Reclaim her old self?
This story is expertly written; the emotions are incredibly raw, their depiction poignant and they manage to resonate deeply whether you've been through a similar all-consuming relationship or not. "I don't do drama. I write it" is what Ms Ross claims in her Twitter bio, and, apparently, it's true. A major originality is that she goes as far as to offer two different endings to Leah and Nate's story. But I think that's where I have my reservations. While they are well-written, plausible and totally not cliché, reading two very different versions didn't give me an appropriate closure. Also, the second ending turns too dark, showing a side of both characters I could do without and it turns out that's the aftertaste I took away with me. Initially, I was enthusiastic about having two options to choose from; now, I'm not sure I want to have such power as a reader.
Putting that aside, though, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Loving Nate, and I'm glad I was given the opportunity to get to know Ms Ross as a writer. I'm now a fan, waiting to get my hands on her other work, especially Damaged Girls Iwhich is also mentioned in this novel.
This book was offered to me in exchange for an honest review.
I want to say that Loving Nate is the story of Leah falling in love with Nathan Moore, but I feel like it is more Leah’s personal journey than anything else. Leah is an independent, ambitious, educated woman who meets Nate on her first day at a new job. Nate is the “perfect” guy and Leah falls for him. After all, he is a smooth operator.
At its heart, this book is about the process of falling in love. To take things a step further, it explores why it’s important to have expectations in relationships. We are to expect any mate of ours to treat us a certain way. And then we have to learn when to let go.
Leah is head-over-heels in love and things in her life start to become affected by her relationship. She isolates herself from her friends and loses herself in the process. She loves hard, which I think a lot of us do and that’s what drew me into the story. It was a very realistic story and I know many “Leahs.”
Nate is like an angel in disguise. On the surface, he has everything together: attractive, intelligent, charming… but as they say “all that glitters isn’t gold.” Soon, he starts disappearing. While reading, I was actually wondering why I would even root for the two together, and by the end I didn’t. This isn’t your average romance with the happily-ever-after. It was a real account of relationships. Sometimes we have to make hard decisions and Leah needed to make them quickly.
This book had me switching from yelling at the characters to tearing up with Leah. It was hard to get into at first, but it picked up. The drama that unfolded and the emotional turmoil pulled me into it. At some points, I did feel that I needed more detail but I did enjoy the book overall. I especially appreciated the alternate endings. I prefer Alternate ending #1. I won’t give anything away, but it made me feel good that Leah finally got it.
Loving Nate is about a woman's struggle with loving a man but having to deal with his flaws. No matter the sex of a person we should have limits as to what we should and shouldn't accept. Then there are times all reasoning goes out the window and no matter how big the signs are, we don't always read them and that is the case with Leah. This story was about the inner struggles of a woman's to find her inner strength...or does she?
When Leah first met Nate he knocked her off her feet so hard she didn't know what hit her. He was handsome, smooth and educated. He was the whole package so how could she let any man who made her feel like a princess go? To some it may be easy but to others, not so much. Love is not always easy but it should never be blind as it is to some. When do we say enough?
There were clues along the way, big clues like her doubts and fears, not wanting answers to questions that needed to be asked, and the loss of one's inner self as an educated, independent woman along this rocky journey. I feel if you want something so desperately then it’s not really yours because if it is yours then there should be no desperation.
The characters were well written and the story was developed and no matter what way I felt about them they touched me. I felt both pity and anger for Leah but there were times I felt as she did. Sadly, I only felt disappointment towards Nate. Only a great writer can make you feel as the characters do. The story was intriguing and riveting, as expected. Janice G Ross writes another story that I could not put down.
* Bonus I like that fact that there were two ending so I could decide for myself and I chose ending number one. I believe in strong women. Great job Janice
Author, Janice Ross pins a novella that reminds me to not leap with the deceitful emotions of the heart but follow the mind. Protagonist, Leah Daniels is ready to conquer the world. She has a new executive level career, lives in a nice condo and she is feeling confident. However she is not so confident when she meets, dates and have a revolving relationship with the handsome Nate Moore, her boss, boss. Nate has a habit of disappearing for weeks and even a few months after spending the most perfect couple of months with Leah. Leah does not question him about these disappearance and accepts him when ever and where ever he reappears. The author conjure two endings that allows the readers to select a satisfying end. That's a new spin and huge kudos to the author!! However, hold that thought, It's not a cut and dry choice. The author provides one ending that is gentle and forgiving, while you wish the best for one character as sorrow elopes for the other. The second ending takes you into unfaithfulness, mixed emotion and anger that erupts. I enjoyed reading about a relationship that actually was based from friendship first- before the couple immediately dives into sexual encounters. My reading pace was moderate throughout the story, the plot kept me interested til the end. Characters were satisfying. My rating of the book cover is a 4/5. I mean who can resist a handsome man. This book sits on my shelf as a Darn Good Read with a rating of 3.5 /5 and Ms. Janice Ross has made my Authors list.
There are some stories you read and forget but some stories lives with you, Loving Nate is one such story which makes you think “what if”. This wonderful novella is a story about a young beautiful, sassy, confident woman Leah who falls in love with Mr. Perfect aka her boss aka Nate. Nate is a typo man - handsome, charismatic, confident and know how and when to use his charm. When Leah fell hard for him he started disappearing but he has instilled such a faith in Leah that she loved him across boundaries and accepted everything without any questions. Sounds familiar? To me it does. Now comes “what if” the two probable endings (not going to tell about it, won’t be a buzz killer), where Ms. Ross leaves us with two probable possibilities, what we want the Leah in almost all of us to decide. In the end it made me think, is it right to fall in love so hard and loose sense, to let our guards go down so that what we call “love” be reciprocated by pain and we endure it as we aren’t left with any other alternative knowing that it’s a joke on us. Before I start reading this amazing novella once again and my mind get captivated by Leah’s emotions I will suggest Hurry up! Get your copy! It’s amazing and a must read!
This well-crafted novella introduces such interesting likeable people, that we fall for them right away. Both new young executive Leah and her boss's boss Nathan are easy to get to know and seem like a great couple in a flirtatious relationship. He's Jamaican and she's from Florida but loves Jamaica, Caribbean food and reggae.
Then we realise that the sudden romance is not doing Leah any favours at work in the media firm and she is becoming isolated from her best friend.
When everything seems to be going well, Nathan takes off on a business trip - for two months. Should Leah trust a man who isn't calling her? When this pattern is repeated, we wonder at Leah's patience as she becomes more confused.
Perhaps society is at fault, by telling women that they must stand by their man, be virtuous and loyal, accept that men need space and will come back in time. This only works if both sides intend the relationship to work, fairly. If one side is taking advantage, it's time to re-examine matters.
I liked the unusual feature of two alternative workings out of the plot, and I particularly notice what had not changed. Ladies, read this novella. You may learn from it, you may grow stronger and you will enjoy the writing too.
This story had a heated beginning and a slow burning middle but the ending(s) were both so different. Without giving you a run down account of the whole story this read is different to the usual reads i have on my kindle, it isn't full of sex and there aren't many details about it, the main character Nate is a charming, gorgeous rogue that has Leah having to keep her wits about her not to let him sweep her away with no sense of return, eventually Leah's perfect bubble is burst and she soon realizes he isn't everything he promised, when she gives him her all he takes it and keeps on taking, the story almost ends but then the author offers two endings, one is a HEA but not how you would expect it and the second is just plain sad, i felt as hurt as Leah when i learnt Nate wasn't everything we thought he was but i liked ending number 1's outcome for him, the story was good and as a short read it passed the time but i need a book that has a definite outcome.
In Loving Nate, Janice G Ross pulls the reader into an emotional relationship between the two main characters with beautiful, descriptive writing. Not only is this story an entertaining work of fiction, but the reader should be left with a desire to contemplate relationships in their own lives. I love how the author has two different endings, showing how our own choices can change our lives for better or worse. A highly recommended read at only a $2.49 ebook price!
I have to say, too, definitely check out Janice’s books; she has several fantastic titles to choose from! You can find her on Amazon!
I imagine quite a few women (myself included) have been in Leah Daniels’ situation that is so expertly written about by Janice Ross in ‘Loving Nate’ . Leah’s love for Nathan ‘Nate’ Moore borders on the obsessive, but there is one small problem; Nate keeps disappearing for weeks on end and Leah doesn’t know why. She makes excuses for his absence in her mind, but finally has to confront her fears.
The author has written two different endings to this quick read, and I rather like the second one (I’m sure I would have done the same if faced with a similar situation). The book is edited well, and I thoroughly recommend it.
"Loving Nate" by Janice Ross is the story of a passionate love. Nate appears to be Mister Right but then he begins to act oddly and throws Leah in turmoil. Ross expertly explores the rational and emotional sides to an all consuming love, the dangers of defining oneself through love and the eventual resolve for Leah and Nate. In alternative endings Ross presents two ideas of what should happen to the lovers. Those endings were not what I had expected but I am all the mroe grateful for it. The author writes with great honesty and a sharp mind, depicting all too human behaviour and thoughts with excellent observations and details. A very thought provoking and accomplished novella.
Janice Ross has penned a story that hits home for many women--both those who are young and those who are at a more seasoned age. Most of us have been fools for love and endured the pain that goes along with letting our guards down and giving in to the sometimes tortuous roller coaster that love can be. There are invaluable lessons taught between the lines of this carefully crafted story. This is a must read for women of every age, race, and socioeconomic status.
Author Janice G. Ross had me hooked from the beginning of the book. The story is one that happens often in relationships. Love becomes stronger than reason. Leah Daniels falls in love with Nathan (Nate) Moore and the love overshadows reason when she finds herself questioning their relationship.
The book flows smoothly and I read it quickly as I got caught up in Leah's life. The author gives you two endings. You choose which way you feel the book should end. I choose ending one.
Definitely a good read, but made all the better by the alternative endings. I couldn't see how it work to begin with but Janice Ross sets the scene so well it all falls into place no matter which ending you choose. Clever and well written.
I gotta say that this was a pretty good read. I connect with Leah because I have been in a similar situation. The characters actions are frustrating and at times heartbreaking. Leah is a sympathetic protagonist and a woman that finds herself fighting for two loves.... Self and Nate. All in all I liked it.
The premise of the story is a good one, the characters were okay, but seemed rather weakly portrayed to me. I did like the idea of alternate endings. Unfortunately, though, I didn't care much for the writing or the story. I didn't connect with the characters, or feel emotionally drawn in to the story at all.
Title: Loving Nate Author: Janice G. Ross Publisher: Cultural Cocktails Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Rating: 5 Review:
"Loving Nate" by Janice G. Ross
Book Description....
"Loving Nate is Leah's story of falling in love with Mr. Perfect. Leah falls fast and hard, losing all sense of reasoning. Love can do that to a gal, especially when the guy is as smooth as Nathan Moore. Loving Nate is about Leah's journey of falling in love, when she should have been standing in love. *Author's Note* I've decided to provide two very different endings to this novella. Have you ever made a decision and wondered whether or not it was the right choice? Or perhaps you made the right choice because you knew that the alternative would've been disastrous? This is my gift to readers. Regardless of Leah's final choice, I wanted readers to be able to reflect on the possibilities."
What I liked about this read....
I thought this novel was a very thought provoking read that definitely caught my attention from this novella from start to finish. This author really does a wonderful job with her well descriptive writing showing all the emotional sides of this thing called love. The two main characters were both richly developed, however, one seemed to change after some time which leaves one to wonder why. This was a intriguing read as you find both people seeming to be very much in love and then later one seems to put away. You could be lead to think maybe they weren't on the same emotional level even though their romance seemed very hot at the beginning.
"Loving Nate" even gets more interesting as this author will gives the reader two alternating endings which I will say are even more intriguing being thought provoking and definitely probable. Will it be option one or two? Now, you will have to pick up "Loving Nate" to see how this author brings it to the reader and then you can choose your desired ending.
What I especially liked about the read....
"Loving Nate" will definitely give one reason to ask the question why is it important who you fall in love with and what they can do with that love...will it be something they want forever or will it just be thrown away at their convenience? When I stopped and thought about this read I realized it is a good real story that can happen to many of us every single day. This is a excellent story that you could learn from. The option is definitely ours to choose. Be ready for a very captivating read that will leave you with some interesting thoughts.
“LOVING NATE” was about Leah Daniels and her immediate fall into love with Nate Moore, her boss’s boss. First off, I must begin with I love this cover and Janice G. Ross is a wiz in the creation of book covers. This cover alone makes YOU want to fall in love with Nate, he’s so gorgeous, and it also makes you want to open up the book to find out what it’s about. But, I’m not judging this book on it’s cover. I’m giving my opinion of the writing. Some people tend to review based on the storyline, whether or not they liked the way the characters were written, OR even if they like or dislike the author. I judge ONLY on the merit of the writing itself and whether or not you LIKE the created characters, the author or the storyline, the writing is what everyone should base their reviews on. Was it well-written?
In this story, I found verbiage that at times had me a little lost. There were conversations that took place between Nate and Leah that were confusing to me because they ran right into each other. There was no direction to let me know that she was speaking or that he was speaking in certain instances. Sometimes, we as authors, need to realize that “less is more” in writing, and the over-use of words that are more difficult than necessary can at times, detract from the story. Was this a good story? It was, even in spite of the pitfalls that I experienced along the way. I know Janice G. Ross personally and I know that she is a talented writer in her mind AND on paper. I feel that at times we need to go back and tweak areas in our writing to improve it, and with this being done, this story could be better than what it is now. I’m giving a 4 star rating because I feel that the author is capable of more.
I really wanted to like this book - I'd read about this author and I'd read the reviews. I've spent a lot of time thinking about the story before deciding to write my own review. First things first; I generally liked the plot and I loved the idea of alternative endings. My problem was that I had no empathy with the protagonist, Leah, and I've tried to work out why. She's portrayed as a clever, attractive, street-wise woman. I do believe in love at first sight, and this is a great example of that theme. So what was it? If the author intended her to be so self absorbed, then she succeeded; Leah describes her assets many times, even while being so obsessed with Nate. Written in the first person point of view, with mostly internal dialogue, the reader learns a great deal about Leah but, through her, only the façade of Nate, whose own dialogue is filled with clichés. And this, I think, may be part of the problem. He doesn't really came alive for me. And, In love or not, for me, this was the weak point in the plot; that the reader has to believe that this strong protagonist would accept the way Nate behaves for so long, when, despite his apparent physical attractiveness he is otherwise portrayed as such an weak character .However I thoroughly enjoyed the first one alternative ending where Leah, for me, became a more rounded believable protagonist..
LOVING NATE is about Leah Daniels and her falling in love with Nathan Moore. Leah quickly falls for this charming man and their love is tested…a lot! Leah is left with a difficult decision. BUT there is a twist! The author provides two very different endings. This gives readers the opportunity to truly reflect on the different outcomes, the different possibilities.
This was such a quick read and the story flows effortlessly, as we see the world through Leah’s eyes. You dive head first into her life, being pulled right along with her. What Leah experiences is something many people can relate to because love like this does, in fact, exist. A love that completely takes over, becoming stronger and more important than reason.
The characters of LOVING NATE are just as real as the emotions are raw. And we get to see them change and develop as the story— and their relationship— progresses. The fact that we have alternate endings makes this novella even better. As readers, we often wonder what would’ve happened if a different decision had been made. Well, Janice gives us the opportunity to see that.
There is only one drawback for LOVING NATE……I wanted more! I wanted to read about Leah’s next chapter of her life.
While Nate isn’t your average type of book boyfriend, you can’t help but wonder what the story behind his behavior is. Sometimes even root for him and Leah to end up together, but things are not always as it seems and when you finally find out; it will leave you wondering what the hell just happened. I love that in a book, a good book has to keep you wondering about what's going to happen next. I Totally didn’t picture an ending like this and while I am waiting for Jezebel Jones 2 – I need an Aiden fix, so hurry up already Miss Ross :p – I’ll be browsing through the wide assortment of books you have already published to find my next read...
Loving Nate is Leah's story about falling hard and fast for Nate. When she first met him he knocked her off her feet he was educated, smooth and Handsome. he treated her like a Princess , how do you let someone like that go? There were clues along the way like his disappearing for weeks at a time even months after spending the most perfect months with her. She never questioned him and always took him back when he came back . Janice Ross gives you two alternate endings so that you the reader get to decide how the story ends for Leah and Nate.
I read this on the train going to work and it made a great start to my day. Whisking me away from my commute into a story that was really very enjoyable. I love the way Janice Ross writes, she makes you feel as though you have known her characters for ages. And..... I thought the story was just fabulous!
