John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
As a book featuring chapters from different books written by MacArthur, the quality of each chapter varies. For the most part, I felt like MacArthur's chapters have too many unspoken assumptions about how Scripture functions that were not defended to be taken too seriously. In addition, I didn't appreciate the dismissive and condescending tone MacArthur took throughout this text with people who disagreed with his views. The only reason I'm giving this book two stars is because of his chapter speaking out against the prosperity gospel and his chapter discussing the mortification of sin were well done and somewhat helpful in certain respects. For the most part though I found his simplistic arguments and abrasive tone off-putting and don't recommend this book.
